This is one way to avoid taking part in the $2.6 trillion food waste problem!

0

The Internet has many intelligent people showing us how to keep fruits and vegetables fresh for a longer period.

Whether we follow the tricks and ideas depends on us. But if we do not care about food waste, we may be part of a problem that cost the world a whopping US$2.6 trillion annually.

This includes USD 700 billion of environmental costs and USD 900 billion of social costs. This leaves the financial costs of food wastage to a substantial amount of about USD 1 trillion each year.

To get an idea of how much is wasted, see this slide show:

WHAT $1 TRILLION WOULD BUY (this is from 2011)

We are wasting food at a rate that is unimaginable. If we are throwing food, we are doing a disservice to the planet.

And one company came up with an innovative idea on how to protect produce by slowing spoilage-causing water loss and oxidation, keeping it fresh twice as long.

The company, Apeel, is making waves in developed nations.

SEE WHAT US$ 1.2 TRILLION CAN BUY IN 2020!

Available for organic and conventionally grown produce, Apeel is boasted as the only proven end-to-end solution for freshness.

“Perishability is so fundamental to the food system it’s almost unchallenged,” James Rogers, founder and CEO of Apeel, told The Spoon.

We are living in the age of innovations and greater modernisation. But it is also an age of imagination. It will be great if we could all follow the examples given by Apeel.

The company makes an edible coating for fruits and vegetables that extends their shelf life, in some cases by weeks.

Apeel uses materials that exist in the peels, seeds, and pulp of all fruits and vegetables.

What it does is to create a protective extra peel that seals moisture in and keeps oxygen out – and that is the answer!

That means the produce treated by Apeel stays fresh, nutritious, and delicious twice as long, says the companywebsite.

It also means less produce goes to waste throughout the supply chain.

Less waste for means less waste for the planet and a more abundant future for everyone, says Apeel.

South Korean boy group BTS was named entertainer of the year by Time magazine yesterday, adding to a list of accolades the group garnered this year. Consisting of seven members and debuting in 2013, BTS has become one of the world’s most popular group thanks to its catchy dancey songs, army of adoring fans and positive non-controversial messages.

BTS was nominated for the first major Grammy Award for a K-pop band last month and in the summer, their English-language track Dynamite became the band’s first to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

“BTS isn’t just the biggest K-pop act on the charts. They’ve become the biggest band in the world — full stop,” Time writer Raisa Bruner wrote in a profile of the group yesterday.

“And they did it in a year defined by setbacks, one in which the world hit pause and everyone struggled to maintain their connections.”

According to Twitter, this week BTS “Continues to Reign as Most Tweeted About Musicians” in the United States for a fourth straight year.

BTS will perform later on Thursday in a television special when Time magazine’s Person of the Year will be announced.

BTS, also known as Bangtan Sonyeondan (Bangtan Boys) consists of seven members, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. Their ages range from 23 to 28 years old.

The boyband debuted under Big Hit Entertainment in Seoul in 2013. BTS is also a backronym for Beyond the Scene in July 2017. Each BTS member co-writes and co-produces their own music and their music style includes a wide range of genres.

BTS is the first and only Korean act as of 2019 to top the US Billboard 200 with their studio album Love Yourself: Tear (2018) and have since hit the top of the US charts with their albums Love Yourself: Answer (2018) and Map of the Soul: Persona (2019), making BTS the first group since The Beatles to earn three number one albums in less than a year.

Lili Reinhart takes beloved rescue dog for walk

0

Riverdale star Lili Reinhart has been safely filming the much anticipated fifth season of the TV series in Vancouver, Canada amid the COVID-19 restrictions.

The 24-year-old decided to take her beloved rescue dog Milo for a walk around the block before heading to work on Wednesday. Reinhart looked comfortable in a matching green sweatsuit paired with black fleece-lined snow boots. The actress layered an oversized black coat over her crewneck sweatshirt that matched with the dog carrier over her shoulder.

Her bright blonde hair peeked from beneath her yellow beanie which had daisies embroidered on it. Reinhart’s mouth and nose were covered with a face mask to deter the spread of the COVID-19 virus. She patiently waited for her rescue dog who was busy sniffing all of the nearby plant life and roaming as far as his leash would let him. Reinhart, who plays the role of Betty Cooper on Riverdale adopted Milo back in February, right before the COVID-19 lockdown.

