Grabfood driver stops and prays along the street while waiting for orders, gains much respect from netizens

Singapore – The scene is set in front of an eatery along a quiet street in Katong on December 12. Facebook user Rudy Corleone saw a GrabFood driver waiting for his order to arrive which he would then deliver to his client. While waiting, the driver sets up a plastic sheet on the floor, uses his bag to stop the mat from being blown away, and commences with his daily prayer.

It is a religious practice for Muslims to pray 5 times a day, once before dawn, another two during the early and late afternoon, once more right after sunset and lastly at night.

A series of photos captured by Corleone shows the dedication of this Grab employee. He is making great use of his spare time by immersing himself in prayer.

Netizen Wan As-Sahar also added that this scenario is not something new in Singapore. He himself is one of the citizens who would perform his prayers wherever possible, mainly because of the distance of the mosque from his home and workplace.

Meanwhile, there were some netizens who saw this as a breach of privacy and expressed their disapproval regarding the pictures being taken. Suresh Hans explained that the driver is “doing a faithful duty to his religion” and deserves some privacy.

Singaporean angrily condemns Tan Tock Seng A&E staff for unwarranted aggressive behaviour

0

A Singaporean has lashed out at Tan Tock Seng Hospital after a staff at the hospital’s emergency department allegedly behaved aggressively towards him.

Revealing that he encountered the staff late last month when he admitted a friend who suffered a fall to the emergency department, Facebook user Jai Ragavaan recalled:

“On the 26/11/2018 about 2300hrs I brought in someone to the A&E via a ambulance because my friend had a ball fall and he needed immediate medical attention. Only to know that I was being handled the worst person ever in my life!
“Upon registering myself as a caregiver at the observation department I went into the emergency unit to see the condition of my friend…I approached a lady to ask for some advise about my friends condition(Didnt know she was the doctor). The lady advised me to go over to the counter in the A&E department itself to seek advice from HCA RAY.
“So being clueless over the condition of my friend I went towards the staff and *seek advise from the staff whether should I wait for the doctor or should I leave? I also added by saying I have his belongings with me as it all flew when he had a fall. All the staff could answer me “if you want to go, you may go”.
“So at this point I wanted to give a benefit of doubt and seek advise from him again for the same concerned as above. Again he replied “oh you freind which bed!? That one doctor already see you can go if u want to go” Trust me he was extremely rude and he still didn’t tell me where to deposit my friends belonging which was my main concerned.
“So I went to see if my friend was conscious and realised he wasn’t and I then I and to mention to the staff “Please have humanity because I have a friend who is admitted here via ambulance because of a bad fall and I am lost on what to do here and that is why I came to you for advice on his belongings as I definitely can’t bring it back with me”
“What the staff did after this was the most shocking part…”

Jai Ragavaan continued: “The staff came out of the counter because he was pissed just because I had to ask advice and perhaps raise my voice to say my concern and he came forward to BASH me up!!!!!”

Alleging that the staff challenged him to call the police while spewing profanities, the netizen recalled:

“He was not able to touch me at all that is because I took a step behind when he came out of the counter. Immediately I told him ” don’t maje any Decision that makes me to call the police… He again challenged me saying ” call the police I don’t care” He also quoted the word F**K about two times.
“At this point the auxiliary officer cane forward to pull him back(HCA RAY) as he was very aggressive toward me. I immediately asked his name and he almost took out if name tag to bang it on the counter top.
“It was very clear That everyone of his colleagues knew what he did was wrong and they drag him inside so that they can stop this unethical service /attitude of his.I told the auxiliary office I would like to lodge a police report. And all he mentioned was “You want make report go ahead but don’t make issue here! “
“Seriously I don’t think so anyone would like to be treated this way when they are already going through a trauma because of my friends condition.”

Adding that he “left the hospital with a heavy heart” and that he “could not even sleep for the next two days peacefully as the incident kept striking me,” Jai Ragavaan revealed that he submitted a feedback form on the matter, besides calling TTSH’s management to lodge complaints.

Then yesterday, the Singaporean received this response from TTSH:

Despite being assured that the staff has been counselled, the indignant netizen has blasted TTSH for “covering the hospital”. He added:

I would like to mention if an elderly were to be in my situation is this how our senior citizens are treated? Is this why MR LKY suffered and put so much of his hard work that Singaporean or the innocents are being treated this way!?”

Demanding a public apology from the staff and asking how TTSH could employ such a staff, Jai Ragavaan vowed to never visit TTSH ever again.

