VIDEO: Two jaywalking men in Tampines show you how to stop vehicle & road traffic with ‘Power of the Force’ even on green light signal

Traffic rules are rules, not suggestions. This means they exist to be obeyed, even if you’re a Star Wars Jedi or Sith Lord, and no matter how much of a hurry you are in.

For two men in Tampines, however, this did not seem to be the case, as they used the power of their own upraised hands to somewhat force oncoming vehicles to stop, even when the light was green.

A video of the errant pedestrians was uploaded on the SG Road Vigilante Facebook and YouTube pages on Tuesday (May 3).

Taken from a dashcam, the video clearly shows that the green traffic light means the cars can go.

But the two men decide to boldly cross anyway. In the first half of the crosswalk, they use raised right hands to stop oncoming cars, in the second half, they use their left hands and merrily keep on going.

Commenters were all about the “power of the hand.”

Others surmised that the men may be from other countries, where this type of behaviour when crossing is not uncommon.

Some, however, suggested that the men may be drunk, writing that it was the “power of beer” rather than the “power of hand.”

Borders finally open! Part 2: Owl flight problem, lands on Marina Channel waters on the way home, gets safe ride back with dragonboat ‘rescue’ team, out 1st time in 2 years

After the recent crocodile-spotting in the waters off Lim Chu Kang, comes another unusual animal swim. This time around, for some reason, an owl took a dip at Marina Channel and was seen by a 20-person dragonboat team, who just happened to be out for the first time in two years.

Perhaps the owl was heading back home too, just as we surmised the crocodile was doing, since, after all, borders have just opened, right?

But then, however, when the dragonboat team saw it, the owl was just lying in the water. Owls are unable to ascend from water until they reach land, so the creature that the dragonboaters saw could have met a very wet end until the good samaritans showed up, rescued it, and helped it with a safe ride back to its home.

A video of the rescue, aptly set to music from the Harry Potter films, was uploaded on the Instagram page @teamtridentdb on May 1. In the clip, one of the rescuers stretches out his arm and tries to get the owl into a blue plastic scoop. The owl resists at first, but after a few tries, the rescuers got it into the boat.

It looks cold and exhausted, poor thing.

A photo of the little critter, looking a bit bedraggled but still dignified and otherwise, none worse for the wear was also posted, as well as one of the kind rescue team, who are all smiles.

One common scam, which helpers usually found via scrolling through their mobile phones, offers loans with low charges to maids, who have been vulnerable to the lure of quick cash when they’re in need.

‘Are we really at war with drugs & poverty, or are we merely at war with poor people for being poor?’ — Tang Li

Opinion Piece by Tang Li

We’ve finally done it. On the morning of 27 April 2022, Mr Nagaenthran K. Dharmalingam, a Malaysian Tamil who was caught with drugs in his possession, was hanged after a decade on death row. Mr Dharmalingam’s fate was never in doubt. Despite the valiant efforts of his lawyer, Mr M. Ravi and activist like Ms Kirstin Han, the only thing that kept Mr Dharmalingam alive from November 2021 onwards, was Covid-19.

Despite international pressure and appeals from the likes of the United Nations Human Rights Office and Sir Richard Branson, countless postings on social media, letters to everyone outside of Singapore and numerous vigils, the Singapore Government was resolute and hanged Mr Dharmalingam.

Are masks so much a part of the new normal that people forget they’re wearing them? This may have happened to one man, who, in the heat of an altercation with another driver, spat at him. Unfortunately, his intended insult backfired.

The altercation certainly was a heated one, with both men shouting at each other and even making rude signs with their middle fingers.

VIDEO: Wild monkey tries to kidnap toddler playing outside home

A video which surfaced online shows the horrific moment a toddler was snatched by a monkey and dragged away by her hair as she played outside on her skate-scooter. The video showed a wild monkey pouncing on the toddler in a village near Chongqing, southwestern China on 19 April.

The little girl was playing alone on her skate-scooter in the quiet street before the monkey crawled up to her, grabbed her head and viciously pulled her into the alley where it came from. Fortunately for the child, a bystander quickly sprung into action and rescued her from the clutches of the animal before it could harm her.

According to the girl’s mother, who has only been identified as Liu, the incident happened on the afternoon of 19 April when she was cooking inside. The three-year-old was scratched in the face by the monkey and was left with a scar on the side of her head. Liu said her child was taken to the hospital for treatment and vaccination.

Local officials tied the monkey to numerous other attacks in the local area. An initial investigation revealed that the monkey had previously attacked local villagers on multiple occasions. The police said the monkey came from nearby mountains and that they are unable to catch it. It occasionally comes to the residential area to trouble the villagers.

The authorities said that they will turn the monkey over to the wild animal protection department once it is caught to protect residents. The local forestry department told the media that attacks by wild monkeys are sporadic incidents and efforts are being made to prevent them from attacking humans again.

I tried to enjoy alone, but I couldn’t stop crying… I sat over there wondering what was wrong with me. Why am I rejected all the time?”

