The Malaysian Government announced that Singapore-registered cars entering Malaysia have to pay a road levy of RM20 (S$6.60) per car from today (1 Nov). The Transport Ministry deems the levy as discriminatory against Singapore vehicles as it only applied at land checkpoint with Singapore. A statement from the Ministry said that it will respond in kind, matching the new levy towards Malaysian registered vehicles, and that more details will follow soon.

From today, those travelling to Johor via the two land checkpoints in Woodlands and Tuas will have to tap their stored-value Touch n’ Go cards twice after getting their passports stamped, once for the road charge and again for the checkpoint toll. There are two separate payment terminals at each counter for both charges, with signs indicating what each terminal is for.

The new charge is on top of existing checkpoint tolls levied by both Malaysia and Singapore, which is about $13 for a round trip for a Singapore car going into Johor.

Government and commercial vehicles, motorcycles and public transportation will be exempted from the levy.
