SINGAPORE: Mr Ng Kok Song, one of the three candidates for the upcoming Presidential Election, was rudely heckled while making his nomination speech on Tuesday (Aug 22).

A man can be heard interrupting Mr Ng not just once but twice. Unbothered, the candidate keeps on going, as seen in a video posted on the Singapore Incidents account on Wednesday (Aug 23).

The heckling began shortly after Mr Ng, who served as the Group Chief Investment Officer of Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) from 2007 until his retirement in 2013, said, “I do not belong to any political party.”

“Bullsh**!!!” a man’s voice can be heard saying.

Nonplussed, Mr Ng continues, “And so, I’m well placed to unite the people of Singapore to face an uncertain future.

For these three reasons, I humbly ask you, my fellow Singaporeans, to choose me as your President.”

The heckler then cries out again, “No! No! No!”

The candidate has since responded to the heckling when asked about it by reporters at a doorstop interview at Block 475A Upper Serangoon Crescent on Nomination Day.

Mr Ng called the heckler or hecklers, as there were apparently more than one, a “vocal minority” who did not matter to him.

It’s the “silent majority” who had already gone home that counted, mothership quotes him as saying.

In the meantime, his campaigning activities are in full swing. He is meeting people and shaking hands, often accompanied by his fiancee, Ms Sybil Lau.

On Wednesday, his cat, Max Lemon Ng, made a debut on the candidate’s official TikTok page, managing to win some hearts, and maybe even some voters. Max has had his own IG account, however, for the past year and a half.

After my morning visit to the market today, Max was waiting for me as usual. He is such a good boy and he always gives us his full time and attention. He even understands Teochew! I am always so happy to see him waiting when I open my door! SINGAPORE: As the former GIC chief investment officer, Mr Ng Kok Song minted money for Singapore without getting into the news. A search through the Straits Times online revealed that before his bid for the presidency, he was last in the news in February 2022.

The Straits Times published a Bloomberg report on February 18, 2022, headlined, “Former GIC exec’s low-key fund amasses $13.4 billion for global foray”. It was about Avanda Investment Management, a firm he founded.

Before Avanda, he was not in the news for a whole decade, last appearing in the Straits Times on April 8, 2012, when the newspaper ran a profile on him. Headlined “GIC chief Ng Kok Song’s unlikely fishing village roots”, it was his life story, about how he grew up in a house with a “thatched roof, mud floor, and just two bedrooms”.

His rags-to-riches story is common knowledge now, as he is all over the media in his bid to be president.

Google News results

By one count, he is more in the news than his opponent, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, a popular former senior minister with a reputation for brilliance. A Google News search for Ng Kok Song pulled up 2,440 results in 0.34 seconds compared with 1,120 results in 0.41 seconds for Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and 2,990 results in 0.36 seconds for Tan Kin Lian, the third presidential candidate.

Some of the news about the former NTUC Income chief Tan Kin Lian concerned his controversial “pretty girls” social media posts. No such issues have come up against Mr Ng Kok Song, whose habit of meditation perhaps helps him look as calm as his campaign has been so far.

Digital strategy

Mr Ng Kok Song said in an interview that as GIC chief investment officer he had to formulate a strategy. His campaign, too, has benefited from strategy — digital strategy.

Talking to reporters on a walkabout on August 23, Mr Ng said he would not be putting up posters and banners. “What’s the point of making posters and banners, hang them up for a few days, take them down and then send them to be destroyed as waste?” he said.

Instead, he is focusing on social media.

It could be a smart decision; his eschewing posters and banners could be seen as a green, ecologically friendly move, while his campaigning on social media puts him on everybody’s screen — and Google, too.

“I’m told that (my social media) reach has been quite spectacular,” he said. “One of my TikTok videos has reached more than two million people. I was very surprised by that.”

Mr Ng Kok Song apparently believes in “just in time” delivery. His Facebook page, which identifies him as a “public figure”, was created only on July 17, just two days before Channel NewsAsia reported his bid to run for president on July 19. The date of creation is mentioned under “Page transparency”.

