Lift padding absence sparks controversy over construction workers’ lift ban in HDB block

Singapore — A Reddit thread highlighting an issue involving HDB lift ban for construction workers has been circulating, leaving some netizens upset. In the thread, a photo depicted construction workers being restricted from using a lift in an HDB block in Jurong due to a lack of lift padding.

The sign, which was posted for Home Improvement Programme (HIP) workers, read: “Do not use the lift to carry any Materials for HIP workers. Carry by STAIRCASE.” This Jurong construction workers staircase issue has become a matter of concern for many netizens.

“Is it just me or is it a little unreasonable to not provide an alternative to carry up building materials for over 10 flights of stairs? How is this WSHA approved?,” wrote a local Redditor in a thread posted on Friday (Dec 11).

Even though the post was updated to mention the removal of the sign, many netizens had the time to drop disapproving comments, further fuelling the Home Improvement Programme lift controversy.

Others expressed similar views.

One commenter guessed that the problem stemmed from residents being unable to use the lift when they needed it.

There were also netizens who compared this situation with how migrant workers have been treated in their dormitories.

According to an article in Shin Min Daily News, the contractor placed the notice beside the lift at Jurong East Street 24. The lack of lift padding resulted in the current predicament.

Contrarily, private condominiums usually have a dedicated lift with proper lift padding for the renovation workers to use when people are moving in or out. This padding is required to prevent damage to the lift and other fixtures from heavy items or trolleys that carry construction materials.

In contrast, private condominiums usually have a dedicated lift for the renovation workers to use and when people are moving in or out.

These buildings also require renovation companies and movers to install padding in lifts as well as floor protection, which are usually made available in the condo.

Companies are required to use padding in lifts to prevent glass and other fixtures from being damaged by heavy items or trolleys that carry heavy materials, and floor protection is used to protect against damage to floor tiles in the lift, the lobby and the passageway from the car park.

In the HDB case mentioned earlier, Shin Min Daily News reported that residents had  complained to the staff at the HDB that they had often been unable to use the lift because it was used by the workers.

To address this, a temporary lift was then built for the use of the workers, hopefully with adequate lift padding. /TISG

Customer could have mistaken dried cuttlefish for cockroach, says stall owner

0

Singapore — Although his customer alleged that there was a cockroach in his food, the stall owner says the former possibly mistook dried cuttlefish, which was used to cook the soup broth, as a cockroach.

According to a stomp.straitstimes.com report, the customer, a Mr Tan, had placed a lunchtime order for noodles from Taste Beyond Taste Ban Mian & Fish Soup, a food stall at Block 156, Yishun Street 11. The order was delivered by FoodPanda.

The order was for three bowls of noodles for himself and two friends. However, Mr Tan decided to eat before the others because he was hungry.

He was about five to seven mouthfuls into his meal when his spoon scooped up a cockroach with some noodles and soup. One of the legs of the insect was detached.

Mr Tan reported the incident to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on the same day. He also received a full refund from FoodPanda.

However, the SFA’s investigation showed that the stall did not infringe any food safety and hygiene requirements.

In response to media queries, SFA confirmed that an inspection on the food stall was conducted after receipt of feedback. “We did not detect any infringements of our food safety and hygiene requirements during the inspection.”

“Food safety is a joint responsibility,” it said. “While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices.”

In a follow-up report by Shin Min Daily News, the stall owner said Mr Tan possibly mistook dried cuttlefish, which was used to cook the soup broth, as cockroach. “If what’s in the noodles is really a cockroach, I’m willing to apologise to Tan,” the stall owner told the Chinese daily.

It was also reported that the owner felt disheartened after the incident and decided to close down the shop. She added that she plans to take a short break and find other job opportunities instead. /TISG

“Wah! If hold elections now, sure PAP landslide,” says Bertha Henson

Singapore — After Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Monday afternoon (Dec 14) that Singapore was going to enter Phase 3 of reopening on Dec 28 and that Covid-19 vaccines would be made available to all Singaporeans by next year, journalist-turned-university professor Bertha Henson posted on Facebook: “Wah! If hold elections now, sure PAP landslide.”

If Prof Henson is right and the People’s Action Party gets a boost in people’s confidence, it would certainly be welcome, as 2020 has been a challenging year for the party.

Indeed, since Mr Lee’s announcement was good news to all Singaporeans, Prof Henson’s Facebook post, however tongue-in-cheek, was not overly surprising.

Her post must have struck a chord with many, who reacted to, commented on and shared it.

