Members of the public had mixed opinions on Minister for Law and Home Affairs K Shanmugam’s statement that mattresses in Singapore prisons are not ideal due to hygiene and security issues.

Many said that imprisonment was not a holiday vacation; hence inmates are not supposed to have luxurious treatment. At the same time, others expressed concern that not showing humanity towards prisoners could mean they don’t act better upon release.

‘My boyfriend is clearly not over his ex – what should I do?’ — Girlfriend seeks advice

Nobody wants to be anyone else’s sloppy seconds, right? And when a woman who claimed that her boyfriend is still hung up on his ex-girlfriend sought advice online, many commenters told her it was time to say goodbye, while others said she needs to trust her partner.

“I have been together with my bf for almost 2 years now and I don’t know if he truly loves me or just being together with me because I’m submissive and always puts him first,” a woman wrote in an NUS Whispers post that was published on Thursday (July 7).

She said that when they were just beginning to date, she saw a “family photo with his first love in it on his computer table,” but said nothing about it at first.

But one day, when her boyfriend “suddenly compared me to his first ex infront his friends when we were drinking,” she mentioned that the photo of his ex made her uncomfortable, and he took it away.

However, he still keeps tabs on his ex via social media and the two exchange greetings on holidays.

“He follows her and her sis on Instagram and likes almost every photo of hers. I told him I was uncomfortable with it but he carried on with it.

Fast forward to last year, I realized that the both of them still wish each other happy new year and birthday.”

When she confronted him, they nearly broke up “because I asked him to unfollow and not reply (to) his ex.”

She said that her boyfriend told her, “I cannot don’t reply someone when I’m in good terms with them but I can don’t text her happy birthday”.

They then reached a compromise: he would not unfollow her but would no longer like her pictures, and if she texted him, he would let his girlfriend know.

However, the boyfriend appeared to have found a workaround, as the woman wrote that she “still found him liking her sister’s photos with his ex in it.”

“What should I do?” she asked.

Many netizens told her to end the relationship, with one commenter calling it “toxic.”

“How can you expect a man to value you when you do not even value yourself?” asked another.

A number of netizens encouraged her to love herself.

“It seems like he chose himself over you,” one netizen observed.

“Why would you need a man if this man makes you feel insecure and unloved, as opposed to being secure and loved while not in a relationship?” asked another.

Others said, however, that they think the woman is being unnecessarily paranoid over the ex-girlfriend.

“Learn to trust your partner, a little at a time and then see where it goes. It is not easy, I know, but then again nothing is ever really easy,” one wrote.

An accident at the Causeway Checkpoint on Thursday morning (July 7) saw a 12-vehicle pile-up.

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the accident occurred beyond the international boundary leading to Woodlands Checkpoint, which means it happened on Malaysia’s side.

Videos taken at the scene show a large truck slowly ramming into several cars before stopping.

The accident had blocked two of the three lanes on the highway, and travellers had been told in an earlier advisory to expect delays.

ICA said by noon, however, that all lanes had been cleared, although it advised travellers to check the LTA’s One Motoring website for updates before going in that direction.

The side of one vehicle was completely crushed.

Clips show at least eight affected vehicles in the pile-up, including a sports utility vehicle, a multipurpose vehicle, a van, a public bus, and four cars.

Some videos show a white van being towed away from the scene, while others show debris on the highway in the aftermath of the mishap. The damaged vehicles can also be seen being moved to the side of the road.

The accident occurred at around 9 o’clock on Thursday morning.

Yet another fight on the street was caught on camera and posted online, sparking criticisms from the online community. The footage was posted on SG Kaypoh 人!Facebook page on Wednesday (Jul 6) and has since gone viral with over 82,000 views.

The video starts with a young woman on the side of the road and a driver inside a white Toyota Vellfire already arguing. The woman flashed her middle finger angrily at the man. The driver then stops the vehicle in the middle of the road and steps out to confront the woman.

She gave the driver her middle finger before kicking the side of the vehicle.

