Gigi Lai, 49, and Michelle Reis, 50, stun in new video

0

Hong Kong — Hong Kong star Gigi Lai appears to be meeting up with her  celebrity friends lately. Lai caught up with her War and Beauty co-star Charmaine Sheh last month and their meetup left the internet abuzz with netizens saying that both stars still look almost as young as when they starred in the TVB palace drama 19 years ago.

Recently, Lai had tea with Michelle Reis, a fellow actress-turned-tai-tai.

“We talk about everything under the sun, whether it’s about fitness, beauty, or looking after our kids. I believe that the secret behind staying beautiful lies in sharing good food with like-minded friends. A sweet friendship refreshes the soul,” wrote Lai.

Lai and Reis seem to not have aged a day, commented netizens. Lai turns 50 in October while Reis will celebrate her 51st birthday in June, according to 8days.sg.

As one netizen put it, “You can edit photos to make yourself look good before uploading them, but it’s much harder to do that with a video. I tried watching this thrice to see if they beautified themselves with an app, but I can’t see any trace of that. They look amazing!”

Fans of Lai and Reis hope to see them make a TV comeback, commenting that seeing these two beauties on screen again would be “a dream come true”.

“It’s hard to find actresses that have grace, beauty and talent these days. Gigi and Michelle fit the bill, and I’m sure rookie actresses will have plenty to learn from them too,” commented a fan.

Lai and Reis have been urged by netizens to film a video series where they share their fitness and beauty routines, although netizens have jokingly pointed out that it’s probably “way too late” for them to look as good as the actresses.

Born on October 1, 1971, Gigi Lai is a former Hong Kong actress and singer. Entering the entertainment industry in 1985, Lai was under a contract with the television station TVB from 1991 until she retired in 2008. Nicknamed the “Goddess of Beauty” (愛美神) by the Hong Kong media, she is best known for her roles in The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber (2000), War and Beauty (2004), for which she won the TVB Anniversary Award for Best Actress, The Charm Beneath (2005), The Dance of Passion (2006), and The Gem of Life (2009)./TISG

Actor Terence Cao to plead guilty to breaking Covid regulations with b-day party last October

Singapore— Television actor Terence Cao’s lawyer said in court on Tuesday (Apr 27) that the celebrity will plead guilty to flouting Covid-19 regulations in October last year, when he hosted a birthday party for fellow actor Jeffrey Xu.

The party was attended by a dozen guests.

Cao will be in court on May 25 to enter his guilty plea.

Yahoo! Singapore quotes Cao’s lawyer SS Dhillon as saying the actor will be “taking a certain course” after representations were rejected by the prosecution.

The actor had thrown a birthday party for Xu on Oct 2 and 3, 2020, at his condominium at Daisy Road. At that time, Covid-19 regulations capped a maximum of five visitors for every household, as Singapore was still in Phase 2 of the country’s reopening, and stricter safe distancing measures were still being observed.

The public was first alerted to this breach of Covid-19 regulations when photos of Cao and 13 others, including celebrities deejay Sonia Chew and actor Shane Pow, were posted on Xu’s Instagram account and published in Shinmin Daily News.

Cao, Xu, Pow and Chew are Mediacorp artistes. Two other celebrities in the photos,  Jeremy Chan and Julie Tan, are not with Mediacorp.

When the breach of regulations was made public, Mediacorp told Mothership, “We take this matter seriously. Safety is a priority. We constantly brief and remind our artistes to adhere to safe management guidelines both in their professional and personal capacities.”

Mediacorp also said the artistes “deeply regret” their actions and added they were apologising “for the mistake and assure everyone that this will not happen again”.

The other six guests who attended the dinner party have been identified as Heng Tee Kok, Tan Jun Chuan, Debbie Lu Shuyi, Eleanor Wang Chunwei, Valnice Yek Jiahui, Dawn Yeoh Yishan and Lance Lim Chee Keong.

Yahoo! added that Lim will also be entering a guilty plea next month to the charge of gathering outside his residence with 12 individuals who were not from the same household that night.

According to the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), the other 11 people at the party were given a S$300 for their participation in the incident. This is due to the BCA’s decision to issue a composition fine in lieu of prosecution, after weighing the level of their culpability in the matter.

Should Cao and Lim be convicted of the breach of pandemic regulations, they may be fined as much as S$10,000 and jailed for up to six months.

Police station inspector charged with molesting 2 men at police facility

Singapore—A police station inspector faces two charges after allegedly molesting two men in January 2020.

Yick Wai Hong, 46, was charged in a district court on Tuesday (Apr 27) for allegedly molesting the two men at a police facility, according to The Straits Times (ST).

