0

Jennifer Aniston just adopted a new puppy. The actress uploaded a video of it on Instagram and it is already melting everyone’s hearts.

In the midst of uncertainty such as the pandemic, US election year as well as climate change, all you need is a puppy to make things right again.

The Friends star uploaded a clip of her new puppy which she named Lord Chesterfield. “I’d like to introduce to you the newest member of our family….this is (a very tired) Lord Chesterfield,” said Jennifer via Instagram. “He stole my heart immediately.” “Chesterfield, have you fallen asleep with your bone in your mouth?” asked Jennifer. “I think you have.” Who among us hasn’t fallen asleep in the middle of doing something? We can all relate to Lord Chesterfield.

Netizens concerned over Singapore-Indonesia reciprocal green lane

0

Singapore – Members from the online community have expressed their concern regarding the reciprocal green lane (RGL) for essential business and official travel being set up between Singapore and Indonesia given the steady increase of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) announced on Monday (Oct 12) that applications for the RGL will commence on Oct 26, with travel beginning soon after. Indonesian citizens and Singapore citizens and residents are eligible for the cross-border travel between the two countries.

Travellers are required to follow Covid-19 safety measures and abide by public health precautions imposed by both countries. This includes getting a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) swab test before departure and after arrival from mutually recognised health institutions, according to a channelnewsasia.com report.

More details on the RGL procedures, requirements and protocols will be announced “in due course,” said MFA.

Meanwhile, members from the online community expressed their concern on the plan due to the possibility of an increase in Covid-19 imported cases in Singapore. “Allowing a country with high Covid cases to come in is a big mistake,” commented Facebook user Colin Lim.

“If any of our Singaporeans got (sic) infected even though with safety precautions, who is going to bear the medical (costs) and medical (institutions) in Indonesia already cannot control their local infections,” said Facebook user Darry Kua.

Many asked to spare a thought for Singapore’s overworked healthcare workers.

On Sunday (Oct 11), 4,497 new confirmed Covid-19 cases were reported by Indonesia’s Health Ministry, bringing the total number of infections to 333,449. The report included 79 reported deaths, increasing the death toll to 11,844. Statistics show the number of cases in Indonesia has risen erratically since the beginning of the pandemic in the country.

Still, some agreed that “business and economic activities needed to start to revive the economy and safeguard jobs,” as highlighted by a netizen’s comment. “I believe Singapore government has put in strict measure (sic) and it will boost Singapore back to normal when it proves (sic) to work,” added Facebook user Glen Tew.

Employees in retrenching companies experiencing lower morale

Employees from industries experiencing retrenchment over this pandemic have reported lower morale and higher levels of stress as a result of higher workload and lack of clarity in the direction of the companies.

Even though the extent of the impact of retrenchment on employees’ mental health is not clear, workplace stress has been shown to increase over the pandemic. A survey by research centre Mind Science Centre and a mental health online platform called the Community Care Buddy in mid-August reported that three in five telecommuters and half of the front liners felt stressed at work.

Compared to last year, the number of people seeking help for their mental health increased. The Ministry of Health reported more than a 50 percent increase in calls to the IMH Helpline between April to July, according to a written reply by the Ministry of Health on COVID-19-related stresses.

Retrenchment levels in June has more than doubled since March this year and is expected to continue increasing through the end of the year.

Higher unpaid overtime hours
Amy (not her real name), 26-year old equipment engineer working in the oil and gas industry said to The Independent Singapore, “The type of work that I do remains unchanged, but the workload has increased (each engineer supports more areas of the plant),” as part of cost-cutting measures that her company is undertaking.

According to the report from the MOM, around two in five people have been retrenched since the start of the year to June in the petroleum, chemical and pharmaceutical products industries.

As a result, she works longer hours than before, sometimes till 8 pm or 9 pm on weekdays. She also works more frequently on weekends to complete tasks — something that she had to do only occasionally before.

Similarly, Shawn (not his real name), a 26-year old programme executive in an event-based company wrote that he now has “longer working hours due to the larger amount of tasks to complete.” Additionally, “meeting times no longer happen within the 8 am to 5 pm time but at other odd hours to cater to timezones of other campuses,” he added.

As physical contact consists of a large part of their activities, the event-based company has been hit hard with only a third of “adept” employees in Shawn’s department left to take on the same amount of workload.

“It has impacted me greatly with an influx of stress and workload,” he said. “The idea of losing team members and having to take on more responsibilities due to them leaving has caused me to wonder whether the company appreciates the team.”

Both Amy and Shawn have chosen not to be identified for fear of reprisals.

Higher anxiety and lower morale
The lack of transparency in the retrenchment exercises coupled with uncertainty in the direction of the company is causing high anxiety amongst employees left behind.

