Maid: Even on my off day, I have to clean the house in the morning before going out and then at night after I return. Is this normal?

With a situation not uncommon for maids, yet another foreign domestic worker took to social media asking if it was the norm for her to have to work despite it being her day off.

In a post to Facebook group FDW in Singapore (working conditions forum), a netizen who went by the name of Mary Joy Agustin asked other domestic helpers if it was normal for them to have to work on their days off. Elaborating on her own situation in her post on Tuesday (May 17), Ms Agustin said that in the morning before she left the house, she had to clean until about 9 am. She also added that after the day’s activities outside, she had to continue cleaning once she got back home at 7 pm.

Responding to her query, many other helpers wrote that they too would clean on their days off. They advised Ms Agustin not to be too calculative and to just do a little bit more than what was required.

Ms Agustin is hardly the only one in this situation, though. Last month, another domestic helper checked with other helpers if they had to work on their days off, as she was required to wake up at 5:45 am every day, vacuum and mop the floor and empty the rubbish – even on her supposed day off.

In a post on Facebook group FDW in Singapore (working conditions forum), Ms Iradiel Augustin Rafelyn asked if others were also treated the same as she was on what was supposed to be her one day of rest in the week.

In her post, she said that on Saturday night, before her day off, she was also required to prepare the family’s lunch for the next day. Despite having to work late to get the Sunday lunch ready, she still had chores to complete on Sunday morning and could only leave at 9:30 am. Moreover, when she returned that evening, she would have to prepare Monday’s lunch for the family.

Maid asks if others have to wake up before 6am on their day off to vacuum & mop before going out, then return to prepare the next day’s lunch

Letter to the Editor: “Please try not to cancel Food Delivery orders, we need time to look for parking, food outlets, and waiting for collection”

Dear Editor,

I refer to the article: Letter to the Editor: Food delivery order cancellations must be done by customers only, not by riders, and riders must be compensated for the cancelled trip

I am also a delivery person with Grabfood. I have quite a number of cancellations by some customers after I had collected the food they had ordered or when I was on the way to collect them.

For the former case, we, the delivery personnel should still get the fares as time, effort, and frustration are involved, and our incentives may be affected. Of course, instead of throwing away the food, it is better to eat it (since it is allowed) or in one case, I gave it to a migrant worker!

For the latter case, may I plead that customers try not to cancel their orders? At least, they are still helping us to earn our living, or even encouraging us, or we can “donate” the food to those who need them more, for example, the cleaners or migrant workers we come across.

Lastly, to me, I am providing a service whether low fares or far distances. I hope my delivery fellows also try not to cancel any collection. Remember, we are all providing a service.

But may I suggest that  if customers cancel their orders for very good reasons, it must be approved first by the company of the delivery personnel.

And dear customers, please be patient with the time of delivery. Many times we have to spend time looking for parking space, the food outlets, waiting for collection, and, finally, delivering; again, time to travel, looking for parking and the drop point, and at last, food delivered.

Who doesn’t want to earn more if they have a choice?

Britney Spears says she suffered miscarriage

Britney Spears announced on May 14 that she had suffered a miscarriage. The singer revealed that she was pregnant last month with her partner Sam Asghari. A month after announcing on Instagram that she was pregnant, the pop star posted an update saying that she suffered a miscarriage, writing: “We have lost our miracle baby.”

“It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that we have lost our miracle baby early in the pregnancy,” the couple said in a statement on Spears’ Instagram.

“This is a devastating time for any parent. Perhaps we should have waited to announce until we were further along, however, we were overly excited to share the good news. Our love for each other is our strength. We will continue trying to expand our beautiful family. We are grateful for all of your support. We kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Spears has two sons, a 15 and 16-year-old, with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. She has been dating model Asghari since 2016 and the duo announced their engagement in 2021.

Spears’s pregnancy announcement last month was viewed by many as a declaration of freedom after she had finally come out of a conservatorship that had been part of her life since she was in her 20s.

