Faisal Manap resumes MP duties after recovery from cardiac condition

0

SINGAPORE: After being hospitalised in late July for a cardiac condition, Workers’ Party MP Muhamad Faisal bin Abdul Manap (Aljunied GRC) is now in better health and has returned to serving residents at Kaki Bukit ward.

Mr Faisal, 48, who has represented the division since 2011, was back in a meet-the-people session on Wednesday (Sept 6), the Workers’ Party said in a Facebook post on Thursday morning.

“After six weeks of hospitalisation leave, and two angioplasty procedures, Faisal is revitalised and is prepared to resume his duties,” the post read.

“Faisal is grateful to fellow WP MPs and former MPs Mr Low Thia Khiang, Mr Png Eng Huat and Ms Lee Li Lian for covering his duties. He is especially grateful to the volunteers, who have made sure residents’ needs continued to be met.

Faisal also expressed his thanks for everyone who has expressed well-wishes, concerns as well as prayers during his recovery,” the WP added.

On Jul 25, the party said that Mr Faisal, who is the WP’s vice-chairman, was in an intensive care unit (ICU) due to a cardiac condition. The WP added that he was conscious and in a stable condition while being monitored and that other party members would cover for him while he was in recovery.

Two days later, WP secretary-general and fellow Aljunied GRC MP Pritam Singh said that Mr Faisal was doing much better, and thanked supporters for their care and concern.

By July 28, WP volunteer Mr Hiskandar Zulkarnaen Hasshim, told The Straits Times that Mr Faisal said that he was ready to leave the ICU.

Fortunately, Mr Faisal was well enough to be part of the WP’s National Day greetings over TikTok on Aug 9, although he was, understandably, absent from in-person events as he continued to recuperate.

Netizen asks, ‘How to deal with offending colleague?’

0

SINGAPORE: How do people deal with offending colleagues? A Reddit user shared his experience in a post and asked netizens what to do.

u/Delulu-Solu stated in r/askSingapore: “I have this “proclaimed” Gen Z female colleague that is like 5 years younger than me and would go on day after day throwing insults and mean comments around our conversations.”

Usually on days I don’t really let it bother me as I would just take it at surface value and throw back similar level comments back at her. But some days when I don’t have the mental fortitude to handle it, it ends up affecting my mood for the entire day even after the work hours,” the user added.

He admitted that what was happening was unhealthy, but he does not know how to tell his colleague to ‘back off’ or ‘tone it down.’

“It baffles me that there isn’t a decent sense of kindness or respect to a fellow person and to not cross over a certain line?.. Has anyone encounter this kind of situation before?” he asked.

The post got a lot of comments from fellow Reddit users.

One user stated: “I think you should stop throwing back similar level comments to her. Otherwise she may mistake it as banter. Be the person that you want to be. Be the mature one. Being silent when she talks nonsense is a form of response as well.”

Another user remarked: “It could just be her way of interacting with other people around her but that is just an assumption. It’s hard to draw any conclusion without an example. Regardless, my guess is she probably doesn’t know that she was being offensive. I think you can point it out to her casually.”

More comments mentioned: “Just let her know you need alone time..”

Video of car driver urinating outside landed property goes viral

0

SINGAPORE: A viral video in which a man was seen publicly urinating outside a landed property in Singapore, has prompted outrage and widespread condemnation online. The video was originally posted on Facebook by the SG Road Vigilante page on Tuesday (5 Sept).

The footage depicts a man exiting a white car and popping the trunk of his vehicle, presumably to obstruct the view of pedestrians. He proceeds to relieve himself in broad daylight, before closing the trunk, getting into his car and driving off – as though nothing happened.

According to the SG Road Vigilante page, the incident unfolded at approximately 5:56 pm on Monday (4 Sept). The administrators of the page questioned why the individual chose to park his car outside someone else’s residence and then engaged in such behaviour.

Urinating in public places is a punishable offence in Singapore. First-time offenders can face a fine of up to $1,000. Subsequent offences carry even more substantial penalties, with second-time offenders liable to pay fines of up to $2,000, and third-time offenders facing fines of up to $5,000.

The incident has triggered concerns about the blatant disregard for societal norms and laws. Singaporeans online have slammed such behaviour, urging authorities to take action against the individual involved.

Maid says her employer is very impatient and rude, told her to go to the shop and said, “Go buy now. Still wait for what”

SINGAPORE: A maid took to social media to share an exchange with her employer when, she said, the latter was rude and impatient.

In a post to a support group for domestic helpers and employers alike, the maid asked others what to do if their employers had anger issues and were impatient. She then went on to share her exchange with her employer. The helper wrote that her employer paid her salary and gave her extra money to take her daughter to the playground and buy snacks for her child.

However, because the maid used the additional money for the child the day before, she ended up using some of her own money. “So the money she gave me not enough for playground and I need to use mine. I wouldn’t mind if she ask properly but the way she msg me like it makes u pissed. She is really impatient both her and her daughter”, the maid wrote.

