Young boy dies 19 months after his skull was crushed fighting murderer who tried to rape his mother

A teenager from Severodvinsk, northwest Russia has passed away 19 months after his skull was crushed in a fight as he tried to save his mother from being raped by a convicted murderer.

Despite his mother’s appeals to the authorities, pleading against their decision to allow a convict to live so close to children in their block, the authorities allowed 37-year-old released murderer, Roman Pronin, to live in the building.

One day, the man struck again. Breaking into 43-year-old Natalia Krapivina’s home, Roman repeatedly attacked her with a knife before trying to rape her.

Just then, 15-year-old Vanya Krapivin returned home from school and found the horrific scene of Roman straddling his blood-soaked mother. Acting quickly, the boy took a 3kg dumbbell and struck Roman.

Roman deflected the blow but the boy’s actions drew the assailant from his mother. Leaving Natalia on the ground, Roman turned on Vanya, snatched the dumbbell from him and pounded the boy over the head with it.

His skull crushed, Vanya collapsed. Believing the unconscious mother and son to be dead, Roman fled the bloodied apartment. The police, who arrived at the scene after being alerted by a neighbour, rushed the victims to the hospital.

While Natalia suffered 27 stab wounds, she escaped with her life intact thanks to her son. Vanya, however, suffered serious brain damage and lost almost all the frontal bone of his skull. The heroic boy also fell into a coma for nine months.

A massive fundraising campaign was launched for Vanya’s medical expenses, after doctors removed part of his brain and needed to place titanium plates to support the boy’s skull. Donations poured in and Vanya was treated by top Russian surgeon Leonid Roshal.

A year later, the boy showed “light signs of being conscious” after treatment. This June, he began to recognise his nurse and was able to eat porridge and mashed food.

Hopes for his recovery were renewed when Vanya became well enough to visit a rehabilitation centre in Moscow, one month later. Members of the public began to raise funds to send Vanya to Spain for further treatment.

In October, however, Vanya contracted the flu. Despite the doctor’s best efforts, the boy passed away last week.

Roman Pronin, who was sentenced to 14 years in jail over two attempted murder charges, now faces an additional murder charge after Vanya’s death. The authorities are also investigating how he was allowed to stay in Natalia’s building in the first place.

Natalia is also drawing flak for only visiting Vanya twice in the hospital after the ordeal they suffered. Natalia says that she was left deeply traumatised and unable to cope with what had happened after the attack.

Revealing that she blames herself, Natalia said that she turned to drinking to cope with the trauma. Seeking funds to treat Vanya before he passed away, Natalia told a television audience:

“I beg to be pardoned. And I want to ask you, please, help my son. I don’t remember what happened that day. Everybody now tells me that I am to blame for everything…I am ready to be treated. And I want to be with my son.”

She has not spoken to the press since her son’s death.

Beyond Ownership: This Startup Plans to Change How We Shop

Beyond Ownership: This Startup Plans to Change How We Shop

After Eric Tan’s grandmother passed, he frequently walked past the never-used medical bed that his family had scraped together funds in order to purchase for her. When he looked at the bed, he thought about this and other items that are very costly and often underused. This lead to his plans to found Sharent with his team in 2017. The Singaporean startup just released its app, which allows users to rent over 1,300 different products to other users. Sharent aims to promote a culture of sharing and sustainability.

When did you decide to found Sharent?

In October of 2017. I was 22 and I realised that many of us own too many assets that are wasted. I went deeper into what other problems are caused by our over consumption and decided that it was necessary to found Sharent.

What is Sharent’s mission?

Ultimately, we hope to create value for our users by allowing them to pursue a sustainable and shareable future. We also hope to venture into different areas to sharing economy.

Do you believe Sharent has a positive environmental and social impact? Why?

Yes. Because as sharing increases, over consumption will reduce production output and limit waste in terms of the amount of under-utilised assets sent to landfills. Sharing is great because it’s affordable for the lower and middle class and it also allows individuals to rent something they need or use for leisure activities.

What is your team most proud of, and where could you improve the most?

We are most proud of of growing the number of items offered in our inventory from our decentralised network. We are also proud to support many other like-minded organisations.

What is the most challenging aspect of running your business thus far?

We believe that the most challenging part of our work is changing the market’s perspective about renting and the understanding of Sharent and going beyond ownership.