Because of a gag order, the names of the two men have not been disclosed. Neither does it say in court documents whether they are members of the Singapore Police Force (SPF).

In both instances, the station inspector is said to have pulled the men’s heads towards his groin. In the first incident, the head of the victim touched Yick’s groin when the station inspector pulled it towards himself.

ST reported that the station inspector was suspended from service earlier this month, on April 8, according to a statement given by the SPF.

“Officers of the Singapore Police Force are expected to uphold the law and maintain high standards of discipline and integrity. We deal with officers who break the law severely, including charging them in court,” a police spokesman is quoted as saying.

Yick could be given a two-year jail sentence and a fine or a caning for every count of molestation.

The station inspector’s bail was set at S$10,000.

He will be back in court on May 18.

Unfortunately, Yick is not the only officer in recent times who has faced molestation charges.

Two years ago, Senior Staff Sergeant Lee Sze Chiat was sentenced to one year in jail as well as one stroke of the cane after he was convicted of molesting two women while they were in custody.

The police officer, then 39, had been on the force for 17 years but was interdicted from service in December 2017.

Lee was found to have groped one woman and forced another to perform sexual acts on him, while both women were not only in custody but handcuffed. These offences occurred in an interview room at Jurong Police Divisional Headquarters.

District Judge Christopher Tan called what Lee did to the women a serious abuse of trust, The New Paper (TNP) said.

He took exception to the fact that the women had been in handcuffs while they were molested, saying,  “What’s aggravating is that these restraints were actually physical strictures that the law empowers policemen to use to protect the innocent.

“But they were used to subjugate her to fulfil his desires.”

Josephine Teo: Covid fallout on SG jobs worse if not for partnership between Govt, unions and employers

Singapore — According to outgoing Manpower Minister Josephine Teo, the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on jobs in Singapore would have been worse if not for the tripartite partnership in place.

Mrs Teo, who will succeed Mr S Iswaran as Minister for Communication and Information next month, gave her May Day message on Tuesday (Apr 27), The Straits Times reported.

She said that the robust partnership between the Government, unions and employers meant measures could be taken quickly to cut costs and save jobs during the pandemic.

Otherwise, the impact would have been heavier on local jobs, Ms Teo added.

The Manpower Minister especially praised the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) for “constructive unionism” as in past crises.

The NTUC successfully appealed to employers and workers to work together to keep businesses afloat and save jobs.

Ms Teo added, “Where employers have exhausted ways of cutting business costs in other areas, the unions worked with employers on necessary measures to manage excess manpower, including wage cuts necessary to avoid retrenchment.

“Employers, too, helped to preserve jobs and maintain a strong Singaporean core even if they had to restructure.”

She also made mentioned the NTUC Care Fund (Covid-19), which gave distressed union members S$300 in financial assistance.

Meanwhile, for the self-employed, the NTUC started a training fund giving an allowance to those attending training courses. It also administered the Self-Employed Person Income Relief Scheme.

Ms Teo said, “These initiatives, together with NTUC’s ability to work closely with unions, workers, employers and the Government to implement changes quickly, helped cushion the impact of the crisis.”

“Together with employers and the Government, NTUC is building a more resilient workforce that is ready for the future,” she added.

Dr Tan See Leng will replace Ms Teo as Manpower Minister on May 15.

0

Hong Kong — Chinese model Moka Fang, 33, continues to share snippets of her daily life with her fans on social media even after marrying Heavenly King Aaron Kwok, 55, and becoming the mother of two daughters. Most of the time, fans are grateful for the photos and videos that Fang shares and the fact that she takes the time to reply to them.

Recently she shared a collection of photos on her Weibo account where a well-maintained garden could be seen, reported 8days.sg. Netizens in comments on her post speculated whether her husband had bought a luxury mansion for her as a gift. The question is, what made the netizens think Aaron Kwok had bought a mansion for Fang? It appears that the celebrity couple were recently shopping for art together, and netizens concluded they were doing so to furnish a new mansion.

Some netizens also pointed out that Kwok and Fang had no problems showing affection in public. They cited as “proof” a beach photo of the couple with their two daughters uploaded by Fang.

Orphan brothers who were homeless ask for help to furnish rental flat

Singapore — Two orphan brothers who were found sleeping on a staircase landing during the circuit breaker last year are now asking a charity organisation to help them furnish their rental flat.

They were found by Madam Sarimah, a woman from the charity Project Pencil, which collects donations of school supplies and stationery.

One of the boys asked her for help and she kindly managed to find him a family to take him in and care for him for a few months.

