Jamus Lim and Team Urge Responsible Waste Disposal at Rivervale Shores to Foster Community Well-being

SINGAPORE: There is no doubt that the new BTO project Rivervale Shores in Sengkang has been a long-awaited blessing to many families and singles, but the amount of litter and renovation debris, as well as old furniture and household items, has been more than an eyesore for many.

Sengkang GRC’s Members of Parliament, the Workers’ Party’s Louis Chua, Jamus Lim and He Ting Ru, are therefore appealing “to all our new residents, to remind their contractors and sub-contractors on the importance of responsible waste disposal and housekeeping, and together, let us create a pleasant living environment for all!”

Mr Chua, who represents Rivervale ward, posted photos of the three MPs amid what appeared to be a lot of trash and debris, including one picture where Messrs Chua & Lim and Ms He are all sitting in a tub with their hands up and puzzled expression.

He wrote that aside from the problem of renovation debris, the MPs have seen many bulky items and old furniture, including sofas and bathtubs, that have been disposed around the new estate.

“We will be following up with the NEA on monitoring and enforcement actions, in relation to the indiscriminate littering and dumping of bulky refuse in the estate,” added Mr Chua.

There have been a number of posts online of the litter in the estate, with some residents claiming that the litter has encouraged the rodent and pest population in the area, which the WP MPs are tackling.

People’s Action Party member Ling Wei Hong, active on the ground at Sengkang, wrote on Aug 16 that the problem has been happening for some weeks.

However, by Aug 17, he noted that he “was quite happy to read Mr Louis Chua’s post yesterday. It seemed that TC had taken some immediate action, and I would be able to tell the resident who sought my help that I have managed to get TC’s attention.” /TISG

SINGAPORE: A woman whose husband would have violent outbursts took to social media asking netizens if she should stay until she is financially stable before filing for divorce.

In an anonymous post to popular confessions page SGWhispers, the woman wrote that she was married for 14 years to a “generally wonderful guy, hands-on with our 3 children (5, 7, 9), financially responsible, loving, surprises us with gifts and trips, do the chores etc”. However, she added that his temper was very bad and said he would flare up in arguments and use vulgarities.

“Recently, he has been physically rough with my 9yo girl. Once he threw her against the wall and few days later he tried pulling the scarf she tied around her neck roughly and it kinda chocked her in the process. This was the last straw I guess and I want out. He has hit me before we even got married and I know I am stupid to proceed with the wedding”, she wrote.

She added that while the man mostly changed after they had children, he would occasionally have his outbursts every few months. While she initially wanted to accept him, she felt that she could not live with him physically and verbally abusing their children.

The woman added that she was a stay-at-home mother without much savings and was financially dependent on her husband. “We have not spoken to him for about a week and there was a huge difference in the whole atmosphere. My children were not arguing, we are all more relaxed and happier and I take this as a sign for me to start my exit plan”, she wrote.

She added that she was looking for a job but was more concerned with housing as most of the funds in her CPF account went into her matrimonial home.

“He doesn’t know of my plan but is it a sound decision to stay until I find a job, stabilise myself financially first and then file for the divorce?” she asked netizens.

Veteran Diplomat Kishore Mahbubani Endorses Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Calls Him “No Better Choice” for President

Veteran Diplomat Kishore Mahbubani Endorses Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Calls Him "No Better Choice" for President

SINGAPORE: In a Facebook video posted on Wednesday evening (23 Mar), veteran diplomat Professor Kishore Mahbubani has endorsed presidential candidate Tharman Shanmugaratnam and has asserted that “there is no better choice” than the former Senior Minister for the presidency.

Prof Mahbubani, who is the founding dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore and Singapore’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, not only threw his weight behind Mr Tharman but also said he has three reasons with which he hopes to persuade voters to support the ex-governing party politician.

First, Prof Mahbubani said it would “help to have a President who is globally respected” as he drew on his extensive knowledge of geopolitics spanning over fifty years and predicted that Singapore and the greater Southeast Asia region will face imminent geopolitical challenges in the next decade.

