2024 U.S. presidential elections, the most crucial ever

0

Every term, you hear the same thing almost. This election will be the most impactful, pivotal (inject adjective of choice) ever, but this time around, it really will change the course of the United States in many ways, depending on who gets elected.

Co-founder of Third Way, a national think-tank that champions center-left ideas, Matt Bennett believes that this cycle, who is elected, will leave the nation either in danger or not. The closest time an election was pivotal was during the Civil War, 1865.

In a podcast titled The New Abnormal with Danielle Moodie, “I believe that if this election goes wrong – that if we return Donald Trump to power – we are going to live in a country that will become unrecognisable to us in very short order,” he said.

Presidential elections

He also spoke about the 1968 elections when Americans elected Nixon to power, saying that although Nixon was a bad president and a bad person, he does not hold a candle to Donald Trump in that respect because Donald Trump is much worse.

“I think a second Trump administration would make the Nixon administration look like he was Abraham Lincoln,” he said.

Bennett says the difference is that Trump now knows how “the levers of power work in the White House” and that he will appoint sycophants around him who will carry out his orders and fail to hold him accountable.

“I think most importantly, the sole emphasis that he places on having loyal lickspittle toadies around him, rather than people like General Mattis – that would be the true catastrophe,” he says.

According to the latest study by Pew Research Center, the state of the nation’s politics finds no single focal point for the public’s dissatisfaction. There is widespread criticism of the three branches of government, both political parties and political leaders and candidates for office.

Conservatives agree with 9 governors wanting to preserve women’s sports by not allowing “men” to enter

0

The controversial topic of trans women entering female sports is at an all-time high. This began when Riley Gaines started a campaign to preserve women’s sports after she tied with Lia Thomas. However, this has received mixed reviews from both liberals and conservatives, as some agree that trans women should compete with biological women, but others do not.

According to the National Review, Nine Republican governors are urging the NCAA to revise its policies and prohibit male athletes from participating in women’s sports, asserting that such policies are misguided and unfair. They argue that allowing men to compete against women unjustly takes recognition away from exceptional female athletes.

Furthermore, the letter cites scientific evidence supporting biological differences between males and females in athletic performance. The governors contend that federal inaction necessitates state-level defence of women’s sports fairness. They reference specific cases, like Riley Gaines and Lia Thomas, as examples of the consequences of these policies.

Conservatives agree with nine governors wanting to preserve women’s sports

Out of the 50 governors, it appears only 9 support this idea. However, X users state that this is to preserve the rights of women who want to enter sports. They need to receive protection as their transgender counterparts may have a stronger build than them. The current rules for a trans participant are very loose.

In addition to this, others state that all the governors should support this idea as it is a matter of human rights. They question what kind of country they are living in that does not want to protect the rights of women who’d want to play in sports. Furthermore, there seems to be a lack of argument from the woke side.

Feminists like Riley Gaines are gaining momentum as this is being discussed. Feminist organisations are stating that she is defending the rights of women as she believes that non-binary and trans individuals should not enter into women’s sports. There are some who suggest that the trans individuals have their own sports categories as it might be a more even playing field for them.

Donald Trump snaps at judge, says “leave my children alone”

0

Donald Trump spent the early morning hours on his blog Truth Social dissing the judge in his trial despite a gag order not to say anything. He ranted about Judge Arthur Engoron, saying, “leave my children alone.”

In the wee hours of the morning, at 2.28 am to be precise, he wrote on Truth Social, “This Rigged Trial, brought by the Racist New York State A.G Letitia James before Trump and developer Hating Judge, Arthur Engoron, which should have never been brought in that the so-called STAR WITNESS, SleazeBag Lawyer (for many people) Michael Cohen, admitted last week on the stand that he LIED.

“This Fake Case should be dismissed… there is no Victim (except me). Leave my children alone, Engoron. You are a disgrace to the legal profession!”

Trump’s other child, Eric, will take the stand tomorrow, while Ivanka will testify next week.

Trump’s demands for loyalty starting to backfire

Trump seems to expect everyone to be loyal to him but his demands are never reciprocal. According to Rolling Stone magazine, former Trump confidants in Fulton Country Georgia, federal criminal problems and legal advisers all say that Trump’s willingness to throw them under the bus has made them very focused on self-preservation.

Trump seems to be looking for fall guys who would take the blame for him and go to jail just to protect him.

One former Trump administration official said in an interview with special counsel Jack Smith’s office. “If I went to jail for Donald Trump, if I did that, what would that do for me and my family? I don’t think he would even give us a lifetime Mar-a-Lago memberships if I did that for him.”

Trump’s former attorney Jenna Ellis posted on X in August that she was “reliably informed that Trump isn’t funding any of us who are indicted. Why isn’t [the pro-Trump Super Pac] MAGA, Inc. funding everyone’s defense?”.

Employer asks how much maid’s medical checkups usually cost

SINGAPORE: An employer of a domestic helper took to social media asking others how much they usually paid for their domestic helper’s medical bills.

