Goh Chok Tong to undergo radiation therapy

Singapore—Health-wise, it’s been a challenging time for former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, who has had to undergo not one but two procedures in the past few weeks.

The 79-year-old Mr Goh took to Facebook late on Wednesday evening (Dec 16) to write that after his recent trips to the hospital to remove a kidney stone and to biopsy a suspicious nodule in his larynx, he now has to undergo 20 sessions of radiation therapy over the next four weeks to ensure that no cancer cells remain in his body.

Mr Goh explained that squamous cells had been found in the nodule in his larynx, but, “Fortunately, after excision, the MRI of the neck and the CT scan of the chest showed no trace of these bad cells.”

Despite this, however, he still needs radiation therapy.

“Just like the weather these days, it never rains but pours for me medically….

What a way to celebrate the festive season!”

The former Prime Minister, who stepped down from public duties before the General Election in July, said that he has shared his “medical episodes” for a purpose, to encourage every person to have their regular or yearly health screenings.

And while he wrote that he does not have a subsidised programme for screening for potential illnesses, the Ministry of Health does have a subsidised Screen for Life programme for all Singaporeans.

Mr Goh underlined the importance of early detection and treatment, especially in cases similar to his, as this would exponentially enhance a person’s chances of survival.

“For those who may experience a lump in the throat and a change in the voice, see an ENT doctor. Ignorance, delay and denial may be costly. Spot and treat the cancer early, the 5-year survival rate is over 90 percent. Do it after it has spread, the survival rate drops to below 30 percent.”

And in the meantime, Mr Goh seemed in good spirits and expressed the hopes of a good prognosis before long.

“My thundery showers will pass. I am looking forward to clear blue sky before the Chinese New Year — and more good years thereafter.

Season’s Greetings and good health to all. — gct”

Friends and supporters flooded Mr Goh’s post with good wishes for a speedy recovery and a complete return to health.

Others thanked him for being so open about his health issues as this is beneficial to others.

Korean couple fined for visiting Rain’s home and demanding money

0

According to reports, an elderly couple in their seventies were fined after visiting singer Rain’s home and demanding that Rain pay back money that his father owed the couple from over two decades ago. Based on sources from legal circles, on December 16, Yoo Chang Hoo, the senior judge at the Seoul Western District Court fined a man (age 79) and his wife (age 73) with 700,000 KRW (SGD850) each.

According to the elderly couple, Rain’s father who is only known by his surname Mr Jung had bought rice on credit at their rice shop in Yongsan district, Seoul, more than two decades ago but never paid back the money that was owed. The couple then dropped by Rain’s home where his family stays along with his parents but Rain’s father did not want to meet the couple.

Rain’s father was accused of not returning money to an elderly couple. Picture: Instagram

So they yelled out, “Pay back the money for the rice,” and hit the front gate several times, breaking the door lock that was worth 200,000 KRW (SGD243), and forced the door open without permission. They then trespassed into Rain’s house to the front lawn.

In 2018, the elderly couple posted a message on an online community claiming that Rain’s parents owed them money. They alleged that Rain’s parents used to own a rice cake shop and had borrowed 25 million KRW (SGD30,000) worth of rice from them. They added that Rain’s parents promised to pay them back but did not.

Last September, the elderly man filed a civil suit against Mr Jung for 50 million (SGD60,000) but lost the case in January this year. Rain then filed an injunction against the man in February this year and the court cited it in April.

The court stated, “The victim has suffered considerable mental pain, but he does not want to punish the perpetrator.”

Born June 25 1982, Jung Ji-hoon, better known by his stage name Rain is a South Korean singer-songwriter, actor, and music producer.

Rain’s musical career includes seven albums (six Korean, one Japanese), 28 singles and numerous concert tours around the world. He achieved breakthrough success with his third Korean album, It’s Raining (2004), which spawned the number one single of the same name. The album sold a million copies in Asia, and established Rain as an international star.

Underground parties allegedly held at Golden Mile Complex since June

Singapore — While the rest of the country is still looking forward to being able to gather in groups of eight when Singapore enters Phase 3 of reopening on Dec 28, some people have allegedly been partying away for the past six months at Golden Mile Complex.

In the latest of these parties, which was held on Monday (Dec 14), around 30 people reportedly met in a small bar on the second floor of the complex, according to Shin Min Daily News.

