First COE bidding for Nov 2023: Category B down by S$40K

SINGAPORE: In the first COE bidding for Nov 2023, significant shifts were observed in premiums across various vehicle categories, according to data released on Nov 8 from the One Motoring site. Particularly noteworthy are the changes in Category B, which will surely grab the attention of industry enthusiasts and consumers alike.

Category A, covering cars with engine capacity up to 1600cc or 130bhp and EVs with up to 110kW, experienced a decrease in premium by S$10,311, closing at S$95,689. Category B, which includes cars above 1600cc or 130bhp and EVs with more than 110kW, saw a substantial premium decrease of S$40,000, closing at S$110,001.

Goods vehicles and buses in Category C experienced a premium decrease of S$6,789, closing at S$78,001, with 281 bids for 190 COEs. The adjustment in COE supply played a crucial role in stabilizing prices, according to industry insiders.

Category D, representing motorcycles, witnessed a premium decrease of S$312, closing at S$10,889, with 630 bids for 520 COEs. The recalibration of COE supply, including unallocated COEs from previous bidding exercises, contributed to this correction.

For Category E, covering all vehicles except motorcycles, there was a significant premium decrease of S$32,993, closing at S$125,011, with 227 bids for 141 COEs. The adjustments in COE supply and market dynamics played a pivotal role in this correction.

Breaking down the bidding exercise data:

  • Category A received 1,165 bids, with 915 successful and 250 unsuccessful bids.
  • Category B had 830 bids, 631 successful, and 199 unsuccessful bids.
  • Category C received 281 bids, 186 successful and 95 unsuccessful bids.
  • Category D had 630 bids, 512 successful and 118 unsuccessful bids.
  • Category E saw 227 bids, 136 successful and 91 unsuccessful bids.

Jason Lim, managing director for BMW authorised agent Eurokars Auto, noted that the increased COE supply was a welcome relief for the market, stating, “Increased COE supply definitely helped; it was welcome news. Also, in the few weeks after Cars@Expo, it was relatively quiet on the retail front. And then probably, consumers adopted a wait-and-see approach to see where this COE price correction would go.”

Nicholas Wong, general manager of Honda authorised agent Kah Motor, also emphasized the impact of demand and supply on COE prices. Wong stated that it took three adjustments in COE supply to bring prices under control, especially for Category B, which faced six rounds of increases, as reported by Motorist.

These results indicate a positive response to the increased supply and market adjustments, aligning with the expectations of industry experts. As consumers and industry players navigate these changes, how the COE market will evolve in the coming months remains to be seen.

Man says he was planning to propose, but his GF of 5 years left him

SINGAPORE: A heartbroken man took to social media because his girlfriend of five years left him for someone else. In an anonymous post to popular confessions page NUSWhispers, the man said that he was in the relationship for about 2006 days, or five years. He added that he was planning to propose to his girlfriend.

“I still remember the day I first saw her, our first date, the first time we held hands. The bits and pieces of us we leave behind in our rooms or belongings. All these memories are now reduced to objects. How does one move on from this when one gets blindsided by it? When they are told it would be better and healthier for them to move on. When they know their partner is already contemplating on pursuing something with someone else”, he wrote. In his post, he wondered if it was his fault that he took too long before proposing.

He also thought that their relationship would be able to stand the test of time. “My friends tell me to not lose confidence in myself and that she just decided she wanted something else. Sound advice though a tough pill to swallow. I believe nothing would change her mind anymore but I hope this reaches her since she might come across this”, the man wrote.

At the end of his post, he left a note for his ex-girlfriend. He wished her the best and thanked her for their years together. Netizens who commented on the post advised him: “The OP needs to understand some facts. Focus on your career and the women will come. A man who is successful in his career and takes responsibility on his own health and fitness is attractive to women. She decided to pursue someone else because she can’t see any future in you. Nothing about proposal in specific. If she sees a future, she won’t mind waiting for that. And this future is usually the fundamental male achievement like the ones i mentioned. And on the other hand, you are right that a Good girl will go through thick and thin with you. So seeing through her predilections early will save you a massive load of heartbreaks in future. Welcome to singlehood; The state better than being with the wrong person”.

Another added: “There would have been signs in the 5 years but you got comfortable and took her for granted that she was going to wait around a few more years. That’s why you feel blindsided. But I’m sure she would have indicated to you in those 5 years. Maybe even after 5 years also she see you got no future. She just got sick of waiting. No woman should be waiting that long for a man to commit to her. She made the right choice to move on. 5 years is a long time”.

Contractual AI engineers in SG are paid significantly more than permanent staff

SINGAPORE: As it turns out, temporary Artificial Intelligence (AI) developers are making good money in Singapore. A recently released salary survey from Morgan McKinley shows that they earn more than their peers who have landed permanent positions, as pointed out on Wednesday (Nov 8).

