Man locks 9 ex-colleagues in office because he got fired

SINGAPORE: A man who padlocked the main door of an office for an hour after getting the boot received a S$4,000 fine on Aug 7 (Monday).

After his ex-colleagues discovered they had been locked into their office building, the business owner had a locksmith remove the padlock and then filed a police report against Vict Lim Siong Hock, now 52. CNA reported that he had worked as a driver and logistics assistant for the company but was fired before his probation period was over.

He entered a guilty plea to one count of wrongful confinement. However, another charge of sending an abusive message to a former co-worker was also taken into consideration in his sentencing. On the charge of wrongful confinement, Lim could have ended up in jail for up to three years, been made to pay a fine, or both.

On Jul 1, 2022, Lim started working at an electronics firm at Pantech Business Hub. However, the company let go of him on Aug 30, 2022, whilst he was still on probation.

The court heard that because he had been fired, he took a padlock he had bought from a hardware store and locked the office’s front door. This action was caught on CCTV cameras.

He claimed to have thought that the employees were out to lunch and that “probably all of them” were not in the office. But the prosecutor argued that since lunch breaks were staggered, someone was at the office during working hours.

Lim placed the padlock on the entrance door of the office on Sep 1, 2022, at around 2:20 in the afternoon. Ten minutes later, when one employee tried to use the bathroom, he found that the office was locked from the outside.

After informing his colleagues who had also been trapped inside the office, they asked another colleague in another part of the building to check it out. This colleague confirmed that the padlock had been placed on the front door.

The business owner then called a locksmith to free the trapped workers, paying $80 for his services. /TISG

In Parliament: Gerald Giam asks about background checks for foreign nationals who open businesses in SG, cites Chinese crypto mogul sued by US SEC

SINGAPORE: In Parliament last month, Workers’ Party MP Gerald Giam (Aljunied GRC) brought up the issue of background checks for foreigners who want to start businesses in Singapore, an issue he also expressed concern about in 2014.

And in an Aug 8 Facebook post, Mr Giam noted that a Chinese national named Justin Sun, the founder of BitTorrent Foundation in Singapore, had been sued in March of this year by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) after allegations of selling and airdropping unregistered securities, fraud and market manipulation.

Mr Giam underlined that “Sun’s BitTorrent was registered in Singapore under the business activities of ‘IT and Computer Service Activities,’” which greatly differs from the offences his company allegedly committed, namely the fraudulent issuance and sale of crypto assets.

I am concerned that foreign nationals could take advantage of the ease of setting up companies in Singapore, so as to use Singapore as a base to boost their reputations and subsequently conduct fraudulent activities,” he added.

This is why he asked Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong in July for information on the types of background checks on foreign nationals before being allowed to set up companies in Singapore.

Mr Wong answered that foreign nationals based overseas are required to engage the services of an Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA)-Registered Filing Agent (RFA) for the setting up of Singapore companies.

These firms conduct customer due diligence, which includes verifying identity and background information, confirming the veracity and adequacy of documents and obtaining beneficial ownership information.

They also monitor the company’s business activities and report suspicious transactions to the Police.

“ACRA also makes publicly available much of the information lodged by companies. This helps to ensure that members of the public accessing this information can report any discrepancies to ACRA,” added the DPM.

Mr Wong’s full answer may be read here. /TISG

Gerald Giam: We will continue to stand with you and be your voices in Parliament. Will you join our journey despite these setbacks?

SINGAPORE: A foreign domestic helper took to social media asking for help after loansharks purportedly sent her money she did not ask for and demanded she pay it back with interest.

In an anonymous post to a support group on social media for foreign domestic helpers and employers alike, the maid wrote that she saw an advertisement on TikTok for loans. She followed the account and reached out to them via WhatsApp Messenger. She said she needed some cash, so she spoke to an agent and gave them her details and her employer’s address and contact number. However, she added that she was still undecided on whether to take a loan and only wanted to see if she could manage the interest rate and amount.

The helper then added that she did not feel good about what they were telling her “so I stop and block this #, and thats the start of my problem now they message me on whatsapp w another # saying I want trouble is it? 300$ for block fee + cancel fee.. so i leave it and block this # again , suddenly my singtel dash account notify me that I received some amount,, then another whatsapp # message me informing me they send amount like that need to pay for 4days w interest.. + the block fee and cancellation fee .. what did i do is I send back the amount that i received and block them”, she wrote.

