Year Ender 2020: The top 10 things S’poreans queued for this year

Singapore – When asked what the favourite pastime or national hobby of Singaporeans is, one would often get the answer “queueing.” With that in mind, here are the top 10 things that Singaporeans queued for in 2020, ranging from Black Friday deals to Swedish meatballs.

1. Snaking queues at supermarkets when the Circuit Breaker was announced

Supermarkets in Singapore experienced an influx in shoppers before and after the Government announced tighter measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19, an initiative which would be called Circuit Breaker.

Even before Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong gave a scheduled speech on April 3 announcing more details on the lockdown, social media was abuzz with posts of members of the public waiting in line at various supermarkets.

Meanwhile, Mr Lee had urged everyone during his announcement to stay at home as much as possible and to only “go out to do essential things.”

2. More queuing at IKEA before the lockdown

As business establishments across Singapore began closing for the Circuit Breaker period, snaking queues were spotted at IKEA’s Alexandria outlet. As netizens criticised those who waited in line to enter the store, one member of the public got triggered and slammed the critics.

A social media post of an individual who joined the queues over that weekend highlighted a toxic response to those who worried a Covid-19 cluster would form because of the crowds. And while many questioned if those who lined up had an urgent reason to visit the store before it closed, others shared they had extra items to purchase such as tables and chairs for working from home.

3. Queues when McDonald’s and barbershops reopened

As various businesses began reopening towards the end of the Circuit Breaker, it appeared as if many were very excited for their fast-food favourite, McDonald’s. Numerous photos of people and vehicles queuing at McDonald’s outlets began circulating on social media.

Despite the fast-food giant’s request to “please don’t rush down” as they reopened on May 11, it was no surprise for many to see Singaporeans waiting in line for a meal. Queues were also spotted in various barbershops as they reopened on May 12.

4. Hundreds line up to buy food for Hari Raya

The holy month of Ramadan began on April 23 this year, and during the weekend when it ended, crowds were seen at Geylang Serai market, a favourite among Singaporeans for their Hari Raya shopping. In this particular instance, members of the public already expected the long lines. “Their love for the market made the wait and long queues worth it,” said a netizen. “Nowhere can anyone get this feeling except in Pasar Geylang Serai,” said another.

5. Long lines spotted at Lucky Plaza

Just before Singapore entered the first phase to exiting the Circuit Breaker period, queues were spotted at Lucky Plaza. This led the concerns and questions being raised by netizens regarding public health and safety.

Many pointed out that Lucky Plaza was a popular venue among Singapore’s migrant workers for its remittance centres with better rates. The photos that circulated online showed people waiting in line, albeit wearing face masks and keeping some distance between one another.

6. Queues sparked by poor planning

A few instances of queuing in 2020 were not by choice. For example, about 200 preschool staff ended up waiting at Khatib MRT on May 15 for their Covid-19 swab tests. The one-time swab testing was extended to over 30,000 preschool and early intervention staff by the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF).

However, due to a scheduling issue experienced by one of the bus service operators, people ended up queuing at the meeting point. Members from the online community responded that the initiative showed “poor planning” and provided suggestions such as scheduling individuals to the closest testing centre to limit crowds.

7. The end of the Circuit Breaker marked by long queues

“I wanted to faint…Siao liao (crazy)” said a member of the public when Phase 2 of exiting the Circuit Breaker was marked with long queues across various areas in Singapore. It appeared that many had a lot of catching up in terms of shopping for their favourite food and drinks. Daiso, IKEA and bubble tea outlets were among the establishments with long lines.

8. IKEA is a favourite queueing spot

Once again, IKEA was placed on the spotlight online when photos of long queues at the outlet’s cafeteria went viral. The uploaded images took place at IKEA’s Tampines outlet. Customers were waiting in line for a meal at the in-house restaurant known for its Swedish meatballs.

Netizens highlighted that all in all, IKEA was a good venue. It has free parking, a canteen where shoppers can sit with friends and family, a play area for the kids, shopping venues, and free aircon.

9. People rushing for Black Friday deals

Early Black Friday morning (Nov 27), shoppers were spotted queueing for some great deals, despite many retail stores moving to online sales for the event. Veteran Black Friday shoppers mentioned they preferred seeing and feeling the items they wished to purchase compared to making a less-informed decision through online shopping.

