A delivery rider was sent flying across a traffic junction by an oncoming vehicle that did not stop for a red light.  The accident happened along Bukit Batok East Avenue.

The Facebook page ROADS.sg posted a video of the incident, which happened on Mar 3 at about 9:15am at the junction of Bukit Batok East Avenue 2 and Bukit Batok East Avenue 5.

More than 500 comments have been made by the online community , urging that the driver be permanently suspended from driving.

“Really not fit to drive,” said one netizen. Another commented that the driver should pay for all the medical expenses and loss of income of the delivery rider.

“Traffic police of LTA (Land Transport Authority) must take serious punishment for this reckless driver,” said a Facebook user.

Others commented that it is best practice for all road users to stop for a few more seconds at a crossing  – just to be sure.

Netizens said, “Traffic lights and signs are all there to keep us safe, but you still need to look out for yourself” and “That few seconds of wait might save them from reckless road users.”

“Nowadays, I don’t trust other vehicles (to stop) even if the lights are in my favour. I rather trust my eyes and keep looking out. Too many kuku around,” another Facebook user added.

The Road Traffic Act states that a person who drives a motorised vehicle recklessly on the road will be guilty of an offence.

If it causes grievous hurt, the offender can be jailed for up to five years and  fined up to S$10,000. The punishment for repeat offenders is doubled./TISG
