Robbie Williams shares why he broke up with Spice Girl Geri Halliwell

Robbie Williams

As the new millennium began, various trends were shaping the music industry. The Spice Girls were at the peak of their success with the hit song “Wannabe,” establishing themselves as a fan phenomenon. Simultaneously, Take That dominated the male perspective in music.

One member of Take That had left the group in 1996 to embark on a solo career, and his music, controversies, and stage performances propelled him to greater fame. Robbie Williams found more success as a solo artist than during his time with the group.

Robbie Williams: A documentary

Fast forward to November 8, when Netflix released the ‘Robbie Williams’ series, offering a 25-year retrospective of the “Rock DJ” singer’s solo career. In this documentary, Williams opens up about his past, including a significant relationship with a Spice Girl.

In the series, Williams speaks about his immense happiness during the relationship but reveals why he was compelled to end it. After just three months together, he made the difficult decision to break up due to disturbing rumours surrounding his partner, which took a toll on his mental well-being and marked the beginning of the end.

Struggling with their own demons

Robbie Williams and Geri Halliwell first crossed paths at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, both struggling with fragile mental health and battling their own personal demons, including issues with alcohol and eating disorders. She grappled with bulimia, while he dealt with anorexia.

During a summer holiday in the south of France in 2000, Williams chose to end their relationship due to a realization that had struck him. “We had a strong connection, enjoyed our time together, and were part of a small, magical moment in a magical place,” he reflects in the Netflix documentary. “I no longer believe it now, but at that time, I did.”

Rise of men avoiding to date woke women, would you date one?

0

woke woman

The rise of men avoiding woke women isn’t as surprising as one might think. Typically, ultra liberal women are the ones making scenes on social media. Furthermore, it appears that most men are generally more conservative than their female counterparts. It is unfortunate that the dating scene has turned this way in the 2020s.

However, there are a lack of sources discussing this matter, and most available are discussing how important it is to date a woke woman. According to sources, the term “irrespective” signifies an action or statement made without regard for other factors. For instance, despite the rising cost of living pressuring many, the government proceeded with Brexit, asserting it wouldn’t have significant economic repercussions.

Some men claim not to date “woke” women, suggesting they perceive themselves as “victims,” irrespective of the validity of their claims. This has ignited debates of the apparent denial of racism and sexism, which some see as gaslighting.

Despite this, most individuals see dating as a preference. If a man refuses to date a woke woman, it is his right to do so. Likewise for a woman who refuses to date a man below 6 feet, most conservatives see both of these as a preference.

Men avoiding to date woke women

X users state that they are avoiding woke women simply due to their complaining about minor inconveniences in life. Furthermore, they are tired of hearing them complaining about their vegan cats and how the “man” is still oppressing them. There still are women being oppressed by men in some parts of the world, but times have changed.

A man claims that he can’t stand being around woke women as they would often start arguments with him. However, another user claims that woke individuals in general tend to not argue with people but instead force their beliefs onto others. If another person refuses to believe them, they would be branded as a bigot.

Another user claims that most men would be happier with a conservative woman as they would raise their children. Regardless, this is a subjective statement as there are conservative women who would prefer to have a job and bring money into their households.

CEO Piyush Gupta: 4 out of 5 DBS disruptions were bug or software-related

0

SINGAPORE: On the Bank’s third-quarter results briefing on Monday, Nov 6, DBS Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Piyush Gupta, revealed that in 2023, four out of five major disruptions were due to bug or software issues. During the briefing on the bank’s third-quarter results, Mr. Gupta emphasized the need for effective change control and addressing bugs as technology systems become more complex. He noted, “The big issue to me is, how do you make sure that you get good change control because the reality is that as you use a lot of different systems and architecture, you will run into bugs,” The Straits Times reports.

Ravi Menon, Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), previously mentioned underlying issues at the bank. Responding to queries about these issues, Mr Gupta stressed the need for deep engineering expertise, as some of the problems were deeply embedded and challenging to detect.