Shawn said that the lack of “transparency in addressing team members who are affected by the change” has negatively impacted employees’ morale and increased distrust in the leaders.

Eventually, many employees who were not retrenched left voluntarily after the restructure despite the ongoing recession.

Similarly, Amy said that the lack of clarity in the direction of the company on top of the ongoing retrenchment in the company has created much uncertainty and reduced morale amongst the employees.

“Anyone could be next on the chopping board,” she said. “It is very stressful to think about the security of your own rice bowl…[R]ight now, I am pushing myself to focus my energy on my work and to just survive”

Mental health support required consistently
The pandemic has highlighted the lack of resilience in mental health care in the workforce.

As someone who has worked and managed large teams in the tech industry for over 25 years, Sanjeev Magotra, 52, has frequently seen stress and motivation issues at work. With the pandemic, these issues have become “very visible as people are now open to talking about it”.

Magotra believes that mental health is something that needs to be worked on consistently, similar to their physical fitness, and it is time for enterprises to change their mindset towards their employees’ mental health.

“Typically, enterprises look at mental health as something that only 5 to 10 percent of employees needs. However, now is the stage when we need to recognise that all employees need the support,” he said.

That was his idea behind Joye.ai, the world’s first voice-enabled platform that utilises artificial intelligence for employers to track their employees’ mental health.

His digital platform encourages frequent engagement in their actual state by facilitating the experience through voice-enabled detections. Employees can engage verbally on their thoughts and progress, and the programme would then detect what they are going through and provide suggestions on what to do. This also enables employers to better track their employees’ mental status. /TISG

Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik enjoy first date night as new parents

0

Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik finally had their first date night as new parents. Gigi’s mother Yolanda Hadid babysat for the evening. Gigi and Zayn welcomed their daughter in September.

It has been a long time since the couple went on a date together and they finally had a chance to spend some romantic time since the birth of their daughter.

The model described her date night with her partner on her Instagram stories. She said that her date night involved “brown sage butter chicken piccata with mushroom pasta” which is just like “heaven.”

It also includes having Yolanda Hadid, stepping in to care for their daughter for the night. Gigi posted, “Mom and Dad’s first date night. She’s in the other room with Oma, [Yolanda Hadid], but miss her [so much] lol.”

A few days after Gigi gave birth, Zayn updated fans and tweeted, “Our baby girl is here, healthy and beautiful. To try put into words how I am feeling right now would be an impossible task. The love I feel for this tiny human is beyond my understanding. Grateful to know her, proud to call her mine and thankful for the life we will have together.”

Gigi also posted and said that she is “so in love” with their growing family.

According to a previous report from E!, “Everything went smoothly and she is recovering at her penthouse.” They added that she’s surrounded by both of their families and “Gigi is on a high and can’t believe they created an angel. She’s truly so in love and has had many emotional moments while holding her baby girl.”

Supermodel Gigi Hadid and singer Zayn Malik announced the birth of their baby daughter in September and the celebrity couple have been keeping a low profile ever since as they spend precious time with their newborn.

Since the baby’s arrival, the proud parents have both shared a snapshot of their daughter’s hand. Gigi recently uploaded an adorable candid shot of her baby wearing an outfit from Donatella Versace. Nevertheless, fans are still waiting in anticipation for the couple to share the baby’s first full picture and reveal her name.

The big question is, will Gigi Hadid share a full photo of her baby daughter? Both Gigi and Zayn are infamously private about their relationship and while they might be waiting for the right time to share the first photo of their baby, they could well decide that they want to keep her out of the spotlight.

E! reported that the supermodel plans to raise her child away from the public eye which could mean that the couple may decide to shield the baby’s face from any photos they do share online.

Resident to Jamus Lim, “We just want to be heard”

Singapore—Like other Members of Parliament, the Workers’ Party’s (WP) Jamus Lim has been making the rounds doing house visits and sharing stories about the residents he has met in the process.

The comment of one woman, a ‘Miss Vicky,’ resonated with him more than usual, when she said, “We just want to be heard.”

Mr Lim is part of the WP team that won in Sengkang GRC in July’s General Election, and represents the residents of Anchorvale. The MP, who is an associate professor of economics, shared in a Facebook post on Saturday (Oct 10), that Miss Vicky talked to him about “her concerns for the future of Singapore.”

“We touched on a number of topics, including why residents seek help from MPs, to the greater open-mindedness of the younger generation to change, to changes she would like to see in the estate. But the bottom line, in her words, was that ‘We just want to be heard,’” wrote Mr Lim.

He added that her words stuck with him for the remainder of the evening, even when he talked with another family, the Lims, who feel the same way as Miss Vicky does, “(albeit this conversation was in Mandarin and my fraying Hokkien), that they wished that the people had a greater voice.”

