‘Look! Such an inconsiderate act!’ — Woman shakes rug over balcony in Yishun

Singapore — A woman was caught on camera shaking her rug over a balcony to clean it, sparking criticisms among netizens over the ‘selfish’ action.

“Look! Such an inconsiderate act!” wrote a concerned individual on Complaint Singapore Facebook page.

The video began with the woman leaning over her balcony ledge while holding a rug. She shook the rug repeatedly.

She then overturned the mat and shook it against the building façade before hanging it over the ledge along with the others.

The woman proceeded to pick more debris that was still stuck on the rug and flicked them in the air.

According to the post, the incident happened at The Miltonia Residences Condominium located in Yishun.

Members from the online community advised the original poster to report the “selfish” incident to the National Environment Agency (NEA).

Others wondered why the woman didn’t have a vacuum to do the cleaning.

“Electricity is expensive vacuum also expensive. Old school method five fingers hahahaha,” a netizen commented.

Meanwhile, a Facebook user said, “Someone on the above unit should also do the same act at the same time. This way this lady will knows how it feels to get dirt on her and her unit,” however, another replied this would not solve the problem.

Having inconsiderate neighbours is a common topic among residents, with social media posts of such behaviour going viral.

Another example of such a case was when a Complaint Singapore member shared a photo of their Housing and Development Board trash chute area in December last year.

Due to the multiple bulky items not being properly discarded, the rubbish chute got blocked and ended up looking like a study area.

“I understand if sometimes you have a lot of things to throw and it is tiring to move it downstairs. But I don’t understand why you have to completely block the chute,” the concerned resident added. /TISG

Moving on after Raeesah Khan scandal, WP MPs to hold first Sengkang town hall on Jan 22

Singapore — Workers’ Party Members of Parliament He Ting Ru, Jamus Lim, and Louis Chua will be holding the first town hall at Sengkang GRC on Jan 22 after the resignation of Raeesah Khan, who stepped down on Nov 30, 2021, upon admitting to having lied in Parliament several times last year.

The WP then announced that the Sengkang GRC map would be redrawn and her ward, Compassvale, was distributed among Ms He, Prof Lim, and Mr Chua.

In a Facebook post on Sunday (Jan 16), Prof Lim wrote that he and his fellow MPs hoped “that such townhalls to be an open forum for #SengkangGRC residents to share their thoughts about a wide range of topics that affect their lives, from developments in national policy to key concerns of a more local nature.”

The meeting will be a virtual one, with those who wish to join invited to sign up here.

The first session will concern municipal matters.

“Each MP will briefly discuss an important townwide issue that has repeatedly arisen in our tenure so far. We will then open the floor to all residents to share their thoughts—whether on the topics we raised or others that they feel are worthy of consideration—before we break out for division-specific feedback,” added Prof Lim, who also said he hopes that future sessions may be held in person.

Ms He, who chairs Sengkang’s Town Council, announced in a press conference on Dec 2 that the residents Ms Khan had represented would be taken care of.

“Enfolding Compassvale into the oversight of the three MPs ensures that all residents of Compassvale will continue to have a direct line of contact with an MP who will represent them.

Residents are welcome to reach out to any one of us, even if they reside in a different division, as they have always been able to do.”

Shortly afterwards, the three remaining MPs announced that alternative arrangements had been made, and posted a map of Sengkang GRC’s new divisions.

Netizens applauded the WP MP’s for organising the town hall.

Some even asked if non-Sengkang GRC residents may join.

Lorry slams into car at Geylang junction, driver arrested for suspected drink driving

Singapore — A collision between a lorry and car along a Geylang road junction resulted in six injuries, of which two were hospitalised.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that the car driver was trapped and had to be rescued using hydraulic rescue equipment by officers.

According to Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily News, the incident happened at around 8 pm on Friday (Jan 13) at the junction of Guillemard Road and Cassia Link.

Photos of the accident showed the front bumper of the lorry smashed, while the affected car was in even worse condition, its hood and driver door dislodged from the impact.

Debris from the collision was scattered nearby.

Meanwhile, a passerby who witnessed the accident scene told Lianhe Zaobao that she saw several migrant workers by the side of the road, believed to be passengers of the lorry.