The party was said to have been held by a 50-year-old woman for the birthday of her boyfriend and people were invited by word of mouth.

Those who attended the party did not have their temperature taken, no SafeEntry was implemented and they were allowed go around the bar without putting on face masks.

They were allowed to consume alcoholic drinks and mingle while “scantily-clad women” performed on a makeshift dance floor.

One person told the publication that certain establishments at the complex have allowed such illegal parties since June. This person was anonymously quoted as saying: “If you come on weekends, you’ll see the bars here filled with people completely ignoring the pandemic. When the authorities show up, the operators will just pull down the shutters and continue operating illegally afterwards.”

The birthday celebration was by no means the only event at the complex that evening. At least eight bars were operating on the night of Dec 14, said Shin Min.

The president of the Singapore Nightlife Business Association (SNBA), Mr Joseph Ong, is quoted in The New Paper as saying the news that people were illegally holding parties at the complex had reached him but that he had originally thought these were isolated incidents.

“I did not know they were so blatant at Golden Mile. It seems like the place has become something of a hive,” he said.

Mr Ong added: “It took us so long to get to Phase 3, with all the nightlife businesses pulling together. It would be such a waste if this small group of operators destroys the hard work done by the 2,000-plus nightlife outlets for almost a year.”

Should clusters of infection develop because of the illegal parties at the complex, it would be hard to carry out contact tracing, he said. “Operating in an illegal, underground manner is definitely not right and it is risky for the public.”

In August, two men who had been hired to do renovation work at Golden Mile Tower were caught gathering and inviting others to socialise there despite the pandemic. On Aug 28, six Singaporean men and four Thai women were fined thousands of dollars after they pleaded guilty to breaching Covid-19 regulations on safe distancing measures. /TISG

Faced with blackmail threats, influencer Xinde Yap publicly admits to affair

Singapore — Infuencer Xinde Yap, 25, has admitted to having had an affair after someone  threatened to blackmail him about it.

Meanwhile, his wife, Paix Wang, 28, whom he married earlier this year and with whom he has a seven-month-old daughter, has said that she is standing by her husband.

Yap, who is also known as one of the Dee Kosh Boys for appearing in the YouTuber’s videos, posted an IG story on Sunday (Dec 13), in which he said someone had found out about his affair and was threatening to blackmail him.

And rather than succumbing to the blackmailer, he was choosing instead to face the consequences of his behaviour.

He said he was posting “to own up to mistakes I have made as a husband and a father”.

Yap added: “While we wanted to settle this personal matter privately and as a family. I am cornered to speak about this publicly because there is someone who knows about this and is using my status as a public figure to try to extort from us $20k so that this wouldn’t be exposed online.”

He added that he was grateful that his wife was standing by him, adding that he would work on being a better person, husband and father.

Wang, who goes by @25___mn on Instagram, was open about how hurt she felt by her husband’s unfaithfulness.

She criticised the other woman’s behaviour and said that she stood firm in her choice to stay with her husband. “For the sake of my child and my family, I will be strong and stay with my husband in faith that he learns from his lessons. I will support him as his wife to protect this family and not allow them to be threatened into submission.”

Wang added that “monetary benefits were requested in exchange for keeping this affair out of the public eye”.

Yap, whose over 70,000 followers make him one of the biggest IG celebrities in Singapore, opened a bar in 2017 in Tanjong Pagar called Chug Chug, which became very popular.

And in a November 2019 Dee Kosh YouTube video called Guess Who’s Getting Married?, Yap announced that he was getting married to Wang. The video featured his proposal to Wang, who was already pregnant at the time. /TISG

My sentence is “unfair”, says Singaporean drug offender facing firing squad in China

A Singaporean convicted of drug trafficking and facing imminent execution by shooting in China, wrote to her daughter last month calling her sentence “unfair”.

Siti Aslinda Junaidi, 35, was arrested in Shenzhen, China, six years ago for drug trafficking. She had been accompanying her boyfriend who was caught carrying the drugs.

In a letter to her 17-year-old daughter Ismiraldha last month, Aslinda told her daughter that her sentence was “unfair”, Malaysian media website Malaysia Now wrote.

“I must fight for my right no matter how. I know it’s difficult for you to accept this and I got to do something for this,” wrote Aslinda.

She also added in the letter that the Singapore consul had not visited her for the last 15 months.

“I don’t know why. Quite worried here.”