Here’s another thing: the more experience you have as an AI engineer, the bigger your salary gets. Senior staff engineers with five to 10 years of experience can earn between S$100,00 to S$160,000 in temporary positions. Those hired for permanent positions earn between S$40,000 and S$90,000 yearly.

For individuals with 10 to 15 years of experience, contractual workers earn between S$144,00 and S$220,000, while permanent workers take home between S$90,000 and S$170,000 annually. Temporary AI developers with over 15 years of experience may earn a whopping S$200,00 to S$280,000 per year, while those who take permanent positions may earn between S$140,000 and S$220,000 a year.

“This phenomenon isn’t exclusive to AI; UI and UX is another egregious example, but AI salaries show the widest disparity,” says efinancialcareers.com

Of course, demand may trump supply in this case. As a concept, AI has been around for at least a century and took great strides in the 1950s. But the AI boom in the 1980s was followed by an “AI winter” from 1987 to 1993, a time of low private and public interest and, perhaps more importantly, funding.

But winter was followed by spring, as these things go, especially after world chess champion Gary Kasparov was defeated by IBM-developed Deep Blue in 1997. By the mid-2000s, Twitter, Facebook, and Netflix began using AI as part of user experience (UX) and advertising algorithms, and 2011 saw the birth of Siri.

Last week, a new study showed that contrary to conventional thinking that low and middle-skilled jobs are first in line to be affected by artificial intelligence (AI), high-skilled professional jobs in prime digital hubs may be impacted the most by the rising technology.

The results from a four-year-long study from 2019 to 2022 of AI adoption patterns in numerous hubs, including Silicon Valley, Singapore, and London, were discussed at the Digital Futures of Work Global Conference 2023. They showed that AI-driven corporate innovation targets high-skilled professional work, with domain skills like consulting and marketing and tasks such as decision-making being put through “cognitive capture.”

35yo man unemployed for 7 months says he applied over 200 jobs

SINGAPORE: A 35-year-old man who had been unemployed for seven months took to social media asking others to advise on his job-hunting strategy. In an anonymous post to popular confessions page NUSWhispers, the man said he was not a Singaporean. He wrote: “I dedicated numerous hours every day to job applications. The time spent editing my resume and writing cover letters was incredibly extensive. I even recorded my applications in an Excel sheet, totalling just over 200. Despite holding a PhD in life sciences from a local university and having 3 years of work experience, I found it deeply disheartening not to receive a single job offer in about six months”.

He added that out of more than 200 applications, he was called only for five job interviews, “all of which I believe I performed extremely well in. The challenges arose due to factors such as retrenchment, the closure of biotech start-ups, switch in government’s plan for the nation, and funding cuts across research institutes. Moreover, there have been restrictions on hiring foreigners over the past 6-7 months, as observed from my foreign friends who also struggled to find jobs in Singapore”, he wrote.

The man added that after three months of job hunting, he broadened his search to include “opportunities slightly outside my expertise, including non-research roles. About three months later, I progressed through two rounds of interviews for a position I’m not particularly interested in. I decided to accept it to sustain myself financially, planning to explore better opportunities in research later on. I couldn’t afford to stay unemployed any longer, so I opted for this job that could provide income, even if it wasn’t my ideal choice”.

Because of this choice, the man said that some of his friends criticised him for taking a job meant for more qualified candidates. “They argued that these candidates might be more passionate and productive, thus it would be better for the company to hire them instead. Others questioned why I would settle for a job unsuited to my interests, implying that it would lead me back to square one if I quit after a few months. They also questioned the value of learning new skills if I wouldn’t use them in the long run when I returned to research”.

After hearing his friends out, the man wrote that he understood where they were coming from but asked if he was wrong for taking a job out of necessity. “I underwent tertiary education, spent months applying for jobs, put extensive effort into interview preparations, and went through the formal hiring process like any other candidate. Why am I wrong for securing a job that isn’t my primary interest? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated”, the man wrote.

One netizen gave him a detailed response and said: “In workplace hiring, there is a term we used this term sometimes, which is “overqualified”. Not many hiring managers would hire a PhD for a job meant for just degree holders, or any overqualified candidate for the simple reason of “threat”. These hiring managers felt threatened esp if they always fear their position is not secure. So I am not at all surprised by the lack of interviews. Second pt is, yes u r right, the foreigner quota is an issue. BUT it is not something new. So it could be a supply demand issue where more candidates are available now. So between a foreigner and a local, companies have to consciously leave the quota for positions which are lack of local talent. Third pt, there is absolutely nothing wrong with you taking the job. You do need to feed yourself. N having a CV with a big unemployment gap is nt something desirable in the job market. BUT here is the catch, u might hv to endure the current lower pay for a period of 4-5 years, assuming you could not find something back to your previous salary. Well, at least you can feed yourself. Lastly, I think you might want to consider asking ard your BioTech/life science industry friends and see where the research institutes (or jobs meant for PhDs) have moved to, becos it sounds like those establishments could be moving out of Singapore. If so,it would be better for you to follow suit in order to pursue a similar path. If u insist in staying in Singapore, your current might be the viable path”.  /TISG

Voters in Ohio state pass ballot enshrining abortion rights

0

Ohio

Voters in Ohio have voted to add abortion rights to their state constitution. The bill called Issue 1 had a 57% vote.

