Netflix cancels Meghan Markle’s animated series Pearl, no special treatment even for British Royal family

Netflix has cancelled Meghan Markle’s animated series Pearl, the latest among a slew of cancellations by the streaming service. Looks like Netflix is no longer prepared to treat even the British Royal family with a light hand. The production was a collaboration between Meghan Markle and David Furnish, who is also married to Elton John.

Netflix may appear to be backpedalling after spending tens of millions on an exclusive television deal with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The truth is, viewers are not going to keep paying for politically correct drama and stories that are not hard hitting. They want some dirt on the royals, maybe a Kardashian type thing with a royal twist.

Rumour has it that the announcement about Pearl being axed will spell big trouble for the Sussexes and their lucrative deals with Hollywood companies. At the end of the day, everyone wants a product that’s going to sell.

“Mark my words, Netflix’s announcement spells deep trouble for the Sussexes’ golden handcuffs deals with Hollywood companies, who, behind the glossy PR statements, are paying for product that will sell,” said journalist Dan Wooton.

“Netflix is no longer prepared to treat even its British Royal Family staff members with kid gloves.”

So first to go in the sweeping cuts set to hit the company are the sorts of telly vanity projects that Netflix thought gave them kudos in liberal luvvie circles, but won’t end up resulting in shows that anyone wants to subscribe to watch, added Wooton.

The heat is now on the royal couple in exile to provide content that’s going to make people sit up in their seats and most likely what people want is stories about royal life, especially if they keep eyeballing the big money.

According to a statement on Prince Harry and Markle’s production company’s website Archewell the show revolves around a “young girl’s heroic adventure as she learns to step into her power”. Markle has described Pearl as a show that “celebrates extraordinary women throughout history.”

Last June, when the deal was announced, Meghan gushed: “Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to overcome life’s daily challenges. David Furnish and I have been eager to bring this special series to light, and I am delighted we are able to announce it today.”

Pearl is not the only animated series on Netflix to get the chop. Two other shows, Dino Daycare and Boons and Curses, were also cancelled by Netflix mid-production. This turn of events is likely due to Netflix having lost 200,000 subscribers.

Netflix said that Archewell Productions “remains a valued partner, and we are continuing to work together on a number of projects, including the upcoming documentary series Heart of Invictus.”

Last month, Netflix reported a drop in subscribers for the first time in a decade, sparking a plunge in its share price.

Netflix blamed the quarter-over-quarter erosion on suspension of its service in Russia due to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Disney showed earlier this year that it was closing the gap with market leader Netflix in America’s TV streaming wars.

S’pore Roads: “This guy champion. Rollerblading at CTE” — Netizen: ‘Our roads are getting crazier & crazier’

A man spotted rollerblading on the Central Expressway (CTE) got netizens wondering what happened to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) as Singapore roads are getting “crazier and crazier.”

“This guy champion. Rollerblading at CTE,” wrote Facebook page Singapore roads accident.com in a post on Friday (May 6). ROADS.sg shared the video and asked in disbelief, “Really, rollerblading on CTE?”

The attached video confirmed that a man was really cruising along the expressway on skates on Friday.

“What happened to our LTA? Can’t they see it through CCTV and immediately put a stop or wait for something to happen, then form board of enquiry, do some stupid study on it, later just wayang a bit with some stupid measures,” wrote Facebook user Phoi Steve expressing concern on the incident.

At one point, he was rollerblading on the left-most lane, causing vehicles around him to slow down cautiously.

“… how come camera on the highway does not capture this and dispatch the authority,” added another Facebook user.

Others wondered if this was only the beginning.

M’sian motorcyclist dies in PIE accident; family appealing for witnesses

A 63-year-old Malaysian motorcyclist was involved in a fatal accident on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) on Apr 29; his family is now appealing for any information on what happened. The man reportedly got into an accident between 5 pm and 6 pm at PIE towards Tuas near the Jahar Bahar exit. Unfortunately, he did not survive.