She now lives on campus, but her social interactions with the other residents are limited as well, and wrote that while she asked classmates to include her when they go out, this hasn’t happened.

“As I scrolled through my Instagram feed, I saw photos of the group hanging out together, clubbing, going for outings, going to the beach, and tears welled up in my eyes. It is not just their clique that went out. They called friends from outside their clique, but apparently I did not deserve to be called. Sometimes I wonder whether I should uninstall these social media accounts but it sounds like an escapist solution.”

“I am not in a relationship and I get the feeling that my friends don’t consider me important too,” she added.

In her own clique, she says her best friends who are paired up spend time with their own boyfriends, while those who are single go out with other friends.

“I doubt they even consider me as their best friend. Usually, no one wants to join if I suggest going out, participating in competitions, etc. What’s worse than hearing ‘no’ as a reply is not even getting a reply at all, as if I am not even worth a few minutes of their time.”

She wrote that to her friends, she’s just an “option for them, not a priority. I get rejected and declined for most of the things I say.”

Netizens, many of whom went through the same experiences as she has, wrote that there are many things she can do to advocate for herself so that she feels less lonely. Commenters were kind and encouraging to the girl, with some telling her to learn to love being by herself.

One netizen, who went through a similar experience, encouraged her to “create the life” she wants.

A number of netizens suggested that she try volunteer work.

Others said she should try telling her friends how she really feels.

“Just be your best self and the right people will see that and find you,” another wrote.

Lawrence Wong ‘faces challenge to be friend of both East & West’ — Financial Times

Finance Minister Lawrence Wong
Finance Minister Lawrence Wong in Parliament made a strong statement against racism and xenophobia.

During his time, founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew won praise from leaders both in the East and West, but the man who has been announced to be the next leader of Singapore may well yet face a tougher time ahead.

Maintaining good relations between China and the West will be somewhat trickier for Finance Minister Lawrence Wong, who was proclaimed last month as the head of the ruling People’s Action Party’s fourth generation of leaders (4G), and thus, successor to Lee Kuan Yew’s son, Lee Hsien Loong.

This week’s super long weekend with both (Labour Day & Hari Raya) could not have come soon enough. With the lifting of most Covid restrictions and people returning to work, this has been a week of change.

Labour Day, by virtue of its name, is about people and workers, while Hari Raya, among other things, is a time to reflect on society and humanity. Yet, even as these days are being marked, it would appear that as a society, we are still unable to let go of old stereotypes and sweeping racist generalisations.

Maids & migrant workers victimised by job scams, love scams & quick cash scams — MOM, NGOs & police share anti-scam advisories as over 60% have fallen prey to scammers

Over the past year, more migrant workers and maids have fallen prey to scammers. Police say that in 2020, there were 1,965 migrant workers and 216 domestic workers who were scammed.

One common scam, which helpers usually found via scrolling through their mobile phones, offers loans with low charges to maids, who have been vulnerable to the lure of quick cash when they’re in need.

This was especially true for some during the pandemic when the family members of some domestic workers lost their jobs and looked to the helpers for money.

The helpers resorted to taking out loans from scammers. Some of those loans asked for a deposit before releasing the amount intended for borrowing, and then the alleged moneylenders would disappear.

Phishing scams have also found their victims among maids, who have fallen prey like many others not just in Singapore, but in many parts of the world.

For migrant workers, the top three scams they were victimized by in 2021 are phishing, job and e-commerce scams, while for domestic helpers, phishing, internet love and loan scams have been the top three, the police told The Straits Times (ST).

One of the lead volunteers, Ms Ruchi Trivedi at ItsRainingRaincoats, a non-profit organisation said, migrant workers should not share their personal information, such as bank details and passwords, with anyone. They should not click on web links that they do not recognise and always ask an authority or their supervisors if they are unsure, ST reported.

“It’s definitely worrying, since scams can jeopardise their rice bowls while they are working in Singapore and could affect employers as well. In some cases, scammers harass the employer for money, even visiting their homes.

My advice is for maids to ask their employer or employment agency for help if they encounter a scam. But in some cases, maids know it’s a scam, but they are desperate for cash,” ST quoted the manager of United Channel maid agency, Ms Flora Sha, as saying.

Together with MOM and other groups, the police have been sharing the latest crime trends and anti-scam advisories with domestic and migrant workers.

Last year, the number of scams went up to 3,181 and 357 respectively, The Straits Times reported on May 4, an increase of over 60 per cent for both groups. Data from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) says that Singapore has 246,300 migrant domestic workers and 318,400 work permit holders in the construction, marine and process sectors, as of December 2021.

ST quoted the general manager of migrant workers’ rights group Transient Workers Count Too as saying, “One needs to only go on Facebook to look at the many job ads that target migrant workers. They look very similar to posts by registered employment agents and therefore, to an untrained eye, impossible to tell one apart from another.” /TISG

BTS’ Jimin’s apartment seized for non-payment of health insurance premiums

On April 24, Korean news outlet Biz Hankook reported that the National Health Insurance Service had seized Jimin’s apartment at Nine One Hannam in Seoul on January 25 due to the singer not paying his health insurance premiums.