One commenter, however, wondered about the absence of Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat in the context of Monday’s announcement since he is expected to take over when Mr Lee steps down as indicated before his 70th birthday on Feb 10, 2022.

Indeed, if the party gains traction from Monday’s announcement, it comes at a time when it could certainly use it. While the PAP undoubtedly enjoys a supermajority that any party in any country would envy, 2020 still saw opposition parties make unprecedented gains, especially during the General Election in July.

First, the PAP won a 61.24 per cent share of the votes cast in the elections. Again, this would be a sign of great confidence in other countries. However, its share of votes this year went down from 69.86 per cent in the 2015 elections.

Moreover, 10 seats in Parliament are now occupied by opposition figures, with the Workers’ Party (WP) winning an additional Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in Sengkang.

In the biggest upset of the elections, political newbies Ms He Ting Ru, Associate Professor  Jamus Lim, Ms Raeesah Khan and Mr Louis Chua were able to beat and unseat a PAP slate that included three incumbent political office-holders.

Another warning sign for the party was the poor performance of Mr Heng and his team in  East Coast GRC.

The Deputy Prime Minister anchored the PAP team against a WP team led by the popular Nicole Seah and won by a very narrow margin — 53.39 per cent of votes to the WP’s 46.61 per cent. This was hardly seen as a vote of confidence for the Prime Minister-in-waiting.

But the public’s memory can be short-lived. And whether or not the PAP can translate Monday’s good news into real political capital remains to be seen. /TISG

Is Taylor Swift’s new song about Selena Gomez?

0

Taylor Swift just launched her new album evermore. Fans are convinced that the song Dorothea is about Selena Gomez. Even though the album has only been launched for a couple of hours, Taylor Swift fans are sure that the song is about Selena Gomez, whom she has been close friends with forever and there is evidence proving that it is so. This Twitter thread shed light on the matter.

A lot of other Taylor Swift fans are pointing out the same connections.

It is also known that Selena Gomez’ favourite movie is ‘Wizard of Oz’ where the heroine is called Dorothy.

There is also the connection to Wizard of Oz.

Selena Gomez also played a character named Dot before.

Here are the full lyrics for you to decide whether it is true.

Hey, Dorothea, do you ever stop and think about me?
When we were younger down in the park
Honey, making a lark of the misery
You got shiny friends since you left town
A tiny screen’s the only place I see you now
And I got nothing but well-wishes for ya

[Pre-Chorus]
Ooh, this place is the same as it ever was
Ooh, but you don’t like it that way

[Chorus]
It’s never too late to come back to my side
The stars in your eyes shined brighter in Tupelo
And if you’re ever tired of bеing known for who you know
You know, you’ll always know me, Dorothea (Uh-uh)
Dorothea (Ah-ah)

[Post-Chorus]
Ooh, you’rе a queen sellin’ dreams, sellin’ makeup and magazines
Ooh, from you I’d buy anything

[Verse 2]
Hey, Dorothea, do you ever stop and think about me?
When it was calmer, skipping the prom just to piss off your mom and her pageant schemes
And damn, Dorothea, they all wanna be ya
But are you still the same soul I met under the bleachers? Well…

[Pre-Chorus]
Ooh, I guess I’ll never know
Ooh, and you’ll go on with the show

[Chorus]
But it’s never too late to come back to my side
The stars in your eyes shined brighter in Tupelo
And if you’re ever tired of being known for who you know
You know, you’ll always know me, Dorothea (Uh-uh)
Dorothea (Ah-ah)

Observant fans noted that Dorothea was a reference to Selena’s favourite movie which is The Wizard of Oz, while Dorothy was the name of a character Selena played in The Fundamentals of Caring.

Some fans are convinced that the lyrics ‘You got shiny friends since you left town’ is a reference to the celebrity pals Selena has made since she moved to Hollywood from her hometown in Texas.

The lyrics where Dorothea is ‘a queen selling dreams, makeup and magazines’ maybe be referring to Selena’s new Rare Beauty makeup range as well as the myriad of magazine covers she has graced over the years.

The line ‘a tiny screen’s the only place I see you now’ may be referencing how the two friends can only communicate over FaceTime during the lockdown.

Taylor sings about ‘mom and her pageant schemes’ on the track, potentially referencing the pageants Selena took part in as a child.

Pritam Singh regrets not being able to hold thank-you lunch for WP volunteers

Singapore—Leader of the Opposition and Workers’ Party (WP) head Mr Pritam Singh took to Facebook on Monday night (Dec 14) to honour one of the WP’s volunteer polling agents, a 71-year-old woman, Madam Leong.

