Why do people get ghosted

0
why-do-people-get-ghosted

It’s been a great couple of dates, or you’ve had some intriguing conversation and all of a sudden messages stop, texts are unanswered, and you’ve been blocked. You start to feel agitated and uneasy. Could something bad have happened to your new love interest?

Then you see another post or hear about that person being perfectly well, alive and kicking. And then that sinking feeling sets in. Yup, you’ve been ghosted.

Ghosting is when someone cuts off all means of communication with absolutely no explanation. It’s a terrible feeling.

For most people it’s very confusing and disorienting, why would anyone treat someone so heartlessly out of the blue, especially when things may have been going well.

Is ghosting a new trend

According to a study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships in 2018, out of 1,300 people, a quarter of them have been ghosted by a partner, while one-fifth reported that they have ghosted someone.

It usually occurs in short-term relationships, which are distinguished by low commitment and little to no intimacy.

Reasons for this vary; some do it for convenience as having a direct conversation can be unpleasant, and they prefer a passive approach.

The attraction has faded. This could simply mean that there is a loss of interest and the ‘ghoster’ rather take the easy way out than confront the issue.

A sudden change in feeling from intense attraction to repulsion. This sometimes happens when you newly get to know someone and everything is coasting along rather smoothly and all of a sudden they do something completely off-putting, offensive or repulsive in your eyes.

Security is also an issue. Stalker-like behaviour can manifest suddenly, or a person may turn out to be just plain creepy and then ghosting happens.

However, as much as these seem like reasonable reasons for ghosting, be aware that ghosting can happen for no reason at all, leaving the person on the receiving end feeling lost, confused and struggling for closure.

How to find closure and move on from being ghosted? This could especially be hard for people who have a sensitive or empathetic nature, and who cannot imagine doing the same to someone.

Tune in to our upcoming edition on relationships and how to cope with ghosting to find out more.

After a woman joined a new company earlier this year, she found that her female manager was behaving rather strangely, to the point where she felt compelled to write about it online, asking others for advice.

In her anonymous post on popular Facebook page SGWhispers, the woman wrote that she encountered “unusual behaviour from female manager”. She added that she started working for a new company at the beginning of the year and that it was her manager who wanted to work with her.

In her post on Friday (Jun 24), she wrote that she once caught her manager eavesdropping on her conversation with another colleague at work for an important task they had to perform. And since her manager refused to help her, she ended up having to seek assistance from those in another department.

The netizen added that her manager will go as far as even stealing her ideas openly. Feeling singled out, she wrote that her manager constantly focused on her even though other employees were doing personal activities during work hours.

Frustrated, the netizen wrote: “I don’t understand why she is doing all these strange things. Can anybody explain her behaviour, please? Thanks in advance”.

Here’s what those who responded to her post said:

Johnny Depp ‘wishes no ill will’ for Amber Heard, won’t ‘jump on social media hate bandwagon’

As per a new report, Johnny is happy now, weeks after winning the defamation trial against Amber. According to it, the actor wants to move on with his life.

Hollywood Life quoted a source saying, “After all is said and done, Johnny wishes no ill will for Amber. He isn’t going to jump on the social media hate bandwagon, and he just wants to move forward with his own life.”

“Johnny can’t wait to go on tour next year and even though it’s a ways away he has a ton of projects lined up to keep him very busy in the meantime. Johnny is happier than he has been in a long time and he feels like this is a whole new chapter for him. Music has always been cathartic for Johnny and this is really what he needs right now after all the stress and drama he’s dealt with for the past several years,” it added.

Following a six-week trial, a jury awarded Johnny $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, finding that Amber had defamed him by referring to herself as a domestic abuse victim in a Washington Post op-ed in 2018. In accordance with Virginia law, the punitive damages were reduced to $350,000, bringing the grand total to $10.35 million.

For Amber’s counterclaim, $2 million in compensatory damages were awarded to her by the jury, who found that Johnny had defamed her through statements made by his attorney, Adam Waldman, to the press. Amber was spotted recently in the Hamptons shopping at TJ Maxx and is in talks to write a tell-all book.

