Delivery rider leaves food order on floor outside flat, customer says, ‘It’s really poor service from delivery team up to management’

A woman took to social media in dismay after discovering that her food order had been left on the floor outside her door by the Grab delivery rider.

Ms Kenny Wong added in a July 12 (Tuesday) post on the COMPLAINT Singapore Facebook page that she tried to call Grab’s hotline many times to complain about the unhygienic delivery, but got no answer.

When she finally got through via the feedback chat on the Grab app, she was told that it was past 12 hours since the food had been delivered “so investigation cant be done.

It’s really poor service provided from the delivery team up to the management I guess,” she added.

Ms Wong posted a photo of a plastic bag containing her food order placed in front of a floor mat outside a gate.

She wrote in her post, “The driver just put the food in a very bad manner. I found my food at the floor outside my door gate. The driver didn’t use the doorbell nor call my mother in-law whom just outside living room watching the TV.

The driver /delivery person mad to just put the food in the floor no hygiene and respect !!! hope grab will look into this.”

She added in a postscript that there is a hook on her gate and that her unit has a doorbell.

Moreover, her mother-in-law had been in the living room waiting for the delivery, as Ms Wong was bathing her baby around the time the rider delivered the food.

“I’m a platinum grab member , and not a first time grab user I’m just shocked of such thing happened +the poor management response,” Ms Wong added.

Many commenters agreed with her.

Some netizens sympathized with her but asked her not to be too hard on the delivery rider.

Some commenters wrote that on the other hand, how the food was delivered to Ms Wong is exactly how many want their orders to be given to them, which might cause some confusion to delivery riders.

Another wrote that the rider could have at least knocked on Ms Wong’s door.

Girl spies rare Raffles’ banded langur (monkey) trapped in drainage canal at Yio Chu Kang

One 13-year-old girl spied a Raffles’ banded langur on July 8, which seemed to be trapped. Ms Julianne Teo saw the langur from a window at her Yio Chu Kang home on Friday morning (July 8), Coconuts reported on July 13.

The primate looked to be in distress as it tried to leave the bottom of a drainage canal between a part of a forest in Lentor and a residential area.

On July 7, Julianne’s mum, Regina, saw a mother and her two langur babies in the same area, and one of the younger langurs had apparently gotten left behind in the drain.

Mrs Teo told Coconuts that she was worried about the young primate since it had nothing to use to climb out the drain, which was three meters deep.

And when she placed a rope over the drain, the primate did not use it either.

After this, Mrs Teo called ACRES, a local animal welfare group, for help.

Kalai Vanan Balakrishnan, who is the organisation’s co-chief executive, along with Tan Hui Min and Aaron Hyberger, who are volunteers with the group, came over.

“The sun was scorching hot and we were informed that the critically endangered primate seemed to be moving slower and getting weaker. We had to act fast,” Mr Balakrishnan is quoted as saying.

The rescuers went into the canal using a ladder and were able to catch the langur with a net.

The young primate was then examined and when determined to be unharmed, was released into the forest on-site, Coconuts reported.

The exact location of the sighting and release of the Raffles’ banded langur has not been disclosed by ACRES, to prevent an influx of photographers and even poachers from flocking to the site.

Mr Hyberger said that immediately after the langur was released, “she took off into the trees and started calling for the others.”

Coconuts added that it is the second time Julianne and her family have seen the langurs this year.

The Raffles’ banded langur, which can only be found in Singapore and southern Peninsular Malaysia, was listed as critically endangered last year, having been threatened with habitat loss.

There are only around 300 to 400 of the species alive at present, with around 250 to 300 in Malaysia and 60 to 70 in Singapore.

“Loss of habitats due to urban development reduces resources and space for the population to grow. Habitat fragmentation prevents the mixing of langur groups. Road accidents and mortalities happen when langurs attempt to cross roads to get from one forest patch to another. Over time, as the population size becomes smaller, the gene pool of the species decreases, resulting in inbreeding and poor genetic health. A lack of awareness of the existence of the species will also hamper conservation efforts,” reads the website of primatologist Andie Ang, the president of Jane Goodall Institute (Singapore). /TISG

Customer complained stall charging $15 for 3 pcs ngoh hiang & 4 pcs beancurd, but stall owner said, if price unreasonable, don’t buy

In a recent article, a man and his friends complained after being charged what they felt was a too-expensive price for a mixed platter of fried ngoh hiang and beancurd at a food stall at a coffee shop.

