“New York calling!” — KF Seetoh invites hawkers to see if they can make it in the Big Apple

SINGAPORE: After saying that Urban Hawker, the Singapore-style food court he opened in New York with 11 of the best hawkers, is doing very well, food guru KF Seetoh invited people who are interested in setting up a similar venture to come and see for themselves.

“We are looking at more opportunities in the US and even beyond, so come here and talk to us and all of the hawkers. They have found some level of success in the United States. Then, decide if you want to take America or the world. Be proud of your craft, who you are. Show the world what you’re made of. You have the chops, believe us,” said Mr Seetoh in a video in September, when Urban Hawker marked its first anniversary.

“If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere!” the Makansutra founder said, quoting the famous Frank Sinatra song, New York, New York, over social media posts on Tuesday (Nov 14). He went on to say that Makansutra will be conducting a talk about “the opportunities and what it takes,” the “how, what, when, where, why.”

“Find out what it takes and if you would like to set up shop there yourself,” he added, announcing that Mr Alex Gaudelet, the CEO of Urban Hawker, will also be at the Nov 30 talk. People who are interested may email Mr Seetoh and his team at [email protected] or message him directly on his Facebook or Instagram pages.

Urban Hawker was a project nine years in the making, from when Mr Seetoh helped the late legendary Anthony Bourdain in 2013 at the World Street Food Congress to 2018 when he suggested at a government-led focus group that UNESCO recognize Singapore’s hawker food culture. In 2020, the same year that the recognition was granted on his birthday (Dec 16), Mr Seetoh met Mr Eldon Scott, the founder of Urban Space food halls throughout the United States.

The Singapore hawkers at Urban Hawker are Halal burger joint Ashes Burnnit, Sembawang’s White Beehoon chain and coffee stall Kopifellas, Peranakan restaurant Daisy’s Dream, Chicken Nice from Maxwell Food Centre, Dragon Phoenix (known for its chilli crab and for inventing the yam ring), Prawnaholic (serving Hokkien-style prawn noodle soup), Hainanese Western stall Smokin’ Joe, Malay and Indonesian cafe Padi@Bussorah, Indian stall Mamak’s Corner, and Mr Fried Rice. /TISG

Married man without children wants to know if he should give ‘ang baos’ to other kids

SINGAPORE: A married man without children took to social media asking if he should still give red packets containing money to the children of his relatives during Chinese New Year. In an anonymous post to popular confessions page SGWhispers, the man wrote that he and his wife were married for 10 years and they decided not to have children of their own.

The man wrote: “As the years went by, during Chinese New Year, my wife and I would give ang pows to our nieces and nephews.. My wife has a big family and many of her cousins have many kids ranging from 2-4 kids per cousin”. He added that as the number of children being born in the family kept increasing, the money they had to give out also kept going up.

“A couple of years ago, we decided to get a dog and our dog has many medical problems and in SG, vet fees are not a joke.. We give our dog a good life coz to us he is like our kid.. However, now whenever Chinese New Year comes around, we feel like we have to spend a lot of money giving ang pows to our nieces and nephews but we don’t get anything in return.. of course we are not expecting an ang pow for our dog but for 10 years we have been giving so much ang pows and it’s gotten to the point that my wife and I no longer wants to celebrate Chinese New year with the family”, the man wrote.

He added that it was less about the money and more about the expectation the family had for others to give them red packets if they had children. He also said that even if he reduced the money he gave out, the amount he did give would still add up to hundreds of dollars he could have used on his dog or family.

“My best friends and their families actually give ang pows to those with no kids but have dogs coz they recognise that the dog is family to the couple and also has vet bills to pay.. it’s the gesture of giving and not the amount.. I feel that those without kids should not be asked to give an ang pow.. I feel those with kids should give to those who have kids.. Am I being unreasonable for feeling this way? Should I just suck it up and continue the tradition? Any advise would help”, the man wrote in his post.