According to a Straits Times report, the police were aware of the incident along Beach Road on July 6 and are currently investigating.

Members of the online community were on the fence as to what happened between the two parties.

Some said the woman deserved to be slapped based on her behaviour, while others noted the man shouldn’t have hurt her.

Still, Facebook user Nadhirah Natasha pointed out that respect goes both ways. “Some people just need to learn their lesson the hard way. Respect goes both ways. Frankly speaking, the woman deserved that big strong slap on her face. Perhaps she will be able to treat people more decently after this.” /TISG

Cyclists riding middle of the road without care, netizens say they should be banned

Separate incidents of cyclists riding in the middle of the road without due care have sparked comments from netizens that they are incompatible on the road and should be banned.

The first incident involved a cyclist entering Stamford Road and swerving at least two lanes before an oncoming vehicle had to blow the horn to warn the cyclist.

Photo: FB screengrab/ROADS.sg

It was only after the cam car had honked at the cyclist that he became more aware, slowing down and looking behind him for other vehicles before crossing to the left-most lane.

“If can add a thought bubble animation on his head it would say, ‘Gahmen say I can on the road, I bicycle so no need to follow the rules like the rest of you, anything happens to me you in trouble, good right?'” commented Facebook user Plai Swoi on the ROADS.sg Facebook page post.

“Cyclists are incompatible on the roads. They should be banned,” added netizen Loh Zheng Yi.

In another post on July 3, Facebook page SG Road Vigilante – SGRV highlighted a cyclist riding in the middle of Dunearn Road and even signalled at the incoming cam car to transfer to another lane.

Photo: FB screengrab/SG Road Vigilante – SGRV

The camcar driver refused to transfer and instead forced the cyclist to the left-most lane before shouting, “Why the f**k are you cycling in the middle of the road?”

The original poster wrote, “Cycling in the middle lane on a rental bike without any lights and with earpods plugged into his ears. What the heck is going through his head and makes him think it is perfectly safe to be doing this.”

“This kind of cyclist needs to be taught a lesson. Otherwise, they have this kind of selfish and self-entitlement mindset. What if someone drove and didn’t manage to keep a look out of him and ended up banging into him? Yes, both need to be considerate, but this cyclist needs to learn his lesson!” said Facebook user Angus Gaijin about the video.

According to the Rules and Code of Conduct of the Active Mobility Act stated on the Land Transport Authority website, cyclists must obey all traffic signals and wear a helmet when on the road.

Other on-road guidelines are mentioned below:

A non-title match between self-declared WCW heavyweight champion Kurt Tay and his alleged hater was streamed live online, resulting in Tay’s unanimous loss and police appearance at the end.

The incident happened at Yishun MRT station, where Tay first met his opponent whom he called his hater.

“Okay, so he want to talk big, you know, say I got no balls to meet him,” said Kurt Tay in a live stream addressing his audience.

“Then he say, ‘Oh, he can finish me in three minutes’ time,'” said Tay. “So this hater has been talking s**t about me for the past few months. Okay, so I’m coming here right now.”

The video titled “WCW World🌎🌍Heavyweight Champion “The Icon “Kurtberg Fighting Hater Street Fight Live Video 5 July 2022” was uploaded on YouTube and eventually taken down. However, it was reshared on other social media accounts, including on a Hardwarezone forum.

Kurt Tay initially met with his opponent dressed in green and accompanied by another man. They suggested settling the score at the void deck.

“You want to go void deck? Go void deck for what?” asked Tay, although they eventually exited the station.

Tay’s opponent then handed him a document to read. It appears to be an indemnity form, releasing the opponent from any responsibility should Tay incur any injuries from the fight.

Before the fight started, Tay’s opponent removed his shoes while he positioned his camera to capture the event.

They shook hands, and the match “officially” began at the 7:30 mark of the video.

Tay was punched in the face, kicked in the stomach and thrown to the ground.

After regaining his stance, he tried diving for his opponent, but the man effortlessly pushed him back to the ground.

