Singapore is first country in Asia to take in Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine

Singapore — The first batch of Covid-19 vaccines for Singapore arrived in the country on Monday evening (Dec 21).

The city-state is the first country in Asia to take in the vaccine, which has been developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.

The vaccines arrived on a Singapore Airlines (SIA) B747-400 freighter (SQ7979), which left Brussels in Belgium on Sunday landed at Singapore Changi Airport at 7.36 pm on Monday, according to a report on channelnewsasia.

The vaccine has been developed by US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and German firm BioNTech, and has an efficacy rate of 95 per cent. However, pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems and those under the age of 16 should not receive the vaccine as the safety and efficacy data on these groups are not yet available.

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said that some people may experience side-effects such as pain, redness, swelling at the injection site, as well as fatigue, headache and muscle ache after vaccination.

It said that, while not everyone will experience these side-effects, they are “common and expected” as part of the body’s natural response to build immunity against Covid-19.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which uses mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) technology, needs to be kept at minus 70 degrees Celsius, which presents some logistical challenges.

As such, after the vaccines were received, they were sent for storage and ground transportation at the SATS cold-chain facility.

During his most recent update on the Covid-19 situation on Dec 14, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced that the HSA had approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for pandemic use.

He added that the committee of doctors and experts that the Ministry of Health had set up to recommend a vaccination strategy for the country proposed that the entire adult population should be vaccinated but to make vaccinations voluntary.

“First priority will be given to those who are at greatest risk: Healthcare workers and frontline personnel, as well as the elderly and vulnerable. Thereafter, the committee proposes to progressively vaccinate the rest of the population, and to cover everyone who wants a vaccination by the end of next year,” Mr Lee said.

He added: “The Government has accepted these recommendations. I have personal confidence in our experts. My colleagues and I, including the older ones, will be getting ourselves vaccinated early. This is to show you, especially seniors like me, that we believe the vaccines are safe.”

“We have decided to make vaccinations free for all Singaporeans, and for all long-term residents who are currently here.”

SIA said it had conducted a successful trial on Dec 19 on the same freighter flight route using thermal shippers, which are also known as cool boxes. The internal temperature of each box was actively tracked throughout the delivery, added the channelnewsasia report. /TISG

PSP leaders help bring in more than S$100,000 from its first virtual fund-raising concert

Singapore — The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) held its first virtual fund-raising concert on Sunday evening  (Dec 20) and brought in more than S$100,000 that, as one of the hosts said, will go toward its efforts to build “a more just and compassionate society”.

The star of the show was, without question, party founder and secretary-general Dr Tan Cheng Bock. Among the two songs he performed was Glen Campbell’s Try A Little Kindness.

Dr Tan told the people tuning in from their homes: “I think this song carried a lot of meaning for me because over the past two years, when I was trying to start this political party, I had so many kind souls coming to me and helping me. And in times when I was really down, they were there for me.”

He dedicated the song to them, as well as to all Singaporeans.

“If you like this song, please join us,” Dr Tan said.

For his second song later in the evening, the PSP head smilingly said: “Now they want me to sing a Mandarin song. And they all know I can’t speak Mandarin. I’m a Hokkien speaker. But since you all have chosen this song, I will try. And I hope my back-up singers will help me a lot.” And Dr Tan gave a heart-felt rendition of the beautiful Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin (The Moon Represents My Heart).

The party’s assistant secretary-general, Mr Francis Yuen, delivered a rousing and timely rendition of Feliz Navidad, followed by an original song, to round off the  concert.

He said: “We stand for hope, transparency, openness, compassion, and accountability.”

More than 1,000 people joined PSP’s online fund-raiser, which was broadcast over its Facebook and YouTube accounts from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm on Sunday. (If you missed it, and would still like to see Dr Tan, Mr Yuen and others in action, you may do so here.

Those who might still want to donate to the party’s cause, may also do so via PSP’s website.

A grateful Dr Tan said: “We’d like to thank our donors for their generous support and donations towards our cause. The support that we have received from our party members and supporters is heartwarming and I like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

Mr Yuen added: “We work hard and play hard and it is the time of the year for us to let our hair down and have fun. Kudos to Michael Chua and his team for putting this virtual concert together.”

PSP has hinted that this is but a taste of things to come, as it hopes to do a live concert when the Covid-19 pandemic is over. /TISG

Tony Leung botches up scene in new film

0

No one would have guessed that the successful, award-winning Hong Kong actor Tony Leung would mess up on set because of a piece of jewellery.

His latest project action thriller Fox Hunt’s behind-the-scenes clip went viral because of the actor’s adorable blunder. In the clip, Tony gifts a diamond necklace to his onscreen lover, played by former Bond girl, Olga Kurylenko. He is seen putting the necklace on her and is supposed to look manly and romantic.

However, that small and simple act was botched up. He tried to close the clasp on the necklace for a couple of seconds (with a hilariously confused expression on his face) and then he gives up and apologises for not being able to put on the necklace for Olga. Olga could not help but turn around and laugh at Tony. A crew member came over to assist him but the actor insisted on trying to figure out how to work the jewellery himself.