The MP posted a photo of a gift from Mr Lim, a decades-long Green Spot factory worker, adding that despite being advanced in age, he “still felt compelled to work in his sunset years, so as not to be a burden on his children.”

Responding to what he heard from Miss Vicky and the Lim family, the WP MP pledged, “We will continue to work hard to be a voice for the people.”

Netizens commenting on Mr Lim’s post echoed the sentiments of the residents.

One wrote, “People want to be heard….MP job is to speak for the people.”

Others thanked him for ‘listening.’

More than one netizen expressed that they were jealous of Sengkang residents for the MPs that they have.

One netizen even listed what he called “pressing concerns” of netizens.

Sonia Sui and Alyssa Chia’s children go to a kindergarten that costs SGD34k a year

0

Most parents, if not all parents always want the best for their children and that includes going the extra mile to get them enrolled in prestigious schools.

A source recently told media outlet Apple Daily about an international kindergarten in Taipei’s Tianmu neighbourhood where it was allegedly attended by children of celebrities like Alyssa Chia, Sonia Sui and Ruby Lin. Reporters headed to the kindergarten to investigate and sure enough they spotted Alyssa’s husband Xiu Jie Kai together with fellow Taiwanese actor Gabriel Lan patiently waiting outside the gate for their kids to finish class.

Soon after, Sonia’s husband Tony Hsieh left the school with their eldest son, five-year-old Max. Tony was spotted greeting Jie Kai but because he was sporting a mask, Jie Kai seemed confused at first. He quickly nodded back when he recognised who it was. Reporters also saw Alyssa’s car circling the school as there were no available parking spots. Eventually, she had to stop at the side of the road to let Jie Kai off to pick up their daughters, five-year-old ‘Bubu’ and three-year-old ‘Bobo’.

For those who want to prepare their children for studying abroad in the future, European schools like this are one of the the top choices. Apple Daily reported that tuition fees can cost around NT$720,000 (S$34,000) a year. That doesn’t even include things like meals, extracurricular classes etc. Based on the crowd, the extravagant tuition fees have not stopped parents from enrolling their children although it is not surprising if they have deep pockets.

The report states that long before school ended for the day at 3pm, there were already rows of “imported” (read: expensive) vehicles parked outside.

Fellow celebrities Ruby and her husband Wallace Huo were not spotted on the same day as the other celebrities but it is believed that their daughter, three-year-old ‘Little Dolpin’ also goes to the same school.

Ekin Cheng called his wife Yoyo Mung fat

0

When you have been together with your partner for a while, there may be some things you can say that would not get you in trouble. On October 4, former TVB actress Yoyo Mung updated her social media account with a conversation she had with her husband, Hong Kong singer-actor Ekin Cheng while having a meal to celebrate his 53rd birthday and it is a surprise that Cheng is still in her good books.

Ekin Cheng called Yoyo Mung fat and got away with it. Picture: Instagram

In Mung’s post which had a snap of a bowl of wonton noodle soup, the 47-year-old shared that during breakfast she was thinking of whether to eat toast with butter and condensed milk too. Mung was worried about getting fat so she asked Cheng, “What if I become a fei po (fat woman) in the future…”

Just before Mung could finish her sentence her husband quipped, “It’s not the future. It’s already like that.” Luckily for Cheng, Mung did not get angry at him and she let him off the hook saying that it was because it was his birthday. “You’re amazing,” she wrote in her post. “You can talk like this for one day a year. Happy birthday.” Would she have done something to Cheng if he had said it at another time?

This funny anecdote charmed netizens and they gushed about how Cheng and Mung are like an old married couple. The couple got married in January 2013 and they usually keep a low profile when it comes to their relationship so this story is a rare treat for fans. Previously Mung was scrutinised by the media and netizens for looking ‘bloated’ during an outing with Cheng and some friends. They speculated that it could be the easy-going lifestyle Mung has been enjoying, after leaving TVB the year she got hitched, she had only taken on a couple of drama roles.

As for Cheng, his workload has also lessened over the years. However, there is no need for concern when it comes to their financial situation.

Thanks to Cheng’s real estate investments, he is estimated to have a net worth of over HK$160mil (S$28.1mil), with properties all over Hong Kong that have doubled or even tripled in value over the years. Their own house in the upscale Repulse Bay area, which they bought in 2007 for HK$28mil (S$4.9mil), is now said to be worth HK$65mil (S$11.4mil).

It is no surprise then that the couple can enjoy overseas vacations and casually decide to build a three-storey holiday villa in the idyllic countryside.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West put breakup rumours to rest with happy holiday snaps

The relationship between Kim Kardashian and Kanye West seems to be going from strength to strength lately following rumours over the summer suggesting that the pair may be heading for a breakup.

In the past few weeks, the couple have been enjoying a number of sweet date nights with Kim sharing some adorable photos of the rapper and their kids, North, 7, Saint, 4, Chicago, 2 and 15-month-old Psalm – with her millions of followers.