Netizens who commented on his post had mixed opinions. One said: “One of my cousins is married with kid. I’m single. My mum always gives his kid ang pow, but said cousin has never given me an ang pow even after he married while I was still a small teenager. So, yah, you can choose to be stingy like my cousin. Ang pows are token blessings and being stingy is a freedom of choice”.

Another wrote: “First, you have to change your mindset. Treat giving ang pow like donation or present. Give and expect nothing in return. Give them for blessing. Once a year own relative also so want to be calculative. As long as you got a job and earning, just give lah. Money can earn back. B8g (sic) or small doesn’t matter. Good deed to give bad deed to complain small amount”.

Just in case, a hongbao (or ang pow in Hokkien) is a gift of money packed into a red packet. Red is considered a symbol of luck, life and happiness. Hongbaos are given as tokens of good wishes during auspicious occasions such as Chinese New Year and weddings.

‘Promise and Pitfalls of AI’ in focus at Singapore FinTech Festival 2023

SINGAPORE: The Singapore FinTech Festival (SFF) 2023, scheduled this week from Nov 14 to 17, will focus on the “Promise and Pitfalls of AI,” said the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in a media release. “SFF 2023 will delve into AI’s promise as well as pitfalls, providing a platform to explore a unified vision for the future, harnessing its benefits while mitigating its risks.”

The theme this year is “AI for good. AI for good?” MAS pointed out that while Generative AI can boost the global GDP by nearly US$7 trillion (S$9.5 trillion) in the next 10 years, the technology carries inherent risks that require considerable caution. Leaders and experts from across the globe in the areas of finance, technology, and public policy will come together for the eighth edition of the SFF, discussing not only Artificial Intelligence (AI) but also re-architecting the financial system, preparing for future risks in technology and climate, and powering entrepreneurs and the future tech workforce.

The festival kicks off on Nov 14 with the invitation-only Elevandi Insights, where regulators, policymakers, industry leaders, and investors will participate in two events: the Capital Meets Policy Dialogue and Public-Private Roundtables.

From Nov 15 to 17, eight themes will be covered at the conference: Responsible Tokenisation, Beneficial AI, Accelerating ESG, Efficient Payments, Scaling Insurance and Pension, Digitising Inclusion, Advancing Talent, and Empowering Entrepreneurship.

The main speakers at the conference are Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnan, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Ms Kristalina Georgieva, and World Bank President Mr Ajay Banga.

Other speakers include the Managing Director of MAS, Mr Ravi Menon; the Governor of the Central Bank of Malaysia, Datuk Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour; Indonesia’s Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Mr Nadiem Makarim; and Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr, who will be attending virtually.

“The FinTech industry is poised for another major transformation, thanks to recent advances in artificial intelligence. This will usher in a new era of financial innovation and transformation. SFF 2023 will continue to be at the forefront of this global conversation, bringing together visionary leaders from civil society, technology, financial institutions, government, investment, and entrepreneurship to drive meaningful change and create a secure future for all,” said Sopnendu Mohanty, Chief FinTech Officer of MAS and Chairman of Elevandi Board.

The event was organised by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, Elevandi and Constellar, along with The Association of Banks in Singapore. Registration for SFF 2023 and more details about the festival are found at www.fintechfestival.sg. /TISG

Affordable Healthcare: Will it impact voter choices in 2024?

0

Healthcare

As the United States braces for the crescendo of the 2024 elections, the seismic issue of affordable healthcare reverberates, poised to shape the very core of America’s future.

Affordable Healthcare

Healthcare affordability resonates deeply within the collective consciousness of citizens, embodying not just financial concerns but fundamental rights and human dignity.

From the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 to the attempts at its repeal and replacement, the pendulum has swung between the aspirations of universality and the resilience of market-driven systems. As the 2024 election looms large, it heralds the need for a new chapter in the healthcare narrative.

Costs of healthcare

How can the nation reconcile the soaring costs of healthcare with the imperative of providing comprehensive coverage for all? Is a universal healthcare system the panacea, or does a market-based approach better serve the intricate tapestry of American diversity?

