Priyanka Chopra says people in Hollywood pronounced her name as ‘Shapra’: ‘If you can say Oprah, you can say Chopra’

India — Actor Priyanka Chopra joined veteran actor Kabir Bedi on Monday over a video call to launch his upcoming memoir, Stories I Must Tell. During the conversation, they spoke about how tough it was for them to make headways into Hollywood.

Speaking about finding roles in Hollywood as an Indian actor, Kabir said he had to look for anything that seemed foreign to the American audience. “In those days Hollywood just wasn’t writing roles for Indian, or Asians in general. So how do you get a role if it is not written for you? When they did have a role for an Asian, they had no hesitation in painting a white actor brown. The way I got the roles was telling my agent that forget the Indian bit. Cast me in anything that is foreign-looking to Hollywood,” he said in the video by Bollywood Hungama, adding how he has played an Indian, a Moroccan and other foreign characters. “In those days, a Ben Kingsley had to change his name from Krishna Bhanji to Ben Kingsley to be taken seriously and get roles. Today, Priyanka Chopra does not have to change her name for her success in America,” he added.

Priyanka interjected, “But let me tell you. This is a couple of decades later when I decided to go and seek work in America. I didn’t have to change my name but I did have to teach people how to say my name. Everybody would be like Priyanka ‘Shapra-Shapra’. I said it is not Shapra. If you can say Oprah, you can say Chopra. It’s not that difficult.”

She added, “What I had to do as well–so funny that you are saying you had to do at that time– was I had to be ethnically ambiguous to a certain extent, to be able to get mainstream roles. In Quantico, I played a half-Indian, half-American. All my bigger work when I initially joined Hollywood, I could not step out there with being Indian, because it was too alien for Hollywood. I don’t think, for a very long time, they understood casting an Indian person in a mainstream role in a leading part. So even now, it was extremely hard.”

Kabir was seen in Hollywood movies such as Octopussy and Ashanti. Priyanka made her Hollywood debut with her action series Quantico and was later seen in films such as Baywatch, A Kid Like Jake and most recently, The White Tiger and We Can Be Heroes. She has multiple projects in her kitty–a film with Mindy Kaling about Indian women, the fourth part of the Matrix franchise, Citadel with Russo Brothers and romcom Text For You.

Indranee Rajah: It’s awesome when you realise something you build is going to last 100 years

Singapore— It seems as if Minister Indranee Rajah could not contain her excitement in a Facebook post about the progress the PUB’s Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) has made.

On Tuesday morning (Apr 20), the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office wrote about her visit the previous day to the worksite of the DTSS Phase 2 together with Ms Grace Fu, the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment.

Ms Indranee wrote, “It’s rather awesome when you realise that something you are building is going to last 100 years or more.”

In her post, she referred to the DTSS as “Singapore’s superhighway for collecting used water.”

The minister described it as “a system of huge tunnels going deep underground, and moving water purely by gravity to the water treatment plants for cleaning and recycling”.

It’s easy to understand her excitement, as water has always been one of Singapore’s most precious resources.

She added that one part of the DTSS, the Tuas Water Reclamation Plant, can treat as much as 800,000 cubic metres of water each day, and that’s just for starters.

“That’s the same amount of water in 320 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

“The DTSS will boost our water sustainability, harnessing and recycling every precious drop of water.”

Looking ahead, she said that the DTSS will benefit not only Singaporeans today, but future generations as well.

Ms Indranee added that next month in Parliament, the Significant Infrastructure Government Loan Bill (SINGA) will be debated.

If this Bill is passed, the Government will be able to borrow funds that would pay for infrastructure key to the country’s long-term development. “Repayment will be shared by present and future generations as both will benefit from such infrastructure,” wrote the minister.

According to a CNA report, Phase 2 of the DTSS is nearly 25 per cent complete. As of this month, work on around 24 km of the 100 km-long water conveyance system will have been finished.

Construction on Phase 2 of the DTSS started in 2017 and is scheduled to be finished by 2025.

The DTSS will eventually be able to meet 55 per cent of the country’s water needs, said Yong Wei Hin, the director of Phase 2, in 2019.