Although he acknowledged that it is the Government’s job to deal with geopolitical stress, he said Mr Tharman’s “high global standing will provide Singapore with another layer of protection as we navigate stormy geopolitical waters.”

Next, he said that Mr Tharman would be a unifying figure, especially in recent social tensions and uncertainties in Singapore. Prof Mahbubani said:

“If ever there was a moment in Singapore’s history when we needed an inspirational figure as President, this is it. Few Singaporeans inspire respect in the way that Tharman does.

He is a truly unifying figure who can bring together all Singaporeans: rich and poor, privileged and less privileged, Chinese and Malays, Indians and Eurasians – indeed, all of us.”

Asserting that Mr Tharman has a big heart, the diplomat who has known Mr Tharman for more than three decades said: “His big heart will infuse our national spirit with high levels of care and compassion for each other.”

Aside from having a big heart, Prof Mahbubani added that Mr Tharman has “big thoughts and good cheer” that will help uplift the spirits of Singaporeans. He said, “So even as we sail into some stress, we can be confident that Tharman will be around to cheer us up.’

Prof Mahbubani appealed: “I sincerely hope that you will join me in voting for Tharman. There’s no better choice. If you agree, please share this message and video with your friends. Let’s come together and vote for a better future for Singapore.”

Prof Mahbubani’s endorsement comes a day after Singapore’s ambassador-at-large, Tommy Koh, backed Mr Tharman’s bid for the presidency. Interestingly, Prof Mahbubani called Prof Koh his “guru” in his video on Wednesday.

Revealing that he is a friend to all three presidential candidates, including ex-GIC chief investment officer Ng Kok Song and ex-NTUC Income chief Tan Kin Lian, Prof Koh said on Tuesday (22 Aug) that he has “decided to support Tharman for President” because he has “transcended race and is a leader for all Singaporeans.”

Praising Mr Tharman’s “independent mind,” “moral courage,” and “integrity,” Prof Koh added that the ex-politician is “well-prepared” for the custodial duties of the President, given his past roles as Finance Minister, Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and Chairman of the GIC’s Investment Strategies Committee.

Asserting that Mr Tharman will fly the Singapore flag high, Prof Koh said: “If faced with an unreasonable request to use our reserves, I believe that he will have the courage to say, no. If asked to approve the appointment of an unqualified person for a key post in the public service, I don’t think he will hesitate to reject the appointment.”

SINGAPORE: A foreign domestic helper took to social media warning other maids not to allow anyone to photograph their Work Permits.

In her post to a support group for domestic helpers and employers alike, the maid said that there were people going house to house pretending to do a survey and promising to “give $10 for the completed survey. They take photo of yr work permit. This is dangerous they can use the work permit photo to do anything in your name!”

She added that in a real survey, they would never ask for a photo of ID or give cash. The compensation would usually be in the form of a voucher, she said.

“Be careful and stay safe ladies!! Share this with you friends. Don’t let anyone take photo of yr green work permit!” the helper wrote.

In an edit to her post, she wrote: “It’s come to my attention is wasn’t house to house but at Paya Lebar. And MAYBE it was legit but it doesn’t hurt to be careful because we just need work permit photo to borrow frm loanshark. Anyways just be careful and not let anyone photograph your work permit document unless you know for a fact it is for legal purposes”.

Here’s what other helpers who commented on the post said:

Earlier this year, another foreign domestic helper fell prey to a cash-on-delivery scam and took to social media to share her situation with others.

In an anonymous post to a Facebook support group for domestic helpers and employers alike, the maid wrote that she received a parcel at her employer’s residence. “i paid it in my own money without asking or call my employer because my employer not around .its complete detail name, addres, even cp number stated there ,so i really thought its employer package”, she added.

With the proposal to abolish the elected presidency, Red Dot United is calling for the establishment of a constitutional commission. This commission would conduct a comprehensive study on creating an independent mechanism to effectively protect the nation’s reserves.