He expressed regret that the party is unable to hold its customary thank-you lunch for its volunteers, given that Singapore is still under restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Singh made mention of the announcement Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong earlier on Monday, that Singapore would enter Phase 3 by Dec 28.

“But even as we welcome Phase 3 at the end of the month as announced by the Prime Minister earlier today, COVID-19 has not allowed the Party to hold our usual thank you lunch for volunteers. It has been a matter of some regret for the Party that we have not been able to do so. But as we all recognise, public health considerations are far more important in the circumstances,” wrote the WP head.

Mr Singh posted a photo of himself with Mdm Leong, who had been to his MPS “to share some of her observations” as a WP volunteer polling agent in East Coast GRC.

“Polling agents are appointed by the election agents of candidates. Their duty is to ensure that an election is carried out in accordance to the law.”

He added that because of the WP’s small size, the party depends heavily on volunteers such as Mdm Leong.

Additionally, Mr Singh added, “Their participation also helps to demystify the political process and the voting secrecy.”

The WP chief went on to explain that as long as one is a Singaporean citizen, he or she may volunteer as a polling agent. Polling agents also cannot be a primary or secondary school student, an undischarged bankrupt, nor can he or she have had an order of supervision made against him/her under the Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Act.

With these requirements in mind, Mr Singh encouraged more seniors “to follow Mrs Leong’s lead and sign up as polling agents in future!”

He expressed a special thank you to her, as well as “every polling agent who helped us out at GE2020.”

A thank-you lunch for WP’s volunteers would have meant much to the party members, especially perhaps this year, which has been momentous for the WP.

The leading opposition party in Singapore has had a banner year, winning unprecedented gains in July’s General Election, most notably its second Group Representation Constituency in Sengkang. The party now has 10 Members of Parliament, more than it has had in history.

With fresh faces in its lineup in the election as well as digital savvy in an election year where many activities were held online, the WP won the hearts of many young people in Singapore.

In October, London-based political analyst and research manager Loke Hoe Yeong was quoted in the US-based media website OZY as saying, “The ruling PAP has long claimed that majority-Chinese Singapore is not ready for a non-Chinese Prime Minister. This General Election has shown that Singaporeans are ‘ready’ for a non-Chinese leader of the opposition, who is technically a prime minister-in-waiting under the Westminster system.”

OZY also quoted research fellow at the International Institute of East Asian Studies in the Netherlands, Ying-Kit Chan, as saying that the youth “appear willing to experiment with a politically pluralistic system and taste a higher degree of freedom, which includes Internet or online speech and expression of views that are critical of the government”. —/TISG

He is married to fellow actress Carina Lau and his last update on Weibo was in August 2018 when he promoted his movie Europe Raiders (2018), the third instalment in director Jingle Ma’s Raiders action-packed adventure series.

The 58-year-old wrote: “People often ask me what exactly is acting? Let me act for you in this mobile game.”

The clip went viral with more than 28,000 comments in a few hours after it was posted. As of Sunday (December 13), the post was shared more than 165,000 times.

Tony just completed filming for the upcoming Marvel film Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, in which he plays the villain The Mandarin. His character was renamed Wenwu when Marvel Studios revealed the full cast on December 12 with some netizens speculating that the name was changed to avoid being seen as perpetuating racist stereotypes. Born on June 27 1962, Tony Leung Chiu-wai is a Hong Kong actor and singer. He is considered one of Asia’s most successful and internationally recognised actors and was named as “Small Tiger” among Five Tiger Generals of TVB.

No Covid-19 vaccine for pregnant women, children under 16 & immunocompromised patients

Singapore—The Expert Committee that advised the Government on the Covid-19 vaccine strategy has mentioned three groups who will not be given vaccine doses: women who are pregnant, children younger than 16 years old, and people who are immunocompromised or have an impaired immune system.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Monday (Dec 14) that Singapore is entering Phase 3 of its reopening on Dec 28 and that the first shipment of Covid-19 vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech will arrive in the country by the end of this month.

By the third quarter of next year, PM Lee added, there will be enough doses of the vaccine for all Singaporeans and long-term residents, but the vaccine will not be mandatory.

They will, however, be free, the Prime Minister also said.

The three groups of people will not be administered the vaccines because there is not enough data as yet to ensure that the vaccine will be safe and effective for their particular cases.

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) authorized the vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech for pandemic use in Singapore after looking into its clinical trial data and scientific evidence of the dosages.