His website has the domain name, ngkoksong.com. The domain name was created only on June 29 and updated on July 14, according to the WHOIS database found on GoDaddy.com.

But social media cannot catapult everybody to Google ubiquity. Mr Ng Kok Song has conquered Google overnight because his life story is so fabulous. From rags to riches, the young hut dweller turned investment tsar who minted money for Singapore, Mr Ng shows how far one can go in life.

He reprised that story when, after being nominated for election on August 22, he visited the place where his village once stood, knelt on the ground and kissed it.

Yes, Mr Ng Kok Song has come a long way. Now, only Mr Tharman and Mr Tan stand in his way to the Istana. They are redoubtable figures, too. /TISG

Woman says the guy she rejected for 3 years finally has a girlfriend, so she decides to ask him out now

SINGAPORE: A woman took to social media with a change of heart after she found out the guy she rejected for years finally got his own girlfriend.

In an anonymous post to popular confessions page SGWhispers, the woman wrote: “Thing is, I will never give any chance for him at all. Like pffft come on there are way better guys out there chasing me, so why should I settle for less?”

For three years, she added that the man was the sweetest to her, always a gentleman who never mistreated her and respected her decision when she said she was not interested in him. Despite her rejections, he still tried repeatedly to win her over.

“One day, he hasn’t been the same and kept his distance from me. Months later I found out he has a gf, like seriously?” she wrote, adding that it proved he was never serious to be with her in the first place. However, she added that he looked much more attractive and happy now that he had a girlfriend.

“This is so not fair. I’m thinking I should ask him out now”, the woman wrote.

Here’s what netizens who commented on the post said:

Earlier this year, a confused man who thought he was in a stable long-term relationship wanted to know how to cope when he found out his girlfriend did not think the same. In an anonymous post to confessions page NUSWhispers on Facebook, the man wrote: “I am in a stable long term rship or so I thought”.

He explained that his girlfriend recently told him that while she still wanted the relationship “for now”, she was not sure if she wanted them to be in a long-term relationship.

He added that he found her confession to be quite sudden but was sure there was no one else. “She still plans dates for us and makes quite a bit of effort for us but every few days she reminds me of what she said. This is stressful for me because I do not know if each day will be the last day”, the man wrote.

SINGAPORE: A foreign domestic helper who was worried she would be deported because she had not registered her fingerprints with the Manpower Ministry (MOM) took to social media asking for advice.

She wrote in an anonymous post to a support group that she was in her employer’s house for over a month, “and up to this day I haven’t done thumbprint”. She added that she did not have a Work Permit (WP) either.

“Recently,my employer asked me if I am done processing with my permit….I am confused coz I thought it’s their responsibility as employer”, the maid wrote. Her employer also told her to ask her agent for an update on the matter. To this, the agent told her that she would be doing it soon.

“almost 2 months…I’m afraid MOM will send me back home…any advice..Thank you so much”, the maid wrote.

Netizens who commented on the post asked her if she was a direct hire, or if she was transferred within Singapore. If she was a transfer helper she did not have to register her fingerprints. However, the maid said that after her contract ended, she went back to the Philippines and reapplied to come to Singapore.

According to the MOM website, a maid has to register her fingerprints and photo:

“When: Within 1 week after pass is issued (if required)

Check the Temporary Work Permit for whether your helper needs to register her fingerprints and photo at MOM Services Centre – Hall C. If it is required, your helper needs to register within 1 week of issuing the Work Permit.

You must make an appointment for your helper to register. It is optional for you to accompany your helper for the appointment”.

She would receive her Work Permit card within five working days after registration or document verification. /TISG

Ng Kok Song’s “Super Wayang” Campaign Tactics Draw Mixed Reactions

SINGAPORE: Some of the actions of the oldest presidential candidate in the looming election, 75-year-old Ng Kok Song, have failed to land with Singaporeans online who have called the ex-GIC chief investment officer “super wayang” and “cringy”.

