0

Tennis star Naomi Osaka will be launching her own skincare line soon. According to Business of Fashion, the skincare line is specifically designed for people of colour.

The reigning champion of the US Open and the Australian Open stayed true to her roots when she named her brand Kinló. Kin means “gold” in Japanese and ló means “gold” in Haitian Creole. And the best thing about the skincare line is that every product will cost US$20 (about S$27) or less.

According to Buzzfeed, Osaka’s skincare line will feature only five products when it launches this fall. The collection includes a protective body spray, restorative lip balm and restorative eye cream. It is reported that a must-have item to buy would be Kinló’s tinted SPF 40 moisturiser with blue-light protection, which is ideal for those days you are working long hours on your computer or cannot seem to get away from your phone.

The collection also features another moisturiser with a tinted SPF 50 for those who like to replace their foundation with a light coverage sunscreen.

Born on October 16, 1997, Naomi Osaka is a Japanese professional tennis player. Osaka has been ranked No 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and is the first Asian player to hold the top ranking in singles. She is a four-time Grand Slam singles champion, and is the reigning champion at the US Open and the Australian Open. Her seven titles on the WTA Tour also include two at the Premier Mandatory level.

At the 2018 US Open and the 2019 Australian Open, Osaka won her first two Grand Slam singles titles in back-to-back Grand Slam tournaments. She is the first player to achieve this feat since Jennifer Capriati in 2001. Osaka also became the first woman to win successive Grand Slam singles titles since Serena Williams in 2015./TISG

Tan Tock Seng Hospital locks down second ward; 6 patients, 2 more staff test positive for Covid-19

Singapore – Six patients and two more staff members at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of cases to nine.

On Thursday (Apr 29), the Ministry of Health (MOH) announced in its daily Covid-19 update that TTSH has locked down both Ward 7D and Ward 9D due to a Covid-19 cluster that has formed on the premises.

A 46-year-old female nurse from the Philippines working at TTSH was confirmed to be Covid-19 positive on Wednesday (Apr 28).

She developed a cough, sore throat, and body aches on Apr 27 and sought medical treatment at the hospital.

It was reported that she received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on Jan 26 and the second on Feb 18.

“The Covid-19 vaccine is effective in preventing symptomatic disease for the vast majority of those vaccinated, but it is possible for vaccinated individuals to get infected,” noted MOH.

Following the detection of the Covid-19 case, TTSH locked down Ward 9D and tested the patients and staff working in the ward.

A doctor and three patients tested preliminarily positive for Covid-19. As a precautionary measure, all visitors, patients and staff working in Ward 9D will be placed on quarantine.

In its latest update, MOH highlighted that a 57-year-old male Singaporean, a patient at TTSH initially warded in 7D before being transferred to Ward 9D, tested positive for the virus.

As a result, TTSH has locked down both wards. Staff and patients in both wards are being tested.

MOH added that all close contacts of the cases, including patients, visitors and staff who have been in the affected wards, will be placed on quarantine.

TTSH has stepped up clinical surveillance of all inpatients who may develop fever and acute respiratory infections symptoms.

All patients and staff in other TTSH wards will also be tested for Covid-19 infection, including those who are asymptomatic, said MOH.

From Apr 29, no visitors will be allowed into the hospital except for critically ill patients.

“Our strategy is to aggressively test and draw a wide ring around the cases, to try and prevent further spread,” said MOH./TISG

NUSWhispers gets serious: Average JC student blossomed and now owns 14 F&B establishments

Singapore — Known for posts on relationship problems and the like, popular Facebook page NUSWhispers saw a different kind of post go viral because of the message it sent.

The message in brief: You don’t have to do well in exams to do well in life.

A 35-year-old man wrote on Wednesday (Apr 29) that he was from a top secondary school and junior college.

He went on to tell the tale of a classmate who did better than the rest of them despite having average academic grades.

He wrote that he “grew up around teenagers who prided themselves on their academic performance, on their CCA performance, and believed strongly that they will become highly successful people in the future”.

On the other hand, there was  this girl he met who “didn’t have the best grades, and was notorious for skipping CCA”.

She always used to copy his homework and was eventually retained after her first year in junior college.

Later, one day while having coffee at a café, he saw her working there.

“We started chatting about the old days, and I found out she got BCCC/B at A-levels, and did business at SMU.

“It also turns out that she owns the cafe, along with 13 other F&B establishments in Singapore and JB”, he wrote.