10. Crowds waiting for hours to check into a hotel

One of the more recent events of Singaporeans queueing was for the SingapoRediscover Vouchers used for a staycation. One hotel, in particular, experienced a surge in guests which led to them waiting for four hours at the reception area. According to an official statement made by the hotel, the guests were encouraged to wait at the holding area or in their restaurants to disperse the crowds. Yet many didn’t want to leave the queue. The ordeal was well documented across social media.

Mediacorp artistes apologise for breaking social distancing rules

0

Singapore – The Ministry of National Development (MND) is investigating Mediacorp artistes for possible breaches of safe distancing measures after a photo celebrating actor Jeffrey Xu’s birthday shows celebrities not wearing a mask and exceeding the limit of five people for a gathering.

According to a straitstimes.com report on Wednesday (Dec 23), the MND was alerted to the incident involving a group gathering at a residence to celebrate Mr Xu’s birthday. “Investigations are ongoing in respect of possible breaches by the various parties,” said an MND representative who did not identify the individuals implicated.

“MND and other government agencies take a serious view of such breaches, and will not hesitate to take firm action against those who are found to have violated safe distancing measures.”

Since being brought into the social media highlight, Mediacorp celebrities Shane Pow, Terence Cao and Mr Xu apologised on Wednesday via the broadcaster.

In one of the photos uploaded in Instagram on Oct 3, a total of 13 people were standing close to each other while Mr Xu was holding a cake. No one was wearing a face mask.

Other celebrities identified in the photo are Jeremy Chan and Julie Tan, who are not managed by Mediacorp.

Under the current Covid-19 regulations social gatherings are limited to groups of five outside a residence and households. The limit will be increased starting Dec 28 to eight people outside the home and as visitors in a household.

A reader had tipped Chinese language publication Shin Min Daily News (SMDN) on Wednesday of the possible breaches in safety measures.

It was later identified that a fourth artiste, 987FM deejay Sonia Chew was also in the photo. Mediacorp had confirmed with SMDN that its four artistes were at the gathering. The company said, “They (the four artistes) deeply regret their actions. They would like to apologise for the mistake and assure everyone that this will not happen again.”

“We take this matter seriously. Safety is a priority. We constantly brief and remind our artistes to adhere to safe management guidelines, both in their professional and personal capacities,” it said in a channelnewsasia.com report.

On Sunday (Dec 20), Ah Boys To Men star Maxi Lim made headlines for possible breaches of Covid-19 safety measures during his and influencer Lizy Teo’s wedding reception held at One Degree 15 Marina in Sentosa Cove on Sunday.

Photos and videos circulating on social media platforms such as Instagram show those at the wedding reception intermingling and not wearing face masks. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) confirmed it received a complaint from a member of the public and is investigating the incident.

First-time offenders of the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act will face a fine of up to S$10,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both. Repeat offenders could be fined up to S$20,000, imprisoned for up to 12 months, or both.

Katy Perry talks about how she met Orlando Bloom

0

Roar hitmaker Katy Perry got candid about how she first met her now-fiancé Orlando Bloom. In a 2019 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel, the 36-year-old recalled her first encounter with the Pirates of the Caribbean actor and how their mutual love of In-N-Out burgers was the key to the beginning of their romance.

“Actually, In-N-Out plays a big role in my life,” Katy told her host. “We bonded over an In-N-Out burger about three years [ago] at the Golden Globes. He stole one off of my table.

“I was sitting with Denzel Washington and he took it and I was like, ‘Wait, who – oh, you’re so hot! Fine, take it.’ And then I saw him at a party, and I was like, ‘How are those onions resting on your molars?'”

In early 2016, Katy and the 43-year-old Orlando started dating and on February 14, 2019, announced their engagement.

