“There is seriously something wrong with Singapore,” said Facebook user Roy Phang, telling how he felt distraught that an old man did not have enough to eat.
He had to have late lunch two days ago (16 Feb), and decided to buy ‘mixed rice’. While he was waiting in line to buy the food, he noticed an old man, “at least 70+ years od, standing behind him.
The old man was working as a security guard, but he “could not even stand up straight,” said Roy. What was even more shocking was, the the dishes the old man ordered at the food stall.
“I saw him ordering just plain rice, one egg and one vegetable,” recounted Roy.
When Roy asked the old man if he was going home, the man said that he was going to work the 2nd shift. It was a 12-hour shift.
Moved by the frailty of the man, Roy asked the hawker to add more meat to his dish to make it a fuller meal for the old man. “That’s the least I could do,” said Roy. When the hawker said that the packet of food cost $6.00, the security guard was surprised. “Huh! So expensive?!” he remarked.
Roy wondered though, “why Singapore, being a so called ‘developed country’, do not care or do enough for the Pioneers?”
“Don’t tell me they are working for fun. They can’t even afford a proper meal,” Roy said.
In recounting how the old man has to choose his food carefully to make sure that it does not exceed $2, Roy remarked that “if he can’t even afford a $5-6 meal at his age, then our Government is definitely not doing enough.”
“What kind of retirement is this?” Roy asked.