Photo: FB screengrab/Suara Kita SG

Based on the opponent’s footwork and fighting stance, he seems to know some form of martial arts.

After asking for a water break to catch his breath, a break to readjust his position for the camera and a few more punches and kicks, Tay admits defeat.

Photo: FB screengrab/Suara Kita SG

They shook hands, and Tay announced he had lost to his opponent.

Two police officers were also spotted at the scene, although it remains unclear if they were alerted to the incident.

Tay also commented on the Hardwarezone forum, noting the fight was “unfair.”

“I more than 5 years never do sparring already. D last time I do sparring is 5 years ago at MMA school while this Guy has been training regularly is not a fair fight. I should have few months training before d actual fight (sic).”

According to another post on Hardwarezone on July 6, Tay and his opponent were called to assist with police investigations after the fight. /TISG

Reticulated python curled up in netizen’s chicken coop after breaking through fence

A reticulated python was caught on camera after it broke through a small opening in the fence of a netizen.

In a post to Facebook group Singapore Wildlife Sightings, a netizen who went by the name of Aaron Tyw shared that the python had broken through a small opening in the fence and had found its way to his chicken coop.

In the video, the python could be seen lying on the coop, curled up with its body full. As the camera panned in the 21-second clip, the python could be seen snoozing, followed by the carcass of a chicken on the ground below.

Reticulated pythons are among the most commonly sighted snakes in Singapore. They are found in almost all habitats from forests to mangroves and also in urban areas.

According to wildsingapore.com, these snakes grow to about 10m long, but those we might see are usually much shorter and rarely exceed 5m. Among the longest snakes in the world, this powerfully muscled snake is non-venomous and kills by constricting its victims in its coils. Large adult ones can be dangerous to humans. Even though it is non-venomous, it can give a nasty lacerating bite with its powerful jaws filled with sharp long fangs. Don’t disturb a python. It has a pretty net-like pattern (‘reticulatus’ means ‘net-like’) and scales that are iridescent in the sunlight.

The reticulated python hunts small warm-blooded animals and is said to eat nearly anything it can catch, from mice, and rats to deer and pigs. A good climber, even tree dwellers are not safe from it. It is also an excellent swimmer. It is considered a pest on poultry farms. And it is mainly nocturnal.

Others who commented on the post urged Mr Aaron to contact the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES).

In the comments, Mr Aaron updated that the python had indeed been caught and sent to ACRES. When weighed, it came up to about 8kg, and under 3m long, he said.

Man shouts vulgarities and punches security guard because he was told to put on mask

A video of a man shouting at and hitting a security guard went viral on Tuesday (Jul 5).

In an incident that took place at Tampines Retail Park on Monday (Jul 4) night, the security guard on duty told a man not wearing a mask to put one on or purchase one from the pharmacy at the entrance of the building.

In a media statement, the Security Association Singapore said that security officer Sures Perimal was on duty at the main entrance of Giant Hypermart at the Tampines Retail Park at around 10.20 pm on Monday. His duties included ensuring that people entering the building wore their masks as per the relevant safe management measures, it added.

Mr Sures saw the man approaching the building without a mask and advised him accordingly.

However, the man was “unhappy” that the security officer had called him out for not wearing a mask, and shouted some vulgarities at Mr Sures before entering the building, said the Security Association Singapore (SAS).

“After a short while, the said person suddenly rushed out of the building and without warning, pushed SO Sures, while shouting vulgarities at him. He then started shoving and punching SO Sures,” said the association.

“A member of the Giant Hypermart staff and members of the public intervened to stop his assault on SO Sures. SO Sures suffered from bruises and contusions arising from the attack”, the association said.

In addition, SAS President Raj Joshua Thomas said: “This is yet another sickening incident of abuse against a security officer who was merely carrying out his duties. New penalties for abuse against security officers came into effect this year. The police attended to the matter at the scene, and we will leave it to the authorities to investigate and take the appropriate action.

While shocking, I am also heartened that a Giant staff member and members of the public stepped in to defend the officer. SAS thanks them for their civic-mindedness and responsibility.