Later, a rental unit was found for the two brothers by New Hope Community Services (NHCS), an organisation that aims to provide a Shelter of Hope to homeless Singaporeans.

The brothers have been sharing the unit with other tenants.

Now, the brothers have been offered another rental unit in the northern part of Singapore.

The pair moved into their new home on Monday (Apr 26).

One of the brothers reached out to Mdm Sarimah once more, asking if she could get them a used washing machine.

Upon realising the flat was bare, Mdm Sarimah sought help from friends and neighbours, who bought two fans, mattresses, pillows and blankets for the brothers.

“Well at least they have a (sic) decent beddings to sleep on now. A fridge will be sent this weekend”, a Facebook update on Project Pencil read.

In another update on Wednesday (Apr 28) afternoon, Mdm Sarimah shared that they were fundraising for the two boys to help them clean and paint the unit.

She also requested that people refrain from sending in groceries as the two brothers do not cook and mostly eat instant food.

“The fridge hasn’t arrived yet. Hence no food storage”, she added.

The update also noted that the boys would rather not have visitors.

Mdm Sarimah added, “We need to respect their privacy. Sometimes our intentions to help may unknowingly ‘hurt’ or offended (sic) them in some ways that can make them feel inferior”.

She explained that visitors who came by previously got into a heated argument with one of the brothers after asking sensitive and personal questions.

“Lastly, for any contributions in-kind or donations, kindly contact Mdm Sarimah @83884984”, she added. /TISG

Tourist-starved Greek islands strive for ‘Covid-free’ image

ATHENS — White sandy beaches make Elafonisos a popular holiday destination but it’s the Greek island’s small population that puts it top-of-the-list for Covid jabs as the country pushes to restart tourism before summer.

In January, the Greek government said it would prioritise immunity on smaller islands, promising they would be fully vaccinated by the end of April.

To that end, jabs are being distributed to inhabitants of dozens of islands in the Aegean sea to the east and the Ionian sea to the west, where municipalities are hungry to reopen fully to tourists next month.

“70 per cent of the island’s population will be vaccinated before mid-May,” says Elafonisos mayor Efi Liarou, a move she said would “provide a kind of shield for the inhabitants.”

“It’s a very important step that guarantees the launch of the tourist season and sends a message of optimism,” she continues, proud of what she sees as her island’s “Covid-free identity”.

Seated outside the island’s vaccination centre, Panagiotis Aronis, 70, awaits his turn to receive his second Covid jab.

“The sky is clear, the process is going well,” he says, casting his eyes to the blue above him.

“With a little luck we will all be able to survive,” Aronis muses.

Jabs by ferry

Parked outside the centre is a medical truck stacked with special boxes full of Covid-19 vaccine doses.

Doctor Anargyros Mariolis, in charge of vaccination on Elafonisos, escorted the truck from the mainland by ferry on Friday.

And after finishing a day of giving jabs at the centre, Mariolis begins visits to home-bound elderly residents.

“Our goal is to create a wall of immunity to get back to normal as fast as possible,” he tells AFP.

The jab campaign is completely voluntary and doesn’t apply to anyone under the age of 18.

Nevertheless, Mariolis hails as “exemplary” the deployment of “Operation Freedom” – as Greek health authorities have dubbed it – echoing the optimism of the health ministry’s secretary general Marios Themistocleous.

“Soon we will have finished vaccinating on islands with fewer than 1,000 residents,” Themistocleous said last week while inspecting efforts on the island of Irakleia.

“We will then accelerate our efforts on the bigger islands,” he said.

Measuring just 18 square kilometres (7 square miles), Elafonisos lies just off the Peloponnese peninsula and welcomes an average of 200,000 tourists every year – but that number was decimated by the pandemic in 2020.

The third wave of the pandemic has hit Greece particularly hard with the majority of the country’s nearly 10,000 virus deaths occurring over the last few months.

“We’re going to make it”

Greece has been under virus restrictions – including a curfew of varying strictness – since November.

But like other tourism-dependent Mediterranean economies, Greece began to re-open non-essential businesses and schools in early April, while restaurants and cafes are set to offer outdoor seating on May 3.

One week ago, Greece lifted a mandatory seven-day quarantine for travellers from European Union countries, the UK, the US, Israel, Serbia and the United Arab Emirates, with tourists required to provide proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test.

On Monday, US operator Delta Airlines said it would resume flights to Greece via New York on May 29, and add a direct flight from Atlanta on July 3.

Local business people on Elafonisos are counting on their image as a safe haven from the virus to help draw their customers back.

“The Covid-free identity is a privilege for our island,” says Chryssoula Kataga, 43, who owns a restaurant in the island’s port.

