PAP Minister promotes KF Seetoh’s latest Makansutra heritage food guide

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Edwin Tong, promoted renowned food guru KF Seetoh’s latest food guide, in a recent social media post.

Mr Seetoh is the founder of the long-running Makansutra food network which has produced heritage street food guides, international culinary tv shows and operated food markets over its 21-year history.

He has also been lauded by international publications like the New York Times and CNN and was recognised as Singapore’s Food Ambassador by former President SR Nathan.

Mr Seetoh has a reputation for speaking his mind, even though his views are contrary from that of the establishment. He has spoken up for hawkers and has urged the authorities to preserve Singapore’s hawker culture.

He also spoke out against schemes like the Government’s social enterprise hawker centre network and corporations that he feels are trying to profiteer from Singapore’s hawkers.

Mr Seetoh has openly praised opposition politicians and civil society activists and has not shied away from calling out ruling party politicians on issues like minimum wage.

Despite his outspoken nature, Mr Seetoh is well regarded by Singaporeans of all political persuasions – including People’s Action Party (PAP) politician Edwin Tong.

On Wednesday (9 Dec), Mr Tong met up with Mr Seetoh for breakfast and recounted their meeting on social media. He said: “Had breakfast with Kf Seetoh this morning to talk food (hawker of course), heritage, culture and most things makan(sutra!). So engrossed that we forgot to take a photo!”

Using Mr Seetoh’s famous “Die Die Must Try” line, Mr Tong promoted the 2021 edition of Mr Seetoh’s Makansutra heritage food guide that was recently launched. Calling the free e-book “brilliant,” Mr Tong urged his followers: “Check it out, for some of the best traditional, heritage and hawker street food. Totally local of course!”

79-year-old says she is collecting cardboard to pass time and get some exercise

A Singaporean senior citizen has said that she is primarily collecting cardboard to pass time and get exercise, after a photo of her went viral on social media this week.

Facebook user Vladimir Guevarra spotted the hunched senior citizen collecting cardboard when he was cycling along Eng Hoon Street in Tiong Bahru, sometime last week. Mr Guevarra saw a Porsche SUV reversing towards the elderly lady who was obliviously arranging her stack of cardboard.

The driver thankfully managed to stop before he collided into the woman but Mr Guevarra was disturbed by how the elderly lady was invisible to the luxury car driver. Revealing that he approached the woman to check on her and found that she looked very tired, the netizen said that the lady looked “too old” and shouldn’t be doing what she was doing.

Mr Guevarra posted a photo showing the woman behind the Porsche car on social media, which quickly went viral. Singaporeans expressing concern over the elderly cardboard collector, with prominent figures like distinguished diplomat Tommy Koh and actor-director Ivan Heng opining that the photo reflected inequality in Singapore.

Representatives of Mummy Yummy – a vegetarian hawker stall that provides aid to elderly cardboard collectors – tracked down the lady after two days of scouting Tiong Bahru.

Revealing that the woman is a 79-year-old called Mdm Cha, Mummy Yummy said on Facebook on Wednesday (9 Dec) that the woman told them that she is collecting cardboard “to pass time and exercise while getting a small income from it.”

Mdm Cha said that she is cared for by her son and that she does not need help from social service agencies. She said that her son is helping her manage the money she gets from the Silver Support scheme every quarter “so that she can be free from monetary hassles and live her carefree golden age.”

She added that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s staff often checked up on her wellbeing, during her conversation with Yummy Mummy.

Mummy Yummy tried to talk Mdm Cha out of cardboard collecting but she was resolute to continue doing so. The group ultimately compromised with her to be more careful about her health and road safety and said,

“She has happily agreed she will look left, look right and look again to see if there’s any cars or lorries coming before moving off with the loads to ensure her safety while doing her stuffs and go home safely to her son daily.”

The group added: “We encourage everyone to help and push her trolley whenever you guys see her especially on the roads. It will cut down her time moving around with the loads and it shouldn’t take you more than 30mins to do that. Thanks!”

