Jamus Lim Shares Heartwarming Hari Raya Wishes and Family Moments

Workers’ Party Member of Parliament Jamus Lim took his young daughter to a light show at Gardens by the Bay, and wrote in a social media post on Monday (May 2) that she was “thoroughly captivated by the lights and sounds, and breaking into spontaneous dance.”

Like all parents, his child’s happiness made him happy, and he wrote that he wished “as we celebrate Eid and the end of Ramadan, that we pause and reflect on things that truly matter. May we continue to discover in ourselves this sense of childlike wonder, in all that we do,” he added on posts on Facebook and Instagram.

Assoc Prof Lim, 45, wrote that he spent extra time with his family, taking full advantage of the long break this weekend, and watched the supertree light show Gardens by the Bay, which enchanted his two-year-old daughter.

He described his feelings this way, “I felt what every parent in that situation undoubtedly would: an overfull heart, with an immense pride in the way she was able to be amazed by the simple magic that still exists in our world.”

The WP MP (Sengkang GRC) also wrote about “the intangible things that so many Singaporeans appreciate so much about living here,” including the freedom to bring a young child to a crowded place without fear of kidnapping, mass shooting, or a racial riot.

“I know these do not occur by chance, and are the result of deliberate policy, which has bequeathed to us the society we are able to enjoy today. I hope, in my own small way, to contribute toward building on this legacy, for the betterment of all Singaporeans,” he added.

This is not the first time Assoc Prof Lim has written a post about his daughter. In the past year, he shared a photo of her enjoying her first taste of tangyuan, a Winter Solstice treat; another of himself playing the guitar to her, quipping that “at least one of us is delighted with WFH.”

This year, on March 8, on International Women’s Day, he dedicated a social media post to the women “who call (and have called) so many of the shots in my life.” However, the photo he posted was that of his young daughter, aka “the Queen, adding “for whom we invest for the future”.

WP’s Abdul Shariff who was once a general worker & dispatch rider says, many older fellow worker’s savings are ‘insufficient to retire in a first world of high costs – and still rising’

On Labour Day, Workers’ Party politician Abdul Shariff Aboo Kassim, looked back on his days as a general worker and dispatch rider, but also noted that many of his former colleagues, now older but still working past retirement age, face an uncertain future as their savings may not be enough to see them through.

In a Facebook post on Sunday (May 1), Mr Abdul Shariff wrote that he thinks about his former colleagues every year on Labour Day, and shared some of his own past experiences, including lying down on a concrete floor during the midday break, a feeling that he described as “heavenly.”

“It was cooling and provided indescribable comfort to my tired limbs. The King Koil that I’ve been sleeping on today, with all its advanced features, has never given me this level of comfort,” he added.

He also wrote about a meal he often had during those days, “nasi pukul mati (literally translated: whack-till-die rice),” which he described as “a humungous amount of rice with curry, vegetables, and a poppadum. It kept our limbs going for the rest of the day. I understand it’s still sold today.”

However, he also voiced concerns over older workers, most of whom have stayed in low-wage jobs, going from one employer to another.

“It was difficult to pick up a skill when you’re exhausted at the end of the day from all the heavy lifting and yelling if you had a nasty supervisor. So, rest is very much needed and it prepared you physically and mentally for the next day. Opportunities to move up was therefore scarce. My own progress would probably have stalled had I not been lucky,” Mr Abdul Shariff explained.

He added that many continue to work despite being well past their retirement age, as “they worked during a period when financial and healthcare support were modest. The savings accumulated over the course of their working life are insufficient to retire in a first world of high costs – and still rising.”

The WP politician surmised that the price of nasi pukul mati has probably also risen since his days as a general worker, but added that he hopes “it’s still affordable and has not taken on a different meaning.”

Mr Abdul Shariff, who was part of the WP slate in East Coast GRC during the election in 2020 and is active on the ground there with party mates including Ms Nicole Seah and Mr Kenneth Foo, added photos of a WP food distribution exercise held on Apr 30.

A video of teens doing a silly prank at McDonald’s SAFRA Punggol recently has earned the ire of many commenters, who called the teens out for their bad behaviour.

