Performers in tutus under lion dance costumes: Troupe withdraws from Chingay 2021

Singapore — A troupe with performers wearing tutus under their lion dance costumes has withdrawn from Chingay 2021.

The pullout follows criticism online that the changed attire marred a cultural image.

On Dec 11, the Chinese newspaper Lianhe Wanbao had shared a video of preparations for the dance segment in Chingay 2021.

The show was to feature 100 lions in a four-minute lion dance performance. Five of the lions were to feature 10 dancers from the Dance Spectrum International (DSI) troupe. The  10 dancers, aged between 14 and 30, were supposed to tap dance in tutus under lion costumes. The rest of the performers were to be in the traditional costumes.

The video led to a petition on change.org directed at the People’s Association (PA) and calling it to “Drop the Lion Dance with Tutu Performance for Chingay!”

The petitioner, Lion Dance Singapore, said: “What travesty is this, the very act of wearing tutus under the lion dance costume which is considered a second skin to us who are members of Singapore’s finest lion dance troupes!”

“I believe that the Chingay parades we have is to showcase our diverse cultural identities instead of destroying a cultural image in the name of creativity. There is a fine line between pushing the boundaries of the art form, and preserving its artistic integrity and traditions.”

As at Tuesday (Dec 29), the petition had 1,219 signatories.

The People’s Association said on Monday (Dec 28) in a joint statement with Dance Spectrum International and the Singapore Wushu Dragon & Lion Dance Federation that the segment was scrapped “in consideration of the young dancers affected by cyberbullying”.

They said: “While we welcome different views on artistic expression, we do not condone online hurtful remarks and personal attacks on individuals posted on social media. It is not consistent with the gracious and inclusive society that we wish to see.”

Lawyer M Ravi to represent Singaporean sentenced to death in Vietnam

Singapore — Lawyer M Ravi announced on his Facebook page on Monday (Dec 28) that he had been instructed to represent a Singaporean convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to death in Vietnam.

According to Mr Ravi, the family of Cher Wei Hon contacted him “after Aslinda’s case came to the public attention”.

The lawyer is also representing Siti Aslinda binte Junaidi. She is also a Singaporean and is facing the death penalty in China after also being convicted of drug trafficking.

Mr Ravi added that he is representing Cher pro bono, as the latter has three young children who are being taken care of by his ailing mother.

“It is very sad that he does not have any lawyers currently on board giving him proper advice on his appeal according to his family. They were not sure even if he had a lawyer during his trial,” he said in his Facebook post.

He added that he hoped to “get to the bottom” of Cher’s case and that he had reached out to a human rights lawyer in Vietnam.

“Vietnam conducts their death penalty through lethal injections …

“Another case that reveals that death penalty targets the poor. Before one can judge Cher’s innocence it is important that he has proper legal representation and a fair process that metes out the punishment.”

Cher was sentenced to death by the Tay Ninh People’s Court on Aug 7 this year. He had been convicted of smuggling 10 kg of methamphetamines from Cambodia.

The 40-year-old Singaporean was living in Ho Chi Minh City at the time of his arrest.

Cher’s indictment said that in the early morning hours of June 29, 2019, he was in a vehicle driven by Mr Duong Hung Tam, 27, a Vietnamese.

The Southern Drug Prevention Special Force, in cooperation with the Border Guard Station at Moc Bai Tay Ninh province bordering Ho Chi Minh City, stopped and searched the vehicle.

The police say that 9.95 kg of meth were found in the car. The Singaporean was on the way to Ho Chi Minh City to deliver the drugs, according to Vietnamese news site VN Express.

Cher said he had borrowed VND200 million (S$11,400) from a woman named Ms Quynh in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and worked for her to pay off the debt.

Ms Quynh initially had him bring iPhones and iPads from Cambodia to Vietnam, but later had him running drugs between the two countries for S$665 to S$1,300 per trip. He went back and forth five times before getting caught.

At the time of Cher’s arrest, no connection was found between him and Mr Tam, and so the latter was released. Ms Quynh is still at large.

In Vietnam, anyone convicted of possession or smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kg of meth are sentenced to death. Those found guilty of producing or selling 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal narcotics are also sentenced to death. /TISG

Twelve Cupcakes founders Daniel Ong and Jaime Teo charged with underpaying foreign employees

0

Singapore — The founders of the Twelve Cupcakes bakery chain — Daniel Ong, 45, and his former wife Jaime Teo, 43, — were on Tuesday (Dec 29) charged with underpaying eight of their foreign employees from 2012 to 2016.

Each faced 24 counts of contravening rules under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act, including charges of failing to pay their foreign employees on time, according to a  report on channelnewsasia.com.

