Man gets ‘shock of his life’ after being charged $10.80 for cai fan at Food Republic

SINGAPORE: A man took to social media when his plate of economy rice (cai fan) cost a surprising $10.80.

Facebook user Jason Joo wrote that the price of the dish, which is, after all, supposed to be economical, gave him “the shock of his life”.

“You think it’s worth it? Too late after being selected and on the plate, have to accept and pay. Will not return again,” he wrote on the Complaint Singapore Facebook page in a post that’s since received many comments and shares.

He added that he had bought the meal at the Food Republic Food Court at City Square Mall.

When The Independent Singapore reached out to Mr Joo for comment, he responded to some of the commenters who had told him that the price of the dish was high because it included seafood.

“The dishes I selected were actually 2 choice of meat and 1 choice of veg with a few pieces of small shrimp. But many netizens who commented said it was seafood, which is untrue,” Mr Joo told us.

A netizen who did the math wrote that the dish was “not worth it.”

One commenter told him he shouldn’t be shocked as Singapore has become the “world’s most expensive city.”

Another observed, “He ordered the veg w prawns and he was charged seafood pricing. A lot of stalls these days charge like that. Order veg with some minced meat, charged meat price. Ordered tofu with minced pork, charged meat price. They should stop selling in such manner. Unethical.”

One called Food Republic an “atas foodcourt.”

“Now you know. I go food court won’t eat economy rice especially those in shopping mall. Normally eat better stuff. Economy rice is only I will buy at my usual stall or at coffeeshop,” agreed another.

“All MPs and Ministers once a week, they should come down to the bottom and pay from their own pocket,” a netizen suggested.

“I would suggest food operators to charge their food more reasonably. I’m not expecting them to take a loss but the category between veg and seafood should be more clear,” Mr Joo added to TISG.

We have also reached out to Food Republic. /TISG

‘This place does not deserve 1.8 stars’ — TikToker says after tasting $16 fried rice at the ‘worst-rated restaurant’ in Singapore

SINGAPORE: In a country of people unafraid to give their opinions on food, one TikTok user bravely set out to try Singapore’s “worst-rated restaurant” but came away saying he would add it to his favourites.

TikTok user @drigmo went over to the Forum Seafood Village Restaurant at Boat Quay to sample the dishes that have earned the eatery an average of 1.8 stars on Google. Trip Advisor and sethlui.com have also been less than friendly.

Surprisingly, however, drigmo appeared to enjoy the experience, and his TikTok video has gone viral, getting over 241,000 views since he posted it in mid-July.

He did admit, however, that his goal was to leave a “glowing review” for the restaurant, but added that he can’t lie about the experience.

drigmo first had the $16 Fried Rice with Diced Chicken, which he described as “smelling decent” with “fragrant rice and tender chicken,” and which he rated a 7 out of 10 with “no complaints.”

He then tried the $26 Sweet and Sour Chicken, which was “crispy.” The TikTok user said that the main complaint was the price point, which people have found expensive.

“Do I think it’s expensive? I got 20 pieces for $26, it’s definitely on the higher end,” he said, before giving the dish a 6.4 out of 10.

This was followed by six pieces of Chicken Satay, which cost $15. He liked the charred taste of the meat and the peanut sauce and gave it an 8 out of 10, though he noted that it was the most expensive satays he’s had.

His highest rate was 8.2 out of 10, which was given to the oysters. It was the first time for drigmo to try oysters, and he said they tasted fresh. They’re also $12 per piece.

His verdict: “Overall, this place does not deserve 1.8 stars. The food is decent, the view is great but the price is a bit on the high side.” /TISG

The black and white photo featured a 1967 photo of Orchard Road with National Day decorations. “The famous car park by day, supper spot by night is on the left of the pic and the Magnolia Snack / Milk Bar is on the right,” the post read. “Further down, we can also see the meeting of Emerald Hill Road and Orchard Road.”

One even remembered a time when the NDP was held in the morning. “I remembered having the NDP in the morning instead of the evening like nowadays,” the online user wrote. “There was at one point of time the NDP was held at night in 1994.”