Many recent disruptions were linked to human errors or software bugs in the systems of the bank’s vendors, he said. Collaborating with vendors to resolve these issues is a time-consuming process. Hence, the bank is actively working to strengthen its engineering team’s capabilities, making bug troubleshooting more efficient. The bank aims to introduce a comprehensive set of measures to enhance service availability and expects to have a more robust recovery process by the end of the first quarter of 2024.

One of the key measures involves implementing more rigorous and comprehensive processes to ensure the proper functioning of developed systems. DBS Bank has also allocated a special budget of $80 million to enhance system resiliency. Additionally, the bank intends to decouple its systems, enabling essential services to remain accessible even if specific channels face issues. For example, the bank’s payment service operates across multiple technology platforms, and decoupling its underlying infrastructure will enable customers to continue making payments through the bank’s other digital platforms in the event of a disruption.

Mr Gupta speculated that the surge in bugs may be related to the increased emphasis on software quality globally, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, as more people work from home.

Consequently, DBS Bank has been barred by the country’s central bank from initiating new businesses or making non-essential IT changes for six months, with a focus on strengthening its digital banking services. During this period, it is also prohibited from reducing the number of branches and automated teller machines (ATMs).

When questioned about the potential impact of these measures on the bank’s operations, Mr Gupta clarified that DBS Bank did not have any immediate plans for new ventures and had not reduced its branch or ATM network in recent years. He acknowledged that some new product features and services might need to be deferred temporarily, but he stressed the importance of building resiliency in the bank’s operations during its six-month consolidation period mandated by MAS. /TISG

Measures to help Singaporeans kick their addiction to excess sodium in delicious but unhealthy food

0

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s battle against excess sodium consumption focuses on addressing the unique local context, where sodium intake primarily comes from added condiments when dining out, as highlighted by Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Health Rahayu Mahzam. This revelation was made during a parliamentary session held on Monday, as reported by The Straits Times.

Ms Rahayu also pointed out that unlike many European and Western nations, where processed foods account for the majority of sodium intake, Singaporeans heavily rely on added salt, sauces, and seasonings, including soya sauce, dark sauce, fish sauce, and chilli sauce, when enjoying meals outside their homes. The Government is now gearing up to collaborate with salt and sauce manufacturers to combat this issue effectively.

One key initiative is to engage with food operators and their industry and professional associations, educating them on the importance of reducing salt intake. Furthermore, the Health Promotion Board (HPB) offers grant support to salt and sauce suppliers through the Healthier Ingredient Development Scheme, which encourages the development of lower-sodium alternatives. These alternatives have become readily available, with competitive pricing compared to their regular counterparts.

Ms Rahayu disclosed that the HPB has successfully secured the commitment of 15 major manufacturers and food operators, accounting for over 30% of the retail market for sauces and seasonings and 10% of the food and beverage market share. This commitment aims to enhance the variety and demand for lower-sodium ingredients in the market.

The Government’s efforts come in response to a concerning increase in sodium consumption among Singaporeans.

A 2022 National Population Health Survey revealed that 37% of the population had hypertension in 2021-2022, up from 35.5% in 2019-2020. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung had previously announced that Singapore was exploring regulatory measures to reduce sodium content in food in response to this concerning trend.

While Singapore has studied the practices of countries like Chile and Hungary, which employ warning labels and taxes on high-sodium food items, Ms Rahayu emphasised that the Republic aims to adopt a unique approach suited to its specific context. Singapore’s Nutri-Grade nutrition labelling system, which rates the healthiness of sugary drinks from A to D, has effectively reduced sugar consumption without warning labels, and Ms Rahayu believes that a similar strategy could be effective in reducing sodium intake.

Ms Rahayu also mentioned that these measures to curb excessive sodium intake would be rolled out in phases to allow operators and providers time to adapt. Engaging with stakeholders, including hawkers, restaurants, caterers, and chefs, is critical in promoting the adoption of lower-sodium ingredients. It will involve explaining the importance of reducing sodium intake, introducing lower-sodium options, and even providing samples for these stakeholders to try. Additionally, they will help educate the public about the nature of salt as an acquired taste, which can hinder the appreciation of other natural ingredients.