Along with her post, the helper shared a screenshot of the exchange that took place between them. The employer wrote in her message: “I transfer your salary and extra $10. You bring her down machine buy orange juice for her and buy donut you and her eat. Afternoon after nap go big playground”. When the helper thanked her employer, the woman then replied: “Go buy now. Still wait for what”.

Other helpers in the comments section urged the maid to speak to her employer nicely and explain the situation, but the maid felt that it was pointless.

Here’s what they said:

Earlier this year, a foreign domestic helper took to social media asking others if she had the right to demand a higher salary.

In a post to a support group for domestic helpers and employers alike, the maid wrote that she wanted a S$100 increase in her salary and to be allowed to take the day off on public holidays. She added that she had been working for the family for almost six years, with a salary of $750. The maid also wrote that she had to take care of three children, aged 7, 5, and 3.

“Do u think i have the right to demand for another $100 increase and PH off in case they still want to renew my contract?” she asked.

4-room resale flat in Telok Blangah sells for more than a million dollars

0

SINGAPORE: A four-room Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat in Telok Blangah has been resold for an eye-watering $1.1 million, marking the first-ever million-dollar HDB flat sale in the area. The record-breaking sale has sparked considerable interest among Singaporeans concerned about rising property prices in the city-state.

According to real estate firm EdgeProp, the ten-year-old unit, which was sold last month, offered a total floor area of 1,002 square feet and commanded a price per square foot of approximately S$1,076. It is located at Block 80A Telok Blangah Street 31.

One of the standout features of this HDB unit was its master bedroom, which is reported to be twice the size of typical HDB units, effectively equivalent to the size of two standard bedrooms. Such a generous layout undoubtedly contributed to the premium price tag attached to this property.

Situated above the 25th floor, the HDB flat offers panoramic and unobstructed views of the picturesque Keppel Bay and its scenic surroundings. Furthermore, the unit is conveniently located within a six-minute walk from both Telok Blangah and Labrador Park MRT stations, enhancing its accessibility and desirability.

Residents of this HDB flat will find themselves within easy reach of essential amenities. A covered walkway leads directly to a multi-storey car park, simplifying parking for residents. Additionally, the surrounding area boasts a wealth of amenities such as supermarkets, coffee shops, clinics, and more, ensuring residents have everything they need at their fingertips.

The historic million-dollar HDB sale in Telok Blangah has sparked discussions about the evolving real estate landscape in Singapore. With increasing demand for quality homes in prime locations, such transactions serve as a testament to the attractiveness of certain HDB units but also raise questions about affordability and access to housing for ordinary Singaporeans.

Despite the astonishing price tag of the ten-year-old Telok Blangah flat, a four-room HDB resale flat in Tiong Bahru sold for $1.5 million in June still holds the record for the highest-priced HDB resale flat.

This flat is located on the fourth floor of Blk 50 Moh Guan Terrace, built in 1973 and has already completed 50 years out of its 99-year lease. The flat now has 48 years and eight months left on its lease, according to HDB’s resale price portal.

The sale of the 50-year-old flat in Tiong Bahru has caused a stir among property buyers and real estate experts alike, as properties with shorter remaining leases typically have lower demand and prices. This is especially true given the limited financing options available for older flats.

Woman says that one of her best friends admitted to being a serial thief, says she has stolen over S$50K in items

SINGAPORE: A woman took to social media saying that one of her best friends admitted to being a serial thief and asked what she should do.

“I’ve known her for just over a year – the kind of girl who is attractive, draws stares from guys and very fashionable. On top of that, she is a very good friend – the kind who will stay up and chat with you when you’re feeling down, or makes you little trinkets and just someone who is always there for you”, she wrote. She explained that once when the group was drinking together, her friend admitted to being a thief. The group was shocked as the friend was from a well-to-do family background.

“She proceeds to tell us in detail how she commits all these and how it’s impossible for her to get caught…and till now the stuff she stole is over 50k – multiple small thefts that added up over time. The way she described her MO was simply unbelievable…yet at the same, if you ever saw her, just because she is the last person you think to commit theft makes it all the more believable”, the woman added. Some speculated that the friend got the idea from a show and imagined herself to be a thief as nothing was spoken about it afterwards.

While the woman said she wanted to help her friend, she did not want to lose the friendship as the thief could easily go to jail if the truth came out. She asked others for advice on what she should do.

Ong Ye Kung warns of scam SMS offering HealthierSG Health Plan consult

0

SINGAPORE: Health Minister Ong Ye Kung took to social media to warn about a new scam spreading via text message (SMS). It claims to offer people the opportunity to register for a HealthierSG Health Plan consultation.

Mr Ong explained in his Tuesday (Sept 5) Facebook and Instagram posts that the scam messages contain a link that does not start with “go.gov.sg” and the sender ID is “tellingly… a random number”.

