Jollibee in Hot Waters as Customer Finds Metal Piece in Chicken Joy Gravy – Singapore Branch Initiates Investigation

Singapore—Jollibee, the famed Philippines-based fast-food chain, is currently under the spotlight as a customer revealed finding a foreign object in her Chicken Joy meal.

A netizen named Ms Ang Su posted on the Complaint Singapore Facebook page that she had ordered a three-piece Chicken Joy meal from Jollibee last Monday (Apr 19).

The order, which came from the restaurant chain’s Jurong Point branch, was brought to Ms Ang’s home via Grab delivery.

She wrote that it was “Very horrifying to find out this large piece of metal inside the gravy. Found it while eating my first piece of chicken and got to the bottom of the gravy cup.”

The netizen added that she was posting to warn everyone to be very careful as the piece of metal could be a choking hazard, especially for children.

Ms Ang wrote she “like(s) their chicken” but that it was “very disappointing” to have found the foreign object in her meal.

She added that she had sent a message to the fast-food chain about the incident but had not yet received a reply by the time she posted on the Complaint Singapore Facebook page.

Mustsharenews reported on Wednesday night (Apr 21) that Jollibee Singapore has said it has reached out to the customer to investigate the incident.

Ms Ang in her post wrote, “I just don’t want other people to get hurt. And I’m here to share my experience and hope that at least people will check what’s inside the gravy first before starting to eat. Mine got big piece so I saw it and took it out. but doesn’t mean u will have a metal piece big enough to be seen in your food.”

She also wrote that she was not asking for a refund but would be “satisfied” if Jollibee let her know it would do what is needed to ensure its kitchens and food are safe.

The netizen added that she had reported the incident to the Singapore Food Agency and hoped that it would take action.

A number of commenters on her post wrote that they believed the foreign object comes from the steel wool scrubbers used in washing dishes. She replied that she thought so, too.

However, one netizen replied that such steel wool scrubbers are no longer allowed by the NEA.

Billionaire businessman James Dyson moves back to UK amid tax row

Singapore—He came, stayed for two years, and seems to have gone back to the United Kingdom.

Sir James Dyson, pioneer businessman in vacuum technology and prominent Brexiteer, made Singapore his primary residence in 2019.

He announced at that time that his company would concentrate on the Asian market and said that his choice to move to Singapore was a commercial decision that had nothing to do with Brexit.

But, as he had made his pro-Brexit views plain to all, his move to tax haven Singapore drew sharp criticism.

However, filings made by companies he controls, which include his family office, show that he is now based predominantly in the UK, according to a Bloomberg report.

Sir James, 73, has not yet commented on reports on his move, although a spokesperson for Dyson has is quoted by Bloomberg as saying, “We do not comment on private family matters and nothing has changed in respect of the company. The structure of the group and the business rationale underpinning it are unaltered.”

Critics have called out Sir James afresh after he texted UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in March last year for assurance that the tax status of the staff of his company would remain the same if they moved to the UK to make ventilators for people who had Covid.

The BBC reported on Wednesday (Apr 21) that Mr Johnson promised to take care of the matter.

Mr Johnson messaged the billionaire saying, “I will fix it tomo! We need you. It looks fantastic”.

He later defended his conduct in a row over lobbying by Sir James.

He said he had no regrets trying to get more ventilators needed for the pandemic, saying that any prime minister would have done the same.

He told the House of Commons on Wednesday (Apr 21), “I make absolutely no apology at all for shifting heaven and earth and doing everything I possibly could…to secure ventilators for people in this country.”

But he was criticised by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who claimed there was “one rule for those who have the prime minister’s phone number and another for everybody else”.

Sir James, whose company made bagless vacuum cleaners popular, has had a strong presence in Singapore in the past two years, and has hired employees in Singapore to work at Weybourne, his family office.

In 2019, he bought a penthouse worth S$74 million, only to sell it at a loss, at S$62 million, the following year.

It was announced last week that Dyson is looking to hire 250 more engineers and scientists in Singapore over the next five years in line with its growth in the robotics, machine learning and artificial intelligence departments.

On Apr 14 Dyson said that it will move into its new global headquarters at the St James Power Station “shortly,” reported Channel News Asia.

“Here in Singapore, we are expanding in specific areas such as robots, machine learning, artificial intelligence and connectivity. And we are looking to hire experts in that field, which goes across all products,” said Dyson’s chief executive officer Roland Krueger.