“The family of the deceased hopes to find out the cause of the accident and wishes that those who witnessed this accident will come forward,” wrote a politician Facebook page Wong Bor Yang 黄勃扬 on May 4. “If you have any relevant information of the accident, please approach us immediately at 016-7763627,” the post noted.

According to 8TV Mandarin News, the family of the deceased have nearly no information on what caused the accident. The family’s appeal has been shared on other Facebook pages, such as Traffics accident.SG and ROADS.sg

Although there are security cameras installed at the scene of the accident, China Press reported that the police are currently investigating the case and could not release any information at the moment.

In April last year, a motorcyclist was involved in a fatal accident involving two lorries along PIE. The motorcyclist was found trapped under a lorry and was released using an airbag, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The police and SCDF announced that the man was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic.

“It’s not good to travel to work from Johor Bahru to Singapore every day. Too dangerous,” noted Facebook user He Lim on the latest incident.

‘How to U-turn politely’ video gets netizen’s respect & approval

When two polite motorists meet, one’s road experiences improve. This was the case for a driver informing a nearby motorcyclist that he wanted to U-turn at the junction.

“How to U-turn politely,” wrote Facebook page ROADS.sg on a video that could serve as a tutorial for other road users.

The video showed a driver at the front of a junction, rolling his window down to gesture at the motorcyclist recording the scene.

Using hand gestures, the driver indicated that he planned to make a U-turn.

The motorcyclist then nodded in agreement, to which the driver raised his palm in appreciation.

As the lights turned green, the driver inched his way to make the U-turn.

The video garnered netizens’ respect, with many noting this was better “than those who make a U-turn out of the blue.”

“Good job!!!! This should be the way how we can have more grace. Really needs to start showing a more gracious attitude on the road!” commented Facebook user Wong Sandra.

“Really this should be the way ma, very hard to do like wat the driver did meh? Simply asking other road user politely please give way, and I’m sure they willing to do so. Kudos to the both of them,” said Facebook user Daniel Wong, his comment receiving multiple likes.

Others noted that it only takes a wave and a gesture. “All in five to 10 seconds,” said a netizen.

Even though the incident between the driver and rider was handled graciously, it appears that something else happened up ahead at the pedestrian crossing.

“Wah piang. Green arrow can turn already, but the elderly couple still jaywalking,” said Facebook user Derrick Eng.

“My attention got shifted when I saw people crossing on red man. That’s a hazard,” added netizen Tinnitus Taufiq. /TISG

Bulldogs die after being left by dog trainer in car boot for 1.5 hours

A dog trainer left her client’s two bulldogs in a car after receiving news that another dog bit a dog she trained. She realised 1.5 hours later that the bulldogs were still in the car, but it was too late.

Sabrina Sim Xin Huey, 30, pleaded guilty on Thursday (May 5) to one charge under the Animals and Birds Act for failing to take reasonable steps to ensure that the dogs she was handling were not subjected to unreasonable or unnecessary pain or suffering.

It was reported that the bulldogs’ owner hired Sim to train the canines, which included both dogs staying with Sim throughout the training period.

On Aug 25, 2020, Sim arrived at the open carpark of her residence and got distracted by a social media post from her previous customer.

Sim left the car and locked it, completely forgetting about the two other passengers.

After 1.5 hours, Sim suddenly remembered she had left the two dogs in the boot of her hatchback.

She found the dogs unresponsive and spent another 30 minutes driving to a veterinary clinic, but both animals had already passed away.

According to a post-mortem examination of one of the dogs’ tissue samples, the cause of death was heat stress.

Sim is a dog trainer and needs to be held to a higher standard of care than the average person regarding pet handling, said Mr Andy Dinesh, prosecutor for the National Parks Board (NParks), in a Today report.

He added that it was unfortunate for Sim to leave the dogs out of forgetfulness, given that she was an accredited trainer.

Meanwhile, defence counsel Clement Julien Tan from Selvam LLC noted that Sim had handled the dogs professionally for 2.5 months before the incident.