“Her share of the profits in 2018? 2.7 million”.

As for his friends who went to Oxbridge and were recipients of scholarships, they now work as civil servants earning S$10,000 to S$15,000 a month.

“We have created a system of flawed meritocracy where children are brought up believing that just because you are the best in school, you’re always going to be best in life”, the man wrote.

“I think we, as a nation, need more humility when we think that the best people in school deserve more praise than any other student. People are good at different things, and school, being able to follow instructions to the hilt, is just one thing”, he added.

The post must have struck a chord with netizens because in less than a day it garnered more than 1,400 likes, over 1,000 shares and 263 comments.

Seoul — The South Korean-Japanese girl group IZ*ONE officially disbanded on April 29. After being active for two years, the band’s contract finally came to a close.

IZ*ONE fans WiZ*ONEz launched a petition called #IZONEPermanent which started to trend when the announcement was made on March 10, 2021. Various hashtags related to a permanent IZ*ONE have been trending for over a year now, according to Allkpop.

Lately, the WIZ*ONEz came together with a goal to raise US$2 million (S$2.6 million) for a Parallel Universe Project funding for the relaunch of IZ*ONE after they disband.

Unfortunately, despite the WIZ*ONEs’ efforts, Swing Entertainment and Off the Record Entertainment, the IZ*ONE’s labels, have already confirmed the group’s disbandment.

In a statement, they said:

“IZ*ONE’s project group promotions will come to an end as planned at the end of April. Each of the 12 members and their agencies carried out open discussions regarding the group’s future, and this was the conclusion reached. We would like to thank all of the members for their efforts, and we also cheer on each member in their growth.”

AWARE on Veh’s viral hunky male cleaners ad: Men &women don’t face same objectification

Singapore—Gender equality group AWARE has weighed in on a recent advertisement that featured muscular men with their chest and abdominal muscles in full display.

The group said that while no kind of objectification is good, the level of sexual objectification that men and women have faced has never been the same.

“Not even close,” wrote AWARE.

AWARE also pointed out that the attention the Vehs.com ad has been getting is unusual.

“Could the discomfort be due in part to the fact that this ad shows MEN CLEANING – thus challenging the very sticky gender stereotype about whose job it is to perform domestic work? Is the outcry about objectification disguising men’s latent fears of being emasculated by taking on traditionally female roles?)”

On Apr 6, Vehs.com, a homeowners renovation platform, launched an ad campaign for “SINGAPORE 1ST HUNKY GUY CLEANING SERVICE,” featuring several shirtless muscular men doing house cleaning, as well as one very pleased-looking woman.

The cleaning service was only made available for one weekend.

“This is NOT an April Fool’s joke!,” the company wrote in a Facebook post, which ended up going viral, getting shared over 17,000 times.

AWARE wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Apr 28) that people had tagged the group, wanting to hear what they thought of the unusual ad.

The group explained that all objectification is bad, as it “robs individuals of their humanity, agency, and autonomy”.

The portrayal of “ideal” men’s bodies, as exemplified by Vehs.com’s ad’s muscular cleaners, is harmful to men.

“Stereotypes about male strength and physical domination harm men as well as women,” wrote AWARE.

But the group took issue with the perspective that if it had been scantily-clad women featured in the ad, there would have been more outrage.

AWARE wrote that pointing out a double standard, in this case, is  “NOT productive” because “there ARE different standards of acceptability,” since men have never been objectified in the same way as women.

FB screengrab: AWARE

As an example, the group posted photos of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, pointing out that how attractive a man is is not a professional liability, whereas being good-looking makes women “hard to take seriously”.

FB screengrab: AWARE

Moreover, men have been sexually harassed at far lower rates and there aren’t chat groups on Telegram where women exchange pictures of men’s body parts without their consent.

“When we objectify women, we are participating in long-standing tradition of oppressive violence that have very tangible consequences on women’s lives.

“The same cannot be said for men.”

Tan Cheng Bock turns 81 this weekend

Singapore — Progress Singapore Party (PSP) founder and chairman Tan Cheng Bock turns 81 this weekend.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday (Apr 28), Dr Tan thanked his friends and family for celebrating his birthday with him this week.

“The Covid restrictions meant that we had to have many small gatherings, but it was also a wonderful way to spend meaningful moments with many”, he wrote.

He apologised for not being able to meet up with everyone over the course of the weekend and added that he was nonetheless very touched for all of the calls, messages and notes he received.