‘This is my new baby. He has quickly become a great love of mine. Meet Milo ❤️ my rescue sweetheart,’ wrote the star, who shared a photo of herself and her fur baby on Instagram.

Reinhart told her 26 million followers that she found Milo through Furever Freed Dog Rescue, which works to ‘save abandoned & abused dogs from high-kill shelters & find responsible, loving furever homes!’

The Riverdale star is smitten with Milo and she has dedicated her entire photo feed to the pooch. Milo was attacked by another dog in April while going out on a walk with Reinhart. Thankfully he has fully recovered.

‘I guess for all the people out there who care about my little dog, Milo, I was taking him out today to get some exercise but he was attacked by another dog,’ explained the star in a tear-filled IG Story at the time. Reinhart rushed Milo to the hospital where he went through surgery. She returned to Instagram a week later to update her followers about her dog’s miraculous recovery and how ‘thankful’ she is to have him by her side.

‘I almost lost Milo a week ago when he was attacked and I can’t even begin to imagine what my life would be like without him now,’ she wrote. Besides being a devoted fur parent, Reinhart spends most of her time in front of the camera as a co-lead on her hit TV series Riverdale, which is based on the classic Archie comics.

Reinhart has been seen out and about in Vancouver with series co-stars KJ Apa, Cole Sprouse, Camila Mendes and Madelaine Petsch since they resumed production on Riverdale in September.

The fifth season of the series is set to premiere on January  2021 and the season’s very first teaser trailer was released on Wednesday.

Pornhub rocked by child abuse, rape video claims

0

by Anne-Sophie THILL

Adult content giant Pornhub is in turmoil over claims it turned a blind eye to videos of child abuse, rape and revenge porn, leading Mastercard and Visa to cut payments to the site as lawmakers in Canada, where it is based, seek to hold it accountable.

Pressure has been mounting on the porn giant since the publication of an expose by New York Times writer Nicholas Kristof, who accused Pornhub of profiting from abusive content — and appealed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a self-proclaimed women’s advocate, to crack down.

“Why does Canada host a company that inflicts rape videos on the world?” Kristof asked — who shared the harrowing stories of several woman who attempted suicide over pornographic videos posted without their consent as teenagers.

The Times report brought to a head a controversy already simmering in Canada over such content, where 20 lawmakers urged the justice minister in a November open letter to take swift action against both Pornhub and parent company MindGeek.

The growing public backlash has seen more than two million people back a petition to shut it down, and led Mastercard to block payments to Pornhub on Thursday.

Visa quickly followed suit, pending a probe into the Times claim that of the 6.8 million new videos posted each year on the site, “many” depict “child abuse and nonconsensual violence,” including scenes of incest and women being asphyxiated in plastic bags.

Because Pornhub users can download videos directly from the site, the Times argued, images of abuse could be endlessly reposted elsewhere on the Internet.

Simon Corneau, a professor in the sexology department of the University of Quebec in Montreal, said the decisions by Visa and Mastercard were a “major” blow to Pornhub’s bottom line.

Pornhub called them “exceptionally disappointing,” pointing to changes it made following the Times report: banning unverified users from uploading videos to the site, banning free downloads and increasing content moderation.

The credit card titans’ ban, it said, was “crushing for the hundreds of thousands of models who rely on our platform for their livelihoods.”

Minimal verification
Times writer Kristof has given a cautious welcome to the site’s measures, saying: “A great deal depends on how responsibly Pornhub implements these, and it hasn’t earned my trust at all, but these seem significant.”

Based in Canada, but registered in Luxembourg, Pornhub had 42 billion visits last year.

Free to access, it generates revenues through advertising as well as paid subscriptions for premium content.

The company is not new to controversy.

In 2019, several groups, including Unilever and Kraft Heinz distanced themselves from Pornhub after an article in Britain’s Sunday Times identified videos with sexual content involving children.

Canadian Senator Julie Miville-Dechene, who in September proposed legislation aimed at preventing children from being exposed to pornography, told AFP there was “minimal verification” of video uploads on Pornhub.

And “even if Pornhub takes down a video, it can reappear elsewhere online and spread,” she said.