I would like to take this platform to pen down something that happened recently to me Which should not be happening in…

In a subsequent post, Jai Ragavaan added: “I practice what I preach! Coming from the Service industry for many years there is no exception towards any unprofessional approach towards your customer…Do it and you shall be dealt with it…”

“Remember organizations have improvised tremendously with full CCTV coverage with audio thus there is no way u hide if you do something you should not! But if you’re innocent then let it be.

“Ample of training and counselling given prior to ground operations thus there is no excuse for one to behave in a manner whereby you loose your mind over your customers who raises voice at you just because you as a staff was unethical towards them. Thanks to all the service oriented souls who have texted me over the pass 24hrs…”

Pearl Island 6 Bedrooms bungalow for sale for $26.3 million

0

A 6 bedroom bungalow is up for sale at the exclusive Pearl Island for $26.3 million. The 10,215 sq. ft. single family home with 6 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms, is marketed by List Sotheby’s International Realty.

Pearl Island is in Singapore’s Central Region and is an island within an island.

The island in Sentosa is 10 minutes drive from the Central Business District, and a mere 20 minutes from Singapore’s Changi Airport. The tree-lined boulevard of the development is flanked by 2 world-class golf courses. It is also Singapore’s only waterfront community of high-end residences and a marina/yacht club.

Pearl Island evokes a sense of romanticism of a private island, and is alluring because it is an ultra-private community and a sanctuary. To build upon the concept of an island within an island, each bungalow is conceived as an island, with a shallow pool of water surrounding it.

As befits waterfront living, water is used as a unifying factor linking all the individual plots, creating a body of water, with the bungalows likened to boulders sitting in the water.

Luxury property prices in Singapore surged to become the world’s fastest appreciating market globally

A recent research report by List Sotheby’s International Realty said that Singapore’s luxury property segment saw a 42 per cent drop quarter-on-quarter. The report said the local luxury property segment as a whole took a hit after the property cooling measures with 13 Good Class Bungalows (GCBs) being sold along with 1 bungalow in Sentosa Cove and 61 luxury apartments.

This is a drop of 42% from the 8 GCBs, 4 Sentosa Cove bungalows and 119 luxury apartments sold in Q2 2018. List Sotheby’s said these figures show that the cooling measures have a greater impact on the luxury property segment of Sentosa Cove and luxury apartment segments than on the GCB segment.

The reduced sales in the first 2 luxury property segments could be attributed to a drop in foreign and permanent resident (PR) buyers who are hit by the higher ABSD rates, said the niche real estate services company. It added that as GCBs are restricted properties which only locals can buy, the segment was relatively more resilient.

GCBs are restricted properties and only Singapore citizens are eligible for ownership. An earlier report by List Sotheby’s noted that in recent years, GCB buyers tend to be families who are upgrading from smaller bungalows, Singaporean entrepreneurs in their late 30s as well as newly-minted high-net-worth (HNW) citizens. This group is likely to continue to support the GCB market in the luxury property segment.

While foreigners are allowed to own bungalows in Sentosa Cove, the additional buyer’s stamp duty (ABSD) is still a daunting factor to a foreign buyer. The cooling measures involve raising the ABSD for home buyers and reducing the loan-to-value (LTV) ratio by 5 percentage points for all housing loans granted by financial institutions.

‘Enough on airspace issue’-Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke

Anthony Loke Siew Fook, the Transport Minister of Malaysia, is declining to comment further on the issue of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) that is to be implemented in Singapore’s Seletar Airport by January 3 of next year.

He said to members of the press on Thursday, December 13, “enough has been said,” in the context of the ILS.

Malaysia has asked Singapore to change its plans for the Seletar ILS, which they claim encroaches into their airspace and is a detriment to the development of the town on Pasir Gudang, in Johor Baru, due to the narrow height buffer for the flight path prescribed by the ILS, which would make building tall buildings a problem for residents of Pasir Gudang.

Malaysia and Singapore have been butting heads over the issue for the past week, with the former requesting amendments to the ILS and the latter insisting this would be unnecessary.

Loke himself posted a video on Facebook in the early morning of December 12, explaining why Malaysia has issues with the Seletar Airport ILS, to which his counterpart in Singapore, Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan, responded on the same day saying that the video had “a few inaccuracies”.

At this point, Loke seems to be ready to leave the matter to technical experts, who will be discussing the matter in the middle of January.

Loke told reporters today, “Let the two sides sit down and negotiate, both dies will meet in mid-January. I will leave it to the technical experts on both sides to sort it out.”

