The internet is now a ubiquitous part of everyday life, and even an hour without it can make people feel on edge. What’s worse than having no internet is having a slow, intermittent connection. One moment the page is loading and just when the image is about to show up, the connection gets cut. That is enough to put anyone in a foul mood.

Given the value of a fast internet connection, hotels around the world now offer free internet alongside basic utilities and amenities. But how many of these hotels actually deliver on their promise of good, free Wi-Fi connection?

A study conducted by researchers on HighSpeedInternet.com reported the top US hotel chains that offered the fastest available free Wi-Fi.

The study gathered data from the top 20 US hotels based on its number of locations across the country and compared it with data determining each hotel’s average internet speed using the website HotelWiFiTest.com.

Interestingly enough, economy hotel chains topped the list of fastest free Wi-Fi connections. The US hotel chains with the fastest average free Wi-Fi include the following:

  1. Rodeway Inn (7.66 mbps)
  2. Americas Best Value Inn (5.91 mbps)
  3. Quality Inn & Suites (5.91 mbps)
  4. Super 8 (4.87 mbps)
  5. Days Inn (4.79 mbps)

In contrast, some mid-scale hotels do not provide a fast and reliable free Wi-Fi connection. US hotels with the slowest average free Wi-Fi are the following:

  1. Hampton Inn & Suites (1.90 mbps)
  2. Hilton Garden Inn (1.90 mbps)
  3. Hilton Hotels (2.42 mbps)
  4. Fairfield Inn & Suits by Marriott (2.46 mbps)
  5. Courtyard by Marriott (2.50 mbps)

Econo Lodge, an economy motel chain, offers the fastest paid Wi-Fi followed by Fairfield Inn & Suites, a low-cost economy hotel chain owned by Marriott. If you’re willing to pay for faster hotel Wi-Fi, the following hotel chains offer the fastest paid Wi-Fi connections.

  1. Econo Lodge (8.48 mbps)
  2. Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott (8.34 mbps)
  3. Holiday Inn (8.10 mbps)
  4. Holiday Inn Express (8.00 mbps)
  5. Hilton Hotels (7.73 mbps)

The study added that the recommended Wi-Fi speed for making video calls is at 0.5 to 1.5 mbps while streaming video on YouTube or Netflix takes about 1.25 to 25 mbps on average.