Is Tan Kin Lian’s response to “pretty girls” controversy a missed opportunity?

Is Tan Kin Lian's response to "pretty girls" controversy a missed opportunity?
YT screencapture

SINGAPORE: An alternative apology presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian could have issued for some of his Facebook posts is gaining traction online, with some Singaporeans calling how he responded to the controversy a missed opportunity.

Mr Tan Kin Lian, the former CEO of NTUC Income, has been accused of objectifying women through some of his past Facebook posts where he said he spotted “pretty girls” on public transport.

After the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) raised concerns about his “pretty girls” views, the Presidential Elections Committee, which noted Mr Tan Kin Lian’s “integrity, good character and reputation” when it issued a Certificate of Eligibility to him, said it was unaware of the controversial social media posts before qualifying him for the race.

Although Mr Tan Kin Lian apologized to women who may have felt uncomfortable by his posts, he defended his comments as lighthearted. He asserted that he was the target of a smear campaign aimed at discrediting him.

Rejecting AWARE’s “allegations and insinuations” that he objectifies women, Mr Tan added that he has remained a faithful and loving husband and father for decades. He said: “I do not objectify women since I have many in my family. I have been happily married to my loving wife for nearly 50 years. We have been faithful to each other through the years and no tinge of infidelity or scandal has ever attached to my marriage.”

His daughter also vouched for her father and called AWARE’s statement “a bit overblown” as Mr Tan’s “lighthearted compliments given to a good-looking person” should not be equated to objectifying the person.

She added: “As a woman and mother to two beautiful daughters, I believe that women should have the confidence to reject the simplistic notion that a compliment on their looks ‘trivialises them’, ‘overlooks their myriad abilities and contributions’ and ‘reduces them solely to their appearances for personal entertainment’.”

While some Singaporeans have accepted Mr Tan’s explanations, others remain troubled – especially after Mr Tan quipped in one live video that the women offended by his posts may not be the “pretty” ones.

Some Singaporeans have asserted that Mr Tan could have handled the situation better, whether he is the target of a smear campaign or not.

In this vein, a sample of an apology Mr Tan could have used is circulating on chat groups and forums online. Lawyer and socio-political commentator Michael Han originally wrote the sample on Tuesday (22 Aug). Mr Han suggested that Mr Tan could have said:

“I sincerely apologise to those for whom I have offended. Even one is one too many. Your feelings are important to me. I admit that I’ve carried it too far. I ask that you give me a chance to prove to you that I am so much more than what you see and read about.

“My family and marriage are an enduring testament to my commitment and devotion to serving you as your Ninth President, if elected. I am only human. I am not perfect. But I am always learning, correcting, and adapting, even at my age, if not more so at my age.

“And rest assured, I shall do you proud. I will not let even one sheep under my care down. That is my presidential promise to you.”

This alternative approach, which emphasizes accountability, humility, and a sincere desire to learn and grow, has resonated with many Singaporeans who found the initial response lacking. This approach has also garnered praise for highlighting the significance of addressing controversies with sensitivity and understanding diverse perspectives.

SINGAPORE: Food guru KF Seetoh had a very special guest at a Hungry Ghost Festival Getai in Toa Payoh recently with none other than Mr Jonathan Kaplan, the United States Ambassador to Singapore.

“I ask if he would like to experience a uniquely Singapore Hungry Ghost Festival Getai in Toa Payoh… @usambsg Ambassador Jonathan Kaplan gamely said yes and loved each minute. Even had fan selfies with organisers @aarontan_zhiwei and singers @peifen_leee and gang. The only reason that stopped him from crooning on stage was… no license,” wrote Mr Seetoh in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Aug 23).

The Makansutra founder even joked that Mr Kaplan would have sung onstage if he could have.

The food guru added, “Support our Getai culture..it’s unique to us. Dun enbloc this one.”