Singapore said on December 12 that in a meeting on November 29 between the civil aviation authorities from both nations, it had told Malaysia of the necessity of putting instrument flight procedures for approached to Seletar Airport from both the north and south. Furthermore, Singapore’s Ministry of Transport refuted claims from Malaysia that implementing ILS procedures for flight approaches to Seletar Airport form the north violates Malaysia’s sovereignty.

Yamaha Motor will also invest US$150 million into Grab as part of the partnership agreement.

It will leverage on robotics technology, Yamaha’s social initiatives, and mobility innovations.

Leong Sze Hian was allegedly barred from posting bail for TOC editor due to “pending court case” involving PM Lee

Prominent blogger and ex-President of human rights NGO Maruah, Leong Sze Hian, has confirmed that he was rejected from bailing The Online Citizen (TOC) editor Terry Xu out after Xu was charged in court this morning, due to his own ongoing court case involving Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Xu, who is facing a lawsuit for publishing an article that made allegations of corruption against prominent politicians, was charged this morning with one count of criminal defamation. Yesterday, Xu refused to sign the charge sheet “as there was nothing to indicate the signature was meant to acknowledge the charge and not an admission of guilt.”

Local activist and and filmmaker Lynn Lee has since reported on Facebook that a pre-trial conference has been set for 8 Jan 2019 and that bail for Xu was set for $5,000.

Leong Sze Hian has since told The Independent that he wanted to post bail for Xu but was rejected from being the bailor due to his own ongoing court case. In a statement to this publication, Leong said:

“Leong Sze Hian has just been rejected as the bailor because he has “pending court case” (Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong suing him for defamation) for Terry Xu who was charged in court this morning for criminal defamation.”

Terry Xu confirmed to this publication that it is true that Leong was barred from posting bail for him. He said, however, that “no reason was given” as to why Leong was stopped from bailing him out.

PM Lee commenced legal proceedings against Leong for defamation, after Leong shared an article on his Facebook page that alleged that the head of government helped launder 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds.

Leong, who earlier rejected the notion that he deliberately set out to malign the PM with malicious intent, revealed yesterday that he will be representing himself in the court case.

Meanwhile, several local activists like Lynn Lee, Kirsten Han, and Roy Ngerng among others are standing in support with Xu.

One activist, community worker Jolovan Wham, shared this picture of himself at the state courts, holding a sheet of paper that asks the authorities to drop the charges against Xu and the writer of the contentious article. The post has received over 170 reactions so far:

SMRT worker’s foot amputated in most serious trackside accident since the deaths of two young trainees

The national broadsheet confirmed today that the SMRT worker, who was involved in the accident near Joo Koon MRT station yesterday that suspended train services on a part of the East-West Line, had to have his right foot amputated yesterday after it got crushed in the accident that occurred on the tracks.

This is the most serious trackside accident since the fatal accident in March 2016, in which two young trainees were killed by an oncoming train as they were led on the tracks to investigate a possible train fault.

SMRT was fined a hefty $400,000 after investigations later showed that safety protocols, that would have prevented the deaths, were not implemented.

This is also the most serious accident, and perhaps the very first accident, to have occurred during CEO Neo Kian Hong’s leadership of the transport operator.

Yesterday, SMRT reported that a worker suffered injuries to his right foot as he was preparing for an engineering vehicle to move back to the depot following maintenance works, on the track.

The national broadsheet has since reported that the worker had to have his right foot amputated after he was “injured by a track tamping vehicle, which is used to compact the ballast that supports the tracks.”

The worker, a father of three in his late fifties, is still in shock over the accident. Two of his three adult children told the press that their father has been warded at the National University Hospital’s intensive care unit and is in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Revealing that their father is able to chat normally with his family and coworkers, the children said that their father is still in a state of shock.

Netizens responding to the worker’s plight expressed their sympathies and asked SMRT to give the worker a new job if he still wishes to work. Some have also demanded answers from SMRT:

SMRT said yesterday that it will launch a full investigation into the accident: “Workplace safety is a priority for us, and the maintenance teams observed a safety timeout this morning to remind them of the importance of safety.

“Our immediate concern is for our maintenance staff who is being treated at the hospital, and we are providing the necessary care and support to him and his family.”

National Transport Workers’ Union executive secretary Melvin Yong, who also serves as a ruling party parliamentarian said that the union will be offering support to the worker and his family.

Yong said in a Facebook post: “The Union will be assisting the injured worker and his family, and we are relieved to know that he is currently in stable condition. We will be working closely with the company to investigate the cause of the incident, and to review the necessary workplace safety measures.”