Do you have advice for other entrepreneurs and startups in Singapore?

Be patient and stay calm, never be too excited about anything because excitement can lead to a bad move or a wrong decision.

Why did you choose to begin your operations in Singapore? Did you consider any other locations?

We choose Singapore because we are founded here; however, our potential markets include Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. Based on our research of available statistics Thailand and Vietnam are more receptive to sharing. Additionally the population is larger in these cities. As for Indonesia it’s also for the larger market and we have noticed that our fellow industry friends are doing better there.

ValuePenguin aims to educate entrepreneurs and small businesses about best business practices, especially about financial topics. With that in mind, we are interested in Sharent’s financial journey. How did your business first obtain funding?

We started by emailing potential investors. After a couple hundred times of failure, we went for networking sessions and searched for investors. At one of these events I found a willing angel investor that I was referred to. We were also funded by ESG and mentored by Quest Ventures after multiple rejections.

How did you succeed in fundraising, and what was the most difficult challenge you had to overcome?

We found that the keys to success to every fundraising are confidence and passion, the pitch and to asking and asking smartly. It is important to do your due diligence properly by knowing the investor before talking to them.

Did Sharent ever require additional financing later (e.g. working capital loan, asset purchase loan, equity, etc.)? If so, why?

Yes. This is because we need to scale our business and cash is king.

Did you consider any alternatives to traditional financing, such as crowdfunding? If so, was it helpful? Why?

We tried several crowdfunding platforms; however, the platforms were not helpful enough for our needs.

Wife tragically falls to death after jumping for photo taken by husband at cliff edge

31-year-old Jolandi le Roux fell to her death from a cliff edge in Cape Town, South Africa after jumping for a photo that was being taken by her husband, last week. The couple, who have been married for just over a year, regular visit the picnic area where Jolandi fell to her death – they even got married on a beach below the cliff last September.

The couple had been celebrating Jolandi’s birthday the day that she decided to pose for a picture that makes it look as though she was jumping over the sun. Some local press reports suggest the couple cross over a metal railing and ignored warning signs, in order to take the picture.

As Jolandi jumped for the photo, she lost her balance and fell off the cliffside. Her shocked husband, 33-year-old Andrew le Roux, climbed 100 metres down the dangerous mountain to rescue his wife.

When he was nine metres away from his wife, he could not go further and could already tell Jolandi was dead – she had suffered multiple head and body fractures as she plumetted down the mountain.

Rescue teams took three hours to reach Jolandi’s body and another three hours to bring her back to the top of the cliff. One paramedic, Henry Barlow, told the press that Andrew “risked his life” trying to reach is wife. He added: “It would have been suicide to go any further.”

A medical doctor and avid rock climber, Dr Matthew Young, revealed to the press that the mountain is “falling apart” and “it is not a nice place to be”.

S Iswaran draws praise for spending time to discuss S377A with residents unlike another PAP MP

Minister for Communications and Industry S Iswaran has won widespread praise after a resident in his West Coast GRC ward shared that he spent quite some time with her group, discussing Section 377A and other issues, when they visited him at his Meet-the-People session recently.

The positive experience the resident had has drawn comparisons to the sour encounter another resident had at the Meet-the-People session in his ward when his MP allegedly snubbed him.

Early last week, Nee Soon GRC resident Edward Foo visited his MP, Er Dr Lee Bee Wah, to hand her a Ready4Repeal petition filled with over 800 signatures from her constituents. Foo alleged that Er Dr Lee refused to speak with him and refused to personally accept the petition, directing him to pass it to one of her volunteers.

After Foo’s account went viral online, Er Dr Lee clarified that she did not leave the room at Foo had suggested but had moved away to a different table to attend to another resident. The PAP Nee Soon Branch also issued a clarification:

“We would like to clarify that both individuals who were residents of the GRC were seen by volunteer letter-writers, just like every other resident. The male resident indicated there was no need to write an appeal letter for him. Our volunteer wrote an appeal letter for the female resident.

“MP Er Dr Lee Bee Wah spoke to them briefly and moved on to speak to other residents about their issues.”

A day after PAP Nee Soon Branch responded to the issue, West Coast GRC resident Jolene Tan shared on Facebook that her MP, S Iswaran, stood in stark contrast to his ruling party colleague as he was not only willing to discuss Ready4Repeal with her but also took considerable time out of his Meet-the-People session to converse with her and her friends.