Former radio deejay Ong is accused of allowing the company to underpay or fail to pay within a fixed time the salaries of eight foreign employees with the bakery between September 2012 and December 2016.

The eight employees had salaries of between S$2,000 and S$2,600 a month and were underpaid.

Ong is also accused of allowing Twelve Cupcakes to fail to pay an employee his monthly salary of S$2,000 within a stipulated time-frame on three occasions.

Teo, an actress, faced similar charges.

Ong and Teo, who divorced in 2016 after nine years of marriage, set up Twelve Cupcakes in 2011. They sold it in 2017 to Indian tea company Dhunseri Group for S$2.5 million.

Dhunseri Group’s lawyer earlier told the court that the group underpaid its foreign employees because it was continuing a practice put in place by the founders. The group had, in some instances, paid its employees the correct amounts to their bank accounts but asked them to return some of their pay.

Both Ong and Teo will return to court on Jan 26, after he was granted an adjournment of four weeks.

For each charge of contravening foreign work pass rules, they could be jailed for up to a year, fined up to S$10,000, or both. /TISG

Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon and VIXX’s Ravi rumoured to be dating

0

Korean media outlet Soompi has reported that Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon and VIXX’s Ravi are dating. News outlet Joy News 24 was the first to report that the duo have been going out for a year. Joy News 24 said that a source close to the pair opened up and explained that Taeyeon and Ravi got to know each other through a mutual friend about a year ago. It was also reported that Ravi and Taeyeon were seen entering Ravi’s house together on Christmas day.

Taeyeon’s agency SM Entertainment said to news outlet Sports Kyunghyang, “They are only close colleagues who work on music together.” As news started reporting about the couple, Ravi’s label GROOVL1N also decided to make a statement and put the rumours to rest. Based on news outlet AllKpop, they have confirmed that Ravi and Taeyeon are dating.

The label said, “It’s true that they’re dating. Please do not make any guesses so they can have a good relationship.” SM Entertainment’s refusal to the claims and this new statement from Ravi’s label has added to the confusion. The moment the news of both K-pop idols dating hit the Internet, netizens rushed to Twitter to share what they think.

One user stated, “I’m just mind my business this has nothing to do with us it’s between Ravi and Taeyeon and if they are dating congratulations to them!!!” Another expressed, “What kind of person is Ravi? Does he have a good personality? (pls no bad intentions meant, I just have little to no information of him so I just wanna know). And if both parties confirm this then congrats to both of them! I hope Taeyeon will be happy with him.”

WP’s Yee Jenn Jong’s book reprinted after just one week as bookstores replenish stock

Singapore—Former Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Yee Jenn Jong’s book, Journey in Blue: A Peek into the Workers’ Party of Singapore, was reprinted just one week after publication, with bookstores already ordering new stock.

Mr Yee, who has said that he hopes that his book will give rise to more political discussions among Singaporeans, took to Facebook on Tuesday morning (Dec 29) to say that a fresh supply of his personal stock had arrived, posting a photo of the books that were still in their packaging.

He wrote that he had run out of copies of his book, which was released earlier this month, over the Christmas break and could only ask for additional copies on Monday, Dec 28, when work resumed.

“They informed me that they had to re-print as the bookshops have started to order more, just one week into the book being on the shelves. Really encouraged by the strong support to my new journey as a writer,” Mr Yee added.

But he also had good news for those who are interested in getting an autographed copy, posting a link for these.

Otherwise Journey in Blue, which is published by World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd, is still available at bookstores such as Kinokuniya, Times, Popular, and  Epigram

Mr Yee’s book is a look at the Workers’ Party, of which he has been a member since 2011, as well as opposition politics in general, through an insider’s eyes. Mr Yee used to be part of the WP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) but was not among the names in the CEC announced after the party’s election on Sunday.

Nor is Mr Yee, who contested in three General Elections (2011, 2015, 2020) planning on running for a seat in Parliament in the future.

He wrote in a Facebook post on Dec 23, “Am I retiring from politics? I will still be with WP but I do not plan to contest any more GEs. Many younger and qualified people have come forward and I do not see the need for me to be actively contesting. What you read is correct – GE2020 would be my final contest.”

He did, however, talk about the three elections he contested in his book, as well as his experiences as an NCMP, and the work he has done as an opposition politician.

Mr Yee also shed some light on the process of telling his story, and what he wants to accomplish:

“I spoke first with several people -ex-political desk reporters, political analysts, and even those critical of WP. Why? I wanted this book to be not just for opposition supporters but for anyone interested to know what it is like to be an opposition parliamentarian and candidate.

The book is not a tell-all book but it is my attempt to promote better political education because I felt people who wish to write about us or criticise us can first better understand what it really is like in the WP of today which I was privileged to have played some role in the years that we transformed to be the leading opposition party.

