Elderly couple struggle to comply with measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19

0

Singapore — An elderly man has called on the authorities to consider the plight of people with breathing and mobility difficulties and who, therefore, find it difficult to comply with Covid-19 safety measures.

On Friday (Dec 4), Facebook user Toh Thiam Hock highlighted this issue on the Complaint Singapore page. The 71-year-old suffered a stroke about two years ago. He found it difficult to breathe with a face mask. He said that he was living with his wife, who was also 71 and had mobility issues.

“My doctor from the polyclinic gave me a medical memo to excuse the wearing of face mask by wearing a face shield instead,” he said. “But the bus captain does not allow me to board the bus without a face mask.”

Furthermore, all the barriers established to enforce safe distancing around wet markets and supermarket have made it challenging for the couple. The barriers “mean we have to walk an extra distance to enter and exit the places”.

“We have no complaints if we have no breathing or walking difficulties to follow the rules,” said Mr Toh. He asked if the authorities could look into the matter to make lives less difficult for those with breathing and walking difficulties as they have to struggle each day to stay alive.

He called for “some mercy” when the authorities enforce rules for the majority. He urged them to tell their enforcement officers, and bus captains, that the wearing of a face shield is acceptable for people with a doctor’s memo.

As for safe distancing measures, he said: “Every step shorter is a blessing to those with breathing and walking difficulties.”

A few cases have been highlighted in the media previously about people not wearing masks for the same reason. When reminded by passers-by to put them on, the individuals said they found it difficult to breathe when they put on the masks.

In the comments section, Mr Toh received advice on how he could deal with the situation. Some people asked him who he had voted for and whether he had sought help from his Member of Parliament. /TISG

Mrs Jamus Lim helps keep a close eye on Anchorvale ward of Sengkang GRC

Singapore — Workers’ Party MP Jamus Lim was accompanied by his wife and young daughter during a walkabout in his Anchorvale ward of Sengkang GRC on Saturday (Dec 5).

In an Instagram post, Associate Professor Lim highlighted his wife’s work experience and how she had a keen eye for things that needed more attention in the estate.

He said: “Today, I had unusual company on my weekend estate walk. Since we were together at our prior appointment, my wife and daughter accompanied me for my rounds around the 355/6 Anchorvale cluster.

“As it turns out, my wife used to do site inspections when she was in the Peace Corps in Bolivia, and she has a keen eye for things that look awry.”

Their daughter, who is just over a year old, appeared to enjoy being out and about with mummy and daddy.

A/Prof oted: “My daughter, in contrast, was mainly entertained by being out and about in a new space, and making her usual baby gurgling and cooing noises. So in addition to a little family time, they also got a glimpse of what keeps me busy on weekends!”

Although A/Prof Lim likes to keep his personal life private, he has publicly shared his love for his young family on several occasions.

During the General Election this year, he said that all that he was doing was for his baby girl. On the day he was sworn in as an MP, he said that he was able to do what he did  because he had his wife’s “mental, emotional, and physical support”.

In a tribute to his wife, whom he has been with for a decade, he added: “I am reminded, daily, of her unassuming and tireless sacrifices she makes so that I may serve the people of Anchorvale and Singapore, and I hope I have likewise been a bulwark for her as she pursues her dreams.” /TISG

Can sworn enemies Umno and DAP work together? Kadir Jasin says if Dr M could, anyone can

0

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 6 — To Datuk Kadir A. Jasin, the former press secretary and a close ally of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, life-long rivals Umno and the DAP could very well forge a political alliance to rule Perak – a feat many think to be impossible.

Kadir cited Dr Mahathir as proof to support his argument against the impossible.

The veteran newsman said the two-time former prime minister had joined forces with DAP, PKR and Amanah to overthrow Barisan Nasional in the 2018 general elections, noting their partnership had lasted till February this year.

Kadir suggested that with Umno keen to retake leadership of the Perak government, teaming up with DAP would be the most pragmatic approach since MIC and MCA, the two non-Malay partners in Barisan Nasional (BN) were unable to draw support from the minority communities.

“BN is comatosed. MCA and MIC can no longer draw non-Malay support. The Chinese vote is monopolised by the DAP.

“It’s not surprising then that the DAP, having tasted power through Pakatan Harapan, has aspirations to return to Putrajaya through a new pact that may include Umno,” Kadir wrote on his Facebook page today.

“If Dr Mahathir Mohamad can work with the DAP, PKR, and Amanah to topple BN, can Umno not think of the same method?” he added.

Kadir claimed he had prior knowledge about the plan to overthrow Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, having been tipped off by a person purportedly close to Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a move that caught even senior party leaders off guard, Umno joined forces with its sworn enemy to hand a no-confidence vote that ended Ahmad Faizal’s tenure, abetted by PKR and Amanah.

Kadir suggested he was initially sceptical about the information but was later persuaded to change his mind after receiving text messages from more sources, including who he claimed to be a DAP central working committee member.

“By 6.15pm I received a Whatsapp text from a central working committee member: “PKR sources told me the DAP has agreed to work with Umno in the coming general election. I’m flabbergasted”,” he wrote.