“These are clear signs that the SMS is illegitimate,” the minister added, pointing out that official messages from MOH indicate that “MOH” is the sender and contain links that start with “go.gov.sg”.

The Ministry of Health has filed a police report regarding the scam, and the phone number that spread the messages has since been terminated.

“If you suspect that you have received a scam SMS, please do not click on any links or offer personal information. If unsure, call the MOH General Hotline at 63259220,” said Mr Ong.

This is not the first time that Mr Ong has taken to social media to warn against scams. In April last year, he posted a warning after members of the public alerted him and his ministry that a doctored photo of his was used to endorse what purported to be a health product.

“These are all fake,” he said in posts on Instagram and Facebook.

“As a practice, MOH officials and political appointees do not endorse any medical products,” Mr Ong said, adding that the ministry is working with Facebook in Singapore to remove the unauthorised and misleading posts.

“Please be careful and not fall prey to such fake advertising,” he urged.

One of the photos online shows Mr Ong with his then Malaysian counterpart, Mr Khairy Jamaluddin, holding an envelope. The caption begins “Malaysian Orthopaedic Association” and appears to advertise a product that promises to cure “lumbar spondylopathy,” a form of arthritis, “with miraculous effect”.

The image was taken from a March 23 Facebook post by Mr Ong, in which he and the former Malaysian Health Minister are pictured holding a book titled In This Together: Singapore’s Covid-19 Story. /TISG

Netizens share tips & tricks with teen whose mom always barges into his room even when “IM NOT WEARING ANYTHING”

0

SINGAPORE: A 19-year-old sent an SOS to the hive mind of Reddit, asking for help with his mom who barges into his room whenever she feels like it.

“My mom has no sense of privacy,” wrote u/bluerayjay16 on the r/askSingapore on Sept 5 (Tuesday). “When I’m in a terrible mood and dont want to talk to anyone she would come in and either yell or insult me, no matter how many times i tell her to leave.” He added that he has “to scream till my throat is hoarse” to get his mom to leave his room, “but she just tells me to shut up and acts like I’m crazy.”

But his dilemma appears to have worsened because his mum now comes in while he’s changing, even when he has no clothes on “just to ask one stupid question she could’ve asked through the door” after he’s just come out of the shower.

When he tells her nicely not to come into his room, she just laughs, which makes the post-author feel crazy.

Even when he locks the door, his mum, who has multiple copies of the key, uses it to enter.

“Worst part is that she does a knock before entering the room and doesn’t even wait for me to tell her to not come… My room is the only place i feel remotely safe in bc of all the stuff gg on at home and i cant even be safe here.”

He ended his post by asking what he could do in this situation.

Fortunately, many Reddit users offered helpful advice.

“Just buy a rubber (door) stopper from the neighbourhood shop for less than a dollar and slot it under the door on the inside,” wrote one.

“Put your bed right in front of the door. a little inconvenient whenever you want to leave your room but yeah gets the job done,” offered another.

“i DIY changed my room door lock before, all u need is screwdriver and a new door lock. it costs like $15 from Fairprice,” said a Reddit user who has gone through the same thing.

“Portable door lock is an option,” another added.

However, “all these advice on changing lock or whatever is not gonna solve your issue because at the end of the day our parents are just gonna say “this is my house and I can do anything I want”. Only solution is wait till you’re older and move out,” a commenter wrote gloomily.

Goldman Sachs banker who received 10-year jail sentence over 1MDB scandal banned for life in Singapore

SINGAPORE: On Sept 5 (Tuesday), the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) issued lifetime prohibition orders against Ng Chong Hwa, otherwise known as Roger Ng, a former Goldman Sachs managing director.

The order was issued “following Mr Ng’s conviction in the United States for conspiracy to launder monies embezzled from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and violation of the United States’ Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA),” MAS said.

Ng was convicted in 2022 on bribery and money-laundering charges connected to the 1MDB scandal that saw billions of dollars siphoned from the sovereign wealth fund. He was given a 10-year jail sentence in New York last March.

MAS wrote that the former banker is permanently prohibited from performing any regulated activity under the Securities and Futures Act and from providing any financial advisory services under the Financial Advisers Act.

“He is also permanently prohibited from taking part in the management, acting as a director, or becoming a substantial shareholder, of any capital market and financial advisory services firm under the SFA and FAA,” added MAS.

The country’s central bank also said that Ng’s “severe misconduct” gave MAS cause for believing it would be “contrary to public interest to allow him to carry on business as a representative”.

Ng is the only individual to go to trial so far in the US due to the 1MDB scandal. His associate, Low Taek Jho (Jho Low), considered the mastermind behind the scheme, is a fugitive and believed to be hiding in China.

“Roger Ng was a central player in a brazen and audacious scheme that not only victimized the people of Malaysia, but also risked undermining the public’s confidence in governments, markets, businesses and other institutions on a global scale,” said Mr Breon Peace, the attorney for the Eastern District of New York, at the time of Ng’s sentencing.