And because I do not intend to contest in future GEs, it has become easier for me to offer my frank views.” —/TISG

18-year-old boy falls through walkway shelter at Tampines

Singapore—An eighteen-year-old boy fell from the sixth floor of a residential building along Tampines Street on Sunday morning (Dec 27), according to a report from Shin Min Daily News.

The roof of a walkway shelter broke his fall.

The incident occurred at Block 162 on 12th Street in Tampines at around half-past 10 in the morning.

An argument was heard by residents in the area for a few minutes, and then the young man fell down from the sixth floor and through the walkway shelter.

The police and an ambulance quickly arrived on the scene after the mishap, having received an alert at 10.44am.

A report in AsiaOne says that witnesses saw that the young man could still nod when paramedics attended to him, although Shin Min Daily News reported that the scene was bloody. He was conscious when he was brought to Changi General Hospital.

It is suspected that the young man and his girlfriend had an argument, and that he was unwilling to break up with her. It is believed that the young man jumped deliberately after hearing that his girlfriend wanted to end their relationship.

Neighbours said that the teenager’s fall made a large hole in the roof of the walkway that extended from the HDB.

Shin Min Daily News also reported that the young man was not in favour of the breakup his girlfriend proposed. The couple were seen arguing in the stairwell at the sixth floor of the building in Tampines, said the friend of the young man who accompanied him to talk to her.

The friend said, “They talked alone in the stairwell on the 6th floor, and then this tragedy happened.”

Witnesses shared videos and photos of a flustered-looking woman in blue shorts checking on the boy after his fall, just before the medical personnel arrived.

A resident told Shin Min Daily News that he had heard a loud noise on Sunday morning, followed by a commotion, with people shouting that someone had fallen from the building. He then called the police.

The boy’s case is currently under investigation. —/TISG

Spotted: Woman sitting cross-legged in the middle of road with busy traffic

Singapore – A woman was caught on dash camera footage sitting cross-legged in the middle of the road with vehicles passing by.

On Monday (Dec 28), Facebook page ROADS.sg uploaded a video of the incident involving a woman situated in the middle of a three-lane road at night with busy traffic around her.

The video shows passing vehicles slowing down or changing lanes as they caught sight of a woman dressed in black sitting with her legs crossed on the lane markings. The incident is said to have happened on Sunday night (Dec 27).

A man can also be seen standing by the roadside and appeared to be looking at or talking to her, the caption noted.

With over 350 comments to date, members from the online community wondered what possible drama or relationship problem could have led the woman to conduct such behaviour.

Although the woman was not positioned on the middle of the lane, which would cause obstruction to traffic, many noted that her actions still endangered herself and the motorists around her. Netizens highlighted that bikers always use these lane markings, thus increasing the risk of an accident.

“Why in the middle of the road,” questioned Facebook user Sitra Chelliah. “Go to a park or garden where nature beings are and pour out your stress to mother nature. It’s much better no one gets into trouble because of you. An accident, injury, death, or disability will never help,” added the netizen.

Group of ang mohs flouts safe distancing rules at Lazarus island yacht party

A group of men and women was seen flouting safe-distancing measures while on a yacht at Lazarus Island on Saturday (Dec 26).

In a Facebook post by one Bu Hui Yan, photos and videos of the group partying on their yacht were uploaded to social media. The photos and videos were then circulated on WhatsApp messenger as well.

Lazarus Island, also known as Pulau Sakijang Pelepah, is one of the Southern Islands in Singapore. The men and women presumably rented a yacht for Boxing Day as they could be heard dancing to Christmas tunes.

According to the Ministry of Health’s guidelines, (MOH) updated on Monday (Dec 28), “Social gatherings of up to any eight persons can take place, in premises that are open to the public. The eight persons do not need to be from the same household. If gathering at home, households may receive up to eight visitors at any one time. These eight visitors are not restricted to having to come from the same household either”.

The group on the yacht comprised of more than five persons, with none of them wearing masks. There also seemed to be no social distancing between those on board.

During Phase 2 of Singapore’s Circuit Breaker – which ended a day after the yacht party on December 27 – there was a prohibition on social gatherings of more than five persons under the Covid-19 regulations.

Singapore’s circuit breaker began on April 7 and lasted until June 1. Phase one started on June 2, when some businesses were allowed to reopen with safety measures in place and graduating cohorts of students started to return to school. However, social gatherings of up to five per group were only permitted from phase two, which kicked in on June 19.

Earlier in June, six people were caught flouting Covid-19 safety measures at Robertson Quay. Their work passes were revoked and they are permanently banned from working in Singapore. /TISG