The conservatorship had granted rights to oversee her personal and financial life to her father, James P. Spears, as there had been concerns over her mental health and possible drug addiction.

When the conservatorship had been dissolved last year, Spears testified that the arrangement had been cruel, and she said that she was not even allowed to remove her intrauterine device (IUD).

“I want to be able to get married and have a baby,” Spears had said. “I was told right now in the conservatorship I am not able to get married or have a baby.”

Her statement had caused an uproar among reproductive rights advocates, as forced birth control is seen to be a violation of human rights.

Shortly after her conservatorship ended, Spears announced her engagement to boyfriend Asghari, an actor and fitness trainer.

Asghari had met Spears while working on a music video for her song “Slumber Party”.
Spears announced that she was pregnant on April 11, posting a photograph of pink flowers on Instagram and writing: “So I got a pregnancy test … and uhhhhh well … I am having a baby.”

The message posted on Spears’s Instagram on May 14 expressed gratitude for fans’ support. “Our love for each other is our strength,” it added. “We will continue trying to expand our beautiful family.”

Would you dare walk downtown in a naked dress from Gaultier?

A model causes a commotion as she walks down the street in a naked Jean Paul Gaultier gown. The £500 gown gives the impression that the woman wearing it is completely naked. The naked dress has also sparked a backlash from feminist activists.

On Thursday, the model got plenty of attention while walking near the Chiltern Firehouse hotel in West London. It happened after glamour model Keeley Hazell, 35, flaunted the racy maxi dress on social media, joking that it was ideal wedding guest attire.

Feminist activists are unhappy and the question is which is worse? Letting women walk naked in the streets or wearing the offensive and transparent dress from the posh clothing brand?

The debate is ongoing in the U.K. but the shocking and revealing dress did not escape the attention of the media and of course netizens.

The contentious gown was taken from the fashion house’s archives and will be featured in a new collection with Kanye West’s stylist pal Lotta Volkova.

“It’s inappropriate, and Jean Paul Gaultier should be aware of this,” says some comments.

Gaultier, 70, has designed clothing for celebrities such as Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna.

Some customers took to Facebook to criticise the dress.

“This is not becoming at all, and I would even say inappropriate,” one person said.

“How about one with a man?” they suggested.

Bella Hadid

Bella Hadid, the American model, walked the ramp in a see-through mesh white gown with black lace embellishment.

This happened on the Runway at Jean Paul Gaultier’s Final Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week Show in Paris, Autumn Winter 2020.

Bella Hadid did stun fans when she stepped out on the catwalk wearing the gown which featured strategically placed black embroidery to cover the supermodel’s modesty.

But the naked dress performance beats Hadid’s more modest gown.

Dogs attacking children, elderly, and other dog, dog abuse & dog beheading

A tragic situation took place when a three-year-old baby was killed by a dog in Greater Manchester in the U.K. The ‘tragic and sad’ incident was reported to the Police and an inquiry into the death is opened to determine the facts, according to a statement from the police.

The toddler was airlifted to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, with the police saying they suspect that the little boy has sadly succumbed to injuries received as a result of a dog attack. The police say there were previous incidents involving dogs at the address.

In 2020, a dog mauled a baby Elon Jase Ellis-Joynes in his home in South Yorkshire. The dog, a Chow Chow Alsatian-cross, was not well treated by the owner, Stephen Joynes, 36.

In March, a man was sentenced to four years in prison after his out-of-control dog killed his unaccompanied 12-day-old kid. The latter was accused of hitting and kicking his dog, failing to train it around children, and allowing it to fear his neighbours. Reports say the same dog had previously hurt an older child.

A few months ago, on the same road from the attack on the baby in Greater Manchester, a grandma and a pooch were attacked by three ferocious Staffordshire Bull Terriers. The 69-year-old was walking the Westie Max near the Rochdale Canal in Milnrow. The dog belonged to the woman’s daughter-in-law.

