Woman asks if she should confront her husband about his ‘business trips’ with another lady or just accept it

Singapore — A desperate woman who may lose her husband is asking netizens if she should confront him for his cheating ways.

In a post to an anonymous forum page on Facebook called ‘NUSWhispers’, the middle-aged woman wrote that she worked a menial job while her husband went on “business trips”.

She added that they had two children.

“Recently I found out that he had been talking to this lady who addresses him as hubs when I accidentally saw his incoming message when he was away from his phone”, she wrote.

She asked people online if she should address this issue and risk being left alone with two children to care for, or if she should accept that he “is just finding some source of pleasure out there that I failed to do over time”.

She asked if it was normal for him to have another woman or if it was something that he would grow out of “as he ages”.

Netizens said she should get a divorce, but do so with evidence of his cheating ways so that she could claim alimony and child support for their children.

Tan Jee Say criticises current 4G, says government must change

Singapore — Opposition politician Tan Jee Say took to Facebook on Monday (Apr 19) to urge Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to get a completely “new team and put the succession plan aside”. Mr Lee should stay on as PM as long as necessary to help Singapore navigate “a brave new world”.

With Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat’s “exit” as leader of the ruling People’s Action Party’s (PAP) fourth-generation (4G) team, it’s “time to replace all the 4G ministers”, who have “fumbled big-time” in the Covid-19 crisis, he says. He called for a change in line-up in a Facebook post as early as September 25, 2020, he reminds his followers.

“Heng is not the only horse who has gone astray. The entire 4G herd is directionless and unsure of themselves. When there is a leadership vacuum with no obvious successor and none of them steps forward, then none among them deserves to lead. PM must look beyond them for a deserving successor,” he writes.

Heng’s exit: Time for PM to get a complete new team and put succession plan aside
Added: I shall not dwell on the reasons of…

Covid-19 is not the only problem. he says.

Singapore’s very prosperity is at stake with China’s Belt and Road (BRI) initiative to reopen the old Silk Route from China to Europe threatening to eclipse the existing sea trade route through the Malacca Straits that enriched Singapore as a maritime hub.

PM Lee has to stay on to meet this challenge which also requires new and younger leaders, says Mr Tan.

Mr Tan, who contested the 2011 presidential election, founded the Singaporeans First party in 2014 and upon its dissolution in 2020 returned to the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), writes: “There are 2 reasons why PM needs to replace all the 4G ministers.

“1. They have been promoted to their level of incompetence (Peter principle). This shows up clearly in their mishandling of C-19 in the initial crucial period and their subsequent sub-par performance compared to PRC, Taiwan and New Zealand, to name just the obvious few. Covid-19 is their first crisis and they fumbled big-time. How can we expect them to take us through another crisis?
“2. Singapore’s economic fundamentals are shifting fast and furious. The BRI (China’s Belt and Road initiative) will reopen the ancient silk route from China to Europe across the EuroAsia landmass with a vast network of road, rail and oil and gas pipelines that also branch through Iran, Pakistan and Myanmar to sea ports, thus eclipsing the sea trade routes through the Malacca Straits that have turned Singapore into a strategic maritime, trading and petroleum hub.”
“The very basis of Singapore’s prosperity over the past two centuries will be undermined,” says Mr Tan.  To “overcome this existential threat”, Singapore needs new leaders — young professionals in their 30s and 40s “who have worked in the new economy of high tech and e-commerce companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, Baidu, Alibaba, Lazada, Tencent, WeChat, Meituan or Grab”.

Mr Tan suggests older and established professionals work alongside them and temper their exuberance in case they “run loose and wild with their imagination”. “The older guys are unlikely to feel threatened by these young upstarts nor would they be interested in any political succession,” he adds.

“In fact, PM should put aside any succession plan so as not to distract and divert the government’s attention away from tackling the demands of the new economy. He should stay on as PM for as long as necessary for him to successfully navigate us through to the brave new world.”

As the economy changes, Mr Tan urges the Government to increase spending rather than rely on austerity measures. He proposes “spending enormous resources including the use of our substantial reserves that the PM and his generation have accumulated over the years. Only the PM, not his pretender, has the credibility and the authority to spend our reserves.”

The succession plan, he says, was “a huge unnecessary waste”.

As to who should be the next PM, Mr Tan says it is irrelevant to the current situation. “Our key priority is to strengthen the economy, society and the people. The obvious successor will emerge on his or her own. We may not know in advance who he or she is but it’s alright. As long as we have a strong economy, society and people, we will get a deserving PM. Don’t waste time planning for a specific him or her. Just get on with the job at hand and let wisdom lead us there.” he concludes.

