Led by the party’s secretary-general Dr Chee Soon Juan, and chairman Prof. Paul Tambyah, the team in red visited areas where they contested in the 2020 general election. These areas included Yuhua, Bukit Batok, Bukit Panjang SMCs, Holland-Bukit Timah, and Marsiling-Yew Tee GRCs.

The party also visited Kampung Admiralty, which is located within Sembawang GRC. The last time the SDP contested in this constituency was in 2011. SINGAPORE: The Workers’ Party Youth Wing (WPYW) announced earlier this week that it will be launching its first-ever Fantasy Premier League (FPL) invitational competition, inviting “football fans of all ages” to participate in the fun.

One person who appears to be ready to jump in is WP chief Priam Singh, who shared the post from the WPYW on Thursday (Aug 10). Mr Singh, the Leader of the Opposition and a longtime Manchester United fan, wrote, “The Youth Wing folks have asked that I take part so, as Fabrizio Romano says, here we go!”

The WPYW wrote that some participants, including the top-performing managers, will receive “exclusive Workers’ Party branded goodie bags.”

And not only that, the best-performing managers in the fantasy league have the chance of winning a special prize at the end of the season.

What this prize will be is yet to be announced, WPYW added.

“FPL has been synonymous with the beautiful game for many years, creating an exciting weekly mini-game for fans to intensify their football-watching experience as well as engage in friendly rivalries with friends, family and colleagues.”

The fantasy league is free of charge and can be played from the convenience of your mobile phone.

Interested parties may join by clicking the link below to register an account. After that, you can start drafting your team!

The WPYW warned, however, against untoward behaviour, writing that “League administrators reserve the right to remove players with inappropriate/offensive team names.”

Mr Singh wrote, “Healthy, friendly competition is good and can unite Singaporeans in many ways. I will be joining the youth wing league with my team below. A pretty good starting eleven, don’t you think? #MUFC #RedDevils #WPYW”

40-year-old man says his daughter and girlfriend are the same age

SINGAPORE: A 40-year-old man took to social media asking for advice when his girlfriend and daughter ended up being of similar ages.

In an anonymous post to confessions page SGWhispers, the man said: “I am 40M and my girlfriend is 20F. All is well until I introduce her to my 17 years old daughter”.

He added that his daughter and girlfriend could not seem to get along and would always end up in arguments. “I love my girlfriend a lot. But my daughter is equally as important. I don’t know what to do”, he wrote.

Here’s what netizens who commented on the post said:

Earlier this year, a man dating a woman older than him ended up breaking up with her because he felt there was a big difference in how they showed love.

In an anonymous post to popular confessions page NUSWhispers, the man said that he was serving his National Service whereas she was working a flexible job. “We do love each other still, I do love her, i really do. But we always argue on how often I am spending time with her. I am pretty busy: with my own bills i need to pay, and I am someone who enjoys personal time, serving the country wtv,. To her, spending time = i love you, (quality time lover) but for me as long as she reassures me and makes me feel secure = i love you. (Words of affirmation)”, he wrote.

He added that she stayed in the East of Singapore while he stayed in the West and over time added that it took a toll on the relationship. He wrote that he eventually broke up with her despite still loving her. “My reason was being that we don’t perceive love the way we want it to be, i could be reassuring her and giving her words of affirmation but its not as well received as she just wants to spend time, something i don’t have at this point in my life”, he wrote, adding that him having to go to University soon also became a hurdle between them.

“I feel like Im doing the right thing by letting her go, and I didnt cut her off immediately, I am still talking to her and try to rationalise why I broke up with her , she still don’t seem to get why… and im trying to help her, or at least i think i am. I don’t want to cut her off because i do still care and love her, and I want her to take this break up easier, if that makes sense, where i can just be her support if needed”, he wrote.

Nearly one-fifth of new Covid-19 cases in Singapore due to new EG.5 Omicron sub-variant ‘Eris’

SINGAPORE: The new Omicron sub-variant responsible for rising cases in the United States, United Kingdom, China, and other parts of the world, EG.5, was detected in Singapore as early as May 5. The sub-variant is responsible for about 18 per cent of Covid-19 cases that were recently confirmed.

Nevertheless, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said earlier this week that there had been no significant uptick in deaths or even severity of symptoms due to the new sub-variant, nicknamed Eris, compared to other Covid-19 strains.

The number of Covid-19 cases requiring hospitalization or warding in intensive care units (ICUs) is staying stable, MOH told Yahoo Southeast Asia on Aug 11 (Fri).

However, the number of cases due to Eris is expected to grow, Prof Hsu Li Yang, the Vice Dean of Global Health of the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, told CNA, because the new variant has an immune escape.

Eris is “better able to evade the immune systems of those who had Covid in the past, or were vaccinated against Covid in the past,” he explained.

The EG.5 coronavirus strain is a spin-off of the Omicron strain discovered late in 2021. Eris has been found in South Korea, Japan, Canada, and other countries and is also spreading quickly in Ireland and France.

Furthermore, an offshoot of EG.5 with another mutation, termed EG.5.1, is spreading quickly in the US and England, where it is now responsible for 15 per cent of new Covid-19 cases.