She explained that without asking for a loan, she blocked the initial phone number, but they messaged her using another phone number. She claimed that without her consent, they sent money to her account, asking her to pay interest, a fee for blocking their number as well as a cancellation fee.

In other news, a frustrated employer took to social media complaining about her domestic helper who had been lying to them.

In an anonymous post to a Facebook group for both employers and helpers alike, the woman wrote: “My helper has been lying to us from day one of her contract”. She added that her maid was ending her contract early, which the family did not mind.

However, the employer wrote that her maid had been lying to them despite the family saving her from a loanshark once. “Now she tels us she already got an employer who is allowing her to stay out of registered premises from sat night to monday morning. Is there anyway where i can keep mom informed about her plans? Is there any way we can ban her?” the woman wrote, asking others in the group what the rules were.

Maid lied to employer about borrowing money from loanshark, she now wants to transfer to another family that allows her to stay out of registered premises on weekends

SINGAPORE: Newly-minted Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng will be stepping down from his role as Group CEO of NTUC Enterprise on Sept 30.

“I would have worked about 37 years since I graduated. Some 7 years were in the public and private sector but bulk of my career (almost 3 decades) is with the NTUC group. I treasure every experience in all these 37 years as I learnt many things and made many friends too,” wrote Mr Seah in a Facebook post on Tuesday morning (Aug 8), after saying that he had “decided to bring forward” his plans of stepping down.

Mr Seah, MP for Bradell Heights ward at Marine Parade GRC since 2006, served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament from 2011 to 2016.

In the wake of the July 17 resignation of former House Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin over an extramarital affair with fellow PAP parliamentarian Cheng Li Hui, Mr Seah was nominated by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and was sworn in on Aug 2.

NTUC Enterprise said in a statement on Aug 7 that Mr Seah’s resignation would “enable him to carry out his duties as Speaker with singular focus and commitment.”

It also announced Ms Adeline Sum, the current Deputy CEO, will be appointed to replace Mr Seah.

“The Board is also pleased to appoint Adeline as the successor with effect from 1 October this year. We are confident that she will continue to build upon NE’s success and guide the company to greater heights.

Adeline is an accomplished leader with a proven track record of success within NE and has played a key vital role in shaping the organisation’s future. She has more than three decades experience holding different portfolios across NTUC and NE.  With a deep understanding of the industry and keen dedication to our employees, customers, and stakeholders – she is in a strong position to take over the reins,” said Mr Lim Boon Heng, Chairman of NTUC Enterprise.

In his post, Mr Seah thanked his “bosses, colleagues and partners for their counsel, support and friendship all these years. I hope to do my best in my final chapter of my work journey.” /TISG

Meet “the most paikia (badass) kid in Singapore” — Neighbourhood “Garfield” cat goes viral on social media

SINGAPORE: A video of a neighbourhood cat sitting by a building, seemingly without a care in the world even as it was filmed up close, has gone viral on social media. The “chonky” feline’s stare won the hearts of many Singaporeans.

“The Most paikia (badass) kid in Singapore,” was the caption of a video that was shared with the Facebook group Singapore Incidents on Sunday (Aug 6). The one-minute and 16 seconds clip features a cat leaning against a wall, staring nonchalantly as the camera draws closer. The cat maintains its unbothered gaze almost directly at the videographer.

The video of the feline has garnered over 75,000 views on Facebook alone.

Many online users likened the cat to a famous comic strip character who is also a chubby and lovable feline.

Many others gushed about how adorable the cat was in the video. “What an amazing video that shows the pure innocence of a cute and wonderful cat that is sitting and wondering about his daily expenses & monthly bills,” said one.

Another said, “So cute…i find him, I bring him home.”

Others commented on the cat’s size, with one saying, “I love it, so cute…but you need to go on a diet, sweetie.”

“I wanna squish its face!” another shared.

One user saw another possible side to the sighting, hypothesising that the cat was abandoned. “He can be the cutest paikia but I’m sure there’s a sad story behind him living on the streets,” the netizen wrote. “This cutie had been abandoned for more than a year. Had seen him around our place. Myself found and adopted a female cutie most probably from the same family as they share the same chonky and cute face. I found my cutiepie wandering at the same location few years ago but unfortunately unable to take this paikia ahpui home.”