Revealing that she visited Mr Iswaran last Monday, Tan wrote on Facebook:

“Three of us went to see our MP, Mr S Iswaran, to discuss our concerns about Section 377A on Monday evening, in support of #Ready4Repeal. We were very grateful that he took time out of his MPS – almost an hour – to hear our concerns and discuss matters such as bullying, education, engagement and dialogue.

“We learned from the experience and we would encourage all members of society who have concerns about national issues to engage their parliamentary representatives.”

Several netizens on social media showered praise upon Mr Iswaran and compared him more favorably to Er Dr Lee, opining that this encounter makes the Nee Soon GRC MP “look rude in comparison”:

Chua Jiakai Jeremy: If only LBW had shown such grace.”
Timothy Ang: You all lucky wor, the other one MP siam her resident so fast wor, like seeing hantu”
Chen Chen Koh: “I have heard pretty nice things out Mr Iswaran, from folks who have worked with him.”
Hime Kang: “This makes LBW look rude in comparison sia. Yishun GRC folks, do you want someone like LBW to continue to represent your GRC? Do you think she have been doing a great job of managing your GRC so far? Think about it next time before you cast your votes for next GE.”
Charles Lee: “This, is what an MP has to do. That other one should get lost!”
Kevin Lee: “When a member of parliament actually gave a damn.”
Mathia Lee: “At least an MP who listens to the very real problems bullying and discrimination.”
Mei Ling: “Iswaran has shown he is a knowledgeable and compassionate person in past instances towards things in general. I have a good regard for him.”
Dinesh Bora: “Better than what a certain MP did. Kudos to him for listening.”

Jurong-Clementi Town Council asks resident to scale down elaborate Christmas decorations

0

Jurong-Clementi Town Council has revealed that it has asked a resident at Block 351 Clementi Avenue 2 to scale down the elaborate Christmas decorations that they had placed on a ledge outside their second-storey HDB unit.

The rather beautiful decorations featured a mannequin wearing a festive costume, surrounded by balls of different sizes and colours, against a gold background. The decorations also featured leafy decorations strung up on the railing and on the edge of the corridor ceiling.

Sharing a picture of the elaborate arrangement to citizen journalism portal Stomp, a netizen named Augustana expressed concerns over the safety hazards the decor poses to passers-by on the ground floor, especially little children as there is a playground near the foot of the block.

Jurong-Clementi Town Council has since told the publication that they paid a visit to the resident and asked them to scale down and shift the arrangements:

“We visited the place and spoke to the resident, who appreciates our concern over the safety aspect. We have checked the fastening method and found that the decoration pieces are adequately secured.

“However, as the decoration had encroached onto the common area, we had asked the resident to scale down the decoration pieces and shift them to a place which is safer for everyone. The resident understood our advice.”

Khaw Boon Wan on ILS dispute, “What’s next? Land transport, too?”

Singapore’s Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan responded to a Facebook post from his Malaysian counterpart on Wednesday, December 12. Khaw said to some members of the media that the video that Anthony Loke posted “contains a few inaccuracies,” and that Malaysia seemed to employ a “technical excuse” in asking for Singapore’s airspace management to be altered. However, he also said he was confident that a solution would be found.

“The key point is if it were a technical concern, with goodwill, I am confident a mutually satisfactory technical solution can be found,” Khaw said.

The Malaysian Transport Minister’s Facebook post started this way, “Hi Singapore, “Seletar Airport is yours, but Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia is ours.”  Loke then went on to enumerate the reasons why Malaysia was opposed to the ILS of Seletar Airport, and why Malaysia was urging “Singapore to withdraw the ILS announcement and to amend the flight path as per our request.”

Loke claimed in the video he posted that the flight path used by the ILS at Seletar Airport would encroach into Malaysia’s airspace. His concern is that the ILS, which would take into effect by January 3, 2019, would fly over Pasir Gudang, a town in Johor Baru.

This would, he claimed, cause unnecessary height limits for buildings in the town, because of the safety height buffer of between 54 meters and 145 meters on the flight path. A large area would be affected, according to the video, “from Pasir Gudang,” “up north to Ayer Tawar (Johor)” and “almost to Kota Tinggi.”