On Wednesday, Aug 9, Eris was elevated by the World Health Organisation from being a “variant under monitoring” to a “variant of interest”, which indicates that the WHO believes it needs to be tracked and studied further.

But the WHO has said there is no cause to ring alarm bells, at least for now.

“Based on the available evidence, the public health risk posed by EG.5 is evaluated as low at the global level,” said the WHO.

While Eris has greater transmissibility than previous variants, the symptoms it causes do not appear to be more severe than other Omicron variants.

“We don’t detect a change in severity of EG.5 compared to other sublineages of Omicron that have been in circulation since late 2021,” said Dr Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead on Covid-19. /TISG

Tan Kin Lian launches second bid for presidency, aims to restore trust and hope

SINGAPORE — Former NTUC Income CEO Tan Kin Lian is making a second presidential bid after an unsuccessful contest in 2011. He launched his campaign on Friday, Aug 11, at the Copthorne King’s Hotel, accompanied by two prominent opposition figures – Tan Jee Say and Lim Tean – who were introduced as his proposer and seconder, respectively. Prabu Ramachandran, a People’s Voice party member, was named his principal election agent.

With the campaign slogan ‘Bring Back Trust, Give Us Hope,’ Tan intends to play an active role should he be given the mandate as the president.

“The president has to perform two key duties set out in the constitution. To safeguard our past reserves and to protect the integrity of our public service. If elected, I intend to perform these two key duties diligently, honestly, and to the best of my ability.”

Regarding the losses reported by Singapore’s sovereign wealth funds in recent years, Tan commented, “We should acknowledge that the market values of investments will fluctuate from year to year based on the underlying conditions of the global economy.”

He added that we should not judge the performance of the past years with the benefit of hindsight and with inadequate knowledge of the actual conditions that influence the investment decisions.

“I intend to ensure these lessons are properly identified and learnt so that we can make better policy and operating decisions in the future. The actual monitoring will be the duty of the board of directors, but they will receive my advice and guidance on the approach to be taken,” shared Tan.

The former NTUC Income CEO explained that he intends to work closely with the government to ensure that the past reserves are used wisely for the benefit of the current and future generations.

Tan Kin Lian’s proposer, Tan Jee Say, was a candidate in the 2011 President Election in a multi-corner contest. Tony Tan emerged as the eventual winner with a slim margin of 35.20%, over Dr Tan Cheng Bock’s 34.85%. Tan Jee Say garnered 25.04% of the votes, while Tan Kin Lian received 4.91%.

“He (Tan Kin Lian) will make a good president. For someone who lost his deposit in the 2011 presidential election, it definitely takes a lot of courage to place himself at the mercy of the voters to contest again. No matter what, I think we all can admit that courage is commendable,” expressed Tan Jee Say during the press conference.

Besides Tan Kin Lian, three others have expressed their intention to contest in the upcoming Presidential Election. They are former Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, ex-GIC chief investment officer Ng Kok Song, and entrepreneur George Goh.

In the 2017 Presidential Election, Presidential Halimah Yacob was elected unopposed as two aspiring candidates Farid Khan and Salleh Marican failed to obtain their certificate of eligibility.

SINGAPORE: Dr Kar Hao Teoh, a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon at Princess Alexandra Hospital in the UK, died by gunshot on Aug 3 in Cape Town, South Africa, when he took a wrong turn and ended up amid a violent strike by minibus taxi drivers.

He was shot in the head while in the vehicle with his wife, Sara, and their two-year-old son, Hugo, as well as one other person. Four other people were killed due to the strike that day.

Dr Teoh, 40, a British national, was born in Singapore and is said to have studied at Raffles Institution (RI) and Raffles Junior College (RJC), AsiaOne reports.

He was called an “award-winning British surgeon and “loving family man” by those who knew him, said The Guardian on Aug 10.

The piece quotes Dr Teoh’s colleagues at the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society as saying, “He was remembered by colleagues past and present as a kind, gentle person, a dedicated and talented surgeon and a rising star of the foot and ankle world who had already made a big impact in the British and European Foot and Ankle Societies. He has worked in Scotland, England and Wales and has left fond memories with people in all corners of the country.”

The surgeon had been awarded an international prize for his groundbreaking research into treating ankle fractures two years ago.

Online tributes to Dr Teoh have been published by the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, the British Orthopaedic Association, and The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, among others.

A crowdfunding endeavour has been launched to help the surgeon’s young family. Those who wish to donate may do so here:

The endeavour also invites those who knew Dr Teoh to send in “pictures, memories, letters, and stories about Kar. These will be compiled for Hugo, Kar’s 2-year-old son, ensuring he grows up with a vivid picture of the incredible person his father was” through this email address: [email protected]

SINGAPORE: Celebrity photographer Walter Tan has been taking pictures of Mediacorp artist Desmond Tan for quite some time now, and the two have built an indestructible “bromance” with each other. It all started seven years ago when they had a commercial shoot together.