But she advised her daughter not to think too much of her plight, adding that she should focus on her studies.

In the letter, she asked her daughter: “Elda, by the way, what’s your height and weight now? How’s your ITE life? Fun? Enjoy yourself alright”.

In the report by Malaysia Now, Ismiraldha said there had been a lack of documentation on her mother’s case.

“What I can say is that when this happened, I was just 12 years old. I’m not too sure. But I can assure you that all these years nothing has been done,” she added.

Aslinda is currently detained at the Shenzhen Detention Centre in the Guangdong province in south China.

Lawyer M. Ravi sought help from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Monday (Dec 14) regarding Aslinda’s case.

In an update on Facebook, Mr Ravi wrote that his team from Carson Law Chambers has made frantic efforts in China to get a Chinese lawyer to represent the Singaporean woman. /TISG

Lawyer M Ravi charged with criminal defamation of K Shanmugam

Singapore — Lawyer M Ravi was charged in court on Wednesday (Dec 16) with criminal defamation of Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam.

Ravi, 51, is accused of defaming Mr Shanmugam by alleging that the minister had claimed that he wields influence over and controls Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon.

The allegations were made in a Facebook post on Nov 6, with Ravi claiming that he had heard them from fellow lawyer Eugene Thuraisingam.

However, in a post on his own Facebook page the same day, Mr Thuraisingam, a prominent criminal defence lawyer who has represented several people accused of murder and secured the acquittal of a doctor accused of rape, called Ravi’s Facebook post “false and completely untrue”.

“I refer to Mr M Ravi’s Facebook post this morning where he alleged amongst other things that I told him that the Honourable Minister for Law and Home Affairs had made statements to me which cast aspersions on the independence of Singapore’s judiciary. This is false and completely untrue. Mr Shanmugam has never said anything like that to me. I have also never told Mr Ravi any such thing.”

“This is my letter to Mr Shanmugam making this clear,” he added, including photos of his letter.

The case was heard only briefly on Wednesday, with Ravi telling the judge that he had already made representations the previous week.

It will next go to a pre-trial conference in January.

In October, after successfully overturning a death sentence of drug trafficker Gobi Avedian, Ravi gave an interview where he insinuated that the AGC had acted in bad faith or maliciously. When he failed to apologise and retract the allegations, the AGC filed a disciplinary complaint to the Law Society of Singapore over Ravi’s possible professional misconduct. The outcome for the complaint is pending.

If convicted of criminal defamation, Ravi could be jailed for up to two years, fined or both. /TISG

Luke Hemsworth and wife Samantha celebrate 13th anniversary

0

Luke Hemsworth may not be as famous as his siblings and it is okay as he likes it this way. He is the older to Chris and Liam and he gave fans a rare peek at his low-key lifestyle on Wednesday as he celebrated his 13th anniversary with his wife Samantha.

The 40-year-old Westworld actor shared a collection of photos on Instagram, showing the couple attending fancy dress parties, relaxing at home and hitting the beach.

‘Thirteen long years!’ wrote Luke.

‘We’ve laughed, cried, yelled, loved, been scared, scared others and laughed more. Here’s to another 13 long years.’

‘May they always be filled with epicness… and great wigs,’ Luke concluded, referring to several photos of the couple posing in flamboyant wigs.

His wife also paid tribute to Luke on Wednesday by posting her own collection of family photos. The photos featured the pair posing with Australian animals, attending a party and cuddling up to their four children: daughters Holly, 11, Ella, 10, Harper Rose, eight, and son Alexandre, seven.

Luke Hemsworth and Samantha have a happy marriage. Picture: Instagram

‘Thirteen years married to this incredible human,’ she began her caption. ‘Let’s keep laughing, loving, saving wildlife and living our best lives #happyanniversary #love #bestperson,’ she added.

The couple lead a very private life, with Samantha avoiding the spotlight unless she is supporting her husband on the red carpet. Not much is known about how they met or where they got married in 2007. Based on their Instagram accounts, the Hemsworths live an outdoorsy lifestyle, spending days at the beach, hiking through rainforests and visiting wildlife sanctuaries.

They lived almost a decade in LA and have recently relocated to Byron Bay to be closer to Luke’s parents, Leonie and Craig, and his brothers, Liam and Chris.

“It’s a better quality of life, for sure,” Luke told Stellar magazine in April.