Miville-Dechene said she would take a wait and see attitude toward Pornhub’s latest measures.

A Liberal lawmaker meanwhile called Friday for the company’s top executives to appear before a parliamentary committee seeking explanations.

Responding to opposition questions, Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault this week told the House of Commons he was already working on new regulations to force “online platforms to eliminate illegal content including hate speech, child sexual exploitation and violent extremism content.”

A government bill would be introduced in early 2021, he said.

The spotlight on Pornhub comes in a context of proliferating child abuse imagery online: Cybertip, a Canadian tip line for reporting abuses, says it receives a total of about 10,000 calls per month about child exploitation cases.

In a statement, Pornhub told AFP it has “no tolerance” for content that shows sexual abuse of children — while arguing that such images are infinitely less prevalent on its site that other major internet platforms.

Internet Watch Foundation, it noted, reported 118 such cases of abuse on its site in the last three years, compared to 84 million on Facebook.

Large cracks in Jalan Besar shophouse pillars but engineers say building is safe

0

Singapore — Large cracks are visible across 10 pillars at an old shophouse in the Jalan Besar area but at least two engineers say it is safe.

The condition of the facade of the building at 45, Syed Alwi Road, has sparked concern among members of the public, according to a report in the Chinese-language newspaper Lianhe Wanbao on Thursday (Dec 10). It noted that parts of the building appear to have shifted at 4 of the 10 affected columns.

A Wanbao reader who wished to remain anonymous said he had contacted the police on two occasions about the cracks out of concern for the safety of the public. The building has a convenience store, a restaurant and a dormitory.

The police had informed the reader that they had contacted the relevant authorities after  initial inspections.

In a straitstimes.com report on Dec 10, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) gave the assurance that the cracks or shifting do not compromise the overall safety of the building. They had advised the building owner to consult a professional engineer (PE) last month.

The PE confirmed that the cracks do not affect the structural integrity of the building. Another engineer was also sent by BCA to inspect the building and had the same findings.

“The defects are likely to be caused by differential settlement between the building and the five-foot-way which are supported on different foundation systems. The building owner will be carrying out rectification works as recommended by his PE,” said the BCA engineer in a tnp.sg report on Friday (Dec 11).

Meanwhile, an employee of the convenience store has said that the cracks appeared about two years ago and that a small piece of cement appeared to have fallen from a pillar last month. “Fortunately, no one was hit,” said the employee.

The owner of the J Bistro restaurant, Mr John Chong, presumes the repeated road work in the area may have caused the underneath soil to move, thus creating cracks in the pillars. Mr Chong’s family owns the building. /TISG

Family offers S$2,000 reward to anyone who finds kidnapped cat

Singapore—A family whose cat was taken by an unidentified woman a few months ago is now offering a S$2,000 reward for its return.

The cat, a male Turkish Angora named Lolo, went missing on Sept 16, when a woman in a white shirt and dark shorts took the pet into a van along Robin Road at Bukit Timah at about 7:30 in the evening.

The family gave Mothership.sg a CCTV video clip that showed a woman walking away carrying Lolo in her arms.

Announcements that Lolo has been missing have also been posted on several local websites.

Lolo is believed to have gone missing at Robin Road, most likely in the section opposite the staircase from YMCA and Balmoral Park. He is five years old and is around 35 cm in length. His microchip number ends in 3018, and according to the descriptions published about him, he has white fur, yellow eyes, and is wearing a tag with the address and phone number of the family that adopted him and brought him from overseas.

Anyone with information concerning Lolo is requested to call 8609-1678.

Mothership added that the family to whom Lolo belongs used to live in Dubai but moved to Singapore two years ago. When the family took Lolo in, he was malnourished and had several ailments including skin problems.

And even though they had already rescued a dog as well as three other cats, they adopted Lolo and took good care of him.

While Lolo is very much a family pet, he is also an outdoors cat who was allowed to go around freely on Robin Road and became familiar to the residents in the area, sticking to the compounds of three households and the car park for the past two years.

One place he would sit on often was the walls of the compound, where he was on the day he was last seen. He was perched on the lowest wall and could easily be reached by passers-by on the street.

According to the family, Lolo would not be taken for a community cat, since he had a tag clearly marked with the family’s address and telephone number just in case he gets lost.