In addition to offering more jobs, the firm will also establish a new global cybersecurity centre in Singapore.

Ho Ching: 11 new dorm infections key reason for prioritising vaccinating migrant workers

Singapore—After the news broke of migrant workers in a dormitory testing positive for Covid-19, Madam Ho Ching, Temasek Holdings chief executive and wife of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, took to social media to explain why vaccinating workers who live in dorms is a priority.

Foreign worker dormitories were the location where the vast majority of Singapore’s Covid-19 cases were found, in large part due to their overcrowded and at times, unhygienic, conditions.

Covid-19 infections spread rapidly in these dormitories even after migrant workers’ rights activists warned that they could be a hotbed for the disease early on in the pandemic.

News reports said Singapore is seeing the highest number of dorm infections in months at the Westlite Woodlands dormitory, where 11 workers were reported infected on Wednesday (Apr 21).

CNA published an excerpt of a letter signed by the manager of the dorm, which said, “These 11 COVID-19 positive residents are Recovered Workers, and are in addition to the one resident who had been vaccinated and subsequently reported positive on 19th April 2021 (Monday) from Rostered Routine Testing.”

Additionally, over 1,100 residents on the block will spend two weeks at a government quarantine facility (GQF) as a precautionary measure.

Mdm Ho posted a link to the CNA report, and explained why there is “a clear track to vaccinate our dorm residents as a priority” in parallel to “to the public and essential services and frontliner tracks.”

“Dorms can be superspreader venues, that can ricochet all round. And no one is safe till everyone is safe,” she wrote.

Mdm Ho added two “important factors” in the matter.

The first point she made is that individuals who have had Covid in the past may get reinfected as their antibodies decline, which is why they need to be vaccinated.

Her second point is that giving those who have recovered from the infection “a shot of an effective mRNA vaccine is like having the 2nd booster shot of a 2 shot regime”.

When recovered persons are given the single-shot vaccine, this gives their antibody levels the needed boost for their protection against the infection.

“They could also spark the deeper and broader layer of cellular defences, which are more long lasting, and which appear to be able to defend against new variants,” she added.

Mdm Ho wrote further on the “new variants of concern, or VOCs,” saying that these have “higher breakthrough possibilities” and can “escape the embrace of the antibodies that fought the older variants”.

She also called for continued vigilance, pointing to experiences in  “India, USA, Europe, Brazil”, where cases continue to rise.

“When we get lulled by falling or low numbers, and begin to interact boisterously and loudly in huge dense crowds without covid precautions, whether at parties, religious festivals, political rallies, or sports events, we seed huge new waves.”

She also mentioned that vaccine coverage can be expected to expand to cover even people as young as 12 years old, infants and pregnant women by the latter half of the year.

PSP’s Kumaran Pillai appeals for help for a man with a chronic illness and only $180 in the bank, supporting a young daughter

Singapore — The Progress Singapore Party’s (PSP) Kumaran Pillai has appealed to netizens for help, asking them to donate supplies and essential items to a resident in Kebun Baru left with only S$180 in savings.

Mr Jackson, a cleaner, whose wife is not able to contribute much, has to look after his three-year-old daughter. Earlier this month, when his daughter had to spend six days in the hospital for diarrhoea and high fever, Mr Jackson had to take leave without pay, leaving him with less than S$200 in his bank account till his next payday.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday (Apr 20), Mr Pillai, a member of the PSP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) and media spokesperson for the party, shared details of the resident’s plight.

Mr Jackson is a diabetic who lost his job as a cook in 2020 when the canteen stall he was working for closed down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He is currently working as a cleaner.  Due to personal issues, Jackson’s wife is not always around to contribute equally. Mr Jackson and his daughter live in a two-room rental flat.

Kebun Baru’s Meet-The-People-Sessions’ (MPS) team said that, from their conversations with him, they learned that he had applied to operate a school canteen stall, but because he was in his early 40s, he was considered too young. Usually, canteen operations are awarded to older applicants.

“When the PSP team first visited him in early 2021, Jackson was still jobless. Not long after, Jackson informed us that he had obtained a job as a cleaner to tide things over while continuing to look for a job as a cook, a job in which he has 20 years of experience. His dream is still to be able to operate a stall in a canteen, where rent is considerably lower”, a spokesperson for PSP’s Kebun Baru MPS team said.