A 35-year-old and a 34-year-old lorry passenger were conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, while another four were assessed for minor injuries, although they refused to be taken to the hospital.

The 40-year-old lorry driver was arrested for suspected drink driving.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Under section 67 of the Road Traffic Act, the legal alcohol limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath or 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

If convicted of drink-driving, offenders are liable to a fine of up to S$10,000 or up to one year’s jail, or both.

Repeat offenders can be sentenced to up to two years’ jail and fined up to S$20,000.

Offenders will also be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least two and five years for first-time and repeat offenders, respectively.

“The period of disqualification may also be even longer if the offender has also been convicted of dangerous driving or careless driving,” notes Singapore Legal Advice on its website.

In response to the incident, members from the online community expressed that any accidents caused by drink drivers “should have been banned from driving for at least 10 years to deter others or repeat offenders.”

“Are our drink and drive penalties not severe enough? Why are there so many more such killer garbage on the roads?” asked another concerned citizen. /TISG

Singapore – A 33-year-old woman who fell onto a walkway shelter at Block 34 Whampoa West on Friday afternoon (Jan 14) passed away due to her injuries.

A 72-year-old man working at a restaurant café on the ground floor heard a loud bang.

He immediately went upstairs to check what had happened, reported Chinese media outlet Lianhe Zaobao.

The man soon discovered a woman lying on the roof of the walkway shelter. He quickly went back down to ask for help.

The man’s colleague, a 32-year-old runner at the restaurant, alerted the police. She later told Zaobao that they witnessed the woman was still panting, although she was lying down with her eyes closed.

A video uploaded in Sg-share together Facebook page on Jan 14 showed several Singapore Civil Defence Force officers and paramedics attending to the woman on the walkway shelter.

Meanwhile, an SCDF ambulance was parked on standby nearby.

SCDF confirmed receiving a call for assistance on Friday at around 5:15 pm on Jan 14 at Block 34 Whampoa West.

The woman was manually rescued from the roof of the covered walkway and conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital while semi-conscious.

She eventually succumbed to her injuries and passed away at the hospital.

No foul play is suspected based on preliminary investigation findings.

Opposition Reform Party chairman Charles Yeo arrested for alleged forgery and criminal breach of trust

Photo: FB screengrab/Charles Yeo

Singapore – The police said on Saturday (Jan 15) that the chairman of opposition Reform Party, Charles Yeo, was arrested on Jan 12 for alleged involvement in criminal breach of trust and forgery.

Mr Yeo claimed on his social media accounts that the investigations against him were “politically motivated,” spending 15 hours locked up on “trumped-up and false” charges.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said they “categorically reject” the claims.

“Neither are the allegations’ trumped up’ for political reasons,” said the police in a Straits Times report.

Mr Yeo said on Facebook on Jan 13 that ever since he contested the election, the “SPF has been constantly harassing” him “as the tool of the PAP (People’s Action Party) with all sorts of trumped-up accusations.”

He also noted that “those responsible for far worse” were given impunity as they were “PAP linked.”

“I spent 15 hours in the lockup today, handcuffed, and this should say all that needs to be said about the fascistic repression of critics,” he added.

He shared his experience through various social media posts and videos, accusing the police acted unprofessionally.

He also found it unusual that his phone and SIM card were seized as the “phone had nothing to do at all with these alleged offences which are entirely trumped up.”

“For the purpose of the investigations, Mr Charles Yeo’s mobile telephone and SIM card were seized for forensic examination. The seizure was done in accordance with powers given to the police under the Criminal Procedure Code,” said the police.

Mr Yeo said that he did not “take a cent of the personal injury monies nor did I forge any documents at all.”

“I am now under bail of S$35,000, an inexplicably high amount given that the sum allegedly misappropriated was also S$35,000, which I need to instruct a lawyer to vary downwards,” he added.

Mr Yeo appealed for donations to raise funds for his legal fees and “take out an application for wrongful arrest.”

On Sunday (Jan 16), Mr Yeo uploaded another post on Facebook, urging the public to watch his live Instagram video “to hear his side of the story and not the one-sided state media PAP propaganda.”

Mr Yeo drew attention online after clips of him struggling to deliver a speech for his party in Mandarin while campaigning went viral.