Concerned citizen asks why cardboard collecting is considered a recreational activity for the elderly

A concerned citizen has asked why cardboard collecting is seen as a recreational activity for senior citizens, after his motives for posting a viral photo of an elderly woman collecting cardboard was questioned by some online.

Facebook user Vladimir Guevarra spotted the hunched senior citizen collecting cardboard when he was cycling along Eng Hoon Street in Tiong Bahru, on 26 Nov.

He added that he gave the woman the cash he had with him and urged her to have her dinner. Highlighting the woman’s plight on social media, Mr Guevarra posted a photo online, showing the frail woman and her tall pile of cardboard behind the Porsche car.

The photo quickly went viral and Singaporeans expressed concern over the elderly cardboard collector. Prominent figures like distinguished diplomat Tommy Koh and actor-director Ivan Heng were among those who felt that the photo reflected inequality in Singapore, while others lauded Mr Guevarra for his kindheartedness.

Some online, however, criticised Mr Guevarra for not letting the woman be since cardboard collecting could be her preferred form of exercise.

Interestingly, the senior citizen later did say that she saw cardboard collecting as a way to pass time and get exercise. She added that she did not need any social service help since her son is taking care of her.

In a Facebook post published on Thursday (10 Dec), Mr Guevarra said: “Now, if my memory serves me well – and these are details I did not share in the original post – that was a rainy afternoon on Nov 26. It was still drizzling when I cycled on my way to group bootcamp. The picture shows puddles on the road.

“I could be wrong in asking this, but looking at the high stack of cardboards collected by the lady, what are the chances that she was working on the streets while it was raining, or at least, drizzling? Wasn’t the road too dangerous and slippery?”

Highlighting how physically demanding cardboard collecting can be, he questioned: “Are you guys telling me that septuagenarians and octogenarians, in their declining health, would very much rather bend, pick, lift, and push, repeatedly, sometimes under the heat of the sun, sometimes in the rain or drizzle, maneuvering through vehicular traffic, rather than stay home during COVID, read books, or play with or teach their grandchildren?”

Mr Guevarra was also concerned that cardboard collecting was seen as a recreational activity by some people and asked about the availability of other recreational programmes for senior citizens:

“As for pastimes or exercises, wouldn’t it be better and safer for the elderly to, say, volunteer at their community centre, attend courses, learn new hobbies, or do some brisk walking or stretching with some assistance or supervision?

“Can our elderly afford these, are there enough programs for them, or do they simply feel that they don’t have the choice?”

The netizen asked his detractors: “How would you want it for your own parents or grandparents? How would you want it for yourself when you hit your 70s? If you have close relatives in their 70s or 80s, could you ask them? Because I have a feeling we all know the preferred answer.”

A small minority of people online also accused Mr Guevarra of trying to make himself look good by publishing his first post.

Mr Guevarra said that the intention behind his post was to raise awareness and rally support for the elderly lady. He added that he took the photo after he checked on the lady since he found the contrasting image of an old lady eking out a living beside a luxury car “jarring”.

It took Mr Guevarra over 10 days to contemplate whether making the post was worth the risk of some ridiculing him for virtue-signalling but he ultimately decided to publish the post to raise important issues like the importance of caring for the elderly and the divide between rich and poor.

He said: “In the end, I was willing to take the risk of being ridiculed if it meant that the message could reach even just one person. That is more important. Turns out the message is reaching more people.”

Gary Cohn giving to charity to resolve Goldman 1MDB impasse

0

Former Goldman Sachs president Gary Cohn will donate to charity rather than return past earnings that the company sought to reclaim after the 1MDB Malaysian bribery scandal, Goldman said Thursday.

The investment bank in October announced a plan to claw back compensation from former and current bank executives following a $2.9 billion criminal settlement with the Justice Department over the massive international scandal.