“We had to make a decision about the kids, because if we’d stayed in LA and Westworld went into season four, then we’d be locked in for another couple of years.”

He continued: “It’s best for the kids. Mum and dad can walk to the house, Chris is about a mile away, and I think Liam’s going to be there soon, too.

“The kids are outside in bare feet, they’re on the beach and not watching much TV at all any more.”

Social media influencer wins S$60,000 in damages in defamation suit

Singapore—Vaune Phan, a social media influencer and blogger, was awarded S$60,000 in damages on Tuesday morning (Dec 15) after winning her defamation suit in the State Courts.

The court determined that Mark Yeow had defamed Ms Phan on four occasions in 2019 in three Facebook posts and in one post on a WhatsApp chat group.

Mr Yeow is a chief mechanic at a motorcycle workshop and the operations director at another.

The straitstimes.com (ST) reports that Mr Yeow had insinuated that Ms Phan had not told the truth in proceedings at the Small Claims Tribunal (SCT) over Ms Phan’s dispute with Revology Bikes, another motorcycle shop.

Revology Bikes caused damage to her motorbike in reinstalling a camera to it, saying a “sizeable gap” had been left between the fairings and the body of the motorcycle, Ms Phan said on Dec 21, 2018, in her SCT claim.

She posted about her experience with Revology on Facebook on Dec 30 of that year. Mr Yeow commented on this post, accusing her of cyberbullying and calling her a number of names including “cheapskate”, “freeloader” and “poser.”

In the following month, he questioned her integrity in a Facebook post, as well as the claim she made concerning the damage Revology had allegedly done to her bike, tagging other motorcycle workshops as well as Ms Phan’s business partners and present and possible sponsors.

In March, the same month the SCT ordered Revology to pay Ms Phan S$4,630 in compensation, Mr Yeow sent a link to his Facebook post to a chat group on WhatsApp, where he also mentioned “cheating” and “karma.”

He was later asked by Ms Phan’s lawyers to take the post down, as well as his comments on her post.

However, Mr Yeow publicly commented again concerning Ms Phan on a post on the Samsung Facebook account, an advertisement with Ms Phan promoting a mobile phone.

Using another account, he told Samsung that it “should do some homework and fact-finding before hiring an influencer” and to look for others “who can show you what dirt biking means”.

The ad was taken down, and Ms Phan’s contact to endorse the phone was terminated.

District Judge Wong Peck ruled that Ms Phan’s reputation had been affected by Mr Yeow’s statement, rejecting Mr Yeow’s assertion that her popularity was already decreasing even before he made his comments.

On the contrary, the judge found that Ms Phan’s social media following and presence were extensive. She added that Mr Yeow’s comments were unjustified and disagreed that Ms Phan had caused Revology to lose business.

Judge Wong added, “As the SCT ruling stands and Revology has paid compensation to the plaintiff pursuant to such ruling, I disagree how such facts when made public can constitute cyberbullying.”

Mr Yeow has also been ordered to pay legal costs to Ms Phan and to take down the statements he made on social media, as well as to desist from making further demeaning comments about her.

However, Judge Wong said no to the social media influencer’s claim for $6,404 in damages for Ms Phan’s terminated contract with Samsung, as Ms Phan had not proven that it had been because of Mr Yeow’s comments.

Ms Phan thanked her lawyers and said that she did not file her lawsuit for personal gain. “After recovery of my full legal costs, I will donate the remainder of the damages… to charity,” she said in a statement to ST.

Mr Yeow plans on appealing against the court’s decision.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday afternoon, Dec 16, Ms Phan wrote,

“It can be terrifying to know that a person whom you never knew existed could be so relentless in his acts of malice towards you, attacking your work and personal life.
But finally on 15th Dec 2020, the State Court have ordered him to pay S$104,427.80 in damages and legal costs, and an Injunction for his past, present and future defamatory actions towards me. I hope he realises that there are other least expensive and foolish ways to get a girl’s attention….
As quoted by Mr Suresh Divyanathan, “This judgment sets an important precedent in showing that social media personalities who are wrongfully defamed online can recover substantial damages from the perpetrators. Netizens should take this as a timely warning that their behaviour online should be no less civilized than their behaviour in person because Singapore Courts will not tolerate internet defamation.”
Like I said, think twice before you slander someone because at the end of the day, you get served what you deserve.”