The poster sent the video to the Singapore Incidents Facebook page, where it was published on Sunday (May 1). The 25-second clip showed a teenage boy pouring two cups of water on his head, whilst being recorded on the cam phones by a few girls.

The boy walks away after the stunt, and the girls similarly scurry.

However, this was not the only prank they pulled. The poster said that one teen from the group also put some ice cream on his face and then threw it on the floor.

The poster also expressed sympathy for the elderly cleaner who had to clear up the mess the teens made.

The video has since gone viral, getting over 50,000 views on the Singapore Incidents Facebook and Instagram pages.

Here is the caption in full.

“Hi, i would like you to help expose an inconsiderate act conducted by a group of YPs at punggol safra macdonald.

first, one of them bought ice cream then slapped it on his own face, throwing the remaining on the floor, creating a mess (photo as attached).

then, they requested for 2 cups of water for another one of their stupid pranks, which he poured over himself in the store, creating a puddle of water and the poor old uncle had to clean after their mess (on top of that, they did not clear their trays).”

Netizens were quick to condemn the irresponsible actions of the teens.

Some even tagged the police and urged that the teens be reported.

PM Lee: S’pore S$8 billion poorer each year, recession could hit in the next 2 years

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Sunday (May 1) that Singapore could experience a recession within the next two years, particularly due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“At the start of the year, we were cautiously optimistic about our post-Covid recovery. But the outlook has clouded,” said Mr Lee to unionists at Downtown East and those who attended the May Day Rally.

He admitted that the country is emerging from the pandemic into a world that has not only been altered by Covid-19 but faces significant global security challenges.

“We can feel the headwinds, even as we sense new opportunities opening up,” he noted in a Facebook post on Sunday. He added that the “global headwinds” set Singapore back by S$8 billion a year.

Referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Mr Lee said there is “no good outcome in sight” and that the fighting would likely drag on for “quite a while longer.”

“The longer the war continues, the greater the risk of the conflict escalating,” he said.

No one will be able to control how the situation unfolds if the war spreads beyond Ukraine’s borders or unconventional weapons are used, he noted.

Meanwhile, Singapore feels the impact of the war on the cost of living, with worsening inflation.

With Russia being a major exporter of commodities such as oil, gas, vegetable oils and cereal crops, the invasion has resulted in a worldwide energy crunch and rising food prices.

“The government is doing all it can to cushion the impact of Singaporeans and alleviate the cost-of-living pressures,” said Mr Lee.

However, “Singapore is tightly integrated into the global economy and given our small size, we will always be a price taker in world markets, so we cannot avoid these global headwinds,” he explained.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has estimated the country to be hit by about S$8 billion per year, or 1.5 per cent of Gross Domestic Product.

“That means we in Singapore have become collectively S$8 billion poorer off per year, and there is no escape from this,” said Mr Lee.

Although government support schemes will help share the burden and cushion the effects on households, “this does not really solve our problem” in the long term, said Mr Lee.

The fundamental issue lies in the higher energy and food prices; therefore, the country must be more productive.

“The imperative for businesses and workforce transformation has never been stronger. We need to continually reinvent ourselves to maintain our place in the world,” he said.

“Our tripartite partnership has helped us overcome many past crises. Having fought Covid-19 together, we can be confident of overcoming future challenges and making the most of opportunities that come our way,” said Mr Lee, ending his Facebook post. /TISG

Lawrence Wong: Recession & stagflation are not ruled out, despite forecast that 2022 holds economic growth

Public on MCI ‘stereotypical’ video ad that was taken down: ‘No need to ‘progress’ or be ‘uplifted’ to celebrate Hari Raya’

The Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) has taken down a Hari Raya video following online backlash that the ‘advertisement’ stereotypes the Malay community.

“It’s been two years since we’ve celebrated Hari Raya properly. You do not need to ‘progress’ or be ‘uplifted’ to be able to celebrate Hari Raya,” wrote Instagram page Lepak Conversations on Sunday (May 1). The page was referring to a video titled Messages for Syawal, uploaded by MCI on various Gov.sg social media accounts in time for Hari Raya Aidilfitri on Tuesday (May 3).