Shortly after, Kadir said a Hong Kong-based fund manager had texted him about the same matter.

“6.42pm a fund manager of Chinese descent who is based in Hong Kong Whatsapp (me): “Umno DAP working together. Dreamteam finally coming together”,” he wrote.

The Perak legislative assembly has 59 seats. Umno controls the lion’s share at 25 followed by the DAP, at 16. Together with PKR and Amanah, PH has 24 seats.

Ahmad Faizal’s Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia only has five seats. Umno leaders have used the party’s minority status to justify a takeover.

PAS, with just three seats, have said it would stay out of the new government. The remaining two seats are held by Gerakan and an independent.

Perak state lawmakers voted against the menteri besar on Friday. Ahmad Faizal subsequently announced his resignation on Saturday.

M-cyclist speeds over double white lines and crashes into another rider

0

Singapore — A motorcyclist is shown speeding across double white lines and crashing into an oncoming rider in video footage that is circulating online.

On Friday (Dec 4), Facebook page ROADS.sg uploaded video footage of the incident from a vehicle’s dashcam. According to the post, the accident happened the previous night along South Buona Vista Road.

“Ignoring double white lines and slams into another rider in the opposite side,” read the caption. The post also highlighted that there was a 40 kph speed limit on the road.

The motorcyclist can be seen overtaking the vehicle which captured the incident on its dashcam. In doing so, he crosses the double white lines and into the opposite lane and crashes into an oncoming motorcycle. Both riders fall onto the road.

“South Buona Vista Road is a road with many steep turns and slopes. Double white lines cover more than 50 per cent of this stretch of road,” added ROADS.sg in a post of a similar incident that happened in April 2018.

Those commenting on the post called on the authorities to take the rider to task so that others are not injured in the future. “This reckless biker should be penalised for causing injury to the other biker and should have his licence suspended,” said Facebook user Cai Chen.

“I’ve been using this road for close to 10 years and seen so many accidents,” commented Facebook user Michael De Souza. “People don’t seem to bother that double white lines mean no overtaking. Traffic Police should install cameras along this road,” he added.

“I’m a biker, but this is really a case where ambition outweighs skill,” commented Facebook user Wahid Ooi Abdullah.”

Ex-GIC chief economist endorses Workers’ Party politician’s biography

Former Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) chief economist Yeoh Lam Keong is among a group of well-known Singaporeans who have endorsed Workers’ Party (WP) member Yee Jenn Jong’s new book, Journey In Blue, which is scheduled for release next month.

The book looks at the WP through Mr Yee’s eyes and aims to provide readers with a better understanding of the nature of work opposition politicians in Singapore take on.

On Friday (4 Dec), Mr Yee said that fifteen individuals read and endorsed his book, including Mr Yeoh. The prominent economist had showered praise on Mr Yee and called his book “a gem of a political biography.”

Opining that the book is “delightfully well-written with a simple, modest, yet penetratingly pithy and hard-hitting candour,” Mr Yeoh said: “It tells the inside stories of Jenn Jong’s political career with the Workers’ Party over the last 10 years and three general elections.

“Both the author’s and the WP’s experiences are covered including key successes and failures, the historical euphoria of the first opposition victory deposing two PAP ministers in Aljunied GRC in 2011, the travails of AIM and AHPETC, dark days post-2015, the WP’s controversial yet distinctly successful leadership transition, and finally its hard-won electoral vindication in GE2020.”

Mr Yeoh said that Mr Yee’s humble yet incisive analysis, remarkable entrepreneurial ability, steadfast bipartisanship, and pragmatic objectivity shone through as he took readers through his political journey.

Explaining that the book will shed light on what makes the WP so prominent, Mr Yeoh said: “This gives the reader a clear-eyed, yet first-hand insight into the hardships and resolute behaviour under fire of the home-grown, deeply grassroots connected political leadership and values that have made, and will continue to make, the WP such a formidable opposition party.”

He added: “This volume is a finely detailed and hard-nosed account of the real political struggles undergone by Jenn Jong, WP veterans, and the promising volunteers-turned-politicians who in the end and in spite of all odds, rose to the occasion to create a more democratic polity.

“And in the course of their trial by fire, one can discern the motivation and mettle worthy of leading a future government of Singapore.”

Former ruling party parliamentarians Inderjit Singh and Teo Ser Luck also endorsed Mr Yee’s book. Prof Singh acknowledged the challenges opposition politicians face and commented that being critical of policies is not equivalent to being disloyal to Singapore, in his endorsement. He also called Mr Yee a politician Singaporeans should know about.

Mr Teo said that Mr Yee’s book provided a learning opportunity and highlighted the value of listening to different perspectives.

Others who endorsed the book include WP chief and Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh, former Permanent Secretary (Education and Community Development) Er Kwong Wah, and former Nominated MP Faizah Jamal.