According to the Manpower Ministry (MOM), during a migrant domestic worker’s (MDW) employment, employers must send her for a medical screening every 6 months. This medical examination screens for pregnancy and infectious diseases such as syphilis, HIV and tuberculosis. The 6ME test results must be certified by a Singapore-registered doctor. Employers must pay for the 6ME and any medical expenses arising from it. All 6ME results must be submitted to MOM. This is regardless of the tests helpers need to take.

All results must be submitted by clinics. Employers or their representatives should not be present during the examination, the MOM added. If their helper did not pass her 6ME, employers must cancel her Work Permit and send her home immediately. Employers must also send their migrant domestic worker (MDW) for a medical examination before they can get their Work Permit issued. They must send their helper for a medical examination by a Singapore-registered doctor within 2 weeks of her arrival in Singapore. They can only get her Work Permit issued if she passes the medical examination. Otherwise, she will have to be sent home.

Responding to the employer’s post, domestic helpers responded, stating varying amounts between $30 to $90. One said: “I return the change every time I go for medical check up 38$ to 45$ not the same that why my boss give me $50”. Another helper said: “Now need X-ray so almost $90. Depends on the clinic, my employer paid”. Another netizen commented: “$25 IIRC. Don’t go to clinics in the malls or atas areas. They have to cover their atas rentals. My helper says previous employer paid much more…. in Bukit Timah area. My place HDB doctor”.

Last month, an employer took to social media asking for advice after discovering that her new helper was ill. In an anonymous post to a support group for domestic helpers and employers alike, the woman said that her 30-year-old helper had only been working for her for a week, and she was a direct hire. The woman added that her maid was good and a fast learner but said that she noticed the helper was quiet and very slow when she walked. Sometimes, when she spoke to her helper, the employer said that there was no response from the maid, which she just brushed off, thinking that the helper was homesick.

“but to my horror today when I brought her for her medical she had very low BP and also the doctor suspected her of being anaemic”, the woman wrote. When the doctor tried to draw blood from the maid, he had some difficulties and asked her employer to send the helper for more tests to check if her helper was Anaemic. Her employer was worried because her helper was a strict vegetarian and “she refuse(d) to eat”. The woman also said that she was “not rich just middle class employer I can’t afford her medical bill if she dt eat and faint what am gonna do?”

Employer asks what’s the best age range for helper caring for newborns

0

SINGAPORE: An employer took to social media asking others for what they thought was the best age range for a helper taking care of newborns. In an anonymous post to a support group on social media for employers and domestic helpers alike, the woman asked other netizens for their thoughts on the matter.

Netizens who commented urged her to look at a helper’s skills instead of age. One said: “I once hired a helper in her 30s, mother of 2 children herself but had no clue on childcare. I dont think u hire based on age. Some young, unmarried helpers r better at childcare cos they r cargivers to several younger siblings while some r mothers themselves who’s kids were raised by their in laws or parents so they dont really know the nuances and safety issues in caring for infants”.

Another said: “If I am an employer, I wouldn’t go with the age but I will check her experience from previous employers.. and I will not depend on having experience with own children.. I believe the way they take care of their own may differ to the way you wanted to care for your child. I myself have no kids but I have many experience with kids from different employer, very unfortunate that my current they actually learn the way on how to handle even a baby from me.”

Another employer commented: “Age is a factor but more impt is temperament and willingness to look after baby. My current helper is married with 1 kid but totally clueless and worse, seems autistic and cold towards us and the babies. She has no eye contact with us or kids, just grabs the kid’s leg to wash, without any eye contact or verbal response. When the kid is walking and falls off, she is emotionless and stands like a wooden kayu. I think she didn’t look after her child and it was looked after by the granny. My previous maids were not so wooden although 2 of them were single ( had positive interaction with kids)”.

Earlier this year, an employer at her wits end with her maid took to social media asking for advice and feedback. In an anonymous post to a support group on social media, the employer wrote that her helper had been with the family for just over three months and “despite multiple reminders, she continues to use her phone while taking care of my newborn baby during work hours”.

She said that the maid liked to watch videos while feeding or playing with the baby, and this would result in her sometimes forgetting to burp the baby. “My baby once vomitted everything after her feeding because she didnt burp. When she first joined, we didn’t have this problem but seems like she really can’t control herself now”, the woman wrote.

She added that she did not want to go through the hassle of finding and hiring another helper but had exhausted all other options. “Any advice and feedback will be helpful pls. And is it even possible to find a helper without phone issues? Thanks in advance!” she wrote. /TISG

Survey: Singaporeans Are More Stressed Than Global Average

SINGAPORE: A recent survey conducted by Cigna Healthcare, an international healthcare company, has revealed alarming trends in the stress levels of the Singaporean population.

The study, which included more than 10,000 respondents across 12 markets, reported that stress levels in Singapore have steadily risen since 2021, with nearly 90% of the local population experiencing stress. This figure is seven percentage points higher than the global average, signalling a growing mental health concern in the city-state.

The survey, conducted between May and June 2023, included 1,000 Singapore respondents, offering an in-depth perspective on the mental well-being of Singaporeans.

