A sign supposedly from Marine Parade Town Council which warns residents not to play chess at common areas like the void deck, has drawn the ire of netizens.
Some Reddit users wondered if the sign was a hoax. But at least one user confirmed that the sign was “pasted all over the void deck of the HDB flats near my house.”
Some other users felt sorry for the uncles who congregate in the void decks to play chess.
“I felt really bad seeing these signs all over the HDB common area. Normally at any time of the day there are groups of uncles playing chess in that area, drinking coffee and enjoying their lives, what is wrong with that…”
“Well the council obviously thinks that these chess uncles are a menace to society.”
Yet others pointed out that the sign did not say that one cannot play Chinese-chess or animal-chess.
The most voted comment on in the topic in Reddit is this:
“Living in a flat these days, one gets the message that you’re not to do anything in the common areas, except be common. Unless you’re grassroots, organising an event with an MP involved, of course. Then you have carte blanche. Pronounced kad bran. Because we speak mother tongue cum English.”