Another wished the cat well, saying, “Handsome boy. I hope he finds a loving home.”

Still, one online user shared why cats in Singapore are fortunate. “Cats in Singapore are the luckiest cats in the world because they can eat well even if they don’t have owners. Singaporeans are the best.”

WP National Day 2023 Message: In times of trouble, our country will find a way to start anew and overcome challenges

SINGAPORE: On Tuesday (Aug 8), Mr Pritam Singh, Secretary-General of The Workers’ Party and Leader of the Opposition, referenced the iconic song “Home” in this year’s National Day Message, even as he acknowledged the recent scandals that have beset the country.

“’Home’ resonates deeply with our yearning to be connected to our homeland, embrace precious memories from our past and ignite our dreams for our future. It remains loved by Singaporeans, who passionately sing along—and are often moved to tears—whenever it is played,” said Mr Singh, whose message may be summarized this way: “Making Singapore the Home we all cherish.”

He added that whilst Singapore “is experiencing a phase of deep introspection, driven partly by recent controversies,” the lyrics of “‘Home’ provide some comfort that, in times of trouble, our country will find a way to start anew and overcome these challenges.”

Performer Kit Chan recently rereleased the song as a 25th-anniversary remake.

Mr Singh added: “Just like how the remake of ‘Home’ comes at a time when Singapore and the world at large are at a different juncture from a quarter-century ago, our national policies also need to be re-examined to make them relevant to today’s Singapore.

Making Singapore the home we all cherish requires a revitalised focus on improving the lives and livelihoods of Singaporeans.”

He pledged that the WP would keep on contributing to this through its MPs and outlined several proposals that are part of the WP’s manifesto or that have been brought up in Parliament that have seen progress in both parliamentary discussions and government policies.

These include a proposal for an increase in the allowances for full-time National Servicemen due to higher living costs, engaging independent consultants to conduct educational credential assessments in hiring foreign professionals, more housing options for singles, anti-discrimination legislation to prohibit discrimination and robust medical care for Singaporean athletes—able-bodied or disabled.

“The Workers’ Party will continue to raise sensible proposals in Parliament that are in the best interest of Singapore, our Home, and continue to work with Singaporeans to build our dreams together. Outside of Parliament, we will continue to advocate for a fairer, more just, and kinder society, one that makes us proud to be Singaporeans, regardless of race, language or religion.

I wish all Singaporeans, both at home and overseas, a very Happy 58th National Day,” wrote Mr Singh.

Jamus Lim Expresses Dedication to Community, Pledging Attendance at Local Events in Sengkang GRC

SINGAPORE: In a recent Facebook post, Member of Parliament Jamus Lim shared his commitment to attending any events within Anchorvale and even in Sengkang GRC.

Mr Lim took to Facebook on Tuesday morning (Aug 8) to share snippets of his recent participation in a Singapore National Day community festival organised by residents of 321B Anchorvale and the non-profit organisation My Community.

“Over the weekend, I was delighted to have been invited by the residents of 321B Anchorvale, working in collaboration with My Community, to the launch of ‘Decorate My Sengkang, their SGNationalDay community festival,” Mr Lim wrote.

“The project decorates the lift lobby and void deck area of 321B, forming a celebratory gateway into the estate, when approaching from Kopitiam Square. The various red-and-white lanterns—and other Singapore-themed decorations—occupied many a night and weekend of the participating residents over the past month.

Apparently, the hardest part was getting the white and red bits to adhere, given their different material. But we get to enjoy the fruits of their effort. So swing by a take a look; it truly is a model (and an analogy) for both community- and nation-building.”

Mr Lim thanked the community for their invitation as well as their work. “Thanks to Li Yong, along with the others at My Community, for the invitation, and also for their ongoing efforts to foster ground-up collaboration among neighbors and residents islandwide,” he said. “And of course, thanks to Ms Jessie for the hard work in coordinating the decoration-making process!”

The MP for Sengkang GRC (Anchorvale) also shared his commitment to residents in a special postscript message: “Residents may wonder if it is appropriate to intrude on our schedules for events such as this. Rest assured, as long as there’s an event within Anchorvale (or even within SengkangGRC for that matter), regardless of whether it is large or small, we will always do my utmost best to attend.”