SINGAPORE: Brain freeze or price shock? Maybe a little bit of both. A netizen recently took to an online news forum to share the shock of discovering that an ice cream cart charged S$3 a cup.

A netizen took to an online news forum on Sunday (Aug 13) to share a recent experience buying a cup of ice cream from an ice cream cart. “S$3 for a cup of mint ice cream,” the post read.

“This cup of mint ice cream is $3 from the ice cream cart…is this the market rate now or? I was pretty shocked,” shared the netizen. “Uncle said it’s been this price for a long time. And no, there was no pricing shown and I didn’t “cancel” my order after hearing the price cause I just figured I wouldn’t buy from here again.”

Many online users responded quickly, saying that the customer was scammed.

“Nope,” said one. “I had a cup of chocolate chip mint ice cream in July near the Helix bridge. I think it was $1.50 or $1.80.”

Others seemed to recognise the “signature move,” singling out an uncle somewhere in Tampines who reportedly charges way too much for ice cream.

“Ah.. the signature move of Tampines central ice cream cart uncle,” wrote one. “I kena once by him $3 cone.”

“You got scammed,” said another. “The average rate is $1.20 to $1.50

Others expressed how they think S$3 is just too much.

“$3 is too much,” said one. “Bought from a cart at one of the TPY MRT exits and it was only $1.50 if I remember correctly. Bang for your buck would be Mixue King Cone at only $1. Cheaper than Macs.”

‘I just feel worse with each passing day’ says NUS biz grad who’s been job hunting since January

0

SINGAPORE: A fresh graduate took to Reddit to crowdsource ideas for job hunting, saying he’s been looking for employment since the beginning of the year and is starting to feel hopeless.

u/Ill-Cry-825 wrote on r/askSingapore on Monday (Aug 14) that he graduated from NUS Business School last May. His credentials are pretty good: “I was a marketing & ops student, and I’ve done 3 marketing internships. I have leadership experience and I’ve taken various certs/courses.”

However, he still hasn’t gotten employed despite applying for jobs and consultations with career advisors in the last six months.

“My expected salary is 3k. I’ve applied to all sorts of industries and companies,” he wrote, adding, “I feel like my chances will plummet as more fresh grads enter the market, and the past 8 months of failures is something I can never get back. That’s the worst part – losing all this time. And I just feel worse with each passing day.”

He asked if he should be applying for internships and when the best time is to apply for work.

He added, “I already got rejected today but another company replied with ‘We will only move ahead with this role in Sep’ after I emailed them for an update after my interview. Does this mean they found all current applicants to be unsuitable?

Any help is appreciated. I’m at the end of my rope. I’ve been reading through the responses and slowly PMing people. I just feel so hopeless.”

Kind Reddit users offered him advice and encouragement, urging him to persevere as it can take a while to get a job.

Others shared job opportunities with him.

Some even asked for his resume so they could help out.

SINGAPORE: K Shanmugam was quick to shut down circulating rumours on Wednesday (Aug 16) night after an old blog post was shared claiming that he had an affair with fellow PAP MP.

Mr Shanmugam also said there was another post allegedly by his ex-wife Jothie Rajah, which was also false.

In a Facebook post, the Law and Home Affairs Minister wrote:

“[Alleged Affair with MP]
I have been told that an old post, fake news, is being recirculated – that I had an affair with an MP. False baseless allegations. Have asked my lawyers to look at it and am also considering other options”.

In a separate post, Mr Shanmugam wrote:

“[Alleged post by Jothie]
A person pretending to be my ex-wife Jothie, put up a nasty, false post, many years ago. Jothie didn’t write it and has told me that she didn’t write it. It was an imposter, making up the allegations. I had wanted to file a police report but eventually left it alone because the matter sort of died. I see that people are deliberately recirculating that post. This time I will file a police report.”

