Number of PHVs increases as road hails decline

0

SINGAPORE: Data from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has shown a growing shift in commuter preferences, marked by a rise in app-based rides and a decline in roadside taxi fares.

In September alone, the average daily passenger volume for taxis and private-hire vehicles exhibited an upward trend, reaching 618,000 trips, representing a 3 per cent increase compared to last year.

However, a closer look at the figures reveals a divergence in the dynamics of taxi services. The number of taxi trips originating from roadside pickups dwindled to an average of 80,000 trips per day in September, showcasing a continued decline throughout the year.

Even during peak holiday periods, taxi stands at shopping malls witnessed queues of taxis awaiting customers as more travellers opt for pre-booked trips.

Industry analysts suggest that the convenience of pre-booking rides through apps contributes to this shift in behaviour, with commuters preferring the certainty and efficiency offered by digital platforms. Passengers can also check the trip’s price upfront and ensure that they have a vehicle waiting for them by using digital platforms.

The data indicates that from January to April, the number of taxi passengers hailed from the roadside averaged 90,000 daily trips. However, this figure steadily decreased after May, reaching 80,000 trips per day in September. Simultaneously, the usage of e-hailing services surged, with daily rides increasing from over 480,000 in January to more than 530,000 in September.

Industry experts also suggest that the overall increase in the total passenger volume of taxis and private-hire cars compared to last year may be linked to the rising costs of car ownership. More individuals seem to be opting for the convenience of ride-hailing services rather than dealing with the expenses and hassles of driving.

The shift towards private hire vehicles can also be seen in the number of licenses for such vehicles vs taxis.

Professional taxi driver licenses are declining, totalling 91,961 in September (1,600 less than in January). This contrasts with the growth in private-hire driver licenses, which increased by over 4,000, reaching 53,148 in September.

As the traditional taxi landscape adapts to the surge in app-based rides, experts emphasize the need for the industry to address the evolving needs of commuters, especially the elderly, and consider more convenient ways for them to book taxis or private-hire cars.

Baby panda Le Le separated from mother Jia Jia amid looming China return

0

SINGAPORE: Mandai Wildlife Group has announced the separation of two-year-old giant panda Le Le from his mother, Jia Jia. The decision came after the group observed avoidant behaviour from the adult panda.

Le Le, born to giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia in Singapore, recently celebrated his second birthday in August. Last month, Jia Jia displayed signs of rejecting Le Le, such as actively driving away the cub. In a statement released this week, the group explained that Jia Jia’s avoidance towards Le Le necessitated staggered appearance times for the mother-son duo at the River Wonders.

Le Le is scheduled to be displayed from 10am-2pm, while Jia Jia will appear from 2 to 6pm.

Mandai Wildlife Group clarified that this developmental stage is part of the natural growth process for giant pandas, as they are solitary animals.

Singaporeans have approximately a month left to visit Le Le at the River Wonders before he is returned to China. According to the agreement between Singapore and China, locally-born giant pandas must be returned when they turn two to participate in the giant panda breeding program.

Le Le’s return date has been postponed to Jan 16, and a farewell party is planned for mid-December.

Le Le’s final public appearance at the River Wonders will be on December 13, marking the beginning of his quarantine until departure in January.

Mandai Wildlife Group revealed that Le Le has been vaccinated twice and will undergo a comprehensive health examination during quarantine.

In preparation for his return to China, the wildlife group is constructing a customized box for Le Le. The cub will undergo adaptive training involving positive reinforcement with food rewards to voluntarily enter and acclimate to the box. This ongoing training aims to make the transfer to China as stress-free as possible on the day of the flight.

Mandai Wildlife Group is collaborating closely with Singapore Airlines (SIA) on logistics to ensure Le Le’s comfortable journey to his new home in China. As the farewell preparations unfold, Singaporeans are encouraged to seize the opportunity to bid farewell to Le Le during his remaining days at the River Wonders.

Fake WhatsApp Web phishing scam: 237 victims, $606K losses

SINGAPORE: Phishing scams have surged in Singapore, reaching alarming levels, as scammers employ increasingly sophisticated tactics, including hacking into WhatsApp accounts, leading to a growing number of victims.