Mr Ng Kok Song’s first official campaign act, where he knelt down and kissed the floor of a void deck in Serangoon Crescent, has drawn eye-rolls from netizens. Mr. Ng Kok Song said he decided to kick off his campaign in this manner to pay homage to his roots as the void deck of Block 475A Upper Serangoon Crescent is where he believes his kampung home used to be.

He told the press, “This is the exact spot where I lived with my five brothers and five sisters and my parents in a hut with an attap roof, mud on the floor, and no modern sanitation…Just now, I was filled with emotion. I knelt down to kiss the ground where I was born, and where I grew up.”

While some Singaporeans saw Mr Ng’s act as a show of his humility, others were not so impressed. Redditor u/Big-Still6880 said, “Cringe-worthy performance,” while u/singapore NFT said, “a bit cringe ah pls control.” u/planet-x1 added, “super wayang.”

u/puzzleheaded-stable questioned: “If you are going to wayang, at least show some respect for the intelligence of the Public. Who would fall for this over-the-top pandering?”

Some said that Mr. Kok Song’s actions turned them off voting for him. u/Book3pper said, “I had considered voting for him but after this, it’s just so difficult to do so. Do these guys not have PR teams or understand what to do or not to do to endear them to voters?

“It would have been heartwarming for him to have a video discussing about how this used to be his kampong etc. and how he appreciated living there. Instead, he kissed an HDB block LMAO. It’s not like his kampong is still there.”

Stay Safe from Ghosts: 10 Things to Avoid During the Hungry Ghost Festivalsays TikTok user

SINGAPORE: Stay safe from ghosts during the Hungry Ghost Festival. How? TikTok user @devilwearsbrata gave netizens a crash course on how to stay safe from ghosts during the seventh month.

@devilwearsbata #hungryghostfestival #7thmonth #horrortok #horror #tiktoksg #sgtiktok #scarystories #scarystory #horrorstories #nightmare #storytime #paranormal #paranormaltiktok ♬ Suspense, horror, piano and music box – takaya

Here’s her list of 10 things you should not do during the Hungry Ghost Festival.

1. “Do not stay out late at night.”

“The ghosts roaming around get stronger with the Yin energy from the moon at night so when you walk around, you have higher chance of getting possessed,” she explained.

2. “You should not wait at the bus stop alone late at night.”

Why? “Ghosts require transport too, and they have a special bus waiting for them,” the video creator said. “So when you’re waiting alone, there are chances the ghost might follow you back home.”

3. “You shouldn’t travel or go on a vacation.”

When you travel during the seventh month, there are chances of you getting bad luck.”

4. Avoid standing near water bodies.

“Walking near water bodies might allow the vengeful spirit to drag you into the water replacing them.”

5. Do not pick up strange things from the floor.

“Even if you find money, try not to pick it up during the seventh month as it might belong to a ghost.”

6. “Do not look behind at night.”

If you feel a sudden coldness, there might be a ghost behind you so stay calm and walk ahead.”

7. If you think someone is calling your name, do not respond, turn or look behind.

“The Chinese believe that there are two torches of light on your shoulders,” the TikTok user explained. “So when you turn back, there will be an imbalance of Yin and Yang allowing the ghost to attack you. And when you answer them and they call their name, you are actually giving them permission to enter your body.”

8. Avoid getting “bangs” during this time of the year.

“Chi energy, otherwise known as life energy is concentrated on your forehead,” said @devilwearsbrata. “So when you get bangs, you are actually blocking the chi energy, allowing ghosts to enter your body easily.”

9. Do not wear heels at night.

“By wearing heels, you are actually being elevated from the ground, allowing ghosts from the underworld to attack you,” she explained.

10. “Do not shave or cut your hair during the seventh month.”

The Chinese believe that every strand of hair protects you from ghosts, so when you cut your hair or shave your hair, you’re actually decreasing your chance of protection from ghosts.”