He was part of a Reform Party team that contested Ang Mo Kio GRC during the 2020 General Elections, garnering 28.09 per cent of votes and losing to a PAP slate led by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Another unidentified individual was also arrested on Wednesday, following police reports filed against Whitefield Law Corporation, where Mr Yeo works as a criminal defence lawyer.

“The police had received at least four police reports involving four different clients of Whitefield Law Corporation, alleging forgery and/or criminal breach of trust,” said the police.

If found guilty of criminal breach of trust under Section 409 of the Penal Code, Mr Yeo can be imprisoned for up to 20 years and fined.

For the offence of forgery under Section 465 of the Penal Code, he could be sentenced to up to four years jail, fined or both./TISG

In a recent (and rare) social gathering, I met an extremely upbeat and energetic fellow who proudly proclaimed, “I’m a multivitamins guy!” in a booming voice to pretty much anyone who would listen, earnestly sharing tales of exercise and healthy eating while touting the many benefits of health supplements. I want what he’s having, I thought wryly to myself, noting how lethargic I seemed in comparison.

When I think of multivitamins, I think of those brightly-coloured Flintstones multivitamins (which apparently aren’t that great for you) that I’m sure most of us encountered as children. Ah, memories. But what’s in a multivitamin, and do we really need it?

Multivitamins are designed to supplement the body with micronutrients that might be missing from our daily diets, and many swear by their salubrious effects.

However, when it comes to the best vitamins for adults, not all multivitamins are formulated equally. Health experts weigh in on which multivitamins come out on top.

Consult with your healthcare provider before starting on multivitamins or any type of supplements. It’s also very important to consider everything from your age, current health status, diet and any conditions or issues you might have.

‘Gangster’ cyclists chase car 300m in Chinatown after getting honked at for road hogging

Singapore – A group of cyclists were caught on dashboard camera giving chase to a driver who honked at them for hogging the road.

“11 cyclists road bullying or road rage against cam car,” said Facebook page Beh Chia Lor – Singapore Road on Friday (Jan 14), attaching video footage of the incident.

According to the post, the group blocked the traffic when they couldn’t decide what to eat for supper, resulting in getting honked at by the cam car.

The group became unhappy and chased the cam car down and purposefully blocked the driver’s path, threw a bicycle in the middle of the road and knocked on the car to challenge the driver, said Beh Chia Lor.

The incident is said to have happened along Keong Saik Road on Jan 9.

The video began with the cam car waiting to turn while the cyclists passed by in front.

The same group ended up blocking the turn into Keong Saik Road, resulting in the alleged honking.

As the vehicle made its way along Chinatown, the same group followed and eventually caught up, blocking the car’s path.

“Gangster behaviour by this group of cyclists that should not be tolerated in Singapore,” said Facebook page ROADS.sg, sharing the video.

Beh Chia Lor uploaded another video on Saturday (Jan 15), adding that the footage might have been the continuation of what happened.

The cyclists and surrounding shops looked the same as in the previous video.

Photo: FB screengrab/Beh Chia Lor – Singapore Road

“Driver is a PHV (private hire vehicle) driver and came down to angrily confront the group of 11 cyclists after their antics of chasing him down, blocking and hitting his car,” the post noted.

“It’s the continuation from that previous video,” a netizen commented. “They challenge driver cos they got huge numbers and thought can bully driver, driver really comes out challenge them, they lose out so take video upload to act innocent.”

“Good opportunity for LTA (Land Transport Authority) to impose road tax for cyclists who want to cycle on roads,” added another netizen, garnering over 110 likes.

Beginning Jan 1, 2022, cycling groups are limited to a maximum length of five bicycles due to space constraints on Singapore’s roads, said the Ministry of Transport after accepting the Active Mobility Advisory Panel’s fifth review of rules for road cyclists.

This means that up to five cyclists will be allowed if the group is riding single-file or up to 10 cyclists if riding two abreast.

Furthermore, different groups of cyclists are required to keep a safe distance of approximately two lamp posts or 30 metres between groups.

The composition fines for errant riders was also raised from S$75 to S$150. Cyclists may be charged in court for more serious cases, resulting in a fine of up to S$1,000, imprisonment for up to three months for the first offence, or both.