And thank you @kfseetohsg for reminding me not to sit in the front row!!! So much fun to watch the getai and meet the vibrant Toa Payoh community!”

Ambassador Kaplan was appointed to his position in late 2021. Tharman Outshines PAP in Popularity, Says Ex-NCMP Yee Jenn Jong

Tharman Outshines PAP in Popularity, Says Ex-NCMP Yee Jenn Jong
Photos: FB/Yee Jenn Jong, Tharman Shanmugaratnam

SINGAPORE: Mr Yee Jenn Jong, who served as a Non-constituency Member of Parliament from 2011 to 2015 under The Workers’ Party, weighed in again on this year’s Presidential Election, focusing in particular on ex Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

Mr Yee wrote in a recent Facebook post that there have been a number of people who have felt that they “want Tharman to be president” but “find it difficult to vote for him!”

“If the President is selected based on the pre-elected President (EP) days, I would also have gladly welcomed President Tharman. Based purely on experience, international reputation, and popularity, he is the most suitable of the three eligible,” he added. However, he underlined again that he takes issue with how “democratic processes have been engineered to fit the political purpose of one party.”

He then referred to how the most recent book of former Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo “tells quite a bit into the internal workings of the PAP,” especially concerning the presidential bid in 2011 of Dr Tan Cheng Bock.

Mr Yee stressed that the views in his post are made in his personal capacity and that he’s not endorsing a particular candidate. He only aims to do “a critical examination of why many Singaporeans are disenchanted with the PE, even when a worthy candidate shows up.”

“Tharman is immensely popular; in my opinion more popular than the PAP itself. If the contest is purely based on an individual’s credentials, he should in theory, poll higher than what the PAP had gotten in the last GE…

Tharman is riding on the establishment’s ticket and hence a vote for Tharman will feel like a vote for the PAP. Any voting is a sort of referendum on the government. This is no exception,” wrote Mr Yee.

The ex-NCMP noted that due to high living costs, partly due to the GST increase, “scandals, controversies, and a much-delayed 4G transition,” the PAP is facing trying times.

“Tharman has said that he is entering the race because things are changing, and that the next phase of Singapore’s development is going to require a different character to the presidency. I hope when he gets that position, he will indeed change the nature of the presidency to provide more independence in thinking. And I hope that one day, we will take a critical look at this institution and replace it with something like a senate to provide the safeguard, rather than to have this theatre every 6 years.”

MND Requests AHTC Details on Sylvia Lim and Pritam Singh’s Roles

0

SINGAPORE: The Ministry of National Development said in a release on Aug 22 (Tuesday) that it has written to the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) to ask for information on the powers and duties of Workers’ Party Members of Parliament Sylvia Lim and Pritam Singh.

This is in connection with the Court of Appeal finding that Ms Lim, Mr Singh, along with former WP chief Low Thia Khiang and other AHTC officials, had not acted in good faith to discharge their duties.

Ms Lim is the party chair, while Mr Singh is the current secretary general. They have both been representing Aljunied GRC in Parliament since 2011.

Last month, Mr Low and Ms Lim were found liable for negligence in the town council payments process as part of the ongoing civil trial involving the alleged misuse of S$33.7 million in AHTC funds, while Mr Singh was cleared of any wrongdoing in the matter.

On Aug 22, the MND wrote, “Given the Court of Appeal’s findings of Ms Lim and Mr Singh acting without good faith, and in gross negligence, MND has written to AHTC seeking information on:

  1. Ms Lim’s and Mr Singh’s specific powers and duties in relation to their involvement in AHTC’s payment and procurement processes,
  2. actions that AHTC intends to take, if any, in relation to Ms Lim and Mr Singh, given the CA’s findings that they acted without good faith, and in gross negligence and
  3. such other actions AHTC intends to take.”

When the response from AHTC is given, National Development Minister Desmond Lee will be considering whether further regulatory action under the Town Councils Act must be issued to safeguard public monies entrusted to the Town Council.

AHTC has been given two weeks from Aug 22 to respond, CNA reported.