Singapore U22 football team prepare for AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers with centralised training in Thailand

SINGAPORE — In preparation for the upcoming AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 qualifiers in September, the Singapore Under-22 men’s national football team, led by head coach Nazri Nasir, will undergo centralised training in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Young Lions, with a squad of 26 players, are scheduled to play three friendly matches – against North Bangkok University on Aug 25, Bangkok United four days later, and the Thailand U23 team on Sep 1.

This will be Singapore U22 football team’s first outing since their disappointing performance at the 2023 SEA Games in May.

Following a thorough review after the SEA Games, it was recommended that the team prioritise two key tournaments: the SEA Games and the AFC U23 tournament, which also acts as a qualifier for the Olympic tournament.

Notably, Singapore did not send a team to the ongoing AFF U23 Championships in Thailand and has decided against participating in the Asian Games scheduled for September in Hangzhou, China.

Singapore ended the SEA Games at the bottom of Group B with only a point. They suffered 3-1 losses to Thailand and Vietnam in their first two matches, and were held to a goalless draw by Laos. The Young Lions were handed a 7-0 thrashing by Causeway rivals Malaysia in their final group match.

Putting the SEA Games behind him, head coach Nazri shared his confidence in the players he has selected, citing the passion and commitment levels during the league matches he observed.

“I have been following the progress of these boys in the Singapore Premier League and especially in the Centre of Excellence Under-21 League, and I believe that I have chosen the best available squad for the upcoming training camp as well as the AFC tournament,” shared head coach Nazri, who took over from Philippe Aw after the 2023 SEA Games.

“Being prepared is the key to doing well in anything that we try. We achieve success by planning carefully, working hard, and staying committed. The upcoming training camp will give our players a chance to face different types of opponents and use the skills they have been working hard on during training. It would also allow me to see how the team shapes up as we prepare to get into competition mode in Hanoi,” explained Nazri.

Out of the 26 players initially selected, three will be dropped. A final list of 23 players will be announced after the Singapore U22 end their centralised training in Thailand. Young Lions dominated the squad with 16 players, while Lion City Sailors are represented by five players in the team: Bill Mamadou, Kieran Aryan, Nur Adam Abdullah, Nur Muhammad Asis, and Abdul Rasaq.

Singapore has been placed in Group C for the AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers, and all matches will be held in Vietnam. The Young Lions will kick off their campaign against Yemen on Sep 6, followed by Guam three days later. Their final qualifying match will be against the hosts, Vietnam, on Sep 12.

The group winner will automatically qualify for the next round. The second-placed team in Group C will advance to the main tournament if they are among the top four runner-up teams in the qualifiers. The AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024 will be held in Qatar from April 15 to May 3.

At the previous qualifiers for the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2022, Singapore were held to a 2-2 draw by Timor Leste in their opening Group H match played at the Jalan Besar Stadium in 2021. The Young Lions went on to win 1-0 against the Philippines in their next game before they were defeated 3-0 by South Korea in the final match. They ended the qualifiers in second place with four points and failed to qualify for the main tournament.

Police confirm bomb threats at 18 locations around Singapore were part of a hoax

Lianhe Zaobao

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has confirmed that bomb threats were made to 18 locations – ranging from Government buildings and embassies to other prominent locations – islandwide on Wednesday morning (August 23).

The police were alerted to the threats around 9.10 am. The Environment Building was evacuated and put under lockdown in the morning after the National Environment Agency (NEA) and Public Utilities Board (PUB) received a bomb threat related to the government building.

The police worked with the security officers at each of the 18 locations to carry out security checks and found no items of security concern. The police have said that security officers or Auxiliary Police Officers (APOs) have the training required to search for and handle suspicious items.

Revealing that the threats were part of a hoax, an SPF spokesperson said: “The police are aware that similar reports of email bomb threats sent seemingly by the same person had been received by the Republic of Korea recently, which had turned out to be a hoax.”

SPF takes all security threats seriously. The police added that they will not hesitate to take action against those who deliberately spread falsehoods on bomb threats.

