Mahathir: My government will not rot and fall apart

Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says his government will not rot and fall apart contrary to what the opposition is saying.

In a fighting mood, the Prime Minister says he is not alone because everywhere he goes, there are people who come to shake hands and express their support.

“You can see I am not walking alone,” he said.

He was responding to media queries on comments made by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who said Pakatan Harapan will break apart from “political gangrene” due to internal squabbling.

He said the people have opened their eyes now that the ‘drama’ is unfolding.

The coalition, he added, is dying slowly because of internal and intra-party power struggles and he thinks Pakatan would fall in the next general election.

People are losing faith with the coalition for not fulfilling its general election promises and address economic woes, he said.

“Infighting within and among Pakatan’s component parties are an open secret. They employ various strategies to dominate each other.

“Netizens are criticising Pakatan on social media. The rakyat cannot be fooled forever,” he said at the Putra World Trade Centre on Sunday. He was attending a Malaysian Indian Congress event.

Meanwhile, a group of Malay-Muslim NGO Ummah are planning to hold a rally to demand the Pakatan Harapan government dissolve Parliament.

It is claiming the government of Dr Mahathir has failed to protect the interests of the Muslim community.

He said it will be a grand rally that will urge the government to call for elections before its time is over.

In May, the group held a “405 Gathering” to protest the government allegedly sidelining the Malays and Muslims on issues pertaining to the Rome Statute, Icerd, Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), and the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim.

The fireman passed away from injuries he sustained during the Seafield temple riots. A large number of people joined the rally, but the NGO had the full support from the opposition parties Umno and the Islamists.

Nevertheless, Dr Mahathir is not impressed with the negative comments against his government by the opposition.

He said Pakatan Harapan stands together even when making critical decisions.

“Even in the party, you can see that this cabinet has stayed together and been able to make decisions on critical issues,” he told the media when attending a tourism event. -/TISG