To address the pressing issue of excessive sodium consumption in Singapore, the government is taking action, but what can you do to lead a healthier, “less salty” life?

In CNA’s Heart of the Matter Podcast, host Steven Chia had a conversation with three guests: Dr Kalpana Bhaskaran, who is the President of the Singapore Nutrition and Dietetics Association, Candy Goh, a Clinical Dietitian at Parkway MediCentre, and Terence Koh, a father who achieved an incredible feat by losing 35 kilograms in just eight months, for the sake of his newborn son.

The central question the podcast addresses is whether a food paradise like Singapore can offer delicious yet less salty food, especially considering the busy lifestyles Singaporeans lead.

To sum up how you can avoid excessive salt consumption in your diet, here are 10 things the experts have suggested:

  1. Choose dishes with less sodium content when eating out.
  2. Opt for stir-fried, roasted, or grilled dishes, which typically contain less oil.
  3. Enhance flavours with natural herbs and spices instead of salt.
  4. Reduce or eliminate processed foods from your diet.
  5. Avoid sugar-sweetened beverages.
  6. Incorporate more vegetables and fruits into your meals.
  7. Choose lean meats and prepare them with less oil and salt.
  8. Mix brown rice with white rice to get used to the taste of whole grains.
  9. Use food tracking apps to monitor your sodium and calorie intake.
  10. Avoid crash diets. Be consistent with your healthy eating habits and make gradual changes to adjust your taste preferences.

As Clinical Dietician Candy Goh mentioned, “Start small, try and avoid doing a whole overhaul to your diet.” /TISG

AI may impact high-skilled professional jobs the most in SG

SINGAPORE: Contrary to conventional thinking that low and middle-skilled jobs are first in line to be affected by artificial intelligence (AI), a new study shows that it is high-skilled professional jobs in prime digital hubs that may be impacted the most by the rising technology.

The results from a four-year-long study from 2019 to 2023 of AI adoption patterns in numerous hubs, including Silicon Valley, Singapore, and London, were discussed last week at the Digital Futures of Work Global Conference 2023. They showed that AI-driven corporate innovation targets high-skilled professional work, with domain skills like consulting and marketing and tasks such as decision-making being put through “cognitive capture.”

This process, which includes automation, standardization, and distribution, uses AI to copy how people’s minds read structured documents, reported Yahoo! Finance on Monday (Nov 6). Professor Phillip Brown, the Director of the Digital Futures of Work Research Programme and a Distinguished Research Professor from Cardiff University, said, ”Societal leaders must ensure that the right questions about AI and the future of work are being asked and adapted accordingly.

Read also: Ravi Menon: AI can help with surveillance against money laundering

In Singapore, the study found that innovation at the corporate level is being applied to jobs for professionals with high levels of education and training, as well as professional experience and judgement. Field engineering services, curriculum design and consultancy services, and credit decision-making are among the jobs where tasks are undergoing automation, standardization, and redistribution.

Yahoo! Finance pointed out that it may be inferred from the study that cognitive capture could decrease the demand for professional labour. Data from 4,218 resident job holders who participated in polls in 2021 and 2022 show that technological changes are advantageous for managerial roles but carry risks for professional roles while having only a small impact on the jobs of other workers.

The study noted that collaboration must take place between public and private sectors, as well as individuals, to make sure that innovations to AI, of which more are certain to come, should be sustainable and beneficial to everyone.

The use of AI technologies to make professional work more cost-efficient is evident. When coupled with existing data that technological change has been weakening professional jobs and not enhancing other types of work, it underlines the pressing need that we manage the AI transition more deliberately towards shared prosperity,” said Sahara Sadik, the Assistant Director for Research at  Institute for Adult Learning (IAL), as well as the Deputy Director of the Digital Futures of Work Research Programme.

