Traverse the timezones and keep jet lag at bay with these tips

0
Don't let jet lag ruin your travels. Photo: YouTube screen grab

Travelling sure is fun, but moving quickly across different timezones can bring on the pain-in-the-butt sensation that is jet lag. We’re all familiar with the feelings—extreme fatigue that can be accompanied by indigestion, bowel issues, insomnia, loss of appetite, and problems with memory and focus.

Jet lag is classified as a temporary sleep disorder. The effects of jet lag can linger on for hours, days and even more than a week, depending on the person’s age, overall health and stress levels. It can take up to a day for each time zone crossed for your body to adjust to the local time. Its effects are generally worse when you “lose time” traveling west to east.

People are affected by jet lag in multiple and unique ways; in fact, some claim to never feel jet lagged at all.

It’s all about our bodily routines of sleeping and eating. When we cross timezones, the changes in time throw our bodies into disarray and disrupt those inner cycles, which are called circadian rhythms.

Our circadian rhythms, or biological clocks, take their cues from things like light exposure, mealtimes, social engagement, daily activities and sleep routines.

The good news is that jet lag can be dealt with and its effects minimised by following these expert tips.
The effects are different for each person, so it’s advisable to find what methods work best for you. For those with medical conditions that need care, consult your doctor when it comes to coping with jet lag.

Tweak your before-flight schedule

If you’re someone who follows extremely strict schedules for sleeping and eating, try to be more flexible in the days leading up to your long-haul flight. If your destination is “ahead” of your current timezone, try sleeping a little earlier every day so that the adjustment won’t be a huge shock to your system. If you’re going somewhere that is “behind” your current timezone, try sleeping a little later to slowly adjust.

Get some solid rest prior to the flight

Most of us find ourselves rushing to complete tasks and pack last minute items in the days and hours leading up to the flight. In fact, sleep tends to take a back sleep. I myself I have thought on many occasions, “I’ll just sleep on the plane.” This is a mistake you do not want to make. Getting a good night’s rest before the flight is important to starting the journey fresh and well-rested.

Adjust your in-flight schedule

Focus on adjusting to the timezone you will be arriving into. Find out what time it is in your destination and tweak your snoozing times accordingly. If you’re really tired and need a longer sleep, set an alarm for the “morning” in the place you’re going to.

Get a flight with a stopover

Breaking up a long-haul flight with a few hours’ stopover is a good way of giving your body time to adjust to the new timezone. You can walk around, stretch and eat. Make sure not to choose a flight with a stopover that’s too long, because that extends the overall trip time and can lead to extreme tiredness.

Choose a flight that arrives during the day

If it’s possible, select a flight that arrives in the daytime. That way, your body can adjust to the sunlight. You’ll be more keen to try to stay awake and will feel properly tired by bed time, but at least you’ll start your trip off sleeping at the right time. If you’re really exhausted, try to at least wait for the sun to set before sleeping.

Enjoy a drink or two only

A drink or two on the plane to calm the nerves and get into a relaxed state isn’t bad, as long as it’s followed up by a lot of water. Getting overly excited by the free in-flight alcohol and drinking a lot will dehydrate you and contribute to fatigue and sluggishness.

Chuck out the sleeping pills

Some people like to pop a sleeping pill and just drift off into dreamland for the duration of the flight. While this might sound like an ideal solution to avoiding the discomforts of flying, it will interfere with your natural body clock and will leave you feeling groggy and sluggish on arrival.

Stay hydrated and eat well

Try to keep hydrated and eat properly during the flight and when you arrive at your destination. Your body, which will feel exhausted by the changes in timezones, will thank you for keeping it fed and watered.

Look for the sun

When you arrive, try to spend some time in the sun the first chance that you get. You can top up on your vitamin D while your body adjusts to the natural light and time of day.

When I recently arrived in London after flying from the Philippines, I was exhausted. I felt the jet lag hit me hard when I looked at the cloudy, grey London sky and could not figure out what time it was. It looked, and with its crisp wind felt, like it could be late afternoon or dusk, but the local time told me it was only mid-morning. I was confused and instantly felt a wall of jet lag hit me like a heavy fog.

It was the sun that saved me—it finally came out in full force a few hours later, as I sat on a seven-hour bus from London to Newcastle. Soaking up its rays from the window, I felt better, and my body could finally tell that it was daytime. Needless to say, I was out like a light that night!

Besides all its bodily side effects, jet lag can also make one feel funny, weird or out-of-place. Combatting it from the onset of your journey can ensure you get the most out of your trip. Happy travelling! /TISG

In doing so, he took both hands off the handlebars of the bike to type his reply.

He put his phone back in his pocket, and when he looked up, he was already colliding towards a jogger, 60-year-old Poh Cho Hui.

Investigations showed that Adli was riding along the shared path toward Pasir Ris Drive 1 at around 23km/h, below the 25km/h speed limit.