Loke said on the video, “We can’t even build tall buildings in Pasir Gudang if we allow that flight path. Our position is very clear. We are not against Seletar, but as far as the descending flight path is concerned, it cannot be over Pasir Gudang.”

He ended the video by asking Singapore to change its flight path.

Khaw also told reporters Malaysia’s understanding of Singapore’s Instrument Landing System (ILS) also has inaccuracies and sought to explain exactly how an ILS works.

“ILS is like an auto-pilot in an aircraft, it’s a tool for the pilot. The pilot can always have a manual intervention if security concerns require it. So, auto-pilot doesn’t mean the pilot doesn’t have control. The pilot retains full control throughout the flight.”

Khaw expressed his astonishment at Malaysia’s request for Singapore to change its flight path, saying that it has worked very well for years. “So I’m truly baffled. I wonder why.”

“We have achieved so much together. And then now, out of the blue in October, suddenly they started a row in air, in water. What’s next? Land transport, too? I wonder why.”

Singapore files UNCLOS declaration to settle maritime dispute with negotiations

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said on Thursday, December 14, announced that Singapore filed a declaration under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) at the United Nations in New York on December 12, for the purpose of making sure that no signatory will unilaterally begin third-party arbitration concerning issues involving boundary disputes.

Article 298(1)(a) of UNCLOS prevents any entity from unilaterally starting third party arbitration or adjudication. Meaning that no UNCLOS signatory nations cannot, on their own, start third-party arbitration or adjudication against Singapore, regarding boundary issues. Neither can Singapore, on its own, start third-party arbitration or adjudication versus other nations in similar disputes.

According to a statement from the MFA, “Singapore believes that maritime boundary delimitation disputes are best resolved through negotiations, in order to reach an amicable settlement acceptable to all of the parties.

However, if this cannot be achieved, Singapore is prepared to settle such a dispute by recourse to an appropriate international third-party dispute settlement procedure, on terms mutually agreed to by the parties.

Should a dispute arise that cannot be resolved through negotiations, Singapore will work with the other States Parties to agree on the choice of forum and the specific issues to be decided, in order that the matter can be submitted to arbitration or adjudication. This is preferable to one party taking another unilaterally to arbitration or adjudication, without prior mutual agreement on these key issues.

Singapore hopes that by engaging each other, the two governments will reach a swift and amicable resolution, in accordance with international law.”

The MFA also said that Malaysia has already been informed of the filing of the declaration under UNCLOS, even as both nations are preparing for bilateral talks concerning territorial disputes in the middle of January.

Khaw Boon Wan, Singapore’s Transport Minister, said that Malaysia has begun to de-escalate tension on the ground. Only one ship from Malaysia is still in the territorial waters of Singapore, already fewer than the 3 that were there last Friday, December 7.

In October, Malaysia had unilaterally decided to expand the port limits in Johor Baru, with government vessels entering Singapore’s maritime territory several times. This sparked the latest round of tensions between the two countries.

Singaporeans apparently more satisfied with telecommunication services, including Wireless@SG

0

Singapore – The results for the latest edition of the Consumer Awareness and Satisfaction Survey (“CASS”) are in. Findings show that there has been an overall increase in the satisfaction of consumers with regards to Singapore’s key telecommunication services.

CASS 2018 was commissioned by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the leading organization for Singapore’s digital transformation through an Infocomm media industry.

The survey was conducted in order to better understand the level of satisfaction, consumer awareness and usage with key media and telecommunication services in Singapore such as fixed line telephones and broadband, mobile data, international roaming services, customer care and wireless@SG services.

A total of 1,500 household representatives were approached between March and May 2018 to take the survey.

From a range of 1 (“Very Dissatisfied”) to 5 (“Very Satisfied”), the respondents were asked to rate their level of satisfaction with the quality, price competitiveness and variety of the different services offered by the telecommunication service providers.

Fixed Line Telephone Services

Based on the last CASS which was conducted in 2014, there has been a decrease in subscriptions to fixed line telephone services. This remains true across all housing types, namely HBD flats (1-2 rooms, 3 rooms, 4 rooms and 5+rooms), condominiums or private flats, landed property and others; except HBD 1-2 rooms wherein they increased in fixed line telephone subscriptions.