The newest show of Kimye solidarity comes in the form of holiday snaps from a family trip to the Dominican Republic. The reality star uploaded two photos to her Instagram account last night including one of her posing at the dinner table as camera shy son Saint hides behind her. The next shot showed a smiling Kanye sitting next to daughter North. “Dinner Dates in the DR ?,” Kim captioned the cute pictures.

The Dominican Republic seems to be one of the family’s top holiday destinations with the couple visiting back in August so that they could reportedly ‘focus on their marriage’ amid Kanye’s bid for presidency.

“They had a good family week in the Dominican Republic. They are continuing the family vacation in Colorado,” a source told People at the time. “Kim and Kanye are getting along. They both seem much happier.”

Another Kardashian insider added that the rapper is “really enjoying his family time right now,” adding, “honestly he’s in a great place and feeling creatively inspired.”

Reality star Kim Kardashian spoke to GRAZIA about caring for her husband Kanye West when he contracted COVID-19. Kim revealed that she had no help at that time and that “changing his sheets with gloves and a face shield was a really scary time.”

According to Kim, “Kanye had it way at the beginning when nobody really knew what was going on. It was so scary and unknown.” The couple were alone in their home with four kids without anyone else to help out. Kim had to take care of Kanye singlehandedly.

“I had to go and change his sheets and help him get out of bed when he wasn’t feeling good,” she said. “It was a challenge because it was so unknown…Changing his sheets with gloves and a face shield was really a scary time.”

The rapper has since recovered from the virus and the couple are working on their relationship. Back in August, a source told People that “Kim still seems focused on making her marriage work. She is pretty quiet about her exact plans for the future, but for now, she seems okay with Kanye living in Wyoming. He is moving ahead with the presidential campaign. This is a decision that no one can change his mind about.”

Brad Pitt accused of promising to marry woman, running off with money

0

Los Angeles — Actor Brad Pitt is currently involved in a controversy over his alleged proposal to a woman before running off with an amount in a catfishing scam.

Pitt has denied contacting healthcare chief executive Kelli Christina, who is suing him for allegedly “promising to marry her”, and says he does not know her.

Christina is said to be suing Pitt for US$100,000 (S$135,000) after claiming that the actor contacted her about helping him raise funds for his Make It Right Foundation, which aimed to help rebuild 150 homes in the Lower 9th ward of New Orleans.

Pitt’s lawyers counter that the woman has fallen for an online scam.

The actor, who is going through divorce proceedings with former wife Angelina Jolie,  rejected the claims, saying he never communicated with Christina and stated that he never asked her for any payments.

With tension escalating, Pitt and Jolie are “no longer in family therapy” ahead of the trial to determine custody of their children. The former couple is at odds over how much time each gets with their six children. Known as Brangelina, the duo broke up in September 2016.

Jolie, 45, filed for divorce and sought custody of their brood after an alleged altercation between Pitt and son Maddox on board a private jet. Pitt, 56, is seeking joint legal and physical custody.

At the end of last month, Pitt brought rumoured girlfriend German model Nicole Poturalski, 27, to Chateau Miraval in the south of France. The holiday coincided with what would have been Pitt and Jolie’s sixth wedding anniversary. The former couple married at the chateau on Aug 24, 2014.

According to UsWeekly, the former couple’s relationship has turned so sour to the point that they stopped family therapy ahead of a custody trial slated for next month. “Tensions have escalated between Brad and Angelina, with family therapy no longer taking place,” an insider exclusively told the celebrity and entertainment magazine. The former couple had earlier appeared to reach a cordial understanding of co-parenting their children. Pitt was seen leaving his LA home in June after spending time with the children. /TISG

Donnie Yen mourns father-in-law, who dies after 2-year battle with cancer

Hong Kong — Martial arts star Donnie Yen, who was close to his father-in-law, has been in mourning after the latter passed away on Sept 20 following a two-year battle with cancer.

Daniel Wang, who was a jeweller, was called a “fighter” by the actor.

Wang, 68, was surrounded by his loved ones when he passed away. The funeral was held on Wednesday (Oct 7) at Hong Kong’s St John’s Cathedral. It was attended by family and friends. Wreaths from Yen’s fellow celebrity friends such as William So, Simon Yam, Richie Ren, Miriam Yeung and director Wong Jing were spotted in the funeral hall.

Yen’s wife Cissy Wang and sister-in-law Irene were emotional as they greeted the media. Yen told reporters: “This has been a sombre moment for our family and it is difficult for us to calm down. Everyone knows our family is united and harmonious. My father-in-law had fought this battle for two years. He is a fighter. This illness took him away from us, so today, we will remember the happiness he has given us. Thank you all for your concern.”