Chia Ying, senior researcher at IAL, said,  “This has implications on the learning they will be motivated to seek. The use of AI technologies to enhance jobs, skills, and learning needs to be pursued more decisively.” /TISG

Tenant’s landlord excessively burns incense and takes renter’s food & toiletries without permission

SINGAPORE: A tenant who says he’s facing a “unique and challenging situation” with his landlord sought advice online. He would like to just move out but fears that this would break his tenancy agreement and adds that he can’t afford to lose his deposit.

A man who goes by Kabesang Tales on Facebook described his difficulties in the place he rents through a post on the COMPLAINT SINGAPORE Facebook page on Sunday (Nov 5). He wrote that the “concerning issues” he deals with regularly affect his daily life.

“My landlord’s excessive incense use, particularly during late-night rituals, leads to smoke seeping into my room and causing me to feel dizzy upon waking. These rituals involve some truly unconventional behavior (as they claim they are mediums), like one person getting ‘possessed’ and speaking like a baby, accompanied by the tossing something like wooden object onto the floor, sometimes as late as 2 AM.”

Because his landlord burns incense even when his clothes are drying, the smell has now clung to his clothes, which he finds “incredibly disrespectful and insensitive.”

The renter added that the landlord also helps himself to the renter’s canned food or other items in the refrigerator without asking for permission, as well as the toiletries he stores in the bathroom. As a result, he now keeps all his possessions inside his room.

He added that the landlord keeps his dirty clothes in the washing machine, which he uses as a hamper. When the renter needs to use it, he must still ask the landlord to take them out first.

“I asked if I can just move out because I’m really uncomfortable with this situation, but they claim it would forfeit my deposit.

I feel like this should not be the treatment a paying tenant should have to endure. I’d love to hear from anyone who has dealt with challenging landlord situations, is familiar with tenant rights in Singapore, or has any insights to offer. How did you handle similar issues? What advice can you provide? Have you experienced anything along these lines?” the tenant asked.

Some commenters advised the renter to contact the agent who had helped him to procure the room, but the renter replied, “Landlord had issue with the agent and did not get any cut when I moved in. Agent will not be helping.”

Others encouraged him to just move out even if it meant forfeiting the deposit, saying his mental health was worth preserving and that the stress he faced daily wasn’t worth it.

In reply to one commenter, the renter said that he can give a notice that he is moving out after five months, and he is now on his fourth month of staying at the place. Netizens then encouraged him to stick it out till then but to look for a new place as soon as possible. The Independent Singapore has reached out to the renter for further comment or update. /TISG

Biden proposes new student debt relief plan

Biden

The Biden administration is proposing a new student debt relief plan for those who don’t qualify for loan forgiveness.

The National Foundation for Credit Counseling’s Bruce McClary said, “This is the administration taking another stab at offering student loan forgiveness to a large number of student borrowers, many of whom have been struggling for years to repay the debt that they owe.”

According to the Department of Education four categories qualify:

  • Those with a loan balance that exceeds the original amount that was borrowed
  • Those whose loans were taken more than 25 years ago
  • Those with loans that were taken as part of their career enhancement that led to “unreasonable debt loads or insufficient earnings.”
  • Those who are eligible for forgiveness under other repayment plans but have not applied for it.

The new Biden plan

This aid is part of the $127 billion in loan forgiveness initiated by the Biden administration. McClary said that people should keep a close eye on their accounts and make sure all their information is up to date.

“This is especially critical right now, as we just exited this long period of administrative forbearance where people have been able to skip payments. And it’s one of those things where if it’s out of sight, it’s out of mind. If your servicer doesn’t know how to contact you, you could be missing out on some really important information, just like this information about whether or not you may qualify for forgiveness under the new program.”

McClary also warned of scam emails. He said that you should contact your servicer instead of responding directly to any email.

Details about how much borrowers can see from the proposal are yet to be finalized.