Meanwhile, Johnny will go on an overseas tour with his rock band Hollywood Vampires next year. Apart from him, the overseas tour will include band members Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, and Tommy Henriksen. The first gig would be held on June 20, 2023, at Oberhausen’s Rudolf Weber Arena in Germany while the rock band would perform their last gig on June 30 in Mainz’s Zitadelle, in Germany, the same year.

Johnny has also been seen performing on stage with English guitarist Jeff Beck at several UK venues in the last few weeks. He had travelled to Europe to accompany Jeff and perform with him, amid his trial verdict against Amber. The actor, along with Jeff, will release a 13-track album, 18, on July 15.

Bride claims baker ‘scammed’ them after he claimed he got COVID on their wedding day and could not bake their cake

A woman claimed that a “finalist baker” she had contracted to make her wedding cake “scammed” them after he failed to deliver on his promise, claiming on the morning of her wedding day that he had caught Covid.

The woman added that the baker had no backup bakers who could step in should anything happen, contrary to what the man had promised.

Neither did the man provide proof that he caught Covid when he was asked.

Moreover, it took the couple a while to obtain a refund from the baker.

“After that, he only gave back a partial refund and after 2 weeks of constant chasing and him constantly delaying, he proceed to refund the rest,” wrote Celeste Azure Tan on the COMPLAINT SINGAPORE Facebook page on Monday (June 27).

Ms Tan did not name the baker or his shop, but posted screenshots of their exchanges, where the names Crisp Crumb and Salleh can be clearly seen. There is also a screenshot of the baker’s face blurred out.

As of this writing, the bakery’s Instagram account has been made unavailable.

Additionally, there is only one listing left for a cake on the account’s Carousell page.

Ms Tan wrote, “We wanted to support home-based businesses that were halal and also reasonable pricing. I saw beautiful ones in this carousell listing under crisp.crumb. Though it had 1 negative review, the rest were positive. I also searched online that it was a registered business. The seller was friendly and when asked about the negative review, he said there will be back up bakers if anything happened. We got a wedding cake with macarons.”

She also wrote that the baker “kept pushing for payment” but “after payment, he was much less responsive. He kept delaying giving me a receipt/invoice for my order.”

And when she reached out to him shortly before the wedding, he did not reply.

“Finally, on my actual wedding day at 5am, he texted me he could not deliver. There were no back up bakers. And no proof he had Covid. I was very sad and my husband was very angry.

My family had to scramble to get macarons as they were to be used as wedding favours. And we had to pay much more because of the last-minute order.”

Ms Tan added that the experience had been a “very terrible experience” for her and her husband, and called the baker out on his poor ethics and service recovery.

We could have asked for greater compensation regarding the psychological stress faced on the day itself, the stress that my family had to go through to find replacement macarons, and the overall negative emotions faced on the day itself. I do hope this news gets out there so consumers like me will not face similar situations,” she wrote.

A review on the shop’s Carousell page appears to have been made by Ms Tan’s husband.

There was a similar review on the page as well, with the reviewer writing, “Deal at own risk.”

Despite Rising Omicron Sub-Variants, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong Says No Need for Tighter COVID Measures; Netizens Speculate Post-NDP & F1 Adjustments

At a visit to a mobile vaccination centre in Nee Soon Central on Monday (June 27), Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that tighter safe management measures are not needed at the moment, despite growing Covid-19 cases and the expectation of even higher numbers.

Mr Lawrence Wong also announced that every household in Singapore will receive 10 antigen rapid test kits (ARTs). He also said that the rise in Covid-19 infections in Singapore is due to the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron sub-variants.

On June 21, the Ministry of Health said that the percentage of Covid infections due to the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants had risen last week to 30 per cent, although the majority of the country’s cases are due to the BA.2 sub-variant.

“The surge in BA.4 and BA.5 cases is likely to continue, driven by their higher transmissibility compared to BA.2,” the ministry added.

On June 27, DPM Lawrence Wong said, “We should expect cases to continue to rise.”

Lawrence Wong assured, however, that the country should be able to “ride through this wave”  even without additional safe management measures, although he said a close eye would be kept on the number of infections.