The platter, which cost $15, contained three pieces of ngoh hiang and four pieces of beancurd.

Future of crypto in Singapore uncertain after collapse of 3AC

0

Cryptocurrency fund Three Arrows Capital Pte Ltd (3AC) recently collapsed amid the downturn of digital currency around the world, and the bad news is that it may drag others along with it.

3AC, one of the most well-known crypto hedge funds around the globe, had managed around $10 billion in assets even until March of this year.

Today, however, the company is headed for bankruptcy and is unable to pay its creditors.

Moreover, 3AC’s founders, Zhu Su and Kyle Davies have reportedly gone missing, with the legal representatives of 3AC’s creditors saying that the whereabouts of the founders are “currently unknown.”

Messrs Zhu and Davies have also reportedly not cooperated with the liquidation process “in any meaningful manner.”

In Zhu’s most recent tweet, dated July 12, he wrote “Sadly, our good faith to cooperate with the Liquidators was met with baiting. Hope that they did exercise good faith wrt the StarkWare token warrants.”

Industry experts now expect that the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) will tighten restrictions.

“After recent events it appears likely that the MAS will get tougher on crypto and digital assets,” said Hoi Tak Leung, a senior technology sector lawyer at Ashurst LLP, quoted as saying in a Reuters article.

In 2021, investment in the country’s crypto and blockchain companies rose to US$1.48 billion, ten times higher than the previous year.

But MAS has been cautious, granting only “a handful” of new crypto payments licenses to the over 150 crypto companies that applied.

3AC’s fall will make things even more difficult. A court in the British Virgin Islands put the company under liquidation on June 27 due to the company’s failure to pay its creditors.

Its liquidation is being handled by Teneo, an advisory and consulting firm.

3AC’s collapse has left other crypto companies in a world of pain. Due to unpaid loans, Blockchain.com is said to be facing a US$270 million loss, while Voyager Digital has filed for bankruptcy after 3AC could not pay back around US$670 million. Other companies facing losses are Genesis, BlockFi, BitMEX and FTX.

“We will continue to see crypto markets globally being impacted by the contagion effect of recent market events, including in Singapore, a major cryptocurrency hub,” Reuters quoted Rose Kehoe, managing director in Kroll’s restructuring practice in Singapore, as saying. /TISG

Woman asks what to do if husband is ‘typical male chauvinist’ — controls, gaslights her, but takes care of her & children well

0

“What do I do if my partner doesn’t think he has a problem despite voicing it out to him?,” wrote one woman on the NUS Whispers Facebook page.

She describes her life with her husband’s controlling and condescending behaviour towards her as “a rollercoaster ride with all the ups and downs,” and added that she “really wish(es) for peace.”

Advice such as suggesting counselling would be futile, the woman added, since the man’s “belief is so cult-like it is impossible to talk sense into him and he truly believes he is a good husband/father.”

The woman described the man as “decent” when they first got together, but he has since changed. She gave examples such as commanding her, shutting her up when he’s focused on something while she needs to talk to him, putting her job down, gaslighting and scolding her.

“For eg, last night I wanted to brush my teeth first before helping my older son brush his teeth. Bt he scolded me and said that I have already spent very long showering/eating and I should help my older son first.

Note: I wanted to brush my teeth so I can bring my younger son into the room so my helper is free to help my older son brush his teeth. It is just another 5 mins at most?”

However, she acknowledged that he is “not a complete jerk as he takes care of the family in his own ‘unique’ way,” and that he does provide for his family well.

“I feel like I’m on a rollercoaster ride with all the ups and downs and I really wish for peace. What should I do? Please do not ask me to talk sense into him or go for counselling. He doesn’t think he has an issue. He thinks everyone else is at fault,” she added.

Netizens told her that the biggest red flag is that her husband believes that nothing is ever his fault.

Some told her to “find another husband” and just leave the marriage.

Another said that if the man refuses to get counselling, the woman can get some help for herself.

One told her that if she wants to stay in the marriage, she needs to learn to shrug off his behaviour.

One warned her, however, that he’s “never going to change.”

However, according to a July 11 report in Shin Min Daily News, after the men complained, the vendor said that they usually inform customers about the prices of the food they sell, and if the customers feel these are unreasonable, they can choose not to buy.