Repeat offenders can be fined up to S$2,000, imprisonment for up six months, or both./TISG

YouTuber exposes flaws in Razer N95 mask; company retracts marketing claims

Shenzhen – Following a YouTube review of its Zephyr and Zephyr Pro mask, which boasted N95-grade filters, gaming hardware company Razer has retracted all claims on its products.

Shenzhen-based YouTuber who goes by the handle Naomi’ SexyCyborg’ Wu conducted a video review of Razer’s Zephyr mask, which was marketed as an “air purifying mask” with N95-grade filters.”

As an advocate for masks since the Covid-19 pandemic started, Wu said that her stance had cost her a lot of followers as not everyone agrees with her position.

She first described the mask’s hardware, commenting on magnetic filters and overall “nice design.”

Photo: YT screengrab/Naomi ‘SexyCyborg’ Wu

Wu then focused on the health safety characteristics of the mask, comparing it to other medical-grade masks and equipment.

Photo: YT screengrab/Naomi ‘SexyCyborg’ Wu

“That said, loose-fitting PAPRs (Powered Air Purifying Respirator) are by far the most comfortable kind of mask or respirator to wear for any amount of time as well as the safest,” she commented.

“The product concept (Zephyr’s) is definitely sound, and Razer should be congratulated for being willing to take a chance and step up, innovate and try to make a product that truly serves the public good,” Wu noted.

However, it was not designed by people who knew very much about masks, wearables or biomedical engineering, she added.

“The mask itself is not NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) approved and would never get NIOSH approval” due to problems with fit, filtration and protection, she said.

On the previously marketed “N95” materials used in the mask, Wu said such marketing was “misleading and dishonest.”

N95 is a certification for the entire mask, not a part of it, she said.

Photo: YT screengrab/Naomi ‘SexyCyborg’ Wu

“It’s just deceptive marketing,” Wu said. “The mask can never, and should never, have N95 anything written anywhere on the packaging or marketing material.”

Following the video, which has had over 1 million views since its Nov 2, 2021 release, Razer issued a statement on its Twitter account on Jan 8 to explain the “science” behind its masks.

“We’ve taken feedback and guidance from regulatory agencies to establish our testing protocols for the Razer Zephyr and Razer Zephyr Pro,” the company said, encouraging members of the public to “review the test results” included in the post.

Somewhere in the fine print on its website, Razer noted, “The Razer Zephyr and Zephyr Pro are not certified N95 masks, medical devices, respirators, surgical masks, or personal protective equipment (PPE) and are not meant to be used in medical or clinical settings.”

Photo: Taken from Razer’s website

Gaming website GamesRadar also said on Jan 13 that Razer had removed all mention of “N95-grade” from its website and marketing materials of the Zephyr masks.

Razer has also reached out to Wu, informing her of their plan to remove the N95 marketing from the website. “Sorry, but no – it’s past that,” said Wu.

“Media outlets have labelled it an N95 mask, immune-compromised individuals and healthcare workers all over social media are calling it an N95 mask,” she said in a Twitter thread.

Razer confirmed in a Vulcan Post article that it is currently removing all references to “N95-Grade Filter” from marketing materials and reaching out to existing customers to clarify./TISG

Younger Singaporeans want a two-party system, whatever Ong Ye Kung may say

0

As Singapore transits to the post-Lee Kuan Yew/Goh Chok Tong/Lee Hsien Loong era, the big question has always been: Will the party which has been ruling the country for so many years be able and willing to adapt and remain relevant and dynamic? I am not so sure, judging by the remarks of Health Minister Ong Ye Kung at a Singapore Perspectives conference organised by the Institute of Policy Studies.

We are at a stage where we are watching a new 4G group about to take complete charge. The next PM will come from this group, as we have all been told. This new PM is supposed to carry the aspirations and expectations of many younger Singaporeans who had sent a clear message in GE2020: They want a two-party system, they want better checks and balances, they want greater accountability. This message came in the Workers’ Party’s capture of a new GRC (Sengkang), stronger showing in retaining Aljunied GRC and creditable performance in East Coast GRC which practically derailed the political trajectory of the then designated 4G PM to be.

Which part of the two-party system and greater public accountability points in the crucial GE2020 message did Ong Ye Kung, considered a potential senior hot shot in the next PAP government, not understand?