The apartment had been purchased by Jimin for 5.9 billion won (approximately $4.7 million) back in May of last year. He received four separate notices about the seizure by registered mail before his apartment was seized.

Big Hit Music has issued a statement regarding the seizure of BTS’s Jimin’s apartment. According to the supergroup’s handlers, it was entirely their fault.

“Big Hit Music mistakenly omitted some mails while processing mails arriving at the artist’s apartment. Due to his tight overseas schedule and extended period of rest since the end of last year, Jimin was not aware of the overdue payment.

Upon acknowledging the case, he paid the full amount of arrears and the case is now closed. We sincerely apologize to the artist and fans for causing concerns,” said the company in a statement.

The seizure was ultimately lifted on April 22 after he paid the overdue health insurance premiums.

Jimin enjoyed the limelight recently when he and his bandmate Jungkook participated in the latest episode of The BTS Recipe cooking and education series.

In the show, the duo both prepared gimbap, a Korean dish made with cooked rice, vegetables, fish, and meat all rolled up in dried sheets of seaweed and served in dainty slices.

The show went down well with the audience, as fans enjoyed watching their singing idols getting the recipe right and then driving around in the car enjoying their delicious rolls.

Incidentally, BTS will be launching their new album on June 10.

‘Doctor Strange’ actor Zara Phythian & husband accused of sexually abusing 13yo girl

According to reports, Doctor Strange actress Zara Phythian, 36, and her husband Victor Marke, 59, have been accused of many sex offences, including having intercourse with a 13-year-old child after grooming her.

The pair is accused of 14 counts of sexual behaviour with the minor, who is now an adult. The woman says the abuse went on for three years. However, the couples are denying the claims.

The story does not end there. The accuser, the woman abused as a teen, says Mr Marke allegedly threatened to smash her kneecaps if she told anyone about it.

Child actor Corey Feldman and his fellow child actor Corey Haim were one of the most popular teen pin-ups in the world back in the late 80s. They were known as the two Coreys.

Feldman came up with a story about sexual abuse he and Haim experienced in the film business. He made the claims after Haim died of pneumonia at the age of 38 in 2010 following years of painfully public substance addiction, reports The Guardian.

“The biggest problem in Hollywood,” he says, “is paedophilia.”

His fellow former child actor Alison Arngrim has also said, “I literally heard that [the Two Coreys] were ‘passed around’. The word was they were given drugs and being used for sex,” Fox News reported.

As for the case of Zara Phythian, the woman said the abuse started in 2005.

In an interview presented for jurors at Nottingham Crown Court, the anonymous lady told police that the pair, who were not married at the time, videotaped the majority of the assault.

At the time, Phythian and Marke were both martial arts teachers, and the lady described the former as a role model for her success in the area.

The pair allegedly offered her wine, and Phythian challenged her to perform oral sex on Marke, who then had intercourse with both of them, the woman said.

Ms Teo put up posts on the COMPLAINT SINGAPORE Facebook page as well as on her own FB account. The florist eventually issued a refund along with an explanation and apology. However, they also demanded Ms Teo put the post down immediately or else they will take legal action against her.

She wrote that she was confused when she “received half a basket of flowers, when what I ordered was 1 basket of flowers.”

Photo: FB screengrab/Clarice Teo

Ms Teo added photos of the arrangement she received, as well as an advertisement from the company.

Photo: FB screengrab/Clarice Teo

In the ad, when the arrangement is given a 360-degree turn, flowers can be seen in the front and back of the basket where they are placed.

“I have purchased floral arrangements from other vendors and never had such an experience where the product received was different from what I received,” she wrote.

Ms Teo then sent the company a message about her order.

“They quoted a ‘misunderstanding’ on the product I received. When I responded with my thoughts, they replied that I could have checked with them and it’s all one-sided floral arrangements unless otherwise stated. I ordered the basket of flowers based on their photos and videos, which showed a full basket. It was not reflected anywhere on the product page that it was one-sided when I placed my order.”

Seasons by Dahlia also wrote that they had never had a complaint such as Ms Teo’s, but offered a refund after the arrangement was returned, which Ms Teo availed of.

However, the company sent her messages after she put up her post, saying that they had sought legal counsel and requesting her to “put down the post immediately” to “minimise further damages”.

After this, Ms Teo received the following message: “Hello Clarice, I am at my lawyer’s office to seek advice on defamation against you for making unsubstantiated and baseless comments on our company. Lawyer confirmed your words are defamatory. We now demand that you take down all posts on our company immediately, failing which we will seek aggravated damages against you in court. My lawyer is now preparing the Writ of Summons against you which will be delivered to you personally.”

In a Facebook post wherein commenting has been turned off, Seasons by Dahlia wrote that it had not been their intent to scam or cheat anyone. The post has received over 1000 laughing or angry-face emojis.

Netizens, many of whom have never heard of a one-sided floral arrangement, sided with Ms Teo, however.

Though one-sided arrangements do exist, it’s just not often done in the same way.