The video featured a Malay family facing financial difficulties. The father was a mover and the mother a housewife. Their young son, Syawal, is too embarrassed to invite friends over to his home.

Syawal decides to cut school and hand out flyers to earn extra cash. After discovering their son’s actions, Syawal’s mother returns to work while his father gets a new job.

The 2½-minute video ends with the family moving into a new flat, with the message “may we celebrate a brighter tomorrow” and a Hari Raya greeting.

The video also mentions various government schemes, such as the Uplift initiatives, which aim to support and strengthen the partnership between schools and community partners to enhance upstream wraparound support for disadvantaged students.

Lepak Conversations, among other netizens, criticised the stereotypes presented by the video.

“On any day of the year, Malays are tired of hearing how the community has not progressed enough. However, seeing Malays portrayed in a reductive and condescending manner in a Hari Raya advertisement is the last thing we expect to contend with in the last few days of Ramadan,” said the Instagram page.

“You are not defined by the ‘Malay problem.’ The Malay community is enough and worthy of celebrating joy,” it added.

The account also highlighted other issues with the video:

Photo: IG screengrab/Lepak Conversations

“Cukuplah (Enough is enough),” said Singaporean playwright Alfian Sa’at in a Facebook post, sharing comments on the video by the website Pengkritik Sandiwara.

“To me, the biggest problem with the video is the way it recycles racist ideas about Malay attitudes towards work and education,” the site noted.

MCI announced on Sunday that it has taken down the video from Gov. sg’s YouTube channel.

Read below the translated statement from MCI to BeritaHarian:

“Internally, the core of this video is about the story of a family’s resilient journey in the face of challenging situations and how mutual support and encouragement can foster this process.

We understand that what can be gleaned from any creative work is subjective. While most Malay/Muslim viewers, including many who watched it before it was uploaded, saw this story as soothing to the heart or heartwarming, some expressed discomfort towards it.

This festive season should be the foremost event to celebrate what brings us together as a society.

To avoid controversy and disagreements during this period, we decided to withdraw this video,” said MCI.

“MCI has explained why it took down the Hari Raya short film. However, there has not been any proper acknowledgement of why the narrative in the video was inappropriate for a Hari Raya campaign. We can do so much better,” added Lepak Conversations. /TISG

‘Waste of resources’ — Netizens comment after police say they’ll contact relevant people for probe on Pritam Singh & Faisal Manap

In a statement on Friday (Apr 29), the Singapore Police Force said it has been going through evidence from Parliament and will be reaching out to individuals relevant to the case of possible offences committed by Workers’ Party Members of Parliament Pritam Singh and Muhamad Faisal bin Abdul Manap.

In February, when the Committee of Privileges released its findings regarding the case of former WP MP Raeesah Khan, it concluded that the leaders of the Workers’ Party (WP) also lied in relation to the complaint against Ms Khan.

The COP found that she was acting under the direction of Mr Singh, the WP secretary-general and the Leader of the Opposition, as well as party chair and vice-chair, Ms Sylvia Lim and Mr Faisal Manap, respectively.

Furthermore, the committee recommended that Mr Singh and Mr Manap be referred to the public prosecutor in relation to Mr Singh’s conduct before the committee and Mr Faisal’s possible contempt of Parliament for his refusal to answer “relevant” questions.

In April, Mr Singh said that he rejected the findings of the COP, noting that the “gaps and omissions” in the report suggested political partisanship.

Responses online from netizens have been mixed.

Some commenters are calling the probe “a waste of resources” and seem to feel that it’s time to “just move on.”

Another netizen called it a “Stale story to tekan opposition,” and others dropped comments along similar lines.

 Others brought up Ms Khan.

Some asked why she was not under police investigation.

Others, however, called the investigation “fair” and said that the WP has nothing to fear if they’ve done nothing wrong.

Caught on cam: Man removing Hari Raya decor, Woman says he does this every year

Sense And Nonsense by Tan Bah Bah

Singapore is at mid-term between its general elections and a year away from the next presidential election. There is still some time before GE2025 though it is not that far off, especially as the ruling party has only just settled its leadership transition mini-crisis caused by the inadequacy of the 4Gers’ first choice as Prime Minister-designate. PE2023 seems a less problematic challenge.
