SINGAPORE: In response to the closure of the iconic JCube, which held countless memories for Singaporeans, many took to social media to bid the landmark farewell.

“Farewell to JCube (2012-2023),” a netizen labelled a thread created in the Singapore Reddit group on Sunday (Aug 6).

JCube, an iconic shopping centre established in April 2012 held countless core memories of many Singaporeans. The site was also home to an Olympic-sized ice skating rink as well as to an IMAX theatre. The establishment’s last operating day was Sunday (Aug 6), days before the National Day Parade.

Netizens took to the Reddit post’s comments section to leave messages bidding farewell to JCube. A handful also shared their favourite memories on the memorable site.

“So sad,” wrote one. “Have my own memories with JCube but the spot itself evokes more nostalgia. Before JCube it used to be the Jurong Entertainment Centre with its Taco Bell, McDonald’s and also a cinema hall where I watched so many movies in the 90s & 2000s. It was during the time when the Popular was still around at the bottom of the MRT station.”

Another responded by saying, “Showing our age here. Jurong Entertainment Centre was my childhood. And the huge interchange with red bars on the ceiling. I only went to JCube a couple of times after I moved but its still sad to see it get (torn) down to build another condo.”

“RIP JCube,” wrote a third. “Thank you for your ice skating rink, stickies, Manhattan fish market, Teo Heng, cinema, your kinda weird Bugis Street-like 2nd floor. You were the ‘cool’ new mall to hang out at after my PSLE, thanks for the memories. RIP.”

“RIP JCube,” shared a fourth, “Thank you for the ice-skating rink that has created many enjoyable dates and memories.”

Still, a fifth wrote, “Pity. It always had this unique and different feel due mainly to the ice rink, and was a welcome sight compared to all the other samey samey malls.”