The three Bull Terriers appeared from nowhere and pounced on them. Two of the dogs started biting her, but she managed to wriggle free to hide under a tree to avoid their attacks. The vicious dogs then grabbed hold of the pooch, repeatedly sinking their teeth into his neck and leaving him with several deep wounds.

Dog beheaded

Two thugs were sentenced to 19 months in prison after decapitating a Yorkshire Terrier and leaving its head on a door handle in retaliation for a pub brawl.

They severed Bailey the dog’s head before disposing of his body. A horrified child later discovered the head.

On May 19, 2018, the evil duo got into a fight with a fellow customer. They drove to the victim’s house early the next morning, stole their pet, and then returned to the pub to carry out the heinous act.

6 steps to setting your financial goals and keeping them to secure your present & future

A goal without a plan is just a desire. That is why setting financial goals and creating investment plans for the future is important, otherwise, a goal just remains that, a goal with no chance of materializing in the future.

If you’ve never set a financial goal before, some of the basic things you need to look for are duration, purpose, and amount. For example, I want to make X amount by Y date in order to purchase Z.

Write your goal down

When you put pen to paper and write it down, you’re more likely to be committed to the goal. Stick it somewhere obvious once you have, as seeing it will often keep you focused.

Make it specific and measurable

Write the amount needed to settle that student loan or to buy your first car. Next, make it measurable by figuring out your budget and how much and how long it would take to meet that goal.

Build an emergency fund

Life is unpredictable. Be prepared for money problems and save up. Expenses often appear out of the blue; medical bills, car repairs, family obligations and the like. This is when an emergency fund is going to come in handy. A good aim is to have at least three to six months of emergency funds.

Strive to get out of debt

Pay off all your loans as soon as you can, whether it’s a hire-purchase car, student, or housing loan or even personal loans that were needed earlier. It is always easier to build a future with money once you’ve settled past debts.

Retirement fund

Very often people think it’s premature to think about a retirement fund, especially when you’re young because you have so much time to work and earn, it just doesn’t seem important.

But again life happens, and anything can occur; poor health, losing your job just a few years too soon or any other variable that might mean having to retire a little earlier than planned and even if you don’t, it’s never too early to start saving for your retirement fund.

Spend less and save more

Set a strong intention that you are going to do this no matter what. Look for good deals, find discounts, use coupons, pay cash and be vigilant about how much goes out every month.

Plan your grocery shopping and meals ahead so that you still get to splurge on what you like by putting aside some money for entertainment and luxury items once in a while.

Why do you need to do all this in the first place? Simply put, it will change how you view money. You will start to see how every decision you make impacts your overall financial health.

A simple example would be buying gourmet coffee every day because you think you deserve a treat, factor in the cost of that over the week or over a month, and you’ll see that perhaps the money could have been put to better use elsewhere or contribute to more savings.

So for example, if you saved $100 a month as “coffee” savings and invested it every month, the sum could grow to a whole lot more thanks to the power of compounding interest.

Think about now taking that investment amount and re-investing it for another 10 to 20 years, and you will see that it’s not all about how much you earn, but how much you save and invest at the end of the day.

So it’s important to remember to have some fun with your money but ultimately bear in mind that how you spend your money today will significantly impact your future.

SG Hitch is a Telegram group wherein commuters book rides. The TikToker said in comments that she had used the group before and had not encountered problems until she got an offer from “J,” who had no other username.

On Saturday (May 14) she posted screenshots of their chat, where “J” said that he recognized her.

He then asked her if she wanted to “hook up secretly.” He then proceeded to tell her in graphic terms how attracted he was to her.

No wonder it creeped her out.

In a follow-up TikTok, she shed more light on the situation.

@nicolett.ee said that the only Telegram group the two of them have in common is the SG Clubbing group, “which means he may not even be in the SG Hitch group,” she added.

But, even when she stopped replying to him, “J” could not, or did not want to, take the hint.