She later told Capital Breakfast: “It was Valentine’s Day and I had to work that day and I just remember meeting him at dinner in this place, this Italian restaurant. So I get there and he’s like clean shaven, he’s not wearing tennis shoes. I’m like, ‘Ah… something is going down…'”

The couple met in 2016. Picture: Instagram

The singer then revealed that Orlando continued to “order everything”, leaving her thinking: “Who is this person? He must have been so nervous.” After dinner, the pair went on a helicopter ride. “We landed on this building and went downstairs, and my family and my friends were there and the most flowers – the most flowers you’ve ever seen,” Katy explained.

“You know when Kanye [West] does that for Kim [Kardashian West] – and you’re like ‘Oh my God!'” After host Roman Kemp commented on the “very romantic” proposal, Katy responded: “He’s great, I love him very much.”

The couple shared the exciting news that they were expecting their first baby together in March this year and in August they welcomed their baby girl, Daisy Dove. Daisy is Orlando’s second child. He is the father to nine-year-old Flynn, whom he shares with ex-wife Miranda Kerr.

On Flynn’s bond with his baby sister, Orlando previously told Ellen: “He’s very well versed in little babies, his mum has a couple of little bubbas and he’s the best.

“He’s wonderful. We are all doing a lot of schooling remotely and have been at home a lot and there’s been a lot of time for nesting and getting him to help take care of the baby – sort of!”

16 weeks jail time for nurse for assault of senior at nursing home

Singapore—Thirty-six-year-old Flores Alvin Jay Vargas, a nurse, has been sentenced to 16 weeks’ jail after an incident involving a wheelchair-bound senior citizen in 2019.

Mr Flores, who worked at All Saints Home in Jurong East, pleaded guilty to one count of voluntarily causing hurt on Wednesday, Dec 23. He could have been fined as much as $5,000, been jailed for as long as three years, or both, for the offence of causing grievous hurt.

The nurse, a Filipino national, did not only assault a 67-year-old resident but also asked a fellow staffer to lie about what happened on May 25, 2019.

On the day of the incident, the senior citizen, who had suffered brain trauma in an accident three years ago, asked for a knife because he wanted to cut up an apple.

A staff member at All Saints Home told the resident that he could not have a knife, after which the senior citizen threw a tantrum. He then began pressing the call bell behind his bed several times, according to a report in The New Paper (TNP).

Mr Vargas came and endeavoured to explain to the senior why he couldn’t have a knife.

The senior, however, persisted in pressing the bell. And when the bell was disabled, the senior then kept pressing the handheld staff assist bell.

The nurse then attempted to take the handheld bell away from the senior, who pulled and tore the nurse’s shirt.

This caused Mr Flores to lose his temper, kicking the resident and punching his chest a few times.

Two care home staffers present during the altercation witnessed what Mr Flores had done to the senior, and told him to stop.

Two days after the assault, the senior told his brother about the assault, during a visit from the brother, who filed a report with the police on the same day.

The victim’s brother also requested that the senior be admitted to  Ng Teng Fong General Hospital for one week. A medical report showed that it was suspected that the victim had sustained rib fractures.

Mr Vargas sent a text message to one of the employees who had witnessed the assault asking her to say that he did not punch the victim. The employee then told the police that she had not seen the assault. Whether or not the staff member has been subject to any disciplinary measures is unknown.

The nurse lost his job on the same day that the senior was released from the hospital and went back to the nursing home.

The care home said in a statement on Dec 23 that it takes its residents’ health and safety seriously, and that Mr Vargas was suspended after the complaint was filed and that after it carried out an internal investigation, he was fired.

Additional measures including installing additional security cameras and conducting additional training for senior patients have also been implemented in order to ensure residents’ safety.

Year Ender 2020: What went viral this year (besides the virus)

Singapore — 2020 has been a year like none other. While the COVID-19 pandemic has taken up most of the world’s attention, it isn’t the only thing that has gone viral this year (pardon the pun!). We have put together a list of content that has taken social media by storm, garnering millions of views, likes and shares.

It comes as no surprise to anyone that video-sharing social media app TikTok tops the list of 2020’s most popular apps. For those who aren’t in the know, TikTok is an app that allows users to share short video clips of well, absolutely anything, set to the song of your choosing (there are a multitude of songs to use as background audio on TikTok). Users can interact with each other, comment on videos, and join community “challenges” on the platform.