Mr Tan contested the 2020 elections as one of the four SDP candidates for the Holland–Bukit Timah GRC, which was won by a PAP team headed by Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan. Previously, Mr Tan was the principal private secretary to then-DPM Goh Chok Tong between 1985 to 1990.

McDonald’s Singapore features Malaysian workers separated from loved ones due to border closure in touching Ramadan ad

PETALING JAYA — A McDonald’s Singapore advertisement highlighting its Malaysian workers unable to reunite with loved ones during Ramadan is tugging hearts online.

The ad, released in conjunction with the holy fasting month for Muslims, focuses on the chain’s Singapore-based Malaysian workers separated from their family due to Covid-19 that necessitated border closures.

“During Ramadan, it is customary for Muslim families to sit around the same table and break fast together,” McDonald’s Singapore wrote on its official YouTube channel.

“Due to Covid, the large number of Malaysian Muslims who work in Singapore cannot celebrate Ramadan with their loved ones back at home.”

The clip titled My Happy Table celebrates the Ramadan spirit despite separation through the eyes of three staff members.

One of them, Samsuri, initially thought the border shutdown would last for two weeks but he has been in Singapore for more than a year due to travel restrictions.

The father of one said he considered going back to Malaysia during family emergencies such as when his house was flooded and when his father suffered a stroke.

“But I thought about my commitments, this is my sacrifice for my family back home in Malaysia,” he said, adding that his close friends in the Lion City were facing the same situation.

Rozaini, who has been working in Singapore for 11 years said three months felt like three years and if she ever gets to return to Malaysia, she would like to hug her parents and in-laws.

“Responsibility is more important than those things, so I just have to push through,” she said.

Another McDonald’s Singapore employee Anas said he would tell loved one what it was like living in Singapore and missing his wife and son.

“I used to travel back and forth to meet them every day,” he said.

The touching clip ends with a tearful virtual reunion of the three families that was filmed in McDonald’s Malaysia where they are seen breaking fast together.

Unpopular opinion: Libel damages should be increased for those who crowdfund, says Calvin Cheng

Singapore — Courts should take into consideration that libel damages can be crowdfunded and the amounts should be increased accordingly, says Mr Calvin Cheng.

In a Facebook post on Saturday (Apr 17), the former Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) contended that courts should increase the libel damages as supporters of the libellous causes can share in the punishment.

Mr Cheng added that, for years, he has been saying that “not only do the people who write libellous posts be punished, so too should the people who like and share those posts”.

His post comes after blogger and financial adviser Leong Sze Hian successfully crowdfunded the full amount of S$133,000 he was ordered to pay Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for defamation.

Mr Leong was sued for sharing, on his Facebook page, an article from the Malaysian news site The Coverage that falsely linked PM Lee to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) corruption scandal in Malaysia.

Similarly, blogger Roy Ngerng, also crowdfunding, raised S$144,000 in just nine days. The blogger was ordered by the High Court to pay S$150,000 to PM Lee after a defamation suit in 2015. Mr Lee sued him for an article he wrote on his blog, The Heart Truths.

“The people who donated to them are very likely the same kind of people who would like and share their libellous posts.

“By donating to the damages, they are sharing in the punishment,” Mr Cheng added, explaining that, because they shared a portion of the punishment by donating, “the quantum of damages is now too small”.

His opinion was not a popular one as many in the comments section disagreed with him.

Migrant worker helps visually impaired senior cross the street at AMK

Singapore—In today’s jaded world, it’s easy to find news that angers or upsets us, and therefore good news of people’s kind acts never fails to bring joy.

One such recent act of kindness was shown by a migrant worker who took the time to help a visually impaired senior citizen cross the street at Ang Mo Kio.

The random good-hearted act was seen and recorded on a dashcam video by a netizen named Timothy Ho and then uploaded on the ROADS.sg Facebook page on Sunday (April 18).

Mr Ho wrote, “Would like to share a wonderful act of kindness by the immigrant worker. Patiently bringing a visually impaired old man across the road.  Happened along AMK Ave 6 today 10.38 am.”

In the video, the migrant worker can be seen on the right side of the screen, holding the older man’s arm. They wait patiently until those who are coming from the other side of the street, some on foot, others on their personal mobility devices, have finished crossing.

The worker then guides the senior across the street, still holding his arm. He slows down his pace to match that of the older man.

The video has been shared over a hundred times.

Commenters on the ROADS.sg page praised the worker for his kindness, with one netizen expressing gladness that the older man was protected from “YOLO (you only live once) cyclists”.

One commenter opined that foreign workers seem to respect elders more than Singaporeans do.

However, some commenters took issue with the cyclists in the video, who crossed the street using their bikes. The netizens argued that they should have dismounted first and then crossed on foot.

But while this is recommended, it is not a hard and fast rule, as long as cyclists and scooter riders take care when crossing the road.