The main reasons for discontinuing subscriptions to these services was the ownership of a mobile telephone line that served as a replacement (82.9%) followed by the residents not being at home most of the time (15%).

As for the satisfaction levels for fixed-line telephone services, the subscribers’ responses remained relatively the same for the quality of service and price competitiveness compared to the previous CASS results. For the quality of service, the mean satisfaction score was 4.01 compared to 4.12 in 2014 and 3.78 compared to 3.82 in 2014 for the price competitiveness.

Mobile Voice and Message Services

Across the 13 years covered by CASS’ periodic surveys, there has been a steady increase in mobile voice and message services subscribers. This year, a total of 96.5% of the respondents are subscribed to these services. Subscriptions to mobile voice and message services were close to 100% across all age groups and housing types.

As for the type of activities being conducted on mobile phones, social media ranked the top with 77.8% of the residents engaging in social networking. This was followed by traditional call and messaging and work-related activities.

Satisfaction levels for these services in different environments such as the general outdoors, public parks, home and office premises, malls and underground tunnels showed an increase with values at a 4-point except in underground tunnels which was at 3.16-point.

Fixed Broadband Services

Satisfaction for the quality of service and price competitiveness of fixed broadband services increased with a mean score of 3.68 and 3.55, respectively. However, the satisfaction levels for the variety of services available decreased across all service providers such as SingNet, StarHub Online, M1 Broadband and MyRepublic.

Mobile Data Services

Out of the 1,500 respondents, almost 84% are subscribed to mobile data on their phones with 78.3% under 4G mobile network. When it comes to age groups using mobile data, the 60 years and above bracket doubled in size, from 25% in 2014 to 58.1% in 2018. All the other age groups also showed an increase.

For those who did not subscribe to mobile data services, the main reason was the lack of a need for mobile data (79.8%).

Satisfaction with mobile data coverage in different locations acquired a 4-point average except for underground tunnels which got a 3.09-point level of satisfaction.

Out of quality of service, price competitiveness and variety of services available, respondents were least satisfied with the price of mobile data services which got a 3.64-point mean score.

Customer care services also showed an improvement in mean satisfaction scores. This includes the time to resolve complaints and customer hotline waiting time.

IMDA’s Deputy Chief Executive and Director-General, Ms. Aileen Chia, said: “The increased take-up of, and consumer satisfaction with, our telecommunication services are encouraging signs pointing to a positive attitude towards a digital future and a willingness of our service providers to meet consumers’ rising service quality expectation. I urge our service providers to continue to innovate in their service offerings and make use of technology to deliver even better services to their customers and delight them.”

Furthermore, more consumers are now using Wireless@SG, from 20.8% in 2014 to 43.5% this year. Wireless@SG is the largest free Wi-Fi network in Singapore which is accessible for free at more than 20,000 hotspots across the country.

Areas for Improvement

The respondents shared their comments on key areas for improvement, all of which focused on better customer service in terms of reduced waiting time, prompt feedback and updates on complaints and improved competency of customer service agents.

Grabfood driver stops and prays along the street while waiting for orders, gains much respect from netizens

Singapore – The scene is set in front of an eatery along a quiet street in Katong on December 12. Facebook user Rudy Corleone saw a GrabFood driver waiting for his order to arrive which he would then deliver to his client. While waiting, the driver sets up a plastic sheet on the floor, uses his bag to stop the mat from being blown away, and commences with his daily prayer.

It is a religious practice for Muslims to pray 5 times a day, once before dawn, another two during the early and late afternoon, once more right after sunset and lastly at night.

A series of photos captured by Corleone shows the dedication of this Grab employee. He is making great use of his spare time by immersing himself in prayer.

Ginna Arman stated that the actions of the driver were not for showing off or a mere act; especially since Corleone took the photos discreetly. The netizen shared respect to the man for being “such a noble and genuine [example] to the young and old generations”.

Netizen Wan As-Sahar also added that this scenario is not something new in Singapore. He himself is one of the citizens who would perform his prayers wherever possible, mainly because of the distance of the mosque from his home and workplace.

Meanwhile, there were some netizens who saw this as a breach of privacy and expressed their disapproval regarding the pictures being taken. Suresh Hans explained that the driver is “doing a faithful duty to his religion” and deserves some privacy.