Tan Kin Lian says he and George Goh should discuss who will step down if both qualify for the Presidential Election, in order not to split the votes

Tan Kin Lian brushes off concerns over his FB posts about "pretty girls", says only ‘very small minority’ are bothered by them

SINGAPORE: Presidential hopeful Tan Kin Lian reiterated on Tuesday (Aug 15) that he and George Goh should discuss who will step down if both qualify for the Presidential Election to not split the votes among non-establishment candidates.

Mr. Tan Kin Lian first mooted the idea of discussing with Mr. Goh who would step down if both qualify during the launch of his presidential bid last Friday (Aug 11). However, businessman George Goh said on Monday evening (Aug 14) that he has no agreement with Mr. Tan for one to step down if both qualify for the Presidential Election.

Speaking to reporters at a walkabout in Jurong West, the former NTUC Income chief executive said he still expects either he or Mr Goh to qualify.

“If he qualifies, I will give him my full support because I believe it’s important we should have an independent candidate. But if I qualify and he doesn’t, I hope he will reciprocate,” Mr Tan added.

“If both of us qualify, I still think it is a good idea that we should discuss who should step down because it’s not good to have a split vote among those who want to have an independent president.”

Mr. Goh said about Mr. Tan’s suggestion: “I don’t think this should be the way.”

Every candidate who comes forward “must be genuine”, Mr. Goh told reporters after a dialogue session with a group of youths at Bisoux cafe.

“If you decide to come forward, you put your plan, you put your campaign, you put all effort into it, then people will know you genuinely want to serve the nation. I think all candidates should have the same attitude,” he said.

He said last Saturday that he had paid his election deposit of S$40,500 and has “no doubt” that he will be able to keep it this time. /TISG

Calvin Cheng predicts a two-horse Presidential race — Tharman and Tan Kin Lian

SINGAPORE: Calvin Cheng took to social media over the weekend (Aug 12), predicting that the Presidential Election will end up being a two-horse Presidential race between Tan Kin Lian and Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

Four people have declared their intention to run. Former Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, businessman George Goh, former GIC chief investment officer Ng Kok Song, and former presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian have thrown their names into the hat.

Former Nominated MP Calvin Cheng wrote: “In my opinion, of the 3 private sector candidates, Tan Kin Lian has the best chance of qualifying”.

He explained: “This is because in 2011, the PEC said “The Committee is of the opinion that the organization (NTUC Income) is comparable in size and complexity to a company with a paid-up capital of S$100 million.” It’s not a huge leap of logic to ascertain that NTUC Income (which TKL says had 17 billion in assets) is comparable to a company with 500m shareholder equity”.

Mr. Cheng added that Mr. Goh has a harder path. He added that Mr. Goh’s lawyers “have put together a very strong argument that several companies with combined shareholder equity of more than 500m are equivalent to one company with more than 500m. The PEC may not agree. However, I hope the PEC will consider that George Goh was not merely a hired gun, but the entrepreneur who built these companies from scratch”.

With regards to Mr. Ng, Mr. Cheng added that he has “an even harder path”. While his role as Chief Investment Officer of GIC is an important one, “Mr. Ng has to prove that his role is as complex and important as a CEO of a 500m equity company. This is not easy”, he added.

Mr. Cheng concluded that he believed the Presidential Election would be between Mr Shanmugaratnam and Mr Tan.

Polling Day for Singapore’s Presidential Election will be on Friday, Sep 1, if more than one candidate qualifies to run for the post.

Nomination Day is set for Aug 22.

Applications to run in the Presidential Election opened on Jun 13.

To be nominated as a candidate, the person must deliver his nomination paper, along with the Certificate of Eligibility, the Community Certificate, and the Political Donation Certificate.

Applications for the Certificate of Eligibility and the Community Certificate will close on Aug 17.

Each candidate must pay a deposit of S$40,500. This can be done before Nomination Day.

Nomination proceedings will occur at the People’s Association auditorium at King George’s Avenue between 11 am and 12 pm on Aug 22.

The returning officer is Mr. Tan Meng Dui, chief executive officer of the Housing and Development Board.

If there is a contest, Polling Day on Sep 1 will be a public holiday. /TISG