2024 aspirants

The candidates stepping onto this fiercely contested battlefield do so under the scrutiny of an electorate yearning for substantive solutions, not mere rhetoric. Their policies on healthcare affordability will be the litmus test, the crucible through which their commitment to the populace will be measured. The promises made on the campaign trail will echo through the annals of history, defining not only their political legacies but also the fate of countless lives.

Beyond affordable healthcare

Moreover, the impact of this election on healthcare affordability extends far beyond the boundaries of policy reform. It resonates with the sanctity of doctor-patient relationships, the resilience of healthcare infrastructure, and social and economic equality. It is a fulcrum that balances the scales of justice, where the privilege of health intersects with the fundamental rights of every citizen.

The question that now lingers is not just about political victories but about the triumph of a nation’s conscience.

Does any of the candidates have this conscience?

X users saying President Xi of China cleared up San Francisco’s streets more than Democrats ever did

San Francisco President Xi

The recent scandal of the displacement of homeless individuals in San Francisco for the visit of President Xi of China has made conservatives talk. X users state that the Democrats are building a literal wall to keep homeless Americans away from areas the Chinese President will visit. For obvious reasons, this is meant to show that the city is vibrant and safe.

According to Fox News, San Francisco is undergoing a major transformation in preparation for a crucial U.S.-China summit, with initiatives such as the removal of homeless camps. The city aims to showcase cleanliness and attract an estimated $53 million boost to the economy during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

Furthermore, while the efforts have noticeably improved street cleanliness, concerns arise about the displacement of homeless individuals. Emails reveal city officials’ focus on cleaning areas close to key summit locations. The conference offers economic prospects for San Francisco, but critics question the city’s priorities, emphasizing the need for a sustainable solution to homelessness.

Displacement of homeless people in San Francisco for President Xi’s visit

X users state that it literally took a few days for the city council to clear up the homeless people from the area. They state that this is quite possible if the Democrats intended to actually solve the problem. However, seemingly, they’re only doing it to impress foreign leaders.

Following that, X users state that the Chinese President managed to solve this problem even before his visit. Others wonder who is really in charge of the Democrats as they are going to extreme lengths to impress other nations. For the most part, many are upset to see San Francisco end up in such a dystopian way.

In addition to this, social media commenters state that the cost of placing the homeless people in high end hotels is most probably very expensive. They claim that it will most definitely shock the tax payers of the city. Regardless, many are calling on the bluff of the Democrats for doing this.

Grab passenger says drivers must get enough sleep before accepting another ride, but Grab customer service “didn’t get it”

0

SINGAPORE: A man took to social media in dismay after talking to the customer service of Grab, whom they felt failed to take their complaint seriously and prevent a possible mishap from occurring with other passengers.

u/TheBigM72 wrote on Reddit Singapore on Nov 10 (Friday) that he and his wife had been on the way to the airport in a vehicle they had booked from Grab. Unfortunately, the driver seemed very tired. “His eyes kept closing, at least 3 times actually closed but multiple times almost there,” the man wrote. To show how tired the driver was, the man wrote that the Grab driver had veered out of the lane but fortunately managed to steer the car in the right direction in the nick of time; otherwise, the vehicle would have struck a barrier.

“He also showed low situational awareness almost hitting car when he wanted to move one lane to left and car two lanes to the left wanted to move right one lane,” added the Reddit user, who appeared to believe that he and his wife considered themselves fortunate to have made it to the airport in one piece.

Upon getting there, they “immediately contacted Grab, making sure to have live chat with support, to beg them to block him from accepting another ride for few hours until he gets some sleep”, wrote u/TheBigM72.

The passengers called Grab with no desire for the driver to be penalized but to ensure that he would not take another passenger before getting enough sleep for safety reasons.

He was, therefore, disappointed with Grab’s response, saying: “CS just talked about, oh we will give him a strike for misconduct. We will educate him for next time etc etc. We told them we were not interested in punishment but it was urgent safety situation that he doesn’t take another fare before sleeping. But they didn’t get it.”

The Independent Singapore has reached out to Grab for further comment or update.