Food prices, after all, have gone up due to inflation.

The customer who complained of the vendor’s high price at a coffee shop at Blk 167 Woodlands Street 13 is Mr Xu, a driver who had visited the coffee shop on July 6 along with five of his friends.

And while the prices for individual dishes were shown on the stall’s menu, the prices for platters were not.

But Xu and his friends were informed about the $15 cost for the mixed platter of fried ngoh hiang and fried beancurd by the stall owner, Shin Min Daily News reported.

Many netizens commenting on the issue acknowledged that food prices have really gone up and that there is no point in complaining.

One commenter said that it looks as though many in Singapore will follow the example of western countries, where people rarely eat out and mostly cook at home.

A woman rather controversially wrote that it “seems that there is ongoing trend that some hawker stalls are putting very high price on the food to pass on all the increased rental and other fees to customers” and suggested “to support those hawker stalls that price their food reasonably instead.”

“Always find out the price of the food before we order,” advised another.

Some felt that the men who complained were being unfair to the stall.

Others felt that the vendor was charging too much.

Gerald Giam: Hiring challenges point to more worrying trend of insufficient Singaporeans entering in-demand fields

During a recent visit with residents, business owners talked to Workers’ Party MP Gerald Giam about their challenges in finding people to fill various jobs.

“Their concerns were not simply about difficulties obtaining work passes for foreign workers. Instead these hiring challenges point to a more worrying trend of insufficient Singaporeans entering fields that are in demand by industry,” the Aljunied GRC Member of Parliament wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday (July 12).

The group of business owners, whom Mr Giam talked to at a kopitiam, told him about the difficulties they face in filling technical positions, production lines and service roles.

The MP added that the concerns about there not being enough Singaporeans to fill in-demand fields should not be dismissed as merely “a result of pickiness or an unwillingness to endure hardship.”

He added that “instead, a more productive approach would be to examine why more young Singaporeans choose not to enter disciplines like engineering or switch to other fields upon graduation.”

He then proceeded to ask whether “pay, working conditions, the image of the industry, management expertise, lack of career progression, or a combination of all these factors” are what is at play in Singaporeans not choosing to pursue these in-demand careers.

Mr Giam added, however, that these factors will need to be addressed if Singapore is to moderate an over-reliance on foreign workers while at the same time creating “exciting job opportunities” for Singaporeans.

He then appealed for feedback from anyone with similar experiences.

“Do you run a business facing these recruitment challenges? Are you a job seeker who is facing difficulties landing a job despite your efforts to upgrade your skills? Do comment below or reach out to me by WhatsApp at 89250747 and share your experiences with me.”

One commenter obliged by telling the MP that policies are somewhat responsible for the situation.

“Is not Singaporean are not willing to enter or be in the field of engineering, this mindset is absolutely wrong. The employers and MOM policy are to be blamed for importing too many India engineered, firewall IT engineers into Singapore resulting the work culture is loop-sided.”

The netizen also provided an example from the company of one of their colleagues.

A real example my colleague company is flooded with engineers from India as for production from Malaysia, China, Philippines as technician, Supervisor FT too vs local long service one or two out of five supervisors, shipping n warehousing from Malaysia and mostly all the long service local blue Singaporean engineering manager, softwares personnel or troubleshooting engineers all gone or retrenched. Pity them but is a real reality…so many jobs Singaporean could do but all gone to FT.” /TISG

“Is This Your Idea Of Public Housing?” — Lim Tean asks after 5-room Dawson HDB flat sells for record $1.418M

Photo: FB screengrab

A 5-room HDB flat at SkyTerrace @ Dawson sold for an all-time high of $1.418 million, 99.co reported on Wednesday, July 13.

“Keeping up with the most expensive HDB flat ever sold is proving to be a challenge, as flats all over Singapore keep fighting valiantly for the title,” the article read.

Lawyer and opposition leader Lim Tean had an entirely different take, however.

“Is This Your Idea Of Public Housing?” he asked in a Facebook post.

“I have just been informed that a 5 room HDB flat at Dawson has sold for $1.418 million, making it the most expensive HDB flat ever sold.

This is another manifestation of how our public housing policy has become totally warped! Do you think this is a fair burden to place on Singaporeans and our next generation?

Do we want a strong community of Citizens or do we want to be Monte Carlo?” added Mr Lim, who heads the People’s Voice Party.