In 2021, more batches from three different pharmaceutical companies will be coming.

As mentioned by PM Lee in his speech, Advance Purchase Agreements have been made by the Government with Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, and Sinovac, with further discussions being made with other drug manufacturers.

This was done to ensure that Singaporeans would be among the first to get the vaccine, and not the last, said PM Lee.

The Expert Committee on Covid-19 Vaccination said that priority for getting the vaccines would be given to those who are at the highest risk, including those who work in healthcare and the frontlines, as well as vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those who are at the greater risk of severe disease from COVID-19 infection.

PM Lee said that he and his older colleagues in the Cabinet would be early recipients of the vaccine.

He added, “When you get yourself vaccinated, you are not just protecting yourself. You are also doing your part to protect others, especially your loved ones.”

The Expert Committee will be sharing its detailed advice about the overall vaccination strategy for the country with its specific recommendations on each of the vaccines in the weeks to come.

In the press conference the multi-ministry taskforce held after PM Lee’s address, Gan Kim Yong, the Health Minister said that the vaccine had not been made mandatory as the authorities want to “respect people’s choice.”

Mr Gan also said that there is a variety of health conditions that Singaporeans have and that health professionals may need to specifically match people who have medical conditions with the vaccine appropriate for them. —/TISG

Cast of Eternals: Gemma Chan Talks About Her Return to the MCU and the Upcoming Epic Film Eternals

0

London-born actress Gemma Chan thought her days in the Marvel Cinematic Universe were over and done with after her character Minn-Erva bit the dust in 2019’s Captain Marvel. Now, she joins the cast of Eternals, an exciting new project from Marvel.

“My character dies in [Captain Marvel], so I thought there was no chance that I would really be coming back, which I was a bit bummed about,” Gemma Chan said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“But then I encountered [Marvel Studios’ Chief Creative Officer] Kevin Feige during the awards circuit for Crazy Rich Asians and out of the blue, he just came up and said, ‘We’d love to have you back. We’d love to make better use of you. We want you to do something else, so let’s find that project.’ But, to be honest, I had no idea that it would be so soon.”

Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma also stars in two MCU movies. Picture: Instagram

The project turned out to be Eternals, about a race of immortal aliens living on Earth and shaping its history and civilization. The cast of Eternals also stars Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridoff, and Don Lee.

Gemma Chan‘s role is Sersi, a sorceress with the power to transform any object or person. She also has super-strength and ability to fly. Gemma Chan had to audition opposite Madden.

In the interview, Gemma Chan said Eternals is very different from Captain Marvel. “It’s a really epic story. Very ambitious. There are lots of new characters. I feel like it’s going to be a superhero movie that is not like a superhero movie. That sounds like a very obvious thing to say, but they’re trying to do something different with this film. So we’re all crossing our fingers that it works and that people respond to it.”

She added, “We shot a lot on location, using a lot of natural light. Yeah, again, it felt very different. We did some stuff in studio, but a lot of stuff on location. There wasn’t that much bluescreen stuff, which I did quite a lot of on Captain Marvel.”

The actress isn’t the only actor to have played multiple characters in the MCU. Other double-role club members include Alfre Woodward (Luke CageCaptain America: Civil War), Mahershala Ali (Luke CageBlade), and Kenneth Choi (Captain America: The First AvengerSpider-Man: Homecoming).

Eternals is directed by Chloe Zhao who has been attracting Oscar buzz for the Frances McDormand-starring drama Nomadland — originally slated to come out in November 2020, but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic to November 2021. The movie opens in Singapore on Oct 28.

Gemma’s latest project, Steven Soderbergh’s Let Them All Talk, just premiered on HBO Max. No word on when it will drop on HBO Go.

Lawrence Wong, “Promise Made. Promise Kept”

Singapore—Education Minister Lawrence Wong took to Facebook on Monday night (Dec 14) to show that he made good on a promise from six months ago about making the vaccine available to everyone in Singapore.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Monday afternoon that not only was Singapore entering Phase 3 of reopening on Dec 28, but that the country would be getting the first doses of Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech by the end of the month.

Moreover, PM Lee said that the vaccine would be free for all Singaporeans and long-term residents, although it would not be made mandatory, and that enough doses would be available for all of Singapore by the third quarter of next year.

Mr Wong, who co-chaired the multi-ministry task force assigned to deal with the issues stemming from the pandemic along with Health Minister Gan Kim Yong, has been at the forefront of Singapore’s efforts to fight Covid-19.