Sleepy drivers are a hazard to themselves and others, and driving while not getting enough sleep is considered to be very dangerous as it impairs judgment and slows down reaction time. “The exact prevalence is not known in Singapore. Sleepiness-related crashes is an under-recognised problem and may be categorised as fatigue and inattention,” says Singhealth.com.

The best thing a sleepy driver can do is simply stop driving, pull over to the side of the street and then call someone else to come and drive your car. The driver should get enough sleep before retaking the wheel. /TISG

“We MUST Land NOW!!!” — Video about Singapore Airlines flight critically low fuel landing in Batam goes viral

SINGAPORE: On Nov 11 (Saturday), a video was posted on YouTube showing what happened on Singapore Airlines Flight SQ319 from London to Changi Airport, which made an emergency landing in Batam on Oct 25, 2022.

The video titled, “’We MUST Land NOW!!’ The Incredible Story of Singapore Airlines Flight 319′” by the Mentour Pilot YouTube channel highlights that the most pressing concern was the aircraft’s fuel levels had grown critically low, causing the pilots to declare a fuel emergency long before the plane landed. To add to the pilots’ stress, they received a message saying they were not permitted to land in Batam because they had not reached out to the air traffic control tower in Batam to obtain clearance for the plane’s intended landing.

The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300ER, had left London on Oct 24. Should the need arise, its listed alternate destination airports were Paya Lebar Air Base (Singapore), Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and Senai International Airport (Johor).

As it turned out, the weather conditions in Singapore were not good at the time of the flight’s scheduled landing, so the aircraft could not land. The pilots decided to land at Batam, which had not been on the list of alternate destinations. Weather conditions over Batam, while clear at first, grew worse later. Rain over Paya Lebar Air Base and Senai International Airport meant the plane couldn’t land in these areas either.

It took the plane four tries before it landed safely. Fortunately, each of the 280 people on board arrived at Batam safely, and no harm was done to the aircraft.

And while the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) is quoted in The Straits Times as saying that there had been shortcomings in handling the flight, Mr Alan Foo, senior director of the safety regulation group at CAAS said that no regulatory breaches had been committed by SIA, even though the “final reserve fuel,” the minimum amount required for an aircraft to stay airborne safely had been below level when the aircraft landed in Batam.

The YouTube channel Mentour Pilot belongs to Mr Petter Hörnfeldt. He often tells the stories of notable aviation accidents and incidents. Mr Hörnfeldt’s account of the story is based on the final report of the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau of Singapore’s Ministry of Transport, published on Sept 25, which can be accessed here.

Woman says her fiancé’s mother insists on ‘helping’ during their wedding; groom wants his mother to oversee

0

SINGAPORE: A woman who was about to tie the knot felt that she ran into a number of problems during the planning stage which caused her to look at her fiancé and his mother rather differently. In an anonymous post to popular confessions page SGWhispers, the woman said that the issue was twofold; her fiancé was not involved in the planning himself but kept trying to push his mother’s opinion into things.

She wrote that her fiancé did not “put in effort in planning things (dates/trips/wedding etc) until after multiple “pushes” and arguments. We had a lot of arguments which resulted in him wanting to handle the remaining items of the wedding. But every time I check in for updates, I can see he doesn’t actively chase for one from the vendors that we will end up arguing”.

She also added that she wanted to shift their marriage to have it sooner rather than later. While her husband-to-be did not seem to have any issues with his initially, “it only became an issue when his mum wants things to be done her way and I am not 100% receptive”. The woman added that while she initially thought his mother was nice and welcoming, dealing with her fiancé’s mother made her reconsider her first impression.

As they planned for their engagement ceremony and wedding, the woman wrote that they already got some of her fiancé’s mother’s suggestions. “She wanted to invite more people and wants to include her own dessert table without consulting me, the other person in this marriage. She also wanted her friend to source our rings for us. But because she was upset at my partner’s lack of communication, she was “forcing” us to accept her and his family’s help for decorating some gifts”, the woman wrote.