“At 81, I am thankful to still have my health and be able to actively contribute and engage with Singaporeans,” Dr Tan wrote. He noted that, while still able to, people should continue to give back to society and make a difference.

“So let’s keep active and keep going, whatever your age!” he wrote.

Dr Tan has always considered age to be just a number.

In 2018, he congratulated Dr Mahathir when he became Malaysian prime minister again at the age of 93.

“You have shown that age has not prevented you from doing what u believe is right,” he wrote to Dr Mahathir in a Facebook post.

In his post, he said:
“Oldest PM at 93.

“Congratulation Dr Mahathir for winning the hearts and minds of the Malaysian people in the GE14”. /TISG

New series The Heartland Hero: James Seah to take over Shane Pow’s role

Singapore – In light of Shane Pow’s DUI charge, another local actor James Seah will be taking over his role in the upcoming drama series, The Heartland Hero.

It’s no surprise as Mediacorp formally announced that they’ll no longer be working with Pow after learning about his “driving under the influence” (DUI) charge earlier this week.

8days.sg managed to interview the show’s executive producer Leong Lye Lin. She disclosed that Pow will only be filming until episode 31 and Seah will be stepping in from the second week of May.

There won’t be any changes to the show’s plot nor will there be an explanation for the change in actors.

Leong described Pow’s character as a “cute and happy” Ah Beng recently released from prison who is driven to start anew, encouraged by his older brother (played by Elvin Ng).

She also shared that Seah was an ideal replacement for Pow as he shares similar looks, skills and age (they’re both 30).

“Some might assume it’s an easy character to play, but it’s not ’cos you have to be someone who is naughty yet lovable at the same time.” Leong said. Plus, the character is meant to be “very manly”.

Luckily, Seah could step in as he has just wrapped up the shoot for his previous show.

Seah was also present for the interview. He expressed how “complicated” it is to replace his good friend in this new drama.

“I was sad, but when Shane heard about it, he was very encouraging and told me, ‘Bro, if you need any help, let me know. I’ve got your back.’ I’m really touched that I have such a good friend,” he explained.

We’ve got to hand it to Pow. He’s surely keeping his spirits up for both of them. Nothing beats professionalism and good friendship. Way to go!

Leong said Pow is doing well and being “very brave” as he’s focused on completing his remaining work with them.

“All we can do now is to give him our biggest encouragement and hope that he can complete his remaining scenes smoothly,” Leong said.

It’s a bummer that Pow has to leave, but one thing’s for sure, he’ll make a good comeback in the near future.

Migrant worker leaves construction job, now runs successful Yishun biryani stall

Singapore – A migrant worker from Bangladesh is behind the successful Briyani 47 stall in Yishun, which sells authentic biryani that sells out by 3.30 pm every day.

The story of Bepar Sharief was featured by The Straits Times on Wednesday (Apr 28), illustrating a journey that started from a home kitchen.

Mr Sharief had come to Singapore eight years ago from Bangladesh and worked as a construction worker for six years.

He then returned to his home country for skills training. When he returned, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) assisted Mr Sharief in transferring to a food company.

The owner of the company, Mr Reuben, acknowledged Mr Sharief’s cooking skills, and from there, Briyani 47 was created.

Located at a kopitiam at Block 343 Yishun Ave 11, Briyani 47 is known for its Bangladeshi-style biryani, which, according to ST, sells out by 3.30 pm almost daily.

Proof of their success can also be confirmed through a second stall which is opening soon.

The company said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Apr 27) that the new outlet is located “right smack in the middle of Serangoon and Hougang”.

“We look forward to bringing heaps of biryani goodness to your doorstep,” the post added.

To date, Mr Sharief has been running Biryani 47 for two years. He is also a shareholder in the business and is gradually paying Mr Reuben back, he said.

“Master Chef Sharief! Our solo player who works day and night to produce his biryani with his utmost love and passion,” read a post on their page.

Mr Sharief acquired a passion for cooking at a young age and honed his skills under the supervision of his mother back home.

After living in Singapore for eight years, Mr Sharief noted he now considers the country to be his second home.

Mr Sharief’s Dhum Briyani is cooked with chicken curry that is prepared for six hours. He wakes up at 5 am every day to prepare the curry steeped in herbs and spices, noted Facebook page Singapore Foodie that also featured his story./TISG

Christopher Lee shares an incident that stuck with him after serving four weeks in prison

Singapore – After the recent charges local celebrities Terence Cao and Shane Powfaced had to face for breaching social distancing measures and DUI, it was renowned actor Christopher Lee’s turn to talk about his fair share of troubles in the past.