How China’s one-child policy has resulted in millions of single men, plus South East Asian women sold into marriage

The one-child policy that China had for years resulted in a severe gender imbalance, with as many as 33 to34 million men lacking life partners. This has led to bridal searches in countries in Eastern Europe, such as the Ukraine, where prospective grooms could pay up to US $147,000 to the families of brides.

However, it has become more cost-effective, and therefore more common, for new brides to come out of poorer South East Asian countries, such as Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, where brides typically cost between US $10,000 to 15,000. A portion of this amount goes to the bride’s family, another portion to the marriage broker.

Whatever is left goes to the bride. Often, she gets nothing at all.

The driving force between women agreeing to such arrangements: poverty, and the accompanying obligation these women feel to help their families financially.

However, the quest for brides can turn into kidnapping and actual human trafficking, which is what happened with 16 Indonesian young women, many of whom are still teenagers, who had come to China ostensibly to work, but some of whom were sold by marriage brokers and held against their will.

Mimi Vu is the director of advocacy at the Pacific Links Foundation, which fights bride trafficking in the region. A Vice report quotes her as saying, “It’s a really shady business. Because they usually take those who are ethnically minorities or impoverished, there aren’t any statistics that we are confident enough to share. We only know of the girls who made it back home, we don’t know how many girls are still in China. It’s absolutely bleak.”

There are some success stories of happy brides and grooms, and financial assistance given to the families of the brides.

But there are also stories of domestic abuse, or when women have been forced into prostitution after failed marriages, or even detained because of China’s immigration law.

But this hasn’t stopped the outflow of brides. In another report, this time for the South China Morning Post, Chou Bun Eng, the vice-chair of Cambodia’s National Committee for Counter Trafficking, said, “Families are now looking to their daughters to see the ‘interest’ they can return to them.”

There are 10,000 Cambodian brides listed in official registries in Guangdong, Guizhou, and Yunnan, provinces in the south of China.

Chou also said, “Marriage to Chinese men is not bad by its nature, but problems start when it is done illegally. But problems start when it is done illegally through ‘intermediaries’.”

Upon arriving in China, the photos of South East Asian brides are uploaded on dating sites, with accompanying prices. Younger and more attractive women fetch the highest prices.

The United Nations has classified women who are paid, or bought, or sold as brides and moved from one country to the next as victims of human trafficking, even if they consented to the transaction.

Brokers caught in Cambodia can be jailed for as long as 15 years, though there have been very few convictions. They pay the women to keep silent, and since these women need the money, the system of buying and selling brides has continued.

Amos Yee’s mother wants apology from Melissa Chen, tells her to “refrain from posting on the internet whilst menstruating”

Amos Yee’s mother, Mary Toh, has once again stepped in to defend her son. Following the video posted by Melissa Chen, one of Amos Yee’s former supporters and the activist who campaigned for Yee to secure asylum in the United States, Mary wrote a post on Facebook championing her son’s right to free speech, and asking for an apology from Chen.

https://theindependent.sg.sg/melissa-chen-the-activist-who-helped-amos-yee-seek-asylum-in-the-us-now-wants-him-deported-says-he-is-a-stain-on-the-human-race/

The main takeaway of Chen’s Facebook video was that, because of Yee’s blatant pro-pedophilia stance, Melissa said, “I am compelled to say Amos needs to be deported from the United States, and if he, in the process, gets sent back to jail in Singapore for going AWOL on National Service, I would find it extremely difficult to actually sympathise with that.”

Chen also added that Yee was no longer a child and had to be held accountable for his actions as an adult.

Her concluding remarks were that, “Amos is a stain on Singapore, and a stain on the human race.”

In a Facebook post yesterday, Mary Toh wrote, “There is a way to disagree with Amos’ positions on pedophilia (Which obviously I’m against), whilst not creating the negative PR against the free speech cause that was sparked by Amos’ case, that human rights activists in Singapore have fought for greatly, saying Amos should be ‘deported from the US’ because of his opinions on pedophilia is unintentionally doing just that.”

https://www.facebook.com/marytohab/posts/1082500165260563?__xts__[0]=68.ARBfurijK2W9GHzf1J51rtkGw18Q0arCmSfoW7z2f47Rlnw8zHzuIfbgQEN5d5ADYiiPjK3omYFVxoRO7nFGb6PsF3qhpStXc3wyuOY1840J0ZHGNISY3NZ9XFlvGedicecAZVmNR6dLW2FsfIBu_d6v8uy1pHUZAa53woaziTNdkFeEnA_yK2viAZaBbEYyVMfe0TrzX3Ym3yiJ-FoJXUognuyAL3SbyD9AZLAApNuD6Tgr2Ffv61pHXdYhaNnLjOCUa736rUPWkLoI5A8ZwmhsNIUBcNbJ92dqmBIAtPtyA3XzQUxfTecRlxU78x97ouC_5HC9inrtwhNcm_-OYA&__tn__=-R

She added that Yee’s stance on pedophilia should not be used as a point against free speech.