This funny little blunder is a stark contrast to the usual intense, brooding Tony who was given the nickname “Electric Eyes” for his magnetic gaze. Fans pointed out that the 58-year-old may be suffering from presbyopia (long-sightedness due to old age) based on his squint and body language. The actor also faced age-shaming remarks recently. His vision-related struggles may have begun a while ago.

His wife Carina Lau shared in a 2014 interview that she saw him wearing reading classes and was shocked that he was becoming an “old man”. She then accepted that it is part of life.

Born June 27 1962, Tony Leung Chiu-wai is a Hong Kong actor and singer. He is considered one of Asia’s most successful and internationally recognised actors and was named as “Small Tiger” among Five Tiger Generals of TVB. He has won many international acting prizes, including the Cannes Film Festival award for Best Actor for his performance in Wong Kar-wai’s film In the Mood for Love. Tony is widely considered the best native Hong Kong actor of his generation. He was named by CNN as one of “Asia’s 25 Greatest Actors of All Time”.

PM Lee only leader who promised to give migrant workers same access to health care -Vivian Balakrishnan

Singapore—Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister, was interviewed on CNBC Asia’s Squawk Box Asia on December 17 to further discuss Singapore’s plans for the Covid-19 vaccine, including giving migrant workers the same access to it.

Last week, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced in a public address (Dec 14) that the country would be entering Phase 3 of reopening, with more restrictions lifted, on Dec 28. Furthermore, he added that the first shipment of the vaccine would be coming by the end of this month and that it would be free for Singaporeans and long-term residents, although it would not be made mandatory.

A few days later, on International Migrants’ Day (Dec 18), PM Lee wrote in a Facebook post that the vaccine will also be offered to migrant workers, adding that more details on how this would be carried out would be available later on.

In his CNBC interview, Dr Balakrishnan also said the vaccine would be free for migrant workers, and reminded viewers of promises that PM Lee has made.

“If I was to rewind time, our Prime Minister, I think, still remains the only leader in the world, who made that assurance that we would treat migrant workers exactly the same as we would citizens, in terms of access to health care, in terms of protection. First point.

Second point, from a professional and medical perspective, a human being living in Singapore is a human being equally at risk of either getting infected or infecting others. So this is the reason why we do not discriminate on the basis of nationality, for all people domiciled, living, working, in Singapore.”

The Foreign Affairs Minister also said that the priority for giving out the vaccine would be on “the basis of risk and need” but that the migrant workers would be cared for “to the best of our ability.”

When one of the interviewers, Sri Jegarajah, said that this was “encouraging news” for the migrant worker community, Dr Balakrishnan said, It must be so. They work so hard, they sacrifice so much for their families back home. This is humanity. This is common sense. This is public health.”

As for getting vaccinated, the minister repeated PM Lee’s assertion from last week that the Cabinet “would lead by example” in getting vaccinated.

He also expressed that it was fortunate that the “anti-vaxxer” movement is less active in Singapore than in different parts of the world.

“One of our key advantages is that we have got a scientific, enlightened and rational approach to issues in Singapore. We do not politicise these matters. We want to keep an open mind, we want to maintain a transparent approach. We want to make sure that everyone who participates in this does so voluntarily, (with) informed consent, (and) understands the risk and the benefits.” —/TISG

Jamus Lim, K Shanmugam send Winter Solstice greetings and talk about tangyuan

Singapore — Both Jamus Lim and K Shanmugam wished those celebrating the occasion a Happy Winter Solstice on Monday (Dec 21).

The winter solstice, hiemal solstice or hibernal solstice occurs when one of the Earth’s poles has its maximum tilt away from the Sun. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere.

The Dongzhì Festival or Winter Solstice Festival is one of the more important Chinese and East Asian festivals celebrated on or around Dec 22 (according to East Asia time).

Traditionally, the Dongzhi Festival is also a time for the family to get together. One activity that occurs during these get-togethers is the making and eating of tangyuan (湯圓) or balls of glutinous rice, which symbolise reunion.

In his post, Sengkang GRC MP Associate Professor Lim said: “As a child, I grew up loving the unfilled 汤圆 most (I know, I was a strange kid), although I’ve since gravitated toward the sweeter versions.”

He added that he should eat the same number of glutinous rice balls as his age but joked that he will cheat and call the large one a multiple of 40.

“Our little one is still a tad too young to partake, but my better half definitely enjoyed her share,” he said.

On his own page, Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam wrote: “Today is the winter solstice, the day with the shortest period of daylight.”

He said that “many Chinese friends celebrate Dongzhi on this day”. He added a photo of tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) and noted that “they are eaten to symbolise unity and togetherness”. Mr Shanmugam wished everyone “Happy Dongzhi”. /TISG

Victoria Beckham had high levels of mercury after eating too much fish

0

After consuming too much fish, Victoria Beckham experienced “off-the-scale levels of mercury”. The former Spice Girl turned fashion designer had to remove swordfish and tuna from her diet and replace it with salmon due to the levels of methylmercury in certain types of fish.