“Lolo’s family said they miss him a lot, especially his blind, three-legged cat sister who still tries to look for him by sniffing around the house,” added Mothership. —/TISG

Fans react to photos of NCT’s Jungwoo smoking

It seems like another member of the K-pop mega group NCT is in hot soup! Jungwoo’s name has been trending on Twitter after photos of him smoking spread online recently.

The matter was met with polarising opinions from fans. There were those who said that as an idol, Jungwoo should set a good example for his younger, impressionable fans by not smoking, at least in public. Some fans also pointed out that smoking is simply bad for his health.

On the other hand, there were fans who defended the pop star. Here, they argued that he is allowed to do whatever he wants to do and he is old enough to make his own choices.

Other fans turned the serious situation into a funny one saying that it is hilarious how Jungwoo is known for his adorable appearance yet looks hot as a bad boy while smoking. Jungwoo is not the first member among the 23-member NCT to be caught in a sticky situation.

On 1st October, NCT member Lucas was caught accidentally flashing a cigarette box during an Instagram Live.

NCT is a South Korean boy group formed by SM Entertainment. Their name stands for the Hallyu localization project Neo Culture Technology, a term coined by their producer and SM founder Lee Soo-man to describe the group’s concept of having an unlimited number of members divided into multiple sub-units based in various cities worldwide.

Since the group’s initial introduction by their native label’s founder in January 2016, the group consists of 23 members as of September 2020, ranging from those in their late-teens to mid-twenties and participating in a total of four different sub-units.

The group introduced their first unit, the rotational NCT U, on April 9, 2016 with the double digital single “The 7th Sense” and “Without You”. It was followed by the Seoul-based unit NCT 127 on July 7, 2016 with their eponymous extended play and later the then-teenage only unit NCT Dream on August 24, 2016 with the digital single “Chewing Gum”. The group then introduced their first overseas localized sub-unit WayV, a seven-member unit based in China, on January 17, 2019 with the single album The Vision.`

Woman charged with breaching Stay-Home Notice to get bubble tea

0

Singapore — A 22-year-old woman who allegedly left her Woodlands Drive residence on March 23 while serving a Stay-Home Notice (SHN) to get bubble tea was charged on Friday (Dec 11).

Nurul Afiqah Mohammed, who arrived in Singapore from Australia on March 21, was supposed to be staying indoors during her SHN from March 21 to April 4. However, she is said to have gone out on multiple occasions, including once to Causeway Point to buy bubble tea. From there, she visited Nanyang Polytechnic, as reported by mothership.sg. on Friday.

The woman also allegedly went to Punggol Field on April 2 and 3 to help a friend with wedding preparations. Her friend’s household members were present at that time.

On April 12, Nurul Afiqah was admitted to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and tested positive for Covid-19, according to a straitstimes.com report. Her actions breaching the SHN exposed her friends and others to the virus.

She faced a total of seven charges under infectious disease regulations. The report mentioned that she is planning to plead guilty and will be back in court on Jan 22.

Nurul Afiqah was one of two Singaporeans charged with breaching their SHNs.

The other individual is 40-year-old Mohd Noor Salam bin Mohd Yusof, who arrived in Singapore from Malaysia on March 26 and was issued a two-week SHN from March 26 to  April 10.

Mohd Noor allegedly left his declared place of residence in Woodlands Street on March 31 to visit his mother’s home in Choa Chu Kang, taking public transport to get there. He also visited the area’s neighbourhood police centre that day. On April 2, he went to three different locations — Choa Chu Kang HDB Branch, Limbang Kopitiam and the vicinity of Limbang Shopping Centre.

Mohd Noor also intends to plead guilty. He will return to court on Jan 21.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) reminded members of the public to strictly comply with SHN requirements for the safety of the community. “The case of Nurul, who had tested positive for the virus, and had come into contact with her friends and members of the public during her Stay-Home Notice, shows the very real risk breaching Stay-Home Notice requirements can pose to all of us,” it said.

Failure to comply with SHN measures, such as those who tamper with or remove the electronic monitoring device during the period, is liable to prosecution. Violators can face a fine amounting up to S$10,000, imprisonment for six months, or both.

Foreigners who breach their SHN may face additional action by the ICA or the Ministry of Manpower and may have their permits and work passes shortened or revoked. /TISG