However, his bike did not have a headlight even though it was already dark at night.

For his offences, Adli could have faced up to two years of jail time along with the necessary fine.

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge took time off for a week from royal duties to spend time with her brood – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis during the half term of fall.

She spent time with her two eldest kids Prince George, six, and Princess Charlotte, four,  who were on a school break.

Kate will be returning to public life with Kensington Palace announcing that the Duchess will be visiting East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices’ new centre The Nook on Friday 15 November.

There will be a reception for children and families as a plaque will be unveiled to officially open a new building in Framingham Earl, Norfolk.

Since 2012, Kate has been a patron of the charity, launching the £10million Nook Appeal five years ago to replace their old facility at Quidenham and raise funds for a new state-of-the-art children’s hospice.

A hydrotherapy pool, sensory room and en-suite family accommodation will be part of the new building.

Care and support is provided by the charity to children suffering from life-threatening conditions and their families from Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.

Express UK quoted HELLO magazine as saying:

“The Nook is a 21st century building to provide 21st century care, spread across a single floor, with more areas for clinical care, larger and better equipped en-suite bedrooms, dedicated therapy rooms and much more.

“It will allow us to fully cater for an increased demand for our service and the ever-changing and more complex needs of those we care for.

“Set on a five-acre woodland site, closer to the centre of the county, hospitals and road networks, it also means the majority of families and staff will travel shorter distances to receive and deliver care.”

Remembrance Day will be celebrated with Kate attending engagements with other members of the Royal Family ahead of opening of the new centre.

The royal couple is expected to attend the Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph, even though Kensington Palace have yet to announce the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s plans.

After Kate’s five-day tour with husband Prince William to Pakistan, she has not undertaken a royal visit since then.

Badshahi Mosque, the National Cricket Academy and the SOS Children’s Village that provides homes for children in need are the places the royal couple visited.

Kate and Prince William also spent the half term break at their country home in Amner Hall, Norfolk.

The Duchess was seen shopping for groceries with her children in a Sainsbury’s near the area.

Sister-in-law Meghan Markle is said to receive support from Kate recently after Meghan revealed her struggles with royal life.

A royal insider shared that Kate has been doing her best to bring everyone together.

Royal author Phil Dampier told Express.co.uk: “Behind the scenes, I’m told Kate is doing her best to bring everyone together and help Meghan.

“I’m told she has reached out to Meghan and spoken to her on the phone.

“Kate feels sorry for her and knows that Meghan is struggling.”

According to Dampier, the mother-of-three reminded Meghan that she is not the first member of the royal family to go through “a bad patch.”

Dampier said: “Catherine has told Meghan that every royal – including herself – goes through a bad patch with the press but the important thing is to learn by mistakes, move on and get through it.” /TISG

Domino’s Taiwan has taken things to the next step and offered a new boba dessert pizza. The next big food to fill everyone’s tummies and Instagram timelines features a soft, cheesy bread crust topped with even chewier black pearls, mochi balls, and drizzled with honey and brown sugar syrup.

Previous boba-infused food experiments have been met with confusion and even disgust such as the boba beer, boba ramen, boba mooncakes, and the notorious boba fries.

However, Taiwan’s boba-loving population seem to be fans of Domino’s Brown Sugar Boba Pizza with many admiring its ‘Q’ or “chewy” texture, a mark of well-cooked boba pearls.
The boba pizza will only be served for a limited time until the end of Nov 2019, so curious tourists and boba enthusiasts alike are rushing to get a taste.

Twitter user Lev Nachman tried out the boba pizza for himself and was surprised by how much he liked it.

“They nailed it. Not joking, everyone here needs to try this. The pizza is savory, but it’s sweetened with honey on top, the boba aren’t mushy, and the whole thing is 超級 Q af,” Nachman tweeted.

Domino’s Brown Sugar Boba Pizza is priced at NT$199 (S$8.8).

According to Vice, Pizza Hut Taiwan is also offering its version of the boba pizza called the QQ Brown Sugar Pearl Big Pizza and costs a much pricier NT$329 (S$14.7).

Other smaller business have offered the chewy pizza fusion in the past such as Taiwan’s Foodie Star, as reported by CNN, who claims to be the first to come up with the recipe back in April 2015. -/TISG

Heart attacks leading cause of death in Malaysia

0
YouTube video grab of explaner on heart disease

Heart attack remains the leading cause of death in Malaysia for the 14th year and it was the principal cause of death for males in Malaysia with 12,510 deaths (17.8%) while for females, the principal cause of death was pneumonia with 6,033 deaths (12.8%).

This was revealed in a report from the Department of Statistics Malaysia on the latest causes of death in the country.

The report says last year, 172,031 total deaths from various causes were recorded or an increase of 2.3% compared to 168,168 in 2017.

It says on average, 50 persons in Malaysia die of ischaemic heart diseases every day.