While the bride-to-be added that it was a small item, it was something she wanted to do with her partner. “I told him multiple times that it’s really nice of her to want to help, but let’s have an attempt at it by ourselves first before we go to her if we really need that help. Then, his mum started saying unreasonable things to my partner like “if you don’t accept our help, then no one would be there at your funeral”… I was taken aback because why does she have to take it that far?” the woman wrote.

She continued in her post: “At first she had accepted it, or so I thought. But when my partner are arguing over a trivial matter, he brought it up again and he himself was threatening me saying that since I don’t want to let his mum take over the decoration of gifts, I should at least do it at his house where his mum can oversee things, and if not, it would be the end of us. I felt so pressured and I just couldn’t sit with that idea. What I initially thought we had agreed on, doing it together without anyone judging us or overlooking us, became something where I had to accept some hidden “terms and conditions””.

She explained that she became rather distraught at the thought of them calling off the wedding, so she backed down and told her fiancé to go ahead and do the gifts with his family the way they wanted. She added that it made her feel awful because she had no control over something she had to spend money on. The woman also added that through this entire process, she could feel that her partner was slowly turning his back against her. “I am contemplating whether I should still continue with this relationship with him switching up on his words like this and also already dreading dealing with his mum. I still love him a lot, but how much more do I have to give in/compromise? How do I make this work?” she asked netizens.

Netizens who commented on her post urged her to reconsider the marriage altogether. One wrote: “you need to sit down think about this carefully. marriage isn’t an easy decision. the last thing any lady wants is a husband who is dismissive of every thing they do. it’s call “life partner”. partner is by meaning support. if getting married already this bad. think about when having a baby, handling the baby education and etc etc. you might be left to handle everything alone. if you decided no, be prepared to lose the money but save your remaining life of unhappiness”.

Another netizen commented: “trust me. the one who is spineless is your husband-to-be. i feel sorry for you having YOUR wedding being planned by an unwanted third party who doesn’t understand you. i bet your husband speaks/complains a lot about it to her to the point she felt that she had to step in and “rescue” her son in planning the wedding. i’m not sure how far you both have come til this point. if you think your man will not be any more mature than his current self.. then forget this marriage, because you’re gonna be on your own when you live with his family. he ain’t got your back when problems arise”. /TISG

Man says he can be very negative, so he hides his true feelings and sugarcoats his words

0

SINGAPORE: A man who felt that he was mostly a negative person decided to hide his true opinions and respond in a socially correct manner. In an anonymous post to popular confessions page SGWhispers, the man said that he was not a person who motivated others but instead turned to worst-case scenarios. He also added that he would sometimes forget to sugarcoat his words.

However, “a few of my close ones are telling me that I should learn to be positive and always speak positive(ly)”, the man wrote. Because of this, the man added that he would hide his worst opinions and give socially correct responses. He continued: “I don’t just sugarcoat but drown them in sugar or silence. They seems (sic) to love (or) hate it. Often thinking I am not genuine and trying to brush them off. Hmm, how can I be genuine when I am not allow(ed) part of my opinions because they’re negative? Sometimes I could feel they’re intentionally cutting me off when they THINK the conversation is going to turn negative”.

He added that he found communication to have become very tiring. The people around him would only talk about things they cared about while cutting him off when he tried to share what he wanted, or they would pretend to listen to him. “I have been thinking hard because this is happening with my family and a close friend. So is it really that I am so irksome when I talk?” he asked netizens.

Those who commented on his post said he could still speak his mind without being insensitive to others. One said: “Speaking your mind is not an excuse for being insensitive to people’s feelings. There are many ways to phrase the same points, without upsetting people. You can be honest AND still be seen as a kind/considerate person. Read some relevant books, tweak your behaviour and re-establish your reputation”.

Another netizen commented: “Widen your knowledge on the subject before you talk. Don’t just limit yourself to your existing thoughts. Understand where others are coming from. Being a good listener helps a lot to appreciate other’s views. If majority of people cut you off or think you’re negative, so you are. Reflect & improve. Spread positivity and make the world a better & nicer place for everyone including yourself”.