“It reassures tourists after this whole period of confinement,” she said.

Babis Aronis is finishing renovations on his hotel nearby and says he’s already started getting calls for reservations.

“After May 14, everything will be better,” he says. “We’re going to make it this summer.” – ETX Studio

Lawrence Wong posts photo of his 1984 primary school report book, announces new PSLE scoring system

Singapore—Adding a personal touch to the announcement of the new PSLE scoring system, Education Minister Lawrence Wong posted a picture on Facebook on Tuesday (Apr 27) of his very own primary school report book, dating back to 1984.

Mr Wong, 48, will be leaving the Ministry of Education (MOE) to replace Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat as Finance Minister on May 15.

He also added an anecdote about how supportive his parents had been of his choices in school, even as he wrote that he does not remember what his PSLE score had been.

“But I do recall selecting Tanjong Katong Technical as my preferred secondary school – that was the school nearest to my home, and it was also where most of my friends were going.

“We all thought it would be great to continue in the same school together. My parents gave me the latitude to consider my school options, and supported fully my choice.”

Tanjong Katong Technical Secondary School is now known as Tanjong Katong Secondary School. Mr Wong was a student there after completing his primary education at Haig Boys’ School and then attended Victoria Junior College. Subsequently, on a Public Service Commission scholarship, he read economics as an undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and then did his Master’s in economics at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He also holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Mr Wong said that MOE had released the indicative cut-off points under the new PSLE scoring system, which differ across schools, but will, under the new system, “be less finely differentiated.”

He added that this gives students a bigger choice of schools.

“I hope all students will consider your options carefully, and choose a school that best fits your learning needs and interests!,” the Minister wrote.

In a media release on Tuesday, MOE said that the new system is part of the ministry’s “efforts to shift away from an over-emphasis on academic results by reducing fine differentiation of students’ examination results at a young age”.

Furthermore, MOE will be releasing the indicative PSLE Score ranges for individual secondary schools.

The new scoring system means that each student will be scored by Achievement Levels based on their individual performance in PSLE subjects, regardless of how the other examinees have done.

As for Mr Wong’s point about the PSLE Scores being “less finely differentiated” under the new system, MOE wrote that “there are now only 29 possible PSLE Scores compared to more than 200 possible aggregates under the previous T-score system”.

This means that schools will be less differentiated by their Cut-Off Point (COP), as the minister pointed out, giving students a bigger choice of secondary schools to attend.

More details concerning the new PSLE scoring system may be found here.

Adele seen for first time in months

0

It has been a long time since singer Adele has been spotted in public and now she is making a comeback by attending an Oscars after-party and enjoying herself.

The 32-year-old Grammy winner was at a post-show party on Sunday (April 25) wearing an elaborate lime green coat with feathered sleeves. Adele was seen dancing to the Ja Rule and Jennifer Lopez song I’m Real on footage shared on social media. The Hello singer also took a selfie with Judas and the Black Messiah actress Amber Chardae Robinson, who shared the snap on her Instagram Stories.

According to E! News, the party was held for Daniel Kaluuya, who won the best supporting actor trophy on Sunday for his work in Judas. The 32-year-old star joked during his acceptance speech that he would not go back to work until Tuesday because he planned to party all night to celebrate his win.

Adele’s last public appearance was in October 2020 when she hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live. The singer was just the host and not the musical guest but she did sing in a couple of sketches, reported US Weekly.

Adele’s last appearance in public was on SNL. Picture: Instagram

“My album’s not finished, and I’m also too scared to be both [the host and musical guest],” she explained. “I’d rather put on some wigs … have a glass of wine or six and just see what happens. Who knows?”

Fans of the singer have been awaiting new music from her. She has not released an album in more than five years. Adele’s friend Alan Carr said that he has heard part of her new album but no title or release date has appeared yet.

“I’ve actually heard some tracks on it. Oh my God, it’s amazing — so amazing,” he told Grazia U.K. earlier this year. “That voice is like an old friend, because there are some people in the charts who sound a bit like Adele and then when you hear Adele’s voice, you go, ‘Oh, no, there’s only one.’”

Adele may not have attended the Oscars ceremony on Sunday, but the singer has an Academy Award of her own. In 2013, she won the best original song trophy for Skyfall from the James Bond movie of the same name. It was the first Oscar for a Bond film in 47 years. At that time Adele had just given birth to her son, Angelo, 8, whom she shares with former husband Simon Konecki.

After her victory, she joked that she wouldn’t be able to celebrate all night because of her new mom status. “One glass of champagne and I’m gone,” she said at the time./TISG