He continued to message her and ask her how she was, even asking her if she still wanted to hitch a ride.

“No,” she said, as though her silence had not been enough.

However, after she would not reply, another person, who went by “L” on Telegram, began asking if she needed a ride.

He “messaged in the same way as J was messaging me,” she said.

“So they’re probably the same person,” she concluded.

Some commenters on @nicolett.ee’s second TikTok wrote that “J” had reached out to them as well.

Shopee’s Forrest Li, Singapore’s richest man in 2021, loses US$25billion in tech wipeout

Last year, Bloomberg Billionaires Index listed Mr Forrest Li as the richest person in Singapore. However, the co-founder of Sea Ltd., a holding company for Shopee, has since lost over 80 per cent of his fortune due to a market crash that caused the world’s 500 richest people to lose over $US1 trillion (SGD1.4 trillion) this year.

At one point, Sea Ltd, SeaMoney, and Garena, were widely perceived to be the most valuable technology company in Southeast Asia, with e-commerce, online gaming and digital payment businesses. The global consumer internet company has 33,000 employees. Mr Li is also the owner of Lion City Sailors FC. And despite his recent losses, his wealth is still considerable. Bloomberg Wealth reported that his net worth is now at US$4.7 billion (SGD6.5 billion) but he is no longer in the world’s top 500 wealthiest.

VIDEO: Woman ‘chopes’ MBS parking space, knocks on camcar to stop reversing into slot, threatens to call police for ignoring her ‘chope’

Although public parking lots operate on a first-come-first-served basis, some individuals feel they can reserve one by using their bodies to chope the space. A woman blocking an available parking space at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) for her husband got into an altercation with an incoming vehicle. She even said she would get the police involved.

SG Road Vigilante posted dashcam footage on its YouTube channel of one of the latest parking chope incidents on May 15 at the MBS carpark. A woman in yellow appeared as the cam car approached a seemingly empty parking slot. She took her stance in the middle while the cam car positioned itself to reverse into the slot.

Food delivery rider Ilya Nur Fadhly shining star of Singapore MasterChef scrap food challenge!

The third episode of MasterChef Singapore Season Three saw delivery rider Ilya Nur Fadhly shining as he became the star of the day, winning the “scrap” food challenge and walking away with SGD3,000.

The challenge was centred around raising awareness of food wastage, and each cook was given an hour to whip up treats with the inventive use of discarded food. In order to make sure that they don’t cheat, they were each given food scrap bins on their bench top. They were only allowed to dispose of items that they absolutely could not use.

Ilya’s dish consisting of Chwee Kueh earned a host of compliments from the judge, with Chef Bjorn stating that the food delivery rider was definitely ready to represent Singapore on the world stage. Ilya clinched the DBS cash prize where SGD3,000 was transferred directly through the DBS Digi Banking app. This gave him the strategic advantage – out of five other cooks whose dishes were tasted by the judges, he could select three to be safe from elimination.

Ilya who is 36 years old and a father of two said that his dream was to open his own food establishment one day with a secret menu that changes weekly. Employing a cooking style that uses flavourful combinations and fusion for comfort food, he said that being a food delivery rider wasn’t necessarily a bad thing and isn’t always because a person is not educated enough to do something else.

“Sometimes it is merely a choice of occupation,” he said. Some of his favourite activities include making TikTok videos depicting humorous moments in his daily life.

“I was an education consultant providing enrichment courses for school and started doing delivery during the pandemic,” he added. Curiously, Ilya joined MasterChef to prove to his wife that he could do it, as he felt that he wasn’t ready.

Meanwhile, in an interesting twist in this latest instalment of MasterChef as contestants braced themselves for another double elimination, Chef Bjorn informed two contestants who thought they are definitely out of the race that there would be no eliminations in this round.

So Raj Shagaran Mahalingam and Gooi Jin Yi were saved. Ten contestants still remain to face the heat in the kitchen for another day.