The findings show that 71 per cent of the local respondents reported feeling stressed but believed they could cope with it, while 16 per cent expressed high-stress levels without the ability to manage it effectively. The remaining 13 per cent stated that they did not feel stressed at all.

Of particular concern is the significant stress experienced by Singapore’s youth. The survey revealed that young people aged 18 to 24 accounted for the largest proportion of respondents experiencing stress, highlighting the vulnerability of this demographic group.

The cost of living, including housing, groceries, and utilities, was the leading source of stress for respondents, reflecting the challenges of maintaining a decent standard of living in Singapore’s high-cost environment.

Economic uncertainty, job security, and concerns about the future also weighed heavily on the minds of many Singaporeans, amplifying their stress levels. Others said that personal financial difficulties and debt burdens contributed significantly to their overall stress levels.

The survey revealed a stark contrast in energy levels among the local population, as well. Only 10 per cent of Singaporeans considered themselves energetic, a figure that is half as low as the global average. This suggests that many residents are grappling with a lack of vitality and overall well-being.

Cigna Healthcare’s survey underscores the need for increased attention to mental health issues and the development of comprehensive strategies to address the growing stress levels among Singaporeans. As stress continues to mount, it is crucial for both individuals and policymakers to take steps to reduce these pressures, offering support and resources to maintain a balanced and healthy quality of life.

Singapore tops list of world’s richest countries

SINGAPORE: Singapore has clinched the coveted title of the world’s richest country, according to an index published by financial website Insider Monkey. The rankings use per capita gross domestic product (GDP) figures to measure the prosperity levels of nations worldwide.

With a per capita GDP of S$215,512, Singapore comfortably secured the top spot in this ranking, outstripping all other nations.

Singapore’s economic dominance is highlighted by a significant margin separating it from its closest competitors. Luxembourg claimed the second position with a per capita GDP of S$195,142.

Meanwhile, Qatar took the third spot with a per capita GDP of S$170,963. The fourth to tenth positions in the ranking were occupied by Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Norway, the United States, San Marino, and Brunei, respectively.

While these nations boasted impressive economic statistics, Singapore’s lead in per capita GDP made it the standout champion. The rankings underline Singapore’s remarkable economic might and exceptional financial standing in the global landscape.

Insider Monkey’s report noted several key factors contributing to Singapore’s remarkable economic performance. First, it emphasized Singapore’s unique status as both a city and a country, a rarity in the global context.

Singapore’s strategic location in Southeast Asia has made it a vital transportation hub for a wide range of goods, including consumer electronics and commodities. This positioning has facilitated extensive trade and economic growth, firmly establishing Singapore as a regional economic powerhouse.

Another noteworthy aspect of Singapore’s economic landscape highlighted in the report is its reputation for having one of the largest populations of millionaires in the world. This affluence is underpinned by the nation’s low corruption rate, further cementing its status as an attractive destination for businesses and investors.

Bold Strategy vs. fentanyl crisis

0

In the face of an alarming surge in overdose deaths, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) unveiled a bold strategy aimed at crippling the production of fentanyl and synthetic drugs by targeting their precursor materials.

This collaborative effort, spanning a host of federal agencies, will play a pivotal role in battling the relentless wave of the deadliest overdose crisis in U.S. history.

The fentanyl crisis

Under this ambitious plan, CBP will join forces with postal services, express consignment carriers, air carriers, and logistical companies to share critical information about suspicious goods, potential transit routes, and other data that can dismantle the supply chain of illicit synthetic drugs, particularly fentanyl. The targets include seemingly innocent legal items such as molds, presses for pill production, and essential chemicals.

Evolution of a drug trade

A disconcerting trend sees these legal goods increasingly infiltrating the United States via air cargo from Asia, landing at major airports, such as Los Angeles. Subsequently, they find their way into Mexico, where drug cartels manufacture fentanyl before smuggling it back into the United States for illegal distribution. CBP’s strategy hinges on disrupting every link in this supply chain through data-driven intelligence, marking a significant step forward in combating the overdose crisis.

Troy Miller, the acting commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, stood alongside U.S. Coast Guard officials and San Diego County sheriff’s deputies. He pointed out that nearly half of the agency’s fentanyl seizures occur in the San Diego sector.

The drug trade has evolved significantly since 2016 when fentanyl primarily entered the U.S. via mail, hidden in envelopes. Today, it arrives via ships and planes, bearing machinery, dyes, and other materials essential for fentanyl production, setting the stage for the ongoing overdose crisis.

This bold strategy to tackle the fentanyl crisis represents the latest endeavor by the Biden administration to combat the drug crisis. Earlier, the government announced indictments and sanctions against Chinese companies and executives, holding them responsible for importing chemicals used in the production of synthetic opioids like fentanyl.

The toll is staggering, with more than 100,000 deaths linked to drug overdoses annually since 2020, and approximately two-thirds of these fatalities are attributed to fentanyl. The unveiling of this comprehensive strategy offers a ray of hope in a dark, ongoing battle against the devastating impact of this deadly synthetic drug.