“Once DTSS Phase 2 is in place, the existing conventional water reclamation plants at Ulu Pandan and Jurong, as well as intermediate pumping stations, will be progressively phased out to free up land for higher value development,” CNA quotes PUB, the national water agency,” as saying.

Local residents chip in with cooked meals

India — At a time when social media are flooded with desperate pleas for help to find vacant hospital beds, ventilators, oxygen, and other facilities, concerned citizens are stepping in to provide resources ranging from oxygen cylinders to cooked meals to families battling the infection.

Anupriya Singh (Anna), a 42-year-old designer who doubles up as an aggregator of home chef services, recently formed another network of home chefs operating through WhatsApp groups to cater to Covid-affected families.

“Right now, everyone knows someone or the other who is down with Covid. Seeing the situation, I started reaching out to home chefs so that we could cater to more people and save on crucial delivery time and expenses. As of today, we have over 120 chefs who are serving Covid-affected families. Every day, I create a new list of home chefs who can provide services in different parts of Delhi,” said Singh.

She said nearly 40 chefs are joining the network on a daily basis, with requests for food pouring in from different quarters.

“We are not allowing the chefs to price their thalis above Rs.150. Some chefs are ready to deliver food for free, but recipients insist on paying for it. Money from such services will be used to start a fund through which we plan to support the needy,” said Singh.

Within the neighbourhood, chefs are relying on services of friends or security guards to deliver food to families whereas services of app-based aggregators are being availed of to deliver food to far-off addresses. “Some chefs are also sending their family members to deliver food. People are stepping out to make deliveries themselves despite the severity of the prevailing situation,” said Singh.

Ankit Gupta, 28, an Urdu poet who has been living in Delhi for the past year, has been using Twitter to connect those seeking Covid-related help. Gupta said concerned individuals have been using Twitter as a platform to respond to calls for help. “Through social media, we have formed a network of volunteers who are reaching out to hospitals and government officials so that patients can be admitted or provided services at the earliest,” said Gupta.

Besides queries related to hospitalisation, Gupta has also been receiving requests from those who are hassled by the curfew restrictions. On Monday, Gupta delivered packets of cooked meals to around 1,000 people near Kashmere Gate. “Due to the lockdown restrictions, people have lost jobs and are unable to pay for food or rent. Through social media, we raised money and were able to help such people,” said Gupta.

Aryaman Bhatnagar, a resident, is among those who are using social media to verify crucial information and compile resources. Bhatnagar said the network was started on WhatsApp by citizens.

“We provide verified leads and credible information — pertaining to bed availability, oxygen, and medicines — to those in need. There is a lot of information doing the rounds of WhatsApp and other platforms but, most often, the information is either false or the numbers are not working. Our aim to make sure that a person in need can get verified information on one common list or link,” said Bhatnagar.

Praise for S’pore driver who lets another overtake, receives courteous Japanese hazard lights thank-you gesture

Singapore – Amid the news of reckless motorists endangering others on the road, one video circulating on social media garnered praise as it depicted two drivers who were considerate and courteous.

One Johan Fayd took to Facebook page Complaint Singapore on Sunday (Apr 18) to share footage caught on his dashboard camera.

Mr Johan began by indicating that he was not highlighting a complaint post but an experience with a “humble and grateful driver”.

He said that the vehicle in front of him never changed lanes abruptly and even did the famous Japanese “thank you hazard”.

Where cyclists and pedestrians in Japan bow their heads quickly when given way by motorists, the “thank you hazard” is a way for two vehicles to communicate with one another. It is a common practice where an overtaking car turns on its hazard lights for a few seconds as a sign of appreciation to the vehicle behind for letting them change lanes.

Here’s a mini-compilation of the “thank you hazard” in action.

The video uploaded by Mr Johan showed a blue Volkswagen Scirocco travelling along Woodlands Avenue 9, signalling right with the intent to change lanes.

Once the Scirocco managed to filter into the lane, it flashed its hazard lights twice to indicate a “thank-you”.

“Let’s all put our ego aside and give way to one another and be grateful to thank the driver behind for giving way,” said Mr Johan.

“This humble, grateful driver left a smile on my face because it is not something that I get every day, even it’s rare to get this.”