It can be said that TikTok is the app that defied the pandemic, keeping millions of people occupied, entertained and (relatively) sane during the hardest parts of lockdown, forging connections despite global isolation. It is also the platform for most of 2020’s viral content.

TikTok videos

TikTok videos of all sorts have flooded the internet all year, but the most viral? With a staggering 530 million plus views (yes, you read that right), it’s this video by overnight TikTok sensation Bella Poarch:

@bellapoarchTo the ? ? ? ##fyp♬ M to the B – Millie B

The short clip shows Poarch lip-syncing to the Millie B song “M to the B” with exaggerated facial expressions and crossed eyes. The American-Filipina has since then risen to fame as one of TikTok’s biggest influencers and continues to focus on lip-syncing videos with coordinated facial moves.

The second most viral TikTok video of 2020 is something else entirely. Apparently, skateboarding to Fleetwood Mac’s song “Dreams” while drinking Ocean Spray Cran-Raspberry juice is a viral combination, because it has since garnered nearly 12 million views. Nathan Apocada, or @420doggface208, changed his life when he filmed this video:

@420doggface208Morning vibe ##420souljahz ##ec ##feelinggood ##h2o ##cloud9 ##happyhippie ##worldpeace ##king ##peaceup ##merch ##tacos ##waterislife ##high ##morning ##710 ##cloud9♬ Dreams (2004 Remaster) – Fleetwood Mac

Apocada’s video launched him into stardom overnight. Thanks to his video going viral, “Dreams” (released in 1977) was back on Billboard’s Top 10 Streaming Songs chart, and Ocean Spray Cran-Raspberry sold out in stores everywhere. Ocean Spray was so grateful for the overwhelming publicity they received that they gifted Apocada with a 2020 Nissan Frontier!

TikTok dances and songs

No doubt the best thing—if you like to move and groove—to come out of the popular app are the dance challenges that have taken the world by storm. 2020 on TikTok has been all about unleashing your inner diva, and there has been a lot of dancing. Dance challenges have become all the rage, with users showing off their moves as they dance to popular songs. The more exaggerated the moves, the more literal the interpretation, the better!

When 17-year-old Haley Sharpe created her own choreograph for Doja Cat’s song “Say So”, it exploded all over TikTok. Her dance moves were copied all over the platform and even helped Doja’s song skyrocket to new heights of fame, both on TikTok and in the music charts. The music artist generously acknowledged Sharpe’s influence by inviting her to perform the dance routine in the official music video for the song, all the while roller skating at a disco rink, ’70s style.

@yodelinghaleyHERE IT IS!! the full say so dance??♬ say so by doja cat – haley sharpe

Artist Kesha’s song “Cannibal” has become TikTok gold, too. With moves originally created by TikTok user Briana Hantsch, the dance has become a hit sensation on the video-sharing app, with Kesha herself doing the dance moves alongside TikTok super-influencer Charli D’Amelio.

TikTok hasn’t just been fun for people stuck at home; artists everywhere have the video-sharing platform and its users to thank for giving new life to their songs.

TikTok food trends

Besides dance-and-song fads and popularising random doodads, food features largely on the video-sharing platform. Who isn’t a foodie in their own right anyway? TikTok introduced a new trend that really took off—viral baking.

When people found themselves at home thanks to the pandemic, there was naturally a lot of baking and cooking going on. But TikTok to it to new, viral heights, and suddenly everyone connected with their inner home baker.

The banana bread craze that took TikTok by storm can be credited to chef and author Shereen Pavlides (@cookingwithshereen), whose from-scratch banana bread video in March was viewed by more than 24.8 million TikTokers and “hearted” by more than 4 million.

Seeing meat falling off the bone is undoubtedly a satisfying experience, and millions of people on TikTok agree. In February of this year, TikToker @bbqfreedom served up an ah-ma-zing video of the tenderest, most delicious slab of barbecued meat you have ever seen in your life, and the best part? Meat cleanly falling off a huge bit chunk of bone. It’s decadent, it’s addictive, and it’s mesmerising—no wonder it’s garnered over 43 million views. Yup, it’s that good. Check it out—you can’t un-see it, and you don’t want to.

Memes

Memes, one of social media’s favourite modes of expression, has continued to live long and prosper throughout 2020, with people getting more creative, inventive and sarcastic than ever.