99.co noted that just two months ago, another 5-room flat, this time at City Vue @ Henderson, set the all-time high record, selling for S$1.4 million in May.

It describes the new record holder at Dawson as “a premium loft apartment on the high floor of 37 to 39. It spans 1,313 sq ft” adding that it was built in 2016 and has a remaining lease of 92 years and 10 months.

Furthermore, the article noted that the average price per square foot of 5-room units in the development increased by 43.10 per cent since the last quarter of 2019.

It added that the flat, an HDB loft penthouse unit, is no ordinary one.

“Only 26 5-room loft penthouse units out of 758 units were built in SkyTerrace @ Dawson, making these houses even more exclusive and covetable. As soon as one hits the market, buyers fall over themselves to snap it up, and they don’t mind paying a premium.”

Eighteen of such units have so far sold for more than one million dollars.

99.co pointed out that the flat’s location, its relative newness, and the fact that it’s on a mature estate also make it extraordinary.

The prices of HDB flats have been rising steadily, growing by 1.2 per cent in June after a .5 per cent increase in May.

In June as well, there were 31 HDB resale flats sold for at least S$1 million: six at Bishan, five in the Central area, four in Ang Mo Kio and four at Kallang/Whampoa.

Commenters on Mr Lim’s post also expressed concern over the rising prices of public housing.

“In the future children grown up has no choice but to stay with their parents regardless of the constraints space,” wrote one.

Another chimed in, “If this goes on some Singapore people may live in cage homes like in Hong Kong.”

Where Can I Spend My NS55 Credit Vouchers in Singapore?

Who Is Eligible for the NS55  Credit Voucher?

As MINDEF marks 55 years of National Service (NS), the NS Recognition Package is to be disbursed by MINDEF for NSMens’ and NSFs’ contributions to Singapore’s defence. First announced in March, it consists of S$100 NS55 credit vouchers and a complimentary one-year SAFRA or HomeTeamNS membership. Here’s all you need to know about the NS55 vouchers.

So who is eligible for the NS55 vouchers? If you are NSmen or NSF as of May 2022, you are then eligible for the NS55 vouchers. Do note that you need to register by 31 December 2022 in order to redeem the complimentary SAFRA or HomeTeamNS membership.

How Do You Claim the Vouchers?

The NS55 credit vouchers, which will be valid for a year, will be disbursed digitally for convenience from July 1 to July 31. You can download the LifeSG mobile application on your mobile phone to redeem the credits in your NS55 vouchers. Here are four easy steps to do so:

  • In your LifeSG mobile application, scroll to “Benefits and Support”
  • Locate “NS55 credits” and tap on “View Details”
  • Tap on “Scan QR code to pay” and scan the QR code provided by the merchant
  • After entering the amount to pay, that’s it! You will have successfully paid for your purchase using the NS55 credits.

For some people, the LifeSG app might not reflect the S$100 NS55 credits yet. Some might not even be able to see the “Benefits and Support” section in the app. But fear not – the credits are issued on a rolling basis, so just be patient.  Eventually, you will get your NS55 vouchers. You should receive the NS55 credit vouchers by the end of July 2022.

‘Life Hack’ to Get the Vouchers in Cash

Sheng Siong Paynow Machine
Source: Sheng Siong, Sengkang West Facebook

Some of you might wonder why are the rewards in the form of NS55 credit vouchers and not cash? Perhaps it is to ensure that recipients will spend the credits with Singapore-registered businesses via the LifeSG app.

Disbursed cash might end up being spent outside Singapore – for instance, being used to pump petrol in Johor Bahru, which is a notorious favourite pastime of Singaporeans.

That could be the reason for the rewards being given in the form of NS55 vouchers instead of cash.

However, it is understandable that having your S$100 NS55 credit vouchers restricted to just a few businesses that accept PayNow transactions is inconvenient. So, users have uncovered a way to ‘convert’ these credits to cash.

Sheng Shiong ATMs apparently can be used to dispense cash from the PayNow option. However, due to a $0.20 convenience fee, users can only withdraw a maximum of $90 from the machine, as withdrawing $100 would require a $100.20 credit instead. The remaining $9.80 can be kept as credits in the LifeSG app for use at other merchants.

So which are the other merchants where you can spend your NS55 credit vouchers?

Full List of Merchants