The appreciative individual noted that a small gesture went a long way and urged Singaporeans to adopt this habit as well.

Members of the online community commended both drivers, adding that others would speed up after seeing someone wanting to filter into their lane.

“If only more could follow too,” said Facebook user Danny Ang Pk./TISG

KF Seetoh on errant cyclists: “You need rules la, that’s common sense”

Singapore — Recent reports of reckless cyclists on the road have prompted  street food guru KF Seetoh to come up with his own recipe for road safety.

“Implement road safety for cyclist too, just like how (bike) riders (and) drivers are strictly bound by it,” the Makansutra founder wrote in a Facebook post on Monday (Apr 19). “Even walkers and bladers have laws.”

“When one or a small group of unregistered and untrained road users is allowed to disregard the rules and code of conduct on our roads, no one is safe”, he wrote.

“You need rules la, that’s common sense.”

Lately, there have been many instances of reckless cyclists on the road.

In two days alone (Apr 17 and Apr 18), Land Transport Authority (LTA) enforcement officers and Traffic Police officers found 34 cyclists had flouted road traffic rules.

Mr Seetoh joined others online voicing concern about reckless cyclists.

“Of course we have to address bad behaviour by all road users which is why there’s a law that will punish all registered and trained road users,” he wrote.

Articulating the anxieties felt by motorists, he added: “Tell me if a driver has never wondered what some wahoo riders will do when they approach a stationary bus at a bus stop from behind (bike has no mirrors and dun even bother to see if there’s cars on their right before they swerve into the second lane and endanger the second and third lane users.). Or what a cyclist will do when they suddenly see a little pothole on the road and naturally swerve, and test the reflexes of the poor driver behind”.

“It’s pointless to sing the green transport song and fear discouraging riders when you cannot keep all road users safe in this stressed-out land-scarce roads of Singapore,”  Mr Seetoh wrote.

“If your roads are not bike-friendly as yet, go easy on encouraging green lawless riding on the roads, please.

“You have to make that firm decision on your own, no point putting up some select committee of opposing views and get nowhere with it. Dun ask which group is more impt. Safety is not bargainable,” he concluded.

Earlier this month, footage of cyclists in Singapore taking multiple lanes sparked online debate regarding road safety.

At present, cyclists and PAB riders are allowed to ride on roads, but not on expressways and road tunnels. Under the Road Traffic Act, it is mandatory for cyclists and PAB riders to wear a helmet when riding on roads. There is also a code of conduct they should follow when cycling on roads under the Highway Code. /TISG

Jail for syndicate member behind S$2.5m investment scam, he gambled away the money in S’pore casinos

Singapore – A member of a syndicate involved in a S$2.5 million cross-border investment scam was sentenced to 12 years and one month in jail on Monday (Apr 19).

Chinese national Wei Yong, 44, pleaded guilty to five charges, including cheating and holding a fake Myanmar passport. Another six charges were considered during his sentencing, reported Channel News Asia.

He was a syndicate member who operated through shell companies and rented boardrooms as an office front at Marina Bay Financial Centre to attract rich investors. Investigators found he gambled heavily in Singapore casinos.

Wei was an odd-job worker in Hubei and Beijing before joining a syndicate sometime in 2015 and 2016, the court heard. The group hatched a plan in 2016 in Beijing to establish shell companies to cheat people of their money.

Reports noted that the shell companies included  American Ageas PE Fund Inc, Pfizer Private Fund Inc and Nanyang Capital Management.

The syndicate targeted high-net-worth individuals, telling them that they could make a lot of money through the shell companies operating in financial hubs such as the United States and Singapore.

The court heard that the victims from China and South Korea were asked to transfer funds for administrative fees and other associated costs for fundraising.

They were also invited to talks and workshops on finance, investments and business in Singapore, China and the US.

The investors were also flown to the syndicate’s business office in Marina Bay Financial Centre to reassure them of the shell companies’ “credibility”.

The syndicate members would dress professionally and be present at the boardrooms to get the victims to sign contracts. In reality, the venues were rented on an ad hoc basis.

It was reported that four victims transferred funds ranging from 930,000 yuan (S$180,000) to 2.6 million yuan (S$500,000) between March 2017 and July 2019.