Toh then went on to compare Melissa Chen’s activism and her son’s pro-pedophilia movement. She said, “Melissa is a person who champions and surrounds herself with people who support platforming: the KKK, White Supremacists, Neo-Nazis and Alex Jones, people and groups that from my knowledge, advocate (and sometimes even directly cause) actual violence to people. Amos unlike those groups, has never advocated for direct harm to any child”.

She also calls out Chen for her “inconsistent” views on free speech.

Toh then wrote, “I feel like she made that video against Amos based on completely biased misinformation spread about him by haters, and I think she should really refrain from posting on the internet whilst menstruating”.

Following this, she added that Yee has reached out privately to Chen, and that she hoped Chen accepts Yee’s invitation to talk.

Yee’s mother concludes her post rather backhandedly, saying, “After Melissa speaks with Amos, I sincerely hope that she takes down her video, and then issue a public apology, because anyone who’s actually reasonable would know that this public statement she made is just embarrassing for her, and this is embarrassing in contrast to Amos, my son who now defends pedophiles, so you know it’s bad”.

However, in light of free speech, should Chen not be entitled to her own views as well?

An embargo on Huawei will severely disrupt global supply chains – analysts

In the wake of Huawei’s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou’s arrest on December 1, as requested by the United States (along with her extradition), relationships with China are looking to be strained. The arrest, along with intentions to ban the the technology giant from some markets, could severely disrupt global supply chains and push the US out from the booming digital economy.

The arrest of Meng Wanzhou, daughter of 74-year-old Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, had the unfortunate timing of sharing the same day with the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Markets all over the world went down, after fears that the meeting’s intentions, which were to discuss eliminating trade tariffs between the two leading nations, would be for nought, thanks to Wanzhou’s arrest.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s attempt at quelling such fears was to deliver this tweet on December 7 – “China talks are going very well!”

Bail of USD 7.5 million has since been set for Wanzhou on December 11, but her arrest came at a time when carriers around the world are looking to spend billions of dollars on equipment for fifth-generation wireless technology. Huawei has spent years preparing for this massive opportunity, and the incident with Wanzhou is the equivalent of throwing a spanner in the works.

Analysts are concerned that going against Huawei is a big, bad move that could push the U.S. out of the future digital economy and stop the flow of supply chains around the world.

According to another news source, a recent study from Global System for Mobile Communication Association and Global TD-LTE Initiative predicts that by 2025, almost 1.2 billion people around world will operate on 5G networks, 30 percent of them in China.

A new era for the digital economy is on the horizon, with China set to become the world’s largest 5G market. Alienating China in any way would cause a severe disruption in the global supply network.

As Huawei’s part in the global 5G value chain is integral, Wanzhou’s arrest has therefore not only instilled fear in many suppliers but has also been linked with measures to prevent companies from China from taking part in the building of 5G networks in local markets.

Cracking down on Huawei will cause unwanted, negative effects on technology giants Microsoft, Intel and Qualcomm and upset the world’s 5G system.

The worry now is that the Chinese will not welcome companies from the U.S. and Canada to share in China’s digital economy, thanks to how Wanzhou’s case has been handled.

Analysts have weighed in on the matter:

“Huawei is the largest company in China.”

“Attacking Huawei is like attacking the root of China.”

“It is worth monitoring if top components suppliers from other countries beyond the U.S., such as Taiwan’s TSMC, Japan’s Murata Manufacturing and South Korea’s LG Display, will also be under pressure to stop supplying key parts to the Chinese company if Washington imposes a ban on acquiring American parts.”

– Jonah Cheng, chief investment officer at J&J Investment and a UBS veteran tech analyst to the Nikkei Asian Review

“Huawei is one of the biggest buyers for technology components and semiconductors as it controls more than 27% market share in making telecom equipment and 14% in the global smartphone market.”

“An embargo on Huawei, should it happen, could halt operations and result in significant supply chain disruptions in the near term.”

– Bernstein analyst Mark Li