When Mr Jackson contacted the team in April, circumstances in his household had changed drastically. Caring for his three-year-old daughter fell to him, and he had to send and pick her up from preschool daily.

He says that he usually wakes up at 5 am to prepare for the day and only has time to eat dinner after putting his daughter to sleep,  past 9 pm.

Wrote Mr Pillai: “Sometimes, a little compassion goes a long way. Covid 19 and a chronic illness has pushed this man to the edge”.

“He has a little girl to look after and trying to hold down a job at the same time, especially when confronted with diabetes can be debilitating,” he added.

“When his daughter was hospitalised in early April due to high fever and severe diarrhoea, he had to take 6 days of unpaid leave. It put a dent in his paycheque. Last week, Jackson reached out to us as he was getting burned out and only had $180 in his bank account to last him till the next payday in 8 days’ time”, the spokesperson for PSP’s Kebun Baru MPS team said.

“Our team prepared a care package that included diapers, baby care products and some food and brought it to Jackson on Sunday, 18th April. We hope that the care pack will ease his cash flow concerns. We will look for ways to help him”, they added.

Calling for supplies and well-wishers, Mr Pillai wrote that the party was doing what they could to help keep the resident’s spirits up.

“Come join us in helping them. DM me”, Mr Pillai added. /TISG

11 more Covid-19 cases detected at Westlite Woodlands dormitory, S’pore probing possibility of reinfection

Singapore – A 35-year-old migrant worker living in Westlite Woodlands dormitory tested positive for Covid-19 despite completing the vaccination process. A total of 11 workers in the dormitory have tested positive for the virus, with government agencies probing the possibility of reinfection.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) announced in a press release on Thursday (Apr 22) that a migrant worker living in Westlite Woodlands dormitory tested positive for Covid-19 after taking part in a Regular Routine Testing (RRT) on Tuesday (Apr 20).

The Assurance, Care and Engagement Group under MOM and the Ministry of Health (MOH) took swift public health actions after confirming the case and isolated and placed on quarantine the worker’s close contacts at the dormitory and workplace, noted the press release.

One person placed under quarantine is a roommate of the affected worker and also tested positive for the virus at a dedicated quarantine facility, said MOM.

As a precautionary measure, all of the residents at the dormitory were tested for Covid-19.

To date, 10 recovered workers were found to be Covid-19 positive, said MOM.

The agency noted that the cases were immediately isolated and conveyed to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) to investigate for possible reinfection.

According to a Straits Times report, plans are being made to move hundreds of workers from the affected dormitory to a quarantine facility.

A circular released by Westlite Woodlands to its clients indicated that dorm residents are now required to stay in their units at all times until moved to the quarantine facility. They have also been recalled from work.

“We seek your understanding in the above measures, as we work with the authorities to manage the situation. These measures are beneficial to Singapore at large and… mitigate any spread to the community,” the circular added.

More information will be shared by MOM and MOH in due course./TISG

Taipei — Singaporean Mandopop singer JJ Lin delighted his fans recently when he uploaded a rare childhood photo taken with his father when he was young. The singer celebrated his 40th birthday in March 2021 and he dedicated the post to his father on April 20 to celebrate the latter’s birthday. Fans and friends of Lin then sent well wishes to the singer’s father, according to Mothership. The post also contains another photo that appears to have been taken more recently on a beach or during the pair’s cycling excursion.

At the start of the year, Lin went back to Singapore for a short period to spend the Chinese New Year with his family.

One thing to note is that the love of music clearly runs in the genes.

Here’s a video of Lin’s father playing to the song covered by Lin:

Born on March 27, 1981 Wayne Lim Junjie better known by his stage name JJ Lin, is a Singaporean singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor. Lin launched his musical career by releasing his debut album, Music Voyager (2003). Gerald Giam encourages residents to get Covid-19 vaccine

Singapore — Workers’ Party MP Gerald Giam (Aljunied GRC) is encouraging citizens to go for their Covid-19 vaccine.

Got my 2nd dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine today at the polyclinic. It was painless and fuss free. I hope…

Posted by Gerald Giam 严燕松 on thursday, 22 April 2021

Mr Giam, who represents the Bedok Reservoir-Punggol division of the Aljunied Group Representation Constituency (GRC), had his second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine at a polyclinic on Thursday (April 22).

“It was painless and fuss free,” he wrote in a Facebook post. “I hope this will help to protect the many residents that I meet every week from exposure to the virus.”