He wrote in his post, “Promise Made. Promise Kept.”

“9 June: I shared in my ministerial broadcast that we will secure the vaccines and make them available to all Singaporeans who need it.

14 Dec: We announce that the first batch of vaccines will be here by year-end. If all goes according to plan, we will have enough to vaccinate everyone in Singapore by Q3 next year; and the vaccines will be free.”

Mr Wong had been one of the speakers in a series of National Broadcasts by Government leaders earlier this year. As the then-National Development Minister, he said on June 9, “If and when a vaccine becomes available, we will make sure that every Singaporean who needs it gets it, and at an affordable price.”

Regarding Phase 3 of the country’s reopening, Mr Wong outlined in an earlier post the key changes that the new phase will bring, include allowing social gatherings of up to eight individuals and bigger capacity limits for spaces such as malls and other attractions.

He added, “Over the course of Phase 3 itself, we will continue to review and consider further relaxation of the measures, provided we are able to keep the infection well under control.”

Mr Wong also underlined that the battle is not yet over, and urged Singaporeans ”to remain focused and disciplined all the way to the end,” and to stay united in fighting the pandemic. “Let’s make 2021 a better, healthier, and safer year for all of us!” he added.

The minister is perceived to have done well as the co-chair, and often the more visible face of the country’s efforts against Covid-19, remaining calm and pro-active even when Singapore’s infections rose to 1,000 a day in March and April.

One exception to his usually calm demeanour was in Parliament on March 25, when he fought back tears as he made a speech.

Mr Wong could barely hold in his emotions as he endeavoured to express gratitude to those on the front lines who have staked their lives in fighting the spread of the disease.

It took him several tries to get his words out, pausing a few times, and asking his fellow MPs to give him a moment before he could finish this sentence: “Words are not sufficient to express our appreciation for the Singaporeans who are going all-out to fight the virus.”

He went on to say, “And I just want to say a big ‘Thank You’ to everyone who is doing their part.” —/TISG

Sofia Richie and Scott Disick ‘outgrew’ each other

Model Sofia Richie shared that she and Scott Disick ‘outgrew’ each other. The 22-year-old and the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star, 37 have split up over the summer after dating for three years with insiders citing a number of reasons for their breakup.

Sofia shared some quotes on her Instagram story on Thursday saying that they had become ‘different people.’ She posted a collection of poems on her social media, projecting her emotions to her 6.5 million followers.

The poem read:  ‘sometimes we outgrow people we used to know and become different people. when growth happens, some people take our changes personally, not because they have something against us but because they don’t recognize the person you are now. you are not responsible for people’s assumptions of you. you are not responsible to remain the person people remember you to be.’ It continued, ‘you loved the person I was, i love the person i’m becoming.’

A second post titled ‘learning’, to which she wrote, ‘This.’ on the photo said: ‘learning to smile through it all. learning to breathe through it all. learning to love through it all. learning.’

Sofia Richie and Scott Disick ‘outgrew’ each other. Picture: Instagram

When it was first reported that the pair had broken up, some said that Sofia wanted to ‘do her own thing’ while Scott was dealing with his mental health. They reconciled again briefly but ended things for good in August. An insider shared with ET that Sofia was not in a place where she could be a stepmother figure at her young age to Scott’s three children whom he shares with Kourtney Kardashian. She was reportedly devastated when she found out that Scott was moving on so quickly.

In October Scott was spotted going to dinner with model Bella Banos and he was linked to a number of blonde models including Megan Blake Irwin who he was spotted with just two weeks later. Sofia unfollowed him on social media and in recent months has moved on with Matthew Morton, 27 who is the son of Hard Rock Hotelier Peter Morton.

In October sources said that the pair are not serious, ‘She’s having fun and isn’t looking for a relationship,’ just weeks later her camp seemed to confirm the romance.

source said: ‘Matt and Sofia are totally a thing, and he’s really excited about it. They both run in the same circle and have known each other. So, it’s easy and fun for both of them. Sofia’s family approves of him, which is super nice for her.’

Sofia’s father Lionel Richie reportedly was not super keen on Scott which ‘played a big role in [the couple’s] issues’ while they were together.

In recent weeks Scott has been linked to 19-year-old model Amelia Hamlin who is the daughter of Real Housewife Of Beverly Hills star Lisa Rinna.

The two have been seen frolicking on the beach in Malibu and having romantic dinners, which caused Sofia to feel betrayed by the Hamlin family – and swiftly unfollowing them on Instagram – as they were family friends.
