US pop star Beyonce and Hong Kong’s Cantopop singer Jacky Cheung are collaborating in a duet for the first time for the new Lion King movie.
The Disney live-action remake premiered in Chinese cinemas last Saturday with Beyonce’s voice acting as lion queen Nala and partnering with Cheung for the theme song ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight?’
Fans of Cheung and Beyonce in China and Hong Kong are calling this duet the “collaboration of the century.”
Early this year, Beyonce and US singer Donald Glover performed the official American version of ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight?’ Glover plays Simba the lead character in Lion King.
The song was released in 1994 and it won Best Original Song at the Oscars and Golden Globe Awards that year.
British singer Sir Elton John who wrote and composed the song won Best Male Pop Vocal Performer at the Grammy Awards.
The live-action remake of The Lion King is a photorealistic computer-animated musical drama directed and produced by Jon Favreau and it also features the voices of Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor and James Earl Jones.
The Lion King was originally released in 1994 with traditional animation and music written and composed by John and Tim Rice.
In the original fim, the song was performed by Kristle Edwards and in another version, it was performed by Sir Elton John.
The movie is about a young lion named Simba who will succeed his father Mufasa as King of the Pride Lands.
His paternal uncle Scar murders Mufasa and Simba is manipulated into thinking he was responsible and flees to exile.
Growing up in exile Simba uncovers the truth of his past from his father’s baboon friend Rafiki and childhood sweetheart Nala and returns to challenge Scar to take his place as the rightful King.
The Lion King fetched 270 million Hong Kong Dollars (47 million SGD) in Hong Kong in just two days.