In response to media queries, the police said they have apprehended a 57-year-old man under the Mental Health Act. Police investigations are ongoing. /TISG

‘Serial high-rise litterbug’ — Poop bags allegedly thrown to the ground in Fernvale

A ‘serial high-rise litterbug’ has become TikTok famous, but perhaps not famous enough for action to be taken yet.

Therefore, residents at Block 471C Fernvale Street are banding together to file a case through the National Environment Agency’s OneService app when the pooper strikes again.

On the TikTok account of TracedTogether, there’s a montage posted on July 5 of plastic bags on the ground, allegedly containing feces, from different dates from May 5 to July 1.

It also contains a screenshot of complaints files via the OneService app.

Nothing about the complaint was reportedly done, save for sending cleaners to remove the poop, according to @TracedTogether.

The video has been viewed over 93,500 times.

On July 6, a follow-up video was posted.

It was captioned, “This morning, the litterbug threw down two bags – containing ur1ne and faece5. Based on last video, yall might have thot that it was a sporadic behaviour but nope! It’s a thrice-a-day act. Really hope @nea_sg could take action. Thank you!”

A contributor to the crowdsourced news site Stomp named Adriel said that this happens daily and has been going on for months.

Adriel told Stomp that reports have been lodged with the Ang Mo Kio Town Council, the NEA, and the police.

But it appears that “more” is needed in order for the case to be lodged.

“NEA replied last month. They stated that only two members of the public reported the case through OneService app.

They need more in order to lodge the case.

So when the next case happens, the residents will gather together and log another case through the OneService app.

I have spoken to the town council and they too brought this matter up to NEA.

NEA replied the same thing to the town council. Lack of complaints through OneService app,” STOMP quotes Adriel as saying.

He added that he brought the story to STOMP in the hopes that “through the media, we can put a stop to this inconsiderate action.”

STOMP reached out to the Ang Mo Kio Town Council, which confirmed incidents reported of high-rise littering on May 20 and June 26.

“We had referred both incidents to NEA for their assistance. At the same time, we have been liaising closely with NEA and had put up notices to remind residents of the risks that high-rise littering posed to public health and safety,” the Town Council added. /TISG

Netizen warns: ‘Don’t ever stay with parents-in-law because they’re very stubborn, unreceptive of change or suggestions’

A netizen who had a bad experience after staying with their in-laws took to social media to warn others not to do the same.

In a post to popular confessions page SGWhispers, the netizen wrote: “Don’t ever stay with parents in law. Their way of thinking is too different from ours and they’re very stubborn, unreceptive of change or suggestions”.

They added that when they left their child with their in-laws, they gave the baby food that adults eat, that was loaded with sugars and salt “without my knowledge”.

The netizen continued, “When we came back, they even “bragged”about it. And in subsequent meals, they keep saying that it is ok, they have fed before & nothing went wrong”.

“Beware guys”, the netizen warned, “Don’t stay with parents in law. No Matter how nice they are before marriage”.

Netizens who commented on the post seemed to be divided. Here’s what they said:

In May, another netizen suffered the same fate. A woman whose mother-in-law knew not the meaning of boundaries took to social media after she had enough.

In an anonymous post on popular confessions page SGWhispers on Sunday (May 15), the woman wrote that she felt “so fed up with a marriage where my MIL does not respect boundaries”. She qualified her post by saying that her mother-in-law (MIL) was “nice” but went on to add that her MIL would feed her 8-month-old child fast food.

Referring to her child as ‘LO’, the daughter-in-law wrote: “Milk, she insists on using formula because “convenient”, but LO is used to & prefers to look for me for feeds. She fed my LO water before 6mths old. Even though we told her not to. She fed my 2yo nephew coffee saying that there’s no cream or sugar. Just pure coffee. I don’t understand. Do kids drink coffee nowadays?”

Help, my mother-in-law feeds my 8mth old baby fast food, gives away my clothes and does not respect boundaries, husband sides his mum too