Members of the public are advised to stay vigilant and report any individuals or objects arousing suspicion. This includes packages displaying stains, wires, or unusual odours.

The alleged bomb threats made yesterday are in violation of Section 268A of the Penal Code 1871. Those found guilty could face a maximum prison sentence of seven years, a fine of up to S$50,000, or both.

IMDA removed the most important parts of my broadcast speech: Tan Kin Lian

Tan Kin Lian Claims IMDA Edited Key Sections of His Broadcast Speech
YT screencapture

SINGAPORE: Presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian has revealed that the InfoComm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has removed three statements from a speech by him on the grounds that the president does not have the power to make such promises.

He made those statements in a speech that is set to be broadcast on television and online today (August 24).

In a press statement released early this morning (24 Aug), Mr Tan Kin Lian revealed that IMDA has removed the following three remarks he had made during the taping of his speech:

  1. “I will highlight this overall investment strategy (i.e. to invest the reserves soundly) to the professional investment managers to achieve the desired results”;
  2. “The actual monitoring will be the duty of the board of directors, but they will receive my advice and guidance on the approach to be taken”; and
  3. “Beyond these constitutional duties, I have a vision – to use the president’s office to influence policies that will make a better life for the people of Singapore. I will focus on three fundamental areas, crucial to the well-being of our citizens: bringing down the cost of living, ensuring affordable housing for all, and securing jobs that provide a sense of stability and a path to progress.”

In his press statement, Mr Tan Kin Lian argued, “I considered these statements to be the most important parts of my speech and that IMDA did not have the authority to interpret the constitution in a narrow way and asked for these statements to be removed. I did not have the time to argue about the removal of these paragraphs. I will bring it up to IMDA separately.”

The former NTUC Income chief, who called it fate that he is contesting the looming election as the qualifying criteria were somehow expanded to include him, added:

“Some people suggested that I was misleading the people by promising them goals that I did not have the executive authority to deliver. I am not misleading the people. I had made it clear, in many statements, that I would be using the office of the president to convey to the government about the hardships faced by the people and about their aspirations.”

Mr Tan Kin Lian promised to first advise the Prime Minister against the Goods and Services Tax (GST) hike planned for 2024 if he is elected.

He said, “I know that the government had already announced that they are going ahead with the increase. I (would) advise them to reconsider. I am not being political. I am expressing the view of a large segment of the people. Their voices should not be ignored.”

Pledging to bring up his views in private conversations with the Government leaders, he added: “I remain hopeful that I would be able to persuade the prime minister and ministers to modify some of their existing policies that will give a better life for the people.”

‘The concept of money doesn’t exist on holiday’ says Singaporean who spent a fortune in Europe on designer accessories for herself and her dogs

SINGAPORE: The rich may not be like all of us, but some of us may enjoy watching them burn their money. This would explain the popularity of TikTok user Chloe L, who describes herself as a “stay-at-home daughter” who loves to shop for luxury items for herself and her poodles.

For example, in one video from earlier this month, Chloe says she “went a little crazy with the shopping” that day “because the concept of money doesn’t exist on holiday.”

As part of the family’s vacation across several European cities, she was in Italy that day. She shopped at Prada, Gucci, and Miu Miu before calling it a day because “I was pretty tired.”

The video has since racked up over half a million views.

Chloe regularly features her hauls of luxury handbags, designer clothes, jewellery, shoes, and the skincare products she uses.

The 20-year-old also buys accessories for her poodles, Lola and Matilda, saying in one video that she wanted a sparkly halter from Prada, but her dog’s size was unavailable.

Nevertheless, her pups received a bunch of new stuff from the Europe tour, as seen from Chloe’s designer dog accessory try-on haul here.

Her pooches received Gucci monogrammed leashes and crystal harness sets in a video that generated much interest, as evidenced by the almost 90,000 views it received.

However, not all commenters have been kind, as some have been critical of her spending habits.

Others appear to question the luxurious gifts for her dogs.