Once the money was received, the syndicate members would become uncontactable.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed receiving multiple reports regarding a cross-border investment scam by a transnational criminal based in China since November 2017.

The SPF received 10 police reports from 10 victims based in China. They revealed having lost S$2.5 million in total.

Wei was arrested at Changi Airport in November 2019. The police also discovered a fake Myanmar passport with his photograph.

He admitted buying the passport for 40,000 yuan (S$8,160) in 2019 from a Chinese agent. He purchased the fake passport to enjoy the “benefits” of owning a Myanmar passport, such as buying and owning houses and land in Myanmar at lower prices.

Wei was caught trying to leave Singapore using his Chinese passport in an attempt to fly to Myanmar. He intended to return to Singapore using the fake passport.

As for his ill-gotten money, he had gambled most of it away at the Marina Bay Sands Casino and Resorts World Sentosa Casino.

Casino records revealed he had transacted S$30 million in Singapore casinos between May 2015 and November 2019.

To date, there has been no restitution made by Wei and his accomplices, reported CNA. Other syndicate members are still at large.

There was “considerable planning and premeditation in the brazen financial scam here”, said District Judge Marvin Bay.

“I note the meticulously planned attempts to inject a veneer of legitimacy that the fictitious companies had a business presence in Singapore included renting lavishly furnished boardrooms in Marina Bay Financial Centre 1 for meetings with and presentations to victims,” he said.

The judge added, “There is a need to deal decisively with syndicate-run scams of this nature”.

For each count of cheating, Wei could have been imprisoned up to 10 years and fined.

For his possession of a fake passport, he could have been imprisoned for up to 10 years and fined up to S$10,000./TISG

Travellers without a negative report will be placed in quarantine for a period of 14 days, it had said.

The decision was take following exponential rise in Covid-19 cases in the city.

While three of these four airlines did not respond to calls for a response, an AirAsia spokesperson said, “AirAsia India confirms that we are in compliance with guidelines and protocols issued by the respective regulatory bodies. We would also like to clarify that we have not received any information from any authority on this matter.”

The police were yet to register any FIR on this complaint.

Lee Ha Neul blames bandmate Kim Chang Ryul for his brother’s death

0

Seoul — Hip-hop trio 45RPM member Lee Hyun Bae had a heart attack and died on April 17 at the age of 48. His elder brother, Lee Ha Neul, is blaming his bandmate Kim Chang Ryul for Hyun Bae’s death. Ha Neul and Chang Ryul are members of the hip-hop trio DJ DOC.

When Hyun Bae died, Ha Neul and fellow DJ DOC member Jung Jae Yong flew to Jeju Island where Hyun Bae stayed. At that time, Chang Ryul posted a photo of Hyun Bae on his Instagram account, paying a tribute to the deceased rapper. Ha Neul responded angrily saying: “You’re the centre of this. He died because of you…”

Not long after, Ha Neul’s comment was deleted. According to sources,  Ha Neul was upset over his brother’s death. It was said that he was just venting his frustration to a close friend, reported Hype.my. However, that may not be true as Ha Neul streamed live on Instagram to blame Chang Ryul again for Hyun Bae’s death.

Ha Neul said that Chang Ryul looked after all money matters related to their band, DJ DOC.

It was alleged that he never shared the money with Hyun Bae even though the latter wrote the lyrics to all of their songs. Ha Neul felt angry that Chang Ryul was pretending to be his brother’s friend after Hyun Bae passed away due to being worked to death. Ha Neul said that he would reveal everything that he had hidden for 20 years to keep DJ DOC going. He alleged that Chang Ryul “never put in any effort on the DJ DOC albums. He’d just come after the release, get drunk, and cheat on his wife.”

Furthermore, Ha Neul revealed that all of them, together with Hyun Bae, started a business on Jeju Island. Chang Ryul reportedly bailed out halfway, breaking agreements, due to lack of faith in the business doing well. Because of that, Hyun Bae started doing delivery services to earn some money.

Sadly, Hyun Bae had a car accident out on delivery business but was unable to obtain a detailed diagnosis because he did not have enough money. But he asked his family not to tell Ha Neul because he didn’t want his elder brother to worry about him./TISG