Since November, the authorities have recorded at least 237 individuals falling prey to WhatsApp-related phishing scams, resulting in financial losses exceeding $606,000. The police have highlighted a concerning new trend where scammers infiltrate victims’ WhatsApp accounts to impersonate them and manipulate their contacts into transferring funds.

In these cases, victims unwittingly click on WhatsApp web links that mirror the official WhatsApp website and scan a QR code, mistakenly leading them to enter a fraudulent online version of WhatsApp created by the scammer. Once inside, scammers seize the victim’s chat account, assuming the identities of friends and family. Exploiting this deception, scammers fabricate convincing stories, duping unsuspecting contacts into sending money to unfamiliar bank accounts or PayNow numbers.

The authorities emphasize the importance of public vigilance and recommend additional security measures. The police urge individuals to activate two-factor authentication on their WhatsApp accounts and exercise caution when accessing the platform online. They stress the need for users to verify the authenticity of the online website they are logging into, avoiding sharing confidential account information with anyone.

Victims typically discover the scam only after contacting the supposed recipient of the funds. Law enforcement encourages swift reporting of such incidents to aid in tracking down the perpetrators and preventing further financial losses.

As the wave of phishing scams continues to rise, the public is urged to stay informed and take proactive steps to protect themselves against evolving threats in the digital landscape.

Turkey scandal of Eric Adams, just tip of the iceberg?

Eric Adams, Turkey scandal

In an interview, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo commented on the controversy surrounding New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ alleged Turkey cash deal and said that it may just be the tip of the iceberg.

Adams was accused of expediting the construction of the Turkish embassy in the city during his candidacy.

Cuomo admitted that he lacked detailed information about the investigation into Adams’ ties with Turkey. He hinted that the investigation likely received approval from the highest echelons of the U.S. Department of Justice.

The Turkey scandal, expediting a permit

“The only thing I’ve read about is the Mayor made a phone call to a police commissioner to try to expedite a permit for the Turkish embassy,” Cuomo remarked. “If that’s a crime, they’re going to have to lock up almost everybody.”

Federal agents are currently delving into Adams’ text messages and other data to ascertain whether his campaign accepted illegal donations from Turkish officials during his mayoral run in 2021.

While Adams has not faced formal accusations of wrongdoing yet, a recent raid at the residence of his chief fundraiser, Brianna Suggs, has heightened scrutiny. Items seized during the raid included a manila folder labeled with Adams’ name, three iPhones, and a laptop.

Federal investigators are looking into $14,000 in campaign donations to Adams from employees of the KSK Construction Group, which boasts ties to the Turkish government.

Cannot remember?

“I cannot tell you … how many thousands of people contribute to our campaign,” Adams stated in an earlier interview. “I attend so many different fundraisers, meet so many different people throughout the part of raising funds. I am not familiar with this organization.”

As the investigation unfolds, scrutiny of Mayor Adams and the alleged dealings surrounding the Turkish embassy intensifies, raising questions about the connection between politics and impropriety.

Alleged arsonist forces downtown LA to a standstill

arsonist

A massive fire caused by an alleged arsonist wreaked havoc on a section of the I-10 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles, grinding it to a halt this Saturday.

A Deliberate Act

California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed that the destructive inferno was no accident but a deliberate act of an arsonist.

“There was malice intent,” declared Gov. Newsom, shedding light on the preliminary investigation that concluded the fire was intentionally set in the storage yard beneath the freeway overpass.

“It was arson. It was done and set intentionally,” emphasized Newsom, pointing to the incident that has left the sprawling city grappling with unforeseen consequences.

Extensive Damage

The repercussions of the fire are extensive, with the freeway, a vital artery in the city’s transportation network, remaining closed since Saturday. Commuters are experiencing substantial delays as detour routes are inundated with an unprecedented influx of vehicles and traffic jams.

100 columns destroyed?

The destructive blaze took a toll on over 100 columns supporting the freeway, as revealed by Gov. Newsom. Despite the severity of the damage, initial assessments of the structural integrity are more promising than anticipated. However, the possibility of demolition is still on the table.

Motives?

The extent of the disruption is undeniable; a concrete timeline for the potential reopening of the freeway remains uncertain. The incident has not only raised concerns about the immediate aftermath but also prompted questions about the motives behind such a deliberate act of arson. Authorities are intensifying efforts to apprehend those responsible for this shocking disruption to the heart of Los Angeles’ transportation network.