The bank said it was seeking some $174 million from a group of current and former bank leaders because of their role in “institutional failure” at Goldman, even though the executives were not involved in “any illicit activity,” the bank said in October.

But Cohn, who served as a White House economic advisor in the first two years of the Trump administration after leaving Goldman, resisted returning the funds.

Bloomberg News reported Thursday that Goldman had sought more than $10 million in back compensation from Cohn, but it was not clear if he planned to donate that entire sum. The report said he was giving month to charities that work in pandemic relief and social justice.

Goldman applauded the move.

“We are pleased that Gary has chosen to support charitable organizations that are doing important work and put this matter behind us,” a Goldman spokeswoman said.

Nestle temporarily halts Milo sale in Japan after health benefit viral post sparks buying frenzy

PETALING JAYA, Dec. 10 — Nestle Japan has temporarily halted the sale of Milo after viral tweets caused demand to skyrocket beyond the company’s production capacity.

The malt chocolate beverage is a perennial favourite in Southeast Asia and it recently gained popularity in Japan after Twitter posts from the summer raving about the drink caught Japanese people’s attention.

A viral tweet by Twitter user @ren_3 said that drinking Milo helped her feel less fatigued and made it easier for her to get out of bed in the morning.

“One month after I started drinking Milo every morning, I feel much better waking up.

“My body used to feel tired 24 hours a day and I lacked the motivation to do anything, but now I feel refreshed,” said @ren_3.

She added that these symptoms were due to anaemia and she claimed that the iron content in Milo helped alleviate her condition.

Her glowing review has been retweeted over 32,400 times and gained over 92,600 likes since it was posted on August 4.

Another tweet by @koroku6_ from July had even more to say about Milo’s purported health benefits, claiming that drinking it would mean, “no more dizziness, better bladder health, no daytime sleepiness, improved skin, mental stability, and no more hunger pangs.”

The post gained over 11,800 retweets and 31,300 likes and sparked fervent curiosity amongst Japanese people about the beverage.

As a result, Milo began flying off the shelves in Japanese supermarkets and the Mainichi reports that Nestle Japan is fielding seven times the orders of Milo compared to the same period in 2019.

Nestle Japan imports ingredients from Singapore to make the beverage powder but was forced to suspend sales of the 240g, 700g, and five-stick Milo Original variants as supply wasn’t enough to meet the surge in demand.

The company is currently working on establishing an improved supply framework and Milo sales in Japan are expected to resume in March 2021 at the earliest.

Victoria Beckham praises Brooklyn’s fiancée Nicola Peltz

0

Fashion designer and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham praised her son Brooklyn’s fianceé Nicola Peltz as she shared about their upcoming wedding in an interview on Wednesday’s Lorraine.

The 46-year-old, whose son, 21 proposed to the American actress, 25, in July spoke about their relationship as she said their engagement came at a ‘nice’ time. Speaking to Mark Heyes from her office, Posh Spice gushed: ”We couldn’t have asked for him to meet a more adorable lady!’

Brooklyn and Nicola, who have been dating for over a year have been inseparable ever since they went public about their relationship last November.

Shedding light on their bond in a rare discussion, businesswoman Victoria said: ‘They’re so happy. She’s wonderful, sweet and kind. She’s such a lovely, warm woman. We couldn’t have asked for Brooklyn to meet a more adorable lady.

‘It’s nice with everything that has gone on this year that Brooklyn has found his soulmate and the lady he wants to spend the rest of his life with.

‘During this time there’s been so much uncertainty and that everything felt a little bit sad. So we are very happy and very excited.’

The entrepreneur, who also shares children Romeo, 18, Cruz, 15, and Harper, nine, with her husband David, 45, admitted she hasn’t found an outfit for their nuptials – reported to be scheduled for 2022 – as she asked: ‘What will I wear?!

‘Everyone remembers Brooklyn being a little boy at David’s Manchester United game and now he’s a 21 year old man.’

Elsewhere in the interview, the musician gave insight into Christmas with the Beckhams.

Sharing that her husband David is a big fan of the festive season, the mother-of-four  explained: ‘ Posh is back! Merry Christmas, where has the time gone?

‘Lockdown has been hard so it’s been great spending time as a family and to have Christmas is going to be great.

‘I don’t know who is more excited, the kids or David! We’ve had Christmas music playing in the Beckham house for about a month and a half!

‘Victoria Beckham is not as difficult to buy for as Mr Beckham. If he wants something, he’ll just go and get it. We love PJs , slippers.’

When asked about whether the famous family dress up for the big day, Victoria explained: ‘We have matching Beckham Christmas PJs – a little monogram with our names on.’

The media personality also poked fun at her cooking skills as she added: ‘They want to enjoy Christmas, Mark! My culinary skills are not great. David is the chef.’

Victoria had no choice but to hold a virtual London Fashion Week show to present her S/S 2021 collection amid the coronavirus pandemic in September.

The Wannabe hitmaker recalled: ‘It was a very different process as we couldn’t have people come. The only guests I had were my family.

‘I always embrace change and I think COVID-19 has changed us all in so many ways. I’m embracing the challenges that it has thrown, not just me, but the entire industry.

‘It was lovely to all be together but it’s been so challenging for everyone. I’ve missed not spending time with my parents and David’s parents, but hopefully that’ll change soon. It’s about looking into the future.’

The singer launched her eponymous beauty line after years of maintaining a successful fashion brand.

Teasing details about her new Posh lipstick, Victoria said: ‘For me, lipstick is everything. I’m very much about a smokey eye and a perfect nude lip.

‘It’s very hard to find the perfect nude, I wanted to be inclusive. I wanted to have a strong focus on clean beauty. I wanted to be true to me, I’ll always be Posh. I’ve been mastering that pout!’

Victoria was left elated as Lorraine correspondent Mark gifted her and her daughter a Fashion Wheel for Christmas.

Admitting she’s happier about the present than her mini-me, the fashion icon joked: ‘OMG, Harper is going to love this… No matter about Harper, I love this! Also, say hello to Lorraine for me. I can see her wearing Posh!’

Alverna Cher Sheue Pin, City Funeral Singapore Director, Faces Court: Charged in Ex-Boyfriend’s Death – Latest Update

Singapore—Alverna Cher Sheue Pin, director of City Funeral Singapore, who was charged on Dec. 3 with the death of her former boyfriend, appeared before the court with her new pro-bono lawyers on Dec 10 (Thursday).

According to a CNA report, Ms. Alverna Cher Sheue Pin, 38, has been remanded further for additional investigations, which the judge granted at the request of the prosecutor, who cited the “complexity of the charge” against Ms. Cher.

The single mother of two girls, who has been charged with one count of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, was accused of committing an unspecified act that resulted in the death of Wee Jun Xiang, 32, on May 16 between 1.44 pm and 5.15 pm at Deck 4B of the multi-story car park at Block 145A Bedok Reservoir Road.

According to the charge sheet, Ms. Alverna Cher Sheue Pin intended to cause the demise of her former partner, reported CNA.

The defendant was accompanied by her new lawyers, who are representing her pro-bono.

Messrs Josephus Tan, Marshall Lim, and Cory Wong from Invictus Law are taking over Ms Cher’s case.

District Judge Terence Tay did not object when the prosecutor applied for an additional week of remand for Ms Cher in order for more investigations to be carried out for discovering evidence.

CNA quotes Judge Tay as saying, “This is the second application for remand for investigations. I’m allowing it on the basis of the complexity of the charge involved.”

Mr. Wee, a composer who also went by the name Sean and who released a single in Mandarin called “You Are Gone” in March, was reported by the Chinese-language media to have suddenly died of a heart attack.

His family claimed that at the time of his death, he was working from home, as Singapore was still under Circuit Breaker restrictions to prevent the spread of Covid-19 infections.

Ms. Alverna Cher Sheue Pin runs City Funeral Singapore Pte Ltd and has two daughters, aged six and 13. According to a report from TODAY, she took over the business from the father of her younger child, who had gone to jail just after Ms. Cher had given birth, one month after it was founded.

She is divorced from the father of her older daughter.

City Funeral Singapore had also been part of the funeral of actor Aloysuis Pang, who died in an accident during reservist training for the Singapore Army early in 2019.

Ms. Alverna Cher Sheue Pinr previously worked in recruitment and as an education coach.

If Ms. Alverna Cher Sheue Pin is convicted of culpable homicide, she could receive a life sentence, or a fine and a jail term of as long as 20 years. If she were male, she could have received a caning as well.

She is due back in court on Dec 17. —/TISG

Airbnb doubles in US market debut, gaining elite status

0

by Juliette MICHEL

Airbnb shares more than doubled in a sizzling US market debut Thursday which vaulted the home-sharing platform into an elite group of richly valued companies.

Shares opened at $146, a dizzying rise after the San Francisco-based firm priced them at $68 for its initial public offering.

They closed at $144.71, a jump of 113 percent in the market debut.

At those levels Airbnb is worth more than $100 billion, including options and restricted shares, up from the bumped-up $47 billion at the IPO price.

That puts the 13-year-old company on par with major global firms such as IBM, 3M Corp and American Express, for example.

Airbnb raised some $3.4 billion in the offering amid a feverish rush for new shares in companies adapting to lifestyle changes imposed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The company listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol “ABNB.”

Gregori Volokhine, portfolio manager at Meeschaert Financial Services, said interest in Airbnb was high because “investors have the impression that this is the birth of a new platform, a company that can completely disrupt the world of tourism.”

The Airbnb debut comes just a day after meal delivery group DoorDash’s spectacular Wall Street entry with a jump of 75 percent in its first day of trading.

DoorDash made its debut with a lofty $39 billion valuation, on the heels of IPOs from others in the tech sector and on-demand economy which point to frenzied demand for the stocks.

Airbnb has said its home-sharing model proved resilient during the global pandemic, as it posted a profit of $219 million for the just-ended quarter.

The 13-year-old company, valued at $31 billion in its latest private funding round, is confident it will thrive over time.

“We believe that as the world recovers from this pandemic, Airbnb will be a vital source of economic empowerment for millions of people,” it said in its IPO filing.

‘Changing dynamic’
Airbnb recently implemented new safety protocols for many of its hosts and maintains that listings meeting its upgraded guidelines are safer than hotels during the pandemic.

The platform now has more than four million listings in countries around the world and has served more than 825 million bookings.

New Constructs research firm said Airbnb “has a plausible path to profitability and growth” if it can contain costs while expanding its global footprint.

Airbnb and DoorDash stock market debuts this week are part of a “unicorn parade” capping a busy year for hot startups going public.

Unicorn startups — valued in the billions — are poised to take advantage of a market hungry for young businesses promising fast growth, with some capitalizing on lifestyle changes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

There have been 420 IPOs on US markets so far this year, some 88 percent more that at this point a year earlier, according to StockAnalysis.com.

Snowflake, a cloud storage computing firm which listed earlier this year, has seen its valuation surge to over $100 billion in what some analysts say is a sign of a new tech bubble.

A key question is whether these emerging firms represent the future or are just a flash in the pan.

Some analysts say the pandemic has distorted the economy and that it’s too soon to know how the firms will fare.

Utility room for rent in Singapore’s Boon Keng sparks online debate: Prime real estate or closet space?

Singapore—Well, we knew that tiny living spaces were a trend, and that prime real estate in Singapore is expensive, but a utility room at Boon Keng for S$500 a month had some netizens scratching and shaking their heads.

Photos of the minuscule room for rent were posted on the Property/Rooms For Rent/Sale Singapore Facebook group. The images showed a space barely large enough for a single bed, leading to a wave of online comments ranging from disbelief to bewilderment. Some were left wondering if the Boon Keng room rental was intended for storing luggage rather than accommodating people.