Lee was caught for drink-driving and a hit-and-run accident in 2006. He was given a four-week jail sentence, fined S$4,500 and banned from driving for three years.

He spoke about it recently when he and his friend, actor Brandon Wong, were the featured guests on the talk show series The Inner Circle.

Photo: Screengrab from The Inner Circle Live

Recalling the incident, Wong told host Guo Liang: “We knew something had happened. We asked him about it, but Christopher is the sort who would only share his troubles when he’s ready to talk. If he isn’t, we would only add to his misery if we kept prodding him about it. So all we could do then was let him settle it on his own.”

Wong said when Lee was released from prison, he and some friends went in their cars to pick him up and “hide” him without catching the media’s attention. Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan as a crowd of reporters and photographers turned up.

A couple of (edited) old news clips were featured in this episode, showing Lee walking out of prison alone and uneasily smiling at the reporters surrounding him.

He couldn’t spot any of his friends, he told Guo Liang when asked on the talk show. He said that he had to remain calm when the reporters were questioning him but he didn’t want to say anything.

Photo: Screengrab from The Inner Circle Live

It wasn’t long before he saw a taxi approaching him that was coincidentally available for hire. He flagged it down. “Once I got into the cab, I told the driver who I was, and he replied, ‘I know who you are. It’s okay, I’ll drive you out.’

“I was very touched. He asked if anyone had come to pick me up. He told me to call my family and friends to ask where they are, and he would send me there to meet up with them,” Lee said.

What a precious moment, indeed. It’s obvious that Lee bounced back from his mistake – and isn’t afraid to stand up to it. He’s come a long way, given his achievements.

In 2009 he married actress Fann Wong. In 2014, Lee and his wife welcomed their son, Zed. He also took home the Best Lead Actor title at Taiwan’s Golden Bell Awards.

In 2020, he was in Taiwan to film drama series Pursuers and was featured in Stephanie Sun’s song What Remains.

Ho Ching posts in support of gay rights; Hossan Leong & others say, ‘Start in our own backyard’

Singapore — Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s wife Ho Ching has shared articles in support of gay rights on Facebook. In response, others are urging her to push for change in Singapore.

“Let’s start in our own backyard shall we?” wrote Mr Hossan Leong, a Singaporean stage and screen actor, television host, radio deejay and comedian.

Mdm Ho, who is also the CEO of Temasek Holdings, posted two Facebook updates within five minutes of each other, sharing articles in support of gay rights, on Wednesday (Apr 29) afternoon.

Both the articles were from Economist.com.

The first article was titled “For gay people, Europe is still a divided continent’. Mdm Ho captioned the post by saying: “I wish we would treat people as people, and not stigmatise them.”

The second article she shared was “On gay rights, young Africans share the intolerance of their elders’. Sharing it, Mdm Ho wrote: “Fear of the different
and intolerance of the other.”

Gay sex is punishable under the law in Singapore.

Section 377A of the Penal Code under the words “Outrages on decency” states, “Any male person who, in public or private, commits, or abets the commission of, or procures or attempts to procure the commission by any male person of, any act of gross indecency with another male person, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 2 years.”

In 2007, after a heated parliamentary debate over whether Section 377A should be repealed, the law remained on the books, but the Government said it will not be enforced.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said then that the status quo must remain despite the “legal untidiness and ambiguity”.

In January, three men who separately challenged the constitutionality of Section 377A appealed to a five-judge panel against a High Court decision last year to dismiss their cases.

The trio were Dr Roy Tan Seng Kee, a retired general practitioner and activist for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights; Mr Johnson Ong Ming, a disc jockey; and Mr Bryan Choong, the former executive director of LGBT non-profit organisation Oogachaga.

They contended that Section 377A, which was enacted in 1938, should be struck down as it violates Article 12 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before the law.

They argued that the law criminalises sex acts only between homosexual men, but not acts between homosexual women or heterosexuals.

In response, Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon said the “political compromise” struck by the Government in 2007 – to keep Section 377A of the Penal Code but not enforce it – should be a factor in determining whether the law, which criminalises sex between men, passes muster.

Mdm Ho’s sharing of articles in support of gay rights was greeted with a stream of comments.

Besides Mr Hossain Leong, others also called for change.