“This includes the infection trajectory over the coming weeks, severity, as well as our hospital situation. And if need be, we will have to make adjustments.

For now, we think we don’t need any tightening of measures, we do not have to tap on the brakes.

But as we all know, it’s always a highly fluid and dynamic situation,” The Straits Times quotes DPM as saying.

By and large, netizens appeared to cheer the need for no additional restrictions, with some expressing the hope that these will not be necessary, especially if people continue to take personal responsibility.

Others, however, that after the National Day Parade and Formula 1, or the Singapore Grand Prix, restrictions would be tightened again.

Letter to the Editor | Racism and the ugliness of human nature still remains a critical challenge for every race

Dear Editor,

I refer to the report, “TODAY goes live: Getting to the root of racism.” (June 25)

I’m glad to learn that TODAY will be hosting a live webinar session on Instagram on 29 June to discuss the touchy but vital issue of racism in Singapore. It is in partnership with the National Youth Council.

Undeniably, racism exists in any part of the world for centuries. The seriousness of racism and its frequency of occurrences vary with latitude and depth or differ from country to country.

An undoubted fact remains, neither any race nor any culture on this planet is perfect, and it is because the ugliness of human nature still remains a critical challenge for every race.

In view of this vital fact, we must recognise our own weaknesses and strengths. Most importantly, we should always do introspection on our shortcomings, and we should be very mindful of our words used in the daily conversation, discussion or written communication with our multiracial colleagues, schoolmates, school teachers and in other events.

Thus, it is of utmost significance to safeguard our national fabric of multiracialism at all times and at any price.

Singapore started as an immigrant society in 1819. Its four main races namely Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Eurasian have been contributing all their efforts and sacrifices to the nation’s building, national defence and economic prosperity.

There is a Chinese proverb, “Do not do to others for what you don’t want to be done to you.” Hence, we should respect and help other minority races to progress and bond together.

In short, our multiracial, multi-religious and multicultural society should firmly condemn any sensitive, inflammatory, toxic and racist online remarks and place a strong emphasis on achieving a fair, equitable, transparent, coherent, harmonious and inclusive Singapore.

Lawyer MRavi ordered to pay additional $20,000 to AGC: Crowdfunding continues

While still in the midst of raising funds to pay thousands of dollars in costs in connection with death row penalty cases, lawyer Ravi M Ravi, along with an associate, was ordered by the High Court to pay an additional $20,000 to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

High Court judge Valerie Thean said in a judgment released on Thursday (June 23) that Mr Ravi and Cheng Kim Kuan, his supervising solicitor, are liable to pay the costs of a failed application by 17 death row inmates who alleged ethnic bias.

The inmates, represented by Mr Ravi, had all been sentenced to death for drug trafficking or drug importation offences. They had utilised statistical evidence in their application to claim that as Malays, in comparison to other ethnicities, the inmates were more likely to be investigated, prosecuted and given the death penalty for drug offences.

Justice Thean dismissed the application last December, calling it an abuse of process.

The two lawyers must pay the additional cost order of $20,000 by July 11.

Activist Kirsten Han, who helped Mr Ravi with his crowdfunding efforts to raise the money he was ordered to pay last May, wrote in a Facebook post on Monday (June 27) that the lawyer “is being made to pay huge amounts of money to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for fighting tooth-and-nail for death row prisoners.”

Ms Han added that thanks to those who have supported the crowdfunding, Mr Ravi has already been able to pay $30,000 to the AGC, which breaks down to $10,000 for an application relating to the disproportionate representation of Malays on death row in Singapore and $20,000 for applications filed in relation to the case of Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam, which drew international attention last year.

“Heavy price to pay for trying to save lives in Singapore,” Mr Ravi wrote in a Facebook post on June 7, as he posted a photo of a check for $20,000 he had just handed over to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

And while Mr Ravi was still in the middle of raising another $12,000 he needed for applications filed in relation to three other prisoners on death row when the additional cost order of $20,000 was given.

The lawyer had written on June 17 that he had raised nearly half of the $12,000 and that he was “Hoping to get over this final hurdle soon.”

Ms Han provided the details for how those who would like to support Mr Ravi’s crowdfunding may help:
