A handbag by Lee Suet Fern again prompts stylistic comparisons with Ho Ching

0

Singapore — With Lee Suet Fern and Ho Ching being daughters-in-law of the late Lee Kuan Yew and Madam Kwa Geok Choo, netizens seem to find it irresistible to compare the two.

The latest episode sees a handbag featured in a Facebook post, in which the younger Lee scion describes his wife Lee Suet Fern’s “latest piece of craftsmanship”. It seemed inevitable that netizens would compare this handbag to the one carried by Madam Ho.

In the caption accompanying the photo, Mr Lee Hsien-Yang writes: “My wife besides learning to make dresses, has also been improving her bag making skills”.

His wife, Mrs Lee Suet Fern, has also shown off  her handmade quilts, as well as masks, bowties and quilted handbags.

Just like Mrs Lee, Madam Ho has also been in the spotlight for her bags. The first one that caught the attention of social media was a simple blue-and-white dinosaur motif pouch. Madam Ho was seen with that pouch at the arrival ceremony at the White House South Lawn. Priced at just $11, the pouch was designed by a student at Pathlight School, which specialises in teaching children on the autism spectrum.

While some praised Madam Ho was praised for the simplicity of her bag choice, she also drew criticism online over her choice of outfit, with netizens quick to jump on how Madam Ho’s outfit was no match for the “bright yellow floral dress” worn by the then US First Lady Micheale Obama.

Among the critics was aesthetics doctor and Save our Street Dogs founder, Dr Siew Tuck Wah, who commented:

“Its a historic occasion for Singapore Prime minister Lee and wife Ho Ching to be invited to the White House. But while first lady Michelle Obama made headlines with a Naeem Khan bright yellow floral dress, Ho Ching really could have chose something, well, more cheery.”

He added: “We need to get a stylist for her please.”

Mr Lee Hsien-Yang’s post on his wife’s handicraft skills inspired several negative remarks on Madam Ho, who is the wife of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

In March 2020, photos of Mrs Lee’s handbag were shared by a local Facebook page dedicated to quilting called 2Quilters.

Guess

Guess  the younger woman has totally bagged it. That prompted her fellow quilter to caption the photo thus:  “Local quilter, Lee Suet Fern, sent us pictures of her beautiful projects made with ByAnnie products. This is her taupe and green version of the Bowl Me Over bag using ByAnnie’s Soft and Stable foam stabilizer and Lightweight Mesh Fabric from ByAnnie”.

“We love the quilting she has done with her HandiQuilter Infinity long-arm machine for the panels and that gives the bag such a special touch. Fern’s speed at completing her sewing projects never ceases to amaze us”, they added. /TISG

President Halimah makes case for low-wage workers to be better paid after man spurns Covid test

He declined to be tested because he did not want to lose that extra $100  monthly attendance allowance he received for showing up punctually for work and not taking sick leave. Instead, Rahim continued to work and potentially exposed others to Covid.

When the bright sunlight  began to overwhelm his vision, he said in retrospect, he should have maintained a safe distance behind the van he was following.

At one point, he holds up his left hand to help him see better.

But then he notices that the van swerved into another lane

This sudden change caught him unaware. As it turned out, the van shifted lanes to avoid a lorry in front of it, parked on the side of the road.

Luqman was not quite as lucky.

The jarring impact of slamming into the back of the large vehicle is clearly seen, even felt, and the rider’s camera goes sideways as he falls to the ground.

To make matters worse, he ended up getting hit on the head by a taxi.

He then questions why three “huge” trucks should be parked on the right side of the road to begin with.

“I have no idea,” Luqman added.

Fortunately, several good samaritans passing by who helped him out, and  he thanks them in his video.

“Remember to recite your prayers when on the road. Pay close attention to those sharing the road,” he admonished motorists and riders.

“Sometimes the danger may not be on the ground but elsewhere too.”

His future, at this point, seems to be up in the air.

“Will I continue to be riding on the road?

We’ll see.”

Netizens wished him a speedy recovery, as he suffered considerable injuries, including losing his teeth and breaking a finger.

Singapore — A rather daring Myna bird decided to take a quick stretch break on the bonnet of a car last Friday (Jan 14).

The bird, which sat on former National Coach Ghana Segaran’s car last Friday evening, did so for about six minutes before it made its way off. Mr Ghana told TISG that as he was driving, he stopped at the Sengkang Riverside Park to take a call. The car had stopped, but the engine was still running, with the radio still on, when the bird decided to hop on.

“I was quite surprised”, said Mr Ghana, 67.

“My car engine was switched on, yet the bird did not fly away. It was sitting there (on the bonnet) and looking around and at me”, he said.

He also noted that the bird did not seem to be injured in any way. Even when a car passed by and stopped in front of his car, it maintained its position, even stopping to stretch at one point.

In videos taken by Mr Ghana, the Myna could be seen looking around at first, even pausing to look at him at one point.

After it made its checks, it sat on the bonnet and stretched its wings before flying off after a while, said Mr Ghana. He joked that the bird probably was trying to hitch a ride somewhere.

Last week, on Monday (Jan 10), a man took to Facebook group Singapore Wildlife Sightings to share about a pigeon that landed on the bonnet of his moving car. The unbothered pigeon even stayed on throughout the duration of the video, hitching a ride from North Bridge Road to Clarke Quay. /TISG

President Halimah makes case for low-wage workers to be better paid after man spurns Covid test

Singapore — President Halimah Yacob weighed in on the case of a worker who refused a swab test even though he had Covid-19 symptoms.

A. Rahim M. Taha,  a pest control technician, had been coughing for three weeks when he went to Yishun Polyclinic in October 2020 and was told he needed to get a PCR test and would have to stay home to wait for the results.

He declined to be tested because he did not want to lose that extra $100  monthly attendance allowance he received for showing up punctually for work and not taking sick leave. Instead, Rahim continued to work and potentially exposed others to Covid.

President Halimah called his actions “without a doubt irresponsible” but understood his plight. As she said in a much-shared Jan 18 Facebook post,  his case “also highlights another common employment practice that can be detrimental to workers” because it incentivises workers to continue to report for their duties even when they are ill.

“The real solution is to make sure that low-wage workers are paid better so that they don’t have to depend on such incentives to survive,” MAdAm Halimah said

“For companies that pay such an attendance allowance, what they wish to deter is abuse of sick leave and not penalise those who are genuinely sick by depriving them of the payment.”

Given the current pandemic, she said, it is “not fair” that workers be deprived of their attendance allowance if they are required to absent themselves because of Covid, or have to wait for test results to see if they are positive or not.

“Employers should make this clear to workers,” she added.

Rahim, now 60,  had pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one charge of flouting Covid-19 rules and received a five-week jail sentence.

The Straits Times and other news media reported that the pest control technician earns around $1,500 monthly. He would get an additional $100 each month for being punctual and for not taking any medical leave.

Commenting on Madam Halimah’s post, many netizens thanked her for standing up for low-wage workers.

One commenter quoted a line from Spider-Man about those who have great powers:

Eddie Peng quashes gay rumours again, receives apology from China tech firm for failing to stop gossip

Actor Eddie Peng recently won a victory of sorts after a Beijing tech firm issued an apology for allowing rumours about his sexuality to be spread on its social media site.

This is hardly the first time that the Taiwan-born Canadian actor, singer and model, 39, has debunked rumours that he’s gay.

In January of last year, rumours spread that he was dating 36-year-old Taiwanese singer and actor Danson Tang.

In response to the gossip back then, Peng’s label issued a statement on Chinese platform Weibo that the rumour had “seriously damaged his rights and interests.”

It also warned that legal action would be taken against those who circulated these rumours regarding Peng and asked for the false information to be deleted.

Peng expressed his ire in a Weibo post as well, writing, “Fake. Lame. Rotten to the core.”

Photo: IG screengrab/yuyanpeng

More recently, Eddie Peng Studio posted a letter on Weibo from Zhong Lun Law Firm to announce that legal action had been taken against Beijing Fenmo Technology, the parent company of social media app, Fenhei, because Fenmo had not stopped rumours about Peng’s sexuality from circulating on the app.

The studio added that Fenmo had issued a letter of apology, which was published in a Chinese newspaper.

A screenshot of the apology was also posted on Weibo.

The studio also acknowledged and thanked “every friend who gave their care and support”, 8days reported.

Peng also faced rumours that he’s gay in 2017 when gossip circulated that Peng was in a same-sex relationship with Zhang Lei, a Chinese venture capitalist. The news was later proven to be false.

Born on March 24, 1982, the actor began his career when he was cast as in Tomorrow by director Yang Daqing during a summer vacation in Taiwan in 2002. The drama was adapted from the Japanese manga series Asunaro Hakusho, written by Fumi Saimon.

Peng built a teenage fan following after the romantic comedy gained popularity.

In 2003, he had his first leading role in the Taiwanese drama Scent of Love, which tells the story of star-crossed lovers who transcend life and death to find one another in their many reincarnations.

In 2005, he starred in the drama When Dolphin Met Cat, playing an autistic youth. To prepare himself for the filming, Peng took one month to learn how to interact with dolphins from a trained instructor. He then starred in Chinese xianxia drama Chinese Paladin and wuxia drama The Young Warriors, which were extremely popular during their run and led to increased recognition for him in the Mainland. /TISG

Judge convicts male cabin crew who claimed he tapped stewardess’ buttocks to ‘correct her posture’

Singapore — It may have looked like a classic case of “she said vs he said,” but the judge came down in favour of the woman, and found the man guilty of a molestation charge.

The woman’s identity, as well as which carrier was involved in the incident, has not been disclosed.

It is also unknown whether the man is still employed by the carrier.

On a flight from Singapore to Manila, Philippines, on May 3, 2019, a stewardess, now 27, who had bent down to assist a passenger was suddenly surprised when the senior flight steward, to whom she immediately reported, smacked her on her right buttock.

As she was in shock, she did not confront the man right away, but upon reaching the galley, she told one of her superiors what the man, who was the highest-ranking cabin crew member on the flight, had done.

She filed a complaint on May 5, 2019, after the plane returned to Singapore.

The court heard that the man apologised to the stewardess during the turnaround flight, telling her he had “no intention to do it”.

However, he could not give a straight answer when she asked him what his intention had been.

And while the man told the court he had merely “tapped” the woman’s buttock in an effort to “correct her posture”, District Judge Ng Peng Hong convicted the man, now 50, of one charge of using criminal force intended to outrage the victim’s modesty.

He will return for sentencing in March. He faces a jail term of up to two years, a fine, caning, or a combination of the three.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lee Wei Liang said that the incident occurred around half an hour before the plane was due to land in Manila after the captain had asked the cabin crew to get ready for landing.

The stewardess was, at that time, helping a passenger in business class.

In the woman’s words, she was standing near the passenger with her “knees slightly bent, upper body slightly leaning forward… (and) perhaps, tilted a bit towards the chair,” The Straits Times reports.

“The victim recounted that as she was attending to the passenger and standing in the manner described, she felt a ‘smack’ on her right buttock, and her body ‘jolted up’ in reaction to the contact,” said DPP Lee.

He added that the woman had characterised how he struck her as a “smack” because of the “hard and surprising” contact she felt on her skin.

The senior flight steward also made a comment in a “cheeky or playful manner” on the way the woman stood.

At the trial, the man refuted her version of events, saying he did not touch nor slap her buttocks, but merely “tapped” her after seeing she leaned against a seat and that her buttocks were “protruding” into the aisle.

DPP Lee added, “He described the victim’s posture as ‘provocative’ and claimed to have touched the victim to correct her posture.

“There is no reason why he would admit to something he did not do, when so much was at stake. When confronted with the victim’s allegation in the cockpit, he provided no defence for his actions. This is not the conduct of an innocent person,” TODAY reported the DPP as saying.

Trailer truck topples over after driver fails to turn at Bedok Reservoir View roundabout

Singapore — A trailer truck was spotted toppled over at a roundabout along Bedok Reservoir View on Monday (Jan 17), sparking comments from concerned individuals that the area needs to be improved for road users.

According to Facebook page ROADS.sg, “The driver was trying to manoeuvre slowly around the roundabout but failed. One of the back wheels went up the curb, causing the trailer to lean towards the left and toppled over.”

There were no reported injuries due to the incident.

A netizen shared in a comment that he was about two cars behind the trailer when the accident happened.

“Few seconds prior, a motorcyclist actually overtook the trailer from the left. Luckily he went off before the trailer topped over.”

The concerned individual suspected that the trailer made a wrong turn into the Bedok Reservoir View from the construction site along Bedok Reservoir Road while intending to turn into Bedok North Ave 3 at the next junction instead.

Given that Bedok Reservoir View is a short two-lane street, the only way for the trailer was to u-turn through the roundabout, which is not ideal for such situations.

Netizens also said, “it’s about time” to review the area and create a second entry or exit point for the estate.

“The relevant agencies should seriously look into how to improve this stretch of road by opening up alternative roads. Currently, there is only one way in and out without other routes,” said a Facebook user.

Perhaps open another entrance and exit near Blk 761 perpendicular to Bedok North Ave 3 in case of any major disruption like what happened today. The entire road was completely paralysed, and all vehicles came to a complete halt.

He illustrated that in the worst scenario if a fire broke out or lives were at stake, “how would fire trucks or ambulances reach the site given the major obstruction.”

Tan Kiat How, the Minister of State at the Ministry of National Development and Member of Parliament representing Kampong Chai Chee, noted in a Facebook post on Monday that one of the cranes used to lift the container truck malfunctioned, resulting in a delay in clearing the affected area.

“Thanks, everyone, for your patience, and to our Traffic Police officers from Singapore Police Force for managing the ground situation,” he added.

Facebook page Our Kampong Chai Chee said in an update that one lane was opened up for traffic at 10:50 pm on Monday. /TISG

Soh Rui Yong’s offers to drop lawsuit against Malik Aljunied mid-trial, but the ex-SA director rejects it

Singapore — National marathoner Soh Rui Yong offered to drop the 2019 defamation lawsuit he filed against Malik Aljunied mid-trial on Monday (Jan 17), but this was rejected by the former Singapore Athletics (SA) executive director.

Mr Gerard Quek, the lawyer for the runner, had been instructed by Soh, 30, to put it on record “to resolve the matter,” he said on Monday, the fifth day of the trial.

Mr Malik did not at once accept or reject the offer, which only stood for one day when it was first given.

However, Mr Mahmood Gaznavi, who is Mr Malik’s lawyer, told The Straits Times (ST) at the day’s end that the offer would be rejected.

On Aug 19, 2019, Roh’s lawyers issued a Letter of Demand for Defamation to Mr Malik due to a Facebook post he had put up.

The former SA director had posted a photo of himself holding two children, whom he hoped would one day run in the 400m hurdles event. He wrote that they should be careful of the marathon because this could “end up messing up with your mind and heart.”

Additionally, in a comment, Mr Malik wrote about “one particular runner” whom he did not name, but whom he wrote had a “messed up sense of logic and reason beyond repair,” for whom he felt “really sorry.”

And in a further comment, he said “it seemed to have drained him of empathy, compassion, gratitude, and the capability to love others…”

The Aug 2019 letter sent from Clarence Lun, Mr Soh’s lawyer, said that Mr Malik could only be referring to Mr Soh in the Facebook post.

Mr Malik said at the trial last Friday (Jan 14) that he took down the post after around 15 hours as it had not been “in good taste.”

On Jan 17, Mr Quek said that the runner is “satisfied with the concessions made by (Malik) on the stand on Friday” and “feels in his own way vindicated”.

Soh’s lawyer added that the marathoner believes that continuing with the lawsuit is “not necessary or good for the sport” and that he does not want prominent sports figures, who are witnesses for Mr Malik and for whom Soh says he has much respect, to have to go “through the unpleasant experience of cross-examination”.

However, the offer to withdraw the suit should not be perceived as an admission that Soh’s case is weak.

“In fact my client believes his claim has been strengthened,” the lawyer added.

Had Mr Malik agreed to Soh’s offer, this would have meant the lawsuit would discontinue within five days of the former SA executive director’s acceptance of the offer, with both parties agreeing no order for costs. /TISG