Academic Kenneth Paul Tan also went through Mr Yee’s draft and wrote the foreword to the book. Read an excerpt from Prof Tan’s foreword here:

“…And that is one reason why I welcome Yee Jenn Jong’s book, which promises a peek into a party whose every move is calculated and calibrated. But it delivers more than just a peek.
“Jenn Jong’s account of what he saw and what he did over his decade-long involvement in the party, particularly the five years when he served as a non-constituency member of parliament (NCMP), opens the reader’s eyes not only to the backstage of political theatre, but also to the on-stage stories and myths that both attract public fascination for current affairs and politics, as well as degrade the ideals of democracy to crude notions of disloyalty to Singapore when considering the meaning of opposition and opposition-supporters. The book helpfully seeks to dispel many such myths that have arrested Singapore’s political development.
“Jenn Jong candidly shares some very revealing impressions he has had of many key figures in the WP leadership as well as his parliamentary and constituency colleagues. Along with rich descriptions of the mechanics and dynamics of opposition-party life, these impressions form a valuable collection of character sketches that may help explain the reasons and motivations behind what have sometimes seemed rather surprising, and at other times even frustrating, turns of events….”

Journey in Blue is currently being printed and is expected to hit bookstores in a few weeks. Mr Yee is accepting pre-launch orders with a discount on the sale price and free shipping. Pre-launch orders can be made through his website. /TISG

Kenny Bee hosts star-studded poker game for Alan Tam, Jordan Chan and Charmaine Sheh

Lately, a lot of Hong Kong celebrities relocated to China to further their careers. In the past, it was common for them to commute between Hong Kong and whichever Chinese city they are working in, but since the COVID-19 pandemic started, travel restrictions have led them to move to China for the long term.

On December 2, Alan Tam who recently was condemned for performing on a Chinese live streamer’s broadcast (apparently because it’s degrading for a star of his status), posted a collection of photos of him at what appeared to be a poker night at his friend Kenny Bee’s Shanghai home. Fellow celebrities Charmaine Sheh was there as well, including Jordan Chan and wife Cherrie Ying, all of whom have been living in China for some time now.

Judging from the photos, the gang looked to be having a good time. At the gathering, they had wine, played poker and had a jamming session. There was also a tea appreciation session. Observant netizens pointed out that everyone looked happy, especially Kenny.

The 67-year-old veteran singer, who is now competing in singing show Our Song along with Coco Lee, Joey Yung and Jordan, was beaming from ear to ear in the photos.

As for Jordan, who now has a moustache, made him look much older than his 53 years according to netizens. They commented that he looks about the same age as Kenny and Alan who is 70. Netizens also commented on Kenny’s apartment saying that it is furnished nicely but is on the small side. That is not surprising as real estate in Shanghai is not cheap.

Born on May 28 1975, Charmaine Sheh Sze-man is a Hong Kong actress.

She is best known for her roles in Return of the Cuckoo (2000), Maidens’ Vow (2006), Can’t Buy Me Love (2010), When Heaven Burns (2011), Line Walker (2014), and Story of Yanxi Palace (2018). After winning second runner-up in the 1997 Miss Hong Kong pageant, she debuted as an actress in 1998 and has since won many accolades, including 10 TVB Anniversary Awards. /TISG

AfA Red Ribbon Awards are awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions over the years towards raising public awareness of HIV/AIDS in Singapore and its attendant issues.

Kim Kardashian spent millions on her family’s Christmas gifts

0

Reality star Kim Kardashian is reportedly set to splurge a chunk of her multimillion-dollar fortune on her husband Kanye West and her four children this Christmas.

She is planning to make it a year to remember and an insider close to Kim revealed that the mum of four plans to go all out by spending lavishly on her loved ones.

Even though everyone is going through tough times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with many losing their jobs and income, Kim and Kanye continue to flaunt their wealth as they are planning to buy top of the range products for their kids.

North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm will wake up on Christmas day to extravagant jewellery, electric cars, and other goodies as their parents are reportedly set to spoil them rotten.

The source close to Kimye told heat: “They’re going all out with the kids’ stockings this year – jewellery and couture worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“They’ll be getting ponies and electric cars, custom-made watches and all the latest must-have toys.”

On top of this, Kim’s fortunate husband is reportedly thinking about getting the star her own private island as a gift for Christmas.

“Kanye’s looking to buy Kim her own private island and she’s got a string of properties and other surprises lined up for him – plus they’re paying for the bulk of the Kardashian family Christmas party. They’ve each told their personal assistants to make this their top priority.”

Kim and Kanye are also hoping to spoil the rest of the family with “fancy cars and luxury holidays”.

This is following after Kim received backlash in October after she decided to fly her “closest inner circle” out to a secluded island to celebrate her 40th birthday.

Fans of the Kardashian sister branded her as “out of touch” and “tone-deaf” as the famous family “pretended things were normal just for a brief time” amid the crisis, despite the US having one of the worst coronavirus records in the world.

But it appears the criticism has only urged Kim to continue splurging money as she will reportedly give her staff a “big bonus cheque, a hamper of goodies worth $10k (SGD13k), Botox vouchers, Champagne and caviar”.

The source added that the showbiz couple are aware people think they are distasteful, but in their defence “believe they do plenty of work for good causes all year round” and want to spend their cash on spoiling family members. /TISG