But, since the internet is the place where nothing ever dies, one netizen re-posted some of the photos on the Malaysia-Singapore Border Crossers Facebook page. And, in fairness, the ad does say “Boon Keng Condo Utility room for rental,” showing a space just big enough to contain a single bed and literally nothing else, with almost every part of the bed touching the room’s walls — quite representative of Singapore’s tiny living spaces.

The only other item in the room is a wall-mounted electric fan.

However, according to AsiaOne, at least the original listing said that the private toilet was only a few meters away. And, adding to its advantages, the room is only a five-minute walk from the Boon Keng MRT station.

Netizens, however, wasted no time in roasting the original poster.

They called it as they saw it. “Store room ker,” one wrote.

Others called it smaller than a jail cell.

Some joked that Singapore might soon become like Hong Kong, where some live in very cramped spaces.

The post on the Malaysia-Singapore Border Crossers Facebook page has since gone viral, with over 1,800 shares.

The condominium building where the room is found is called Eight Riversuites, which is located at Whampoa East, 338517, Balestier/Toa Payoh (D12), which actually looks quite nice when you check out its photos.

According to propertyguru.com.sg, units at Eight Riversuites are priced between S$710,000 and  S$3,080,000 and the rental price range is between S$850 and S$5,500.

So maybe the utility room at S$500 a month is a steal, after all.

K Shanmugam shares ‘heartfelt’ letter from former cannabis user

Singapore—The country’s Law and Home Affairs Minister, K. Shanmugam, strengthened his argument on the harmfulness of cannabis by posting a “heartfelt, sincere, powerful” email from a former user of the drug, who has since gotten drug-free.

Mr Shanmugam obtained the consent of “R” to share an email he had received from him and posted it on Facebook on Thursday morning (Dec 10).

FB screengrab: K Shanmugam SC

“R”, who identified himself in his email to Mr Shanmugam as a young Singaporean from Nee Soon, had actually written to the minister from his bed at Singapore General Hospital as he was in recovery.

He had seen an article in CNA wherein the Minister had expressed his perspective on the decision of the United Nations to remove cannabis from the most tightly controlled category of narcotic drugs, as well as a video on Facebook wherein Assoc Prof Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Minister of State at the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of National development, also spoke to a former addict who had begun with using cannabis.

CNA quoted Mr Shanmugam as saying, “I put this down to the power of money. Companies see a huge amount of profit and a very invidious idea that cannabis is not harmful is being pushed. But the evidence that it is harmful is quite substantive.”

“R” went on to say that he, like many others, had once believed marijuana was “harmless and cool,” but it had proved to be a gateway for him “to the world of drugs and other abusive substances.”

He later called it a “global phenomenon” wherein many people from different nations think marijuana is harmless and that consuming it is “natural.”

R also excessed concern over the term “Medical Marijuana” which he says is “widespread in some parts of the world” and adds confusion. “THC and CBD are totally two different things,” he added.

And when he changed his mind about marijuana, he hardly relapsed into drugs, and with support, he has been able to get healthy again.

He thanked the Minister for keeping Singapore safe from drugs and suggested an initiative to educate the youth concerning the “ideology” of drugs being cool, adding that he would not mind sharing his own personal experiences “to influence the youth at risk to have a strong will against drugs and other harmful substances.”

The Minister wrote in his post, “Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) – the two main components of cannabis – are ‘totally different things’.

THC has psychoactive effects. It is established to be addictive and harmful.

CBD is non-psychoactive. It is the component that some researchers say has medical purposes.

CBD can be isolated, and synthesized. You don’t need THC, you don’t need to take raw Cannabis.

Why then are drug companies pushing to legalise raw cannabis, which also contains the harmful THC? And pushing for recreational use of raw Cannabis. This is cynical, knowing that the public will be harmed – being done for profit.”