The ‘Housing First’ model and the 2024 elections

0

2024 elections

At the core of America’s urban landscapes lies a crisis that’s both pervasive, insidious, and extremely challenging — homelessness. But amidst the challenges, the Housing First model emerges as a beacon of hope, offering not just shelter but a profound shift in perspective.

Housing First model

The Housing First model advocates for providing individuals experiencing homelessness with immediate, permanent housing, no strings attached. The mantra is simple – “housing is a right, not a reward.”

This approach also offers robust support services, tailored to individual needs, like mental health care, addiction treatment, and employment assistance. Addressing the root causes of homelessness within a stable housing environment, not only provides a roof over one’s head but nurtures holistic rehabilitation and a return to self-sufficiency.

The Housing First model extends beyond policies and funding. It challenges citizens to reassess their values and priorities. It transcends political lines, delving into the very essence of what it means to support the vulnerable in society.

Good or bad?

As the 2024 elections approach, this model has become a linchpin issue, dividing political platforms, sentiments, and ideologies. Advocates argue for its effectiveness and the reduction in societal costs associated with emergency services and incarceration. They rally for increased funding, asserting it as a humane, cost-effective solution.

Conversely, skeptics question the fiscal feasibility, worried about the strain on government resources and taxpayer dollars. There are concerns about the potential enabling of certain behaviors and the practicality of providing housing without stringent conditions.

Crossroads

The 2024 elections stand at a crossroads where the nation confronts a policy choice and a moral one. The decision on the Housing First model signifies a turning point, not just in the fight against homelessness but in how a society chooses to address its most pressing challenges—with empathy, pragmatism, and an unwavering commitment to human dignity.

X users saying Democrat cities are a dystopian future with pictures of products instead of actual items on display in stores

0

The rampant crime in Democrat majority cities have led to major corporations to react in a cunning manner. Currently, more and more stores are trying to protect their $1 merchandise more than ever. They are displaying pictures of actual pill boxes and other necessity items as photographs on shelves.

Following that, if someone is interested in buying a strip of Panadols, they would need to call a store assistant. However, in most other countries, this is not the reality as people are free to browse as they like. Unfortunately, due to massive robberies and the lack of punishment for criminals, this is the future of some American cities.

Just a few months ago, there were mass robberies in Los Angeles. These stores are luxury designer stores. According to GlobalNews, Los Angeles witnessed another high-end store raid with thieves fleeing Ksubi in a $100,000 heist. Days before, a crew stole luxury items from Nordstrom. About 12 masked burglars rushed in, grabbing goods before fleeing in waiting cars. No arrests made; flash robberies persist, prompting a new task force formation.

Are Democrat cities a dystopian future?

Some are joking that this is Joe Biden’s America, where taxpayer funds are spent frivolously elsewhere rather than helping the American people. Another X user posted a photo of Hershey bars being blocked in protective containers. This is simply to avoid people stealing a literal bar of chocolate.

In addition to this, X users are joking that there are only two ways to solve this problem. The first solution is to jail the criminals who are stealing these products. The other solution is to literally lock up the products in a cage. However, it appears that the government has chosen which to lock up.

Criticisms towards the Biden administration are at an all time high as users feel that the current government is not doing their job. Research done by the University of Pennsylvania shows that crime rates have drastically increased since the 2020. This should be a concerning fact to the government.

Others are comparing America to third world countries, and they state that third world countries are literally allowing their consumers to shop freely. Furthermore, users feel that America is no longer a first world country with the state it currently is in now.

Eilish is attracted to women but is intimidated by their beauty

Eilish

Billie Eilish disclosed some confusing moments with her assertion that she is attracted to women in a candid interview for Variety’s “The Power of Women” issue. Despite feeling drawn to women, the “Bad Guy” singer expressed that she has often sensed a lack of reciprocation in her relationships with them.

Eilish, 21, shared her deep connections with women in her life. She shared that she loves them very much, love them as people and are attracted to them for real. She did, however, admit to being intimidated by their beauty and presence.

While she didn’t explicitly address the possibility of a romantic relationship with another woman, Eilish discussed how her self-confidence, or the lack thereof, has affected her perception of womanhood and impacted her dating life. She revealed never feeling like a desirable or feminine woman and the struggle to see herself as a “pretty girl.” She shared that she never felt like a woman. In May, Eilish and Jesse Rutherford called it quits.