“I have seen WhatsApp messages playing up a third vaccine (only two, Pfizer and Moderna, are currently approved in Singapore) and subtly prompting seniors to wait for that one. I would encourage everyone to take whichever vaccine is available,” he added.

“The upsides of taking the vaccine far outweigh potential downsides. By getting the vaccine, you protect not only yourself and your family, but also our fellow Singaporeans, including our children under 16 and those who cannot take the vaccine for medical reasons,” he wrote.

Currently, the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines are approved for use by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). The Chinese Sinovac vaccine has arrived in Singapore, but is yet to be approved for use by the HSA.

Jennifer Lopez ‘insisted’ on breaking up with Alex Rodriguez

0

A week after it was announced that Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez had called it quits, People has come up with an explanation. Insiders told the media outlet that the singer did not break up with Rodriguez because he cheated on her. But they did mention that his reputation as a cheater was fatal to their romance. Lopez could not “trust” him any longer, according to ELLE.

A music insider said, “Whether or not he has cheated doesn’t matter. She won’t tolerate the fear of it in the air between them.”

Lopez was the one who initiated the split: “She insisted on it,” a friend of the singer told the outlet. “There are too many issues that are unresolved.”

“She has been pretty miserable and didn’t think it was in her best interests to stay with Alex,” the friend added.

Lopez is doing okay now, the friend told the outlet: “Jennifer has been in these difficult situations before. She is not one to sit around and cry. Her kids make her the happiest. She is doing well.”

People came out with its story after E! reported last Thursday that the singer’s lack of trust in Rodriguez was the ultimate reason their four-year romance ended. Rodriguez knew she was going to end it because she “has not been happy for a while now,” a source told the outlet.

“Once her trust is broken, there’s no turning around,” the source continued. “She feels good about her decision because she knows A-Rod will still be in her life, just in a different capacity.”

A second source close to Lopez told E! that Rodriguez hadn’t fully given up on their romance the way J.Lo had then. “He is respecting her wishes right now, but has high hopes they will get back together,” the source said. “He’s doing everything in his power to make J.Lo happy.”/TISG

Merdeka Generation man asks why vaccines cost him more at a polyclinic than a private GP would have charged

Singapore — A man of the Merdeka Generation says he had to pay more for a flu shot and a pneumonia vaccine at a government polyclinic than he would have had to had he gone to a private general practitioner (GP).

In a Facebook post to popular group Complaint Singapore, he bluntly asked: “Was I conned by Govt Polyclinic or MOH?”

He explained that he was given a booklet by a polyclinic doctor advising the elderly to sign up for the flu shot and the pneumococcal vaccine. According to the booklet, the vaccines cost S$18 and S$31 respectively for the Merdeka Generation if they went to a GP.

Thinking a polyclinic would charge less than a GP, he booked a date at a polyclinic.

“On the day of vaccinations, again I was given the same booklet. However at cashier after paying by Medisave, I was shocked that the Polyclinic charged me $46.88! (25% of $62.50)”, he wrote.

“Asking for the person in charge of the Polyclinic, a lady came and reply that the booklet shown $31 is for private GP. When I questioned her why a Govt Polyclinic is charging more than a private GP? She can’t answer n go back her office to check. On coming back, she replied that the Private GP cost not inclusive of GST yet”, he added.

But when he called a GP, he was told that S$31 was the net price.

He called the polyclinic again for an explanation, asking to be called back with answers to his questions. Twelve days later, a woman from the polyclinic called.

She explained that he was classified as Band 4 (based on household income), “thus the subsidy is 50% of the full price of $125 and then factored in my MG card of 25% subsidy. Told her that MG cards is a CHAS Card itself regardless of Household income or Annual Value of the flat and also why the private GP will charged (sic) me $31 based on my MG card. She can’t explain n said is the Govt policy!”

Frustrated, the man added that for his second shot in a year’s time, he planned to visit a private GP instead of a polyclinic.

After his long post, he added an update from MOH: “At Polyclinic, in addition to the 75% subsidy on eligible vaccinations for all Singaporean, Pioneers and MG Senior receive an additional 50% and 25% subsidy off their mean-tested vaccination bill, respectively. We noted your feedback on the post-subsidy prices for the vaccination for both settings and will take it into account in future policy reviews”.

TISG has reached out to both the resident and MOH for comment and clarification. /TISG