The “My plans – 2020” meme is something everyone can relate to, and it’s precisely for that reason that it went so viral, so quickly—

Woman yells at HDB Hub’s elderly staff: “Don’t make things difficult for me!”

Videos of a woman yelling at the elderly staff of the Housing & Development Board (HDB) Hub went viral over the week as netizens watched her unreasonably lose her cool.

In a video circulated on TikTok and social media, a woman could be seen and heard shouting at two HDB Hub staff. Accompanying her was also a man clad in white.

The clip was filmed by someone a short distance away, but the woman could be heard saying in a loud voice: “Don’t make things difficult for me!”

She was supposedly there to submit a tender, but according to the exchange in the video, did not make an appointment. According to the HDB’s website, Services at HDB Hub and Branches are by appointment only.

Once the woman raised her voice, a male staff, responded loudly as well: “Nobody is making things difficult for you!”

“Then?!” the woman demanded.

When the staff tried to calm her down and talk to her, the woman refused and loudly replied: “I don’t give a damn!”

When another staff member approached her, the woman shouted that she has an “invite”, and nobody informed her that she was required to make an “e-appointment”.

She yelled: “If yes, I’ll do it! I’m not stupid! I’m not an old person!”

She insisted that she wanted to submit the tender now and continued to shout that she wanted to make an e-appointment.

HDB Hub’s staff member lost his temper and was seen shouting back for the woman to listen to him.

At this point, the woman too started screaming at the top of her lungs. Her male companion also pulled down his mask to shout at the staff.

The commotion ends as a HDB Hub security guard walks over. /TISG

Prosecutor asks for 2 months jail for Ms Universe Singapore contestant who used friends’ debit, credit cards

Singapore — On Wednesday (Dec 23), a former Ms Universe Singapore contestant pleaded guilty to four charges under the Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act.

Twenty-seven-year-old Ashley Rita Wong Kai Lin admitted that she had memorized the debit and credit card details of some of her friends and then used these details to buy items without their knowledge. She has no prior convictions and will be back in court in February.

For her sentencing, 27 other charges under the Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act have been taken into consideration.

Ms Wong’s first offence occurred in 2016, after she went out with a 28-year-old man, who had been introduced by a mutual friend, CNA reported.

On one occasion that Ms Wong was with this man, she took his debit card from his wallet while he was in the restroom. She memorised the details on his card and then returned it to the wallet.

Unaware that Ms Wong had done this, the man later noticed that someone had used his card for purchases. He confronted Ms Wong, who admitted that she used the card for shopping online.

CNA states that between August and September of that year, she made over unauthorized purchases online on his card, spending nearly S$200 at a fashion store, more than S$320 on something bought from Lazada, and over S$300 on tickets.

The man was able to dispute with the bank for one of the transactions, and Ms Wong paid him back for the other two purchases.

However, Ms Wong went on to use the debit card information of a 26-year-old female friend. This friend found out that Ms Wong had used her card to make unauthorised purchases when the friend tried to pay for something online and did not have enough money in her debit card.

The friend found out about a $S264 charge for accommodations at Hotel Clover. She also discovered that other people had already confronted Ms Wong about using their credit or debit card details without their knowledge.

Ms Wong admitted to her friend that she had taken her card details. The friend then disputed the hotel charge with her bank and received a refund. The hotel paid the bank back, and Ms Wong in turn paid the hotel.

The prosecutor on Ms Wong’s case has asked that she be jailed for two months, pointing out that over S$2,000 was involved in Ms Wong’s offences that were committed against three victims across 31 charges.

He did note, however, Ms Wong’s guilty plea and her endeavours toward restitution, and that the delays to previous hearings were due to the pandemic and were not her fault.

Ms Wong said to the judge that she has been seeing a psychiatrist for the sake of her mental health, and is not on medication. In her psychiatric report, she said that “in 2016, I was really behaving out of character and it was not something I would normally do at all”. —/TISG

“One down, 19 more to go,” Goh Chok Tong on first radiation therapy session

Singapore—Former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong shared a photo of his first radiation therapy session on Wednesday afternoon (Dec 23) on his Facebook account.