An insider told The Sun newspaper: “Victoria had-off-the-scale levels of mercury. So doctors gave her a liver flush to help rid the body of toxins. She feels brilliant and is as lean and fit as ever.”

This is after fellow English celebrity Robbie Williams almost died after getting mercury poisoning from consuming too much fish with excess levels of mercury known to cause skin cancer and lead to lung diseases. The singer joked that he still considers his brush with death to be a ‘win’, likening the mercury in his system to the coveted music award, the Mercury Prize.

He said: “I was eating fish twice a day and I’ve got the highest mercury poisoning the doctor has ever seen. Do you know what I thought when I heard that? ‘I’ve won!’ That’s how my ego works, ‘I’ve got the highest … did you say the highest? Thank you.’ I literally won the mercury award.

“I got my mercury tested because my wife’s neurotic and she gets all sorts of tests all the time. Anyway, thank God, coz I could’ve dropped dead of mercury and arsenic poisoning.”

Now, Robbie turned to vegan to avoid the dangers that other foods can have on the body.

People are exposed to methylmercury when eating large amounts of fish – in particular tuna, swordfish and marlin. Mercury poisoning kills thousands of people around the world every year.

Born on April 17 1974, Victoria Caroline Beckham (née Adams) is an English singer, fashion designer and television personality. She rose to prominence in the 1990s as a member of the girl group the Spice Girls, in which she was nicknamed Posh Spice. With over 85 million records sold worldwide, the group became the best-selling female group of all time. After the Spice Girls split in 2001, Beckham was signed to Virgin Records, in which she released her self-titled debut solo album, which produced two UK Top 10 singles.

Fight in Clarke Quay with ‘deadly weapon’ sees blood splatter along underpass, five arrested for rioting

0

Videos circulated on social media and WhatsApp messenger over the weekend showed a bloody riot that involved at least five men at Clarke Quay in Saturday (Dec 21) night.

In the videos, several men and women were seen shouting and fighting with one another. Blood was also seen splattered on the wall and floor of the walkway leading to an underpass outside The Central as paramedics tended to a man who was lying down.

Even as the paramedics were seeing to the injured, a woman can be seen shouting at passers-by in one of the videos.

Out of the many clips uploaded and circulated, a couple of videos showed people fighting at both a restaurant, and at the underpass outside The Central.

It is understood that a flick knife was used in the fight.

Five men aged between 21 and 40 were arrested after the incident, according to the police.

Many of those fled the scene by the time police arrived.

A 27-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man at the scene were conscious when taken to the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). A 29-year-old man was arrested for disorderly behaviour, a Straits Times online report said.

A 40-year-old man suspected of being involved in the fight was found hiding in a dark corner of a back alley near Carpenter Street. He was also arrested and taken to SGH to have injuries treated.

“Four men, aged between 21 and 34, were arrested within 16 hours following the incident. A manhunt is under way to arrest the other suspects involved,” said the police.

SKTC lawyers say Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council case “involves novel and complex issues of law”

Singapore—The lawsuit filed by Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council against Workers’ Party (WP) MPs Sylvia Lim and Pritam Singh and others “involves novel and complex issues of law,” said the legal team appointed by the new Sengkang Town Council (SKTC).

The General Election in July of this year had seen a redrawing of boundaries, and Punggol East, which had been a single-member constituency (SMC), became part of the new Sengkang GRC.

Due to a by-election in 2013, Punggol East SMC was represented by the WP’s Lee Li Lian for two years. However, the People’s Action Party’s Charles Chong won at Punggol East SMC in 2015’s GE.

And now, Sengkang GRC is under the WP again. It is made up partly of the former Punggol East SMC and the Sengkang Central division of Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, both of which were previously managed by the Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council (PRPTC). It is also made up of parts of Sengkang West SMC, which was managed by Ang Mo Kio Town Council.

The PRPTC filed the lawsuit to recover alleged losses incurred by the former Punggol East SMC when it was under the WP from 2013 to 2015. It began the civil suit after the WP-run Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) had sued the same people.

A judge found that Ms Lim and Mr Low had breached their fiduciary duties to the town council and that Mr Singh had breached his duty of skill and care. The town councillors and the PRPTC are appealing against the decision.

SKTC said earlier that it is fully committed to ensuring that all decisions taken in relation to the management of the court appeals are fair, transparent and in accordance with the law.

Ms Marina Chin, the joint managing partner of the law firm Tan Kok Quan Partnership, was formally appointed on Oct 28, the same day as all the assets and liabilities of the former Punggol East Single-Member Constituency (SMC) were transferred to SKTC.

Ms Chin’s firm requested that the hearing of the case before the Court of Appeal be postponed to early 2021. It added that because of the changes to the electoral boundaries, the case may be in effect one pursued by SKTC and “involves novel and complex issues of law.”