Statistics shows that 20.4 per cent of Malaysian within the 15 to 40 age group had died in transport accidents, which is a fall from 2017.
In that year, 22.5 per cent of those from the same group were killed in transport accidents but the top cause of death for those aged 14 and below was pneumonia, which counted for 4.8 per cent of the deaths.
DOSM said ischaemic heart diseases were the principal cause of death in 90 administrative districts in Malaysia and the highest percentage was recorded in Petaling, Selangor (16.3%).

Urban areas recorded 12,101 cases, double that in rural areas (6,166 cases), it said.

Meanwhile, pneumonia was the principal cause of death in 48 administrative districts with the highest percentage recorded in Kota Setar, Kedah (17.8%).

The number of deaths due to ischaemic heart diseases in Malaysia in 2010 was 9,371 and the figures increased gradually through the years. The jump increased more prominently from 2016 to 2017 (13.9%) and from 2017 to 2018 (15.6%).

According to deputy Health Minister Dr Lee Boon Chye, the increase in heart disease is attributed to non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, as well as obesity and unhealthy diets and lifestyles.

In January, Dr Lee said, “The increase in the ageing population also contributed to the increase in the number of heart patients. With a longer life expectancy, continuous treatment will be required.

“By 2040, it is estimated that the population of Malaysians aged 65 and above will exceed six million, which is 14.5% of the total population. This means the burden of coronary heart disease is expected to multiply in the near future,” he said at the opening of the Tung Shin Hospital Cardiac Care Service Centre yesterday. -/TISG

3 teens under investigation for posting fake chopper attack on social media and tagging the police

Singapore—The Singapore Police Force (SPF) issued a press release announcing that three men teenagers are under investigation for sending a false message via the social media app, Instagram.

The teens were between the ages of 17 and 19.

At 11:50 pm on October 28, the Police received an alert concerning an Instagram story that featured one male teen threatening another with a chopping knife.

The identities of the three teenagers behind the prank were determined by the officers from the Jurong Police Division, who had carried out follow up investigations on the matter. The young men were arrested on October 29.

The police investigations showed that the teens were just playing around, and “were not in any immediate or imminent danger.”

In their prank, the teens had even tagged the Singapore Police Force as a joke.

The police added that investigations are still ongoing.

The penalty for sending a fabricated or false message is a fine not greater than S$10,000, or a jail term not longer than three years, or both.

Some netizens were swift to condemn the teenagers for their foolhardy prank, calling their actions “stupid” and “irresponsible.”

Other netizens agreed, saying that teens from the ages of 17 to 19 are old enough to distinguish right from wrong.

Others believe that they should be given a second chance.

Some commenters said the police should not be made fun of.

Others wondered that the police actually check social media.

True to form, some believe that the fault lies in the teens’ upbringing.

This is the second time in a little over a month that teenage boys have run afoul of the law. On September 30, TISG reported concerning the arrest of 7 of 14 teenagers at Singapore Boys Home. The teens had been charged with rioting, according to the Ministry for Social and Family Development (MSF).

Fourteen residents from the juvenile detention centre run by MSF were arrested by 50 police officers outfitted with riot gear on September 27, after the police were called in when the group “behaved in an unruly manner.”

An auxiliary police officer and two male staff from the home were conveyed to the hospital the same night.

According to MSF head Desmond Lee, the boys – who are between the ages of 14 and 17 – used “sports equipment” to assault officers who arrived at the scene after the boys caused a “mass disturbance” at the open yard after sports activities.

Lee added that the identity of the seven who have been charged in court for rioting will not be released due to their age and that the remaining seven who were arrested will be returned to the Boys Home./ TISG

A Malaysian couple living in Norway who lost custody of their children following an investigation by authorities relating to an allegation of abuse involving their child have claimed trial.

The couple, Hairi Muhamad, 42, and Norliha Khamis, 42, got into trouble with the local authorities after one of their offspring complained to the authorities of having to fast for long hours.

The family have been living in Stord, Norway for the last 10 years where the father of the children works as a welder.

The couple have five children aged between four and 16 and have lost custody of them since May.

According to reports, one of the children told a teacher the long hours of fasting during the last Ramadan had caused stress while another child claimed to have been beaten.

The teacher then thought the child was being abused and launched a complaint with the authorities and the investigation led to the trial.

A brother of the children’s father, Hasrol said during this period, the children have been placed under the temporary care of three non-Muslim families in Norway.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is dealing with the matter and the Malaysian Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden is keeping a close watch on the development of the case.

In a statement to the media, the ministry known as Wisma Putra said, “The Malaysian Embassy has contacted the couple and rendered consular assistance in line with the Vienna Convention 1963.

“The embassy is also working with the relevant local agencies there to protect the rights and welfare of the family, including making sure their children will be placed with Muslim families,” the statement added.

Wisma Putra had also instructed Malaysian Embassy officials to attend and conduct a watching brief on the trial scheduled from Nov 4 to 6. -/TISG