Loan repayments

Student loan repayments were resumed last month after a three year pause due to the pandemic. The Supreme Court however blocked President Biden’s plan to erase up to $20,000 in student debt for borrowers.

The resumption of payments has caused much financial hardship for Americans with some resorting to GoFundMe for help. The number of crowdfunding campaigns on GoFundMe which is tied to college loans has gone up 40%.

According to a survey in August from Credit Karma, half of student loan borrowers say they have had to choose between making loan payments when the forbearance period ended and covering basic expenses like rent and food. Food banks have also reported an increase in requests for help after the student loan payments have resumed.

Biden lags behind Trump in key swing states, new poll reveals

0

TRUMP, swing states

As the United States gears up for the 2024 election, Democratic President Joe Biden lags behind Republican frontrunner Donald Trump in five of the six pivotal battleground states, according to polls conducted by the New York Times and Siena College. These findings from the swing states come amid growing concerns about Biden’s age and dissatisfaction with his handling of the economy.

Poll: Biden lags behind Trump

Exactly one year before the election, the polls deliver a striking verdict: Trump, who is vying for his party’s 2024 nomination in a bid to reclaim the presidency, currently holds the lead in five critical states—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, Biden maintains an edge in Wisconsin, the sole state where he leads, as a stark contrast to the outcome in 2020 when Biden clinched victory in all six states.

2024 Election is a fierce battle

In a stunning reversal of fortunes, Trump has surged to an average lead of 48% to 44% in these battleground states, marking a shift from the 2020 results. These findings indicate that the 2024 election is poised to be a fierce and closely contested battle.

While national popular vote polls have consistently depicted a neck-and-neck race between Biden and Trump, the ultimate outcome of presidential elections hinges on the results in a select group of swing states. Biden’s victories in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, all of which Trump had carried in 2016, were pivotal in securing his triumph in 2020.

Biden vs. Trump: Highly Competitive Showdown

As the electoral countdown begins, the question looms: Can Biden secure these critical states once again to clinch re-election, or will Trump’s resurgence in these battlegrounds pave the way for his return to the White House? With the nation’s political landscape poised for another seismic shift, the 2024 election is a closely watched and highly competitive showdown.

Who will win in the end?

South African leader claims rugby is not a “White person’s” sport even though it was invented by a White man

0

South Africa is going through a radical phase where their leaders are making bold statements towards 7.7% of their country. This 7.7% are the White people of South Africa, and it is shocking to see leaders casually mocking White people. Julius Malema claims that rugby is not a White person’s sport, even though it was literally invented by a White person.

According to IOL, Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has called for the dismantling of the South African Rugby National Team, the Springboks, which he views as a symbol of white supremacy. Malema criticized the team’s emblem and apartheid-era colors, advocating for symbols that represent South Africa’s democracy.

Furthermore, he clarified that his objection is not to rugby as a sport but to the current representation. Malema called for a name, colors, and emblem change that aligns with the nation’s interests rather than promoting “white supremacy.” He expressed his preference for supporting Bafana Bafana and attributed their struggles to a lack of support and sponsorship compared to well-funded “white” teams.

In a twist of irony, William Webb Ellis was the inventor of the sport. However, there are claims that he did not invent it, and there are a number of complications when it comes to the discussion of this.

South African leader claims rugby is not a “White person’s” sport

Following that, it seems that South Africans are calling Julius Malema out for his speech. The X user alleges that the politician is brave enough to give anti-White speeches while at the same time begging wealthy White benefactors for money. However, this is a claim made by an X user and it is unclear whether this is true or not.

Other X users state that the politician should not invoke hate towards a certain group of people for political gain. In addition to this, users state that they are going to claim other inventions made by White people later on. It is sad to see people fighting each other based on the colour of their skin.

Many agree that South Africa does not have a good image of themselves when they have politicians openly talking like this about their own citizens. Regardless, there are plenty of other things for politicians to talk about, but it seems that they prefer to amplify the racial card the most.