Wearing big clothes

Eilish admitted to coping with these thoughts by wearing only big clothing to hide her form, emphasising that it wasn’t about avoiding physical relations but rather limiting visual access to her body due to uncertainty. She explained that revealing her body at that time would have devastated her if subjected to criticism.

Despite her efforts, Eilish has faced scrutiny over her body and sexuality for years, an experience she finds “weird and upsetting.” Despite the fact that she rarely discloses her dating life, the seven-time Grammy winner has often called out internet trolls who make comments about her body. Eilish revealed to struggle with regular comments about her image in a Vogue interview in June, emphasising that even while she now values herself more and prioritises her feelings, the negative comments still hurt profoundly.

Conservatives calling for more mental asylums after seeing woman dresses as an animal and rolling in mud

0

The mental decline of some individuals are concerning, especially in the day and age of social media. Previously, it was relatively unheard of for a woman to dress herself up as a pig and wallow in mud in the comfort of her bathroom. Most X users find it very uncomfortable to see such a sight.

It appears the normalisation of people fetishing themselves to be an animal is a trend on social media. Previously, there was a man who spent a small fortune to turn himself into a dog, which for obvious reasons, received scorn from all corners of the internet. Furthermore, the real question here is this a fetish or they are genuinely feeling this way?

NDTV states, Japanese man, Toco, spent $14,000 transforming into a dog, fulfilling his dream. Filming his experience on YouTube, he debuted as a collie, interacting with people and dogs, sharing his story but keeping his identity private.

Conservatives want more mental asylums after seeing woman dressing as a pig

Furthermore, X users state that back in the 1960s, Americans visualised the future to have flying cars. Unfortunately to that reality, we have fully grown adults pretending to be farm animals. There are different opinions when it comes to this topic as some may see it as cosplaying rather than the individual wanting to be the actual animal.

The term for this could be defined as someone being a “furry,” as they feel attracted or attractive when wearing these costumes. It is most definitely peculiar as most people are not into that sort of thing.

In addition to this, X users state that with the advent of social media and for people to fully express their weirdness, they are starting to lose their dignity. However, others are saying that if someone is willing to do this, they might not even have any dignity to begin with.

Others state that these people are the core supporters of Joe Biden. Several X users feel that Democrats are just like that. Another person claims that this woman is the average cabinet member for the Biden administration. This reference is in lieu of Sam Brinton, a non-binary individual working in the Department of Energy.

“The American Dream no longer exists” – Chicago migrants

0

American Dream

A growing number of migrants attempting to settle in Chicago are opting to abandon the ‘American Dream’ rather than face a miserable life on the unforgiving streets mired with danger.

The American Dream is Gone

“The American Dream doesn’t exist anymore,” lamented 39-year-old father Michael Castejon. “There’s nothing here for us.” Castejon cited the prolonged asylum process and the insufficient income from an off-the-books construction job as reasons for their departure. “How many more months of living on the streets will it take? It’s better that I leave. At least I have my mother back home.”

Jampacked Homeless Shelters

With Chicago’s homeless shelters at full capacity and 20,700 migrants continuing to arrive in the city since August 2022, the situation is increasingly dire.

Late last month, 3,000 migrants were living on the streets, prompting the city government to dispatch 16 buses overnight in an attempt to provide warmth and assistance.

Catholic Charities of Chicago has stepped in to aid the exodus, facilitating the relocation of over 2,000 migrants to other states where they have relatives or friends.

Disappointment, Failure, Hopelessness

Jose Nauh, 22, who initially traveled to Chicago in search of promised free shelter, food, and public benefits, discovered the harsh reality and promptly returned to Texas.

Even families, like Diana Vera’s, are seeking refuge elsewhere. Vera, along with her three children and daughter-in-law, boarded a bus to Detroit hoping that a resident cousin would provide support. “We heard that there are a lot of jobs over there even if you don’t have a permit,” Vera told the Tribune. It seems she was mistaken.

The Dream Collapses

As the city grapples with the challenges of migrant integration, the approaching winter intensifies the plight of those on the streets. The exodus raises critical questions about the promises and realities faced by those pursuing the elusive American Dream.