Walter Tan explained the moment they met and how they became buddies: “He [Desmond Tan] was the first celebrity I had ever shot for at the time, so I was excited! After the shoot, I tried my luck and passed him my name card and told him that I would love to work with him if the opportunity ever came up.”

He added: “A year later, he reached out to collaborate on his (Desmond Tan) music video, Merry Summer Christmas, and the rest is history!”

Walter had now traveled with Desmpnd to Paris and Milan for the 2023 Men’s Fashion Week. He was also the photographer at his intimate wedding last year in Singapore.

The photographer admitted that he looks up to Desmond as a big brother.

“He’s always pushing me to scale greater heights. I’m really grateful that he took a leap of faith with me at the start of my career and provided that stepping stone to my first luxury brand – Louis Vuitton. In fact, that was the first fashion job I was ever booked for,” he declared.

Today, he is also working with brands such as L’Oreal and Dior. He is also close friends with Singapore’s top stars, such as Rui En and Jeanette Aw.

Tan considers photos and videos as digital time capsules.

“They transport me to specific moments in my life, allowing me to relive the emotions and experiences. I’ve even dedicated a wall at my work desk to showcase my favorite works, and each time I gaze at them, I’m reminded of how much change has happened since I started,” he said.

Walter added: “I’ve never interned with a photographer or production house, nor do I come from a similar education background because this career wasn’t planned.”

Recently, Walter Tan held a photo exhibition titled Dreamland. He shared in an IG post: “A picturesque photo exhibition for all ages. The little boy in me is screaming when I see so many kids appreciating fashion photography with a childlike twist. Tag me when you visit the dreamland!”

Who Should Pay On The First Date?

SINGAPORE: Despite being in a long-term relationship with her boyfriend of 12 years, a woman still wanted to know if she was missing out.

She wrote that the Built-To-Order (BTO) flat they applied for together would be ready in two years and that everything was going well between them. She also added that their goals were aligned.

“(BUT) what if the grass is greener on the other side? What if there’s other fishes in the sea? Ultimately I have not even stepped foot in the other ocean. What if I could find a better fish that could provide me a better life?” the woman asked. She said that her boyfriend was a typical guy with a stable income. He would pay for her meals, and did not have vices such as smoking, drinking or partying “and most importantly he is filial to his parents”.

She continued: “It’s just a little part of me feels that i’m “settling” since ultimately I have not dated any other guys before. But with the upcoming BTO, i would feel it is a waste that i’m throwing all these good stuff away just to “explore”. But if I don’t, i will always feel like there’s someone out there better, with car and condo waiting for me”.

The woman asked others in the group for advice.

Here’s what they said:

Last year, another girlfriend who wrote that there was a power struggle in their relationship took to social media asking if others had shared similar experiences.

In her post, she wrote that they had been in a relationship for a year and a half, and felt that he was someone she wanted to live her life with. “Personally I believe that everyone is imperfect in some way, and that all relationships has its ups and downs in its lifetime. I’ve always been attracted to “drive”, to have someone not just to grow old together, but to “grow” together”, she added.

However, the girlfriend wrote that their relationship was non-traditional, and she drew a salary more than twice what he earned.

Girlfriend earning more than twice her boyfriend’s salary says he makes her feel small, accuses her of trapping him into applying for BTO

SINGAPORE: A foreign domestic helper took to social media complaining about her employer and workload because she did not seem to have the same free time as other maids.

In an anonymous post to a support group on social media for domestic helpers and employers alike, the maid wrote that in her previous household, she was able to finish a two-year contract without any complaints about her work. “But this time I’m tired and I’m not able to manage my time..I can barely finished my work.. Woke up 5.30.sleep sometimes 11….day time no take nap. Take care 21 month Prepared lunch box. breakfast + dinner Meanwhile take care boy also”, she added.

The helper wrote that her employers would also ask her to bring them things like water to drink even if she was cooking. They would also ask her to change the child’s diaper. She added that she only worked for them for two months and said: “I know I’m helper and it’s my duty to that..but sometimes if my boss just help me to do maybe I have more time to focus on wat I am doing”.

She wrote that while she was initially confused and even entertained the possibility of being lazy, she said that she had “no time to play my phone also like how other helper active..I don’t call or talk to friend or family at day time”.

She said that her employer would ask her for everything without even helping a bit. The helper asked others in the group if it would be better for her to ask for a transfer. Even though she had been working for her employers for about two months, she said that they did not fully trust her and still were worried about their baby’s care.

Here’s what netizens who commented on the post said:

Earlier this year, a stay-at-home mother to three girls took to social media asking for opinions on her maid.

She said that her maid holds her own handphone and has no restrictions on phone usage. Her three children are aged five, three and two. “I am hands on with kids and only need help from helper sometimes with washing them/changing. My helper holds her own hp & no restriction / i dont keep her hp and she gets wifi all day round. When i leave her home with the girls, shes very happy ( coz get hp usage nonstop) when im at home, she put in black face even though less hands on kids”, the woman wrote.

She asked if all other maids liked being at home without their employers and caring for their children.

Employer says her maid is very happy to stay home with the kids and unlimited phone usage; she starts sulking when adults come back
