According to a Poll published on June 3, Democrats in Congress are more interested in exploiting the nation’s immigration issue for political gain. 60 per cent of voters at a Quinnipiac University Poll said they believed this, while 34 percent said they are more interested in “resolving the nation’s immigration issue.

The poll which surveyed 1,020 voters between June 27 and July 1 and has a margin of error of 3.7 per cent said that although the majority of voters disapprove of the way Trump is managing immigration, they are also unhappy at how the Democrats are squeezing the issue.

The President had earlier warned that the Democrats will be badly bruised if they put abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as their main campaign issue for the upcoming elections. His warning rang as more Democrats joined calls to dismantle the agency nationwide.

Hundreds of thousands rallied around the country on Saturday to protest the immigration policy which resulted in more than 2,000 children being separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border. In DC alone, an estimated 30,000 people convened on Lafayette Square on Saturday to protest the “inhumane” treatment of undocumented immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border

Voters still disapprove 58 to 39 percent , even if they are not impressed with how Democrats have comported themselves on policy, the poll noted. Immigration is destined to become a major theme heading into the midterm elections in November.

Results from Quinnipiac poll, which surveyed 1,020 voters between June 27 and July 1 and has a margin of error of 3.7 percent, mirror other polls conducted following the conclusion of Trump’s policy of separating illegal immigrants. CBS published a poll in June showing that nearly 73 percent of Americans oppose splitting up families as a form of deterrence.

A movement to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is responsible for deporting illegal aliens inside the country, has begun to materialize within the Democratic Party. Several prominent Democratic lawmakers have even voiced support for such a campaign.

Democrats led by the likes of Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bill de Blasio have openly called for dismantling ICE in protesting Trump’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy.

“The president’s deeply immoral actions have made it obvious: We need to rebuild our immigration system from top to bottom, starting by replacing ICE with something that reflects our morality and that works,” Warren said.

“If we are to uphold civic justice, we must abolish ICE and see to it that our undocumented neighbors are treated with the dignity and respect owed to all people, regardless of citizenship status,” Ocasio-Cortez advocated.

Pollls however have consistently showed that Democrats and Republicans share broadly the same view about how to move forward on illegal immigration – that illegal border-crossers should return to their place of origin.

Another poll by Harvard-Harris on Monday said that a substantial majority of voters said illegal border-crossers and the children who accompany them should be returned to their home countries. More than 84 per cent of Republicans, 79 per cent of Democrats and 78 per cent of independents favored hiring more immigration judges “to process people in custody faster.”