Like Finance Minister Lawrence Wong, a leading contender to be the fourth PM, who did it sometime back, Ong took part in what must now be seen as a de rigueur rite of passage for anyone who aspires to be in the top echelons of Singapore’s national leaders – deliver a philosophical cum realpolitik speech about the fate of thriving hubs past, present and future. Jericho, Chang’an, Rome, Constantinople, Kaifeng and Pataliputra got honourable mention together with New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore in Ong’s speech.

Fine.

Decades ago, far-sighted 1G DPM S Rajaratnam had already laid down the vision of Singapore as a “globalpolis”, which was shared by Singapore’s first Chief Minister David Marshall. Singapore has no choice but to constantly update itself to be relevant to the world – or be buried by the sands of time. Be a world hub, be capital of ASEAN (as someone suggested), be a smartphone offering linkages to all sorts of services and goods, as Ong himself pointed out. People like Prof Tommy Koh and former Foreign Minister George Yeo have also been painting their own grand own sweeps of history – on the rise and fall of cities – to remind Singaporeans not to be complacent.

It is precisely because Singaporeans are not complacent and are dissatisfied with the current political system that they are pushing vigorously and in no uncertain terms for change. They want stronger Opposition in Parliament and, perhaps, inevitably, a two-party system.

If the Health Minister, supposed to be a part of a reset government attempting to be more in tune with a younger generation, can unabashedly bang the same old outdated drum beat that Singapore cannot afford a two-party democracy, then he and the party he represents are out of touch and out of tune. Hopefully there are other 4G leaders who are not.

More ridiculous that he believes, as other establishment figures have in the past, the government can check its own self. Very few Singaporeans share this absurd belief.

That is why the Opposition has been growing in strength.

It would be a major mistake and suicidal for the 4G leaders to think they can have their cake and eat it – have a vibrant inclusive global city state and suppress the rising urge for change and greater accountability.

Study shows Covid loses 90% infectivity within minutes of being airborne

0

How long the coronavirus, behind the current pandemic, survives in exhaled air has been unknown so far.

However, a recent study now shows that it loses 90 per cent of its ability to infect human cells within 20 minutes of becoming airborne.

What is even better news is that much of the virus’ infectivity loss already occurs within a mere few minutes.

Results from a study at the University of Bristol’s Aerosol Research Centre underlined the precautions people need to take in order to avoid getting infected, primarily wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.

What is key to determining infection seems to be how close you get to someone who is already infected.

“People have been focused on poorly ventilated spaces and thinking about airborne transmission over metres or across a room. I’m not saying that doesn’t happen, but I think still the greatest risk of exposure is when you’re close to someone,” The Guardian quotes Prof Jonathan Reid, who headed the study as saying.

“When you move further away, not only is the aerosol diluted down, there’s also less infectious virus because the virus has lost infectivity [as a result of time],” he added.

The study has not yet been peer-reviewed and was carried out before the Omicron variant started to spread, and may therefore not apply to the newer variant, however.

A previous study carried out in the United States showed that infectious virus particles were still found after three hours in a study where the virus was sprayed into rotating sealed vessels that kept the virus airborne.

But these conditions are dissimilar to what occurs when people talk and breathe.

The study conducted by the University of Bristol is closer to what happens when individuals exhale, Prof Reid explained.

The scientists who conducted the study experimented with different temperatures and levels of humidity similar to in outside air, and then placed droplets containing the virus on human cells in Petri dishes to see whether the virus would grow.

In 40 per cent humidity air, which is common in office or restaurant settings, within 5 seconds of release, half of the virus became unable to infect the human cells.

As time went on, the virus continued to lose its infectivity and within 10 minutes the “majority” of the virus was inactivated.

After 20 minutes, around 90 per cent of the virus particles were inactive.

In situations where humidity levels were higher, however, such as those similar to a shower or steam room, the virus stayed stable for a longer time.

The Guardian added that the study would be extended to include the Omicron variant in the weeks to come.

Prof Reid added, “If I’m meeting friends for lunch in a pub today, the primary [risk] is likely to be me transmitting it to my friends, or my friends transmitting it to me, rather than it being transmitted from someone on the other side of the room.”  /TISG