Mr Goh, 79, has been open about his recent health issues, in part to encourage other Singaporeans to advocate for themselves by availing of health tests and screenings, he wrote last week.

His photo showed “the custom-made mask to hold my head absolutely still while the machine zapped the bad spot on my larynx. No swallowing as it zapped. I focused on my breathing and the present – a little bit of mindfulness.”

The procedure did not last very long, and Mr Goh said it was “all over in a matter of minutes.”

“One down, 19 more to go,” he added. He wrote in another Facebook post last week that he has 20 radiation therapy sessions all in all.

In the past few weeks, he shared that he had to go to the hospital to remove a kidney stone and to biopsy a suspicious nodule in his larynx.

Mr Goh wrote last week that squamous cells had been found in the nodule in his larynx, but, “Fortunately, after excision, the MRI of the neck and the CT scan of the chest showed no trace of these bad cells.”

Despite this, however, he still needs radiation therapy to ensure that no cancer cells remain in his body.

“Just like the weather these days, it never rains but pours for me medically…. What a way to celebrate the festive season!”

The former Prime Minister, who stepped down from public duties shortly before the General Election in July, said that he has shared his “medical episodes” for a purpose, to encourage every person to have their regular or yearly health screenings.

And while he wrote that he does not have a subsidised programme for screening for potential illnesses, the Ministry of Health does have a subsidised Screen for Life programme for all Singaporeans.

Mr Goh underlined the importance of early detection and treatment, especially in cases similar to his, as this would exponentially enhance a person’s chances of survival.

“For those who may experience a lump in the throat and a change in the voice, see an ENT doctor. Ignorance, delay and denial may be costly. Spot and treat the cancer early, the 5-year survival rate is over 90 percent. Do it after it has spread, the survival rate drops to below 30 percent.”

And in the meantime, Mr Goh seemed in good spirits and expressed the hopes of a good prognosis before long.

“My thundery showers will pass. I am looking forward to clear blue sky before the Chinese New Year — and more good years thereafter.

Season’s Greetings and good health to all. — gct”

Again, well-wishers flocked to Mr Goh’s Facebook page, including Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin.

Kaitlynn Carter was ‘deeply in love’ with Miley Cyrus

0

Kaitlynn Carter went public to talk about the piece she wrote for Elle about her split with Miley Cyrus. She went on to say that she truly loved Miley and that writing the essay helped her understand that.

In 2019, Liam Hemsworth filed for divorce from Miley Cyrus. On the very same day, it was reported that Miley was casually seeing Brody Jenner’s ex-wife Kaitlynn Carter, as they were spotted making out on a yacht during a holiday in Italy. Miley and Kaitlynn ended their fling almost a year and a half ago but Kaitlynn is still sharing about how real their love was and also the juicy essay she wrote for Elle post breakup.

Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter dated briefly. Picture: Instagram

Kaitlynn was candid about how that Italy trip made her realise she had feelings for Miley. She wrote:

“As my friend and I spent that August traveling through Europe together and trying to move past our respective breakups, my first and only romance with a woman was born. Reflecting back on our three-year friendship, I realized I’d always been drawn to her in a way I wasn’t with other friends, but until that trip, it had never crossed my mind to think of her in a romantic sense.”

Fortunately, Kaitlynn did not regret writing that essay. Sharing on Monday’s episode of the Scrubbing In podcast, she said, “I’m not at all embarrassed by the Elle piece.” At that time, fans were shocked by Miley and Kaitlynn’s relationship but for Kaitlynn she said, “no one was more surprised that I was all of a sudden dating one of my girlfriends than I was,” which was partially why she wanted to write that essay.

“When I look back, I know that I had feelings for her that were maybe different from feelings I had for other friends,” Kaitlynn added. “It was entirely unintentional, but I was very deeply in love with this person.”

Since dating Miley, Kaitlynn has opted to be more private with her relationships. “What I’ve really realized is now with dating, I’m super private about it,” she said on Nick Viall’s Viall Files podcast in June. “Since last fall, once that whole situation [with Miley] came to a wrap, I was like, ‘That’s the last time I’m doing a public thing.’” Got it! Until next time then!