WhatsApp messages between Sim and the bulldogs’ owner also indicated a positive working relationship, with the owner showing a high level of satisfaction with Sim’s services.

Reports noted that Sim had trained more than 200 dogs before and 45 dogs after the incident. She received no complaints and numerous positive feedback.

Forgetting gets “even the best among us,” added Mr Tan.

Sim apologised for the incident on the same day and handed over an undisclosed amount of compensation to show her remorse, said Mr Tan.

Sim works as a dog trainer to support herself and two elderly parents. She is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on June 1.

She can be sentenced to up to two years’ jail, fined up to S$40,000, or both. /TISG

Lack of Cleaners Causes a Bottleneck in Singapore’s Return Tray System, Sparks Comparison with Japan’s Efficient Practices

Singapore — The return tray initiative faces scrutiny after a customer pointed out on social media the bottleneck caused by a lack of cleaning staff in a local food court.

“Return tray also no use. Whole food court only has one cleaner,” wrote Facebook page Complaint Singapore member Danny Tan.

He attached photos of a kopitiam in PLQ Mall where tables had filled with used trays stacked on top of each other.

Photo: FB screengrab/Complaint Singapore
Photo: FB screengrab/Complaint Singapore

“In Japan, all trays are to be returned back to the respective stalls they patronise. The respective stalls will wash themselves. Whole food court only one or two cleaners to wipe down the table,” commented Facebook user Annabel Soon on the post.

Meanwhile, others noted that the Japanese way won’t work in Singapore due to the lack of space for returned trays or “greedy coffeeshop owner or main tenant charging tenants for plate collection or cleaning.”

Background on Japan’s tray return system

Nearly all food courts in Japan have a system that minimises the need for extra staff to clear up tables.

Even the smallest stalls in a train station food court have a section to its left or right comprised of a few shelves for customers to leave their used trays, plates, and crockery.

Shopping mall food courts, which can accommodate heavier foot traffic, don’t usually employ cleaners because of a similar process.

On top of customers returning their trays to the correct stall, there are sections, usually in the middle or key points around the area, where diners can grab clean rags and bottles of cleaning liquid to wipe down their tables. They can also dump liquids and recycle the trash at designated spots.

Photo: YT screengrab/TheJapanChannelDcom

The same practice can be seen in most coffee shops and fast food establishments such as Starbucks, Tully’s, KFC or McDonald’s, where customers leave their trays at designated stations and recycle trash themselves.

This enables an entire food outlet to have zero food attendants because the cashiers or kitchen staff dash out to quickly wipe down an already clear table for the next customer.

Tray return is a good policy

Netizens noted that the overall policy of returning trays is a good idea. “However, the public and the bosses are not prepared enough to support this policy,” said Facebook user Loh Wai Poon.

“While the customers are forced to comply with return the tray, the bosses see the opportunity to cut the cost of hiring cleaners and cleaning contractors. So we return the trays promptly, but there are not enough cleaners or shelves to clean and hold the returned trays. The result is the mess above!” he said, adding these were “common sense issues and not rocket science.” /TISG

S’pore Army & Police STAR WARS day posts draw ridicule & criticisms

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Singapore Police Force (SPF) tried to ride on Star Wars day, fun and action. But their social media posts drew ridicule from some quarters.

Responding to the Singapore Army’s post, several Facebook users asked if the social media content creators knew that Stormtroopers are the bad guys, serve an evil lord and are very bad shooters.

Others did a wordplay on Palpatine, the evil lord Stormtroopers served.

Responding to the comments on their Facebook, the Singapore Army said that they created the post to draw attention to the Army Open House from 28 to 30 May. Those that visited them at the open house could “view (their) actual capabilities, and see if you (netizens) can shoot better than their troopers”, said the Singapore Army.

The post by Singapore Army is trending with over 440 shares, 880 likes and 260 comments.

The Rochor Neighbourhood Police Centre of the SPF also tried to cash in on the action with their own Facebook post, but they got it all wrong.

One Facebook user pointed out that the salute the officers in the post were making is a ‘Vulcan salute’ from the Star Trek franchise, and not from the Star Wars series.

Another top Facebook commenter said: “The PR department must really not know Star Wars well….”

While another pointed out: “oof, I don’t know what’s worse. The fact they’ve aligned themselves with the Empire or that they seem to think Star Trek and Star Wars is the same thing. Live Long, and Prosper 🖖 is Star Trek.”

Others asked if the SPF is part of the oppressive empire filled with ‘bobo’ (bad) shooters.

The post by the Rochor Neighbourhood Police Centre is also trending on Twitter.

Star Wars Day is an informal commemorative day observed annually on May 4 to celebrate the Star Wars media franchise created by founder and former chairman and CEO of Lucasfilm, George Lucas. Observance of the day spread quickly through media and grassroots celebrations since the franchise began in 1977.

The date originated from the pun “May the Fourth be with you”, a variant of the popular Star Wars catchphrase “May the Force be with you”. Even though the holiday was not created or declared by Lucasfilm, many Star Wars fans around the world have chosen to celebrate the holiday.  It has since been embraced by Lucasfilm and parent company Disney as an annual celebration of Star Wars.

Stormtroopers are fictional soldiers in the Star Wars franchise. Introduced in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), the Stormtroopers are the soldiers shock troops/space marines of the Galactic Empire, under the leadership of Emperor Palpatine and his commanders.

S’pore Catholic Church prominent figure committed unlawful sexual acts with 2 teenage boys

A man who was part of a religious order of the Catholic faith committed unlawful sexual acts with two teenage boys, sentenced to five years in jail on Thursday (May 5). The Singaporean is 60 years of age and is not a priest. The offender, however, had taken a vow of celibacy and was never married.

Deputy Public Prosecutors (DPP) who argued the case said that the man had sexually groomed the boys. Although he had committed the sex acts on the boys without the use of threats, force or coercion, he had been in “a position of significant influence and authority” at the time of his offences, said the DPP.

He pleaded guilty to one charge of voluntarily having carnal intercourse against the order of nature and one charge under the Children and Young Persons Act.

Details about the man and his victims cannot be disclosed due to a gag order by the Court. The gag order also covers the man’s designation and appointment and the address of the incident location.

For voluntarily having carnal intercourse against the order of nature, the man could have been jailed for up to 10 years and fined. For committing an offence under the Children and Young Persons Act, the man could have been jailed for up to two years and fined up to $5,000, if it had been his first offence.

The Roman Catholic Church in Singapore (RCC Singapore) responded to the conviction of one of its prominent members by saying that it is with great sadness and regret that they have learnt of the case. The Archbishop of RCC Singapore, William Goh, said: “Like many of you, I am dismayed, shocked, and ashamed. Some of us are confused as to what actually took place and how this could have happened.”

He apologised on behalf of the Church and offered his heartfelt sympathy to those who have suffered on account of this crime, and assured that the Church takes very seriously the provision of a safe environment, especially where children and young persons are present.

The Archbishop acknowledged that “a cloud of suspicion now hangs over those who have given themselves to live a life of service” despite many church leaders working hard to instil the values of the Catholic faith in the young.

In 2013, Singapore-born psychotherapist and author Jane Leigh, a single mother of two who now lives in Melbourne, alleged in her autobiography My Nine Lives Last that she was sexually abused by Roman Catholic priests when she was a teenager.

Starting from when she was 12 years old, she was abused for two and half years during the secluded one-on-one outings by a 34-year-old priest whom she initially met at neighbourhood mass held at her home when she was 12, he allegedly did so while picking or dropping her off when her parents were at work.

“This priest sexually abused me. He took the opportunity to do so when we were secluded – when he came to my home to pick me up or when he dropped me off in the afternoons when my parents were at work. Then he toyed with my emotions, telling me that he loved me and that he wanted to be with me,” she wrote.

After she reported the matter to her mother, she was berated for tempting the priest and sent to another Catholic priest for counselling. Consequently, the church stated that they will conduct the investigations.