The issue has been in contention ever since the United States Supreme Court overturned the landmark abortion case Roe v Wade last year which made 16 states ban nearly all types of abortions.

The polls closed on November 7 as a watch party gathered in downtown Columbus. The watch party was hosted by the Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights. The organisation’s co-chair Lauren Blauvelt gave a speech saying, “Abortion is healthcare,” to resounding applause from the public.

United States President Joe Biden commended the journey of Issue 1 and called on Congress to pass legislation to protect abortion rights across the United States.

Ohio voters decide

“Ohioans and voters across the country rejected attempts by Maga Republican elected officials to impose extreme abortion bans that put the health and lives of women in jeopardy, force women to travel hundreds of miles for care, and threaten to criminalize doctors and nurses for providing the healthcare that their patients need and that they are trained to provide,” said Biden.

The general feeling was one of elation as locals gathered at the venue where the watch party was.

Co-founder of Ohio Physicians for Reproductive Rights Dr Marcela Azevedo said that she had a patient who wasn’t able to get care for her cancer simply because of the ban on abortion.

“We’re going to bed knowing that we own our own bodies,” she said.

The amendment will be reflected in the state’s constitution. It will allow any individual to have the right to reproductive medical treatment which includes abortion, contraception and miscarriage care. The amendment will come into effect on December 7.

Despite the win, Ohio Republicans who control the legislature and governorship in the state Sadi they would introduce new ballot measures in response to Issue 1.

Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, Jason Stephens told his supporters that there are multiple paths we will explore to continue to protect innocent life.

Democrats seize full control of Virginia legislature

0

Democrats

Democrats clinched complete control of Virginia’s legislature, sending ripples across the political landscape as they secured the state Senate and flipped the state House in a bellwether contest that could foreshadow the 2024 electoral landscape.

This resounding victory for Democrats signifies a significant political shift just two years after Republicans wrested control of the state’s lower chamber.

Quo vadis, Governor Glenn Youngkin?

It serves as a direct rebuke to GOP Governor Glenn Youngkin, who had invested substantial resources in his bid to secure Republican dominance over Virginia’s state government. Democrats now hold the power to thwart Youngkin’s agenda including his efforts to enact a 15-week abortion ban.

 High-stakes legislative battle

The stakes were high in this fierce battle, with all 140 state legislative seats up for grabs. However, the pivotal showdown boiled down to fewer than 20 seats across both chambers.

The triumphant Democrats

With Democrats emerging victorious, Virginia is poised for a divided government for at least two years. Governor Youngkin, who was not on the ballot in this election, will remain in office until 2025.

In addition to reshaping Virginia’s political landscape, this outcome could have a far-reaching impact on the national stage. Some Republican donors, who have expressed reservations about former President Donald Trump, may be less inclined to urge Youngkin to make a last-minute entry into the 2024 presidential race.

The battle for Virginia was marked by a strong Democratic emphasis on reproductive rights, particularly the preservation of abortion access. Virginia stands as one of the last Southern states where such access is available.

While the state may not be a battleground in the presidential race, Tuesday’s triumph signals the enduring strength of Democrats, particularly in crucial suburban areas nationwide. This victory reverberates as a testament to the party’s ability to connect with voters and secure victories on the electoral map.

Megan Fox had been in ‘bad relationships’ with ‘very famous people’

0

fox, Megan Fox

Megan Fox recently spoke openly about her challenging dating history, describing it as “horrific.” The “Transformers” actress, who is engaged to Machine Gun Kelly, discussed her experiences with “bad relationships” involving “very famous” individuals during an interview on “Good Morning America.”

She mentioned, “Throughout my life, I have been in at least one physically bad relationship and several psychologically bad relationships.” While she didn’t disclose the names of the people she was referring to, it’s worth noting that she was previously married to Brian Austin Green and had romantic connections with actors Shia LeBeouf and David Gallagher.

Experience with assault

In her new collection of poems titled “Pretty Boys Are Poisonous,” Megan Fox appeared to allude to her experiences with assault, although she emphasized that these poems shouldn’t be viewed as a memoir or exposé. She deliberately left out certain aspects of her trauma to prevent readers from connecting the dots to her personal life.

In her poems, she dedicated several to her fiancé, whom she credited with encouraging her to publish the book. The poems make references to a “32-year-old narcissist” and a “true love, twin flame,” which presumably refer to Machine Gun Kelly. She also touched on the grief she experienced from a miscarriage in poems titled “I” and “II.”

Relationship with MGK

Fox and MGK, who became engaged in January 2022, have neither confirmed nor denied the rumors about the miscarriage. However, Machine Gun Kelly released a song called “Twin Flame” in March 2022, featuring a heartbeat and lyrics like “I’ll see you in my dreams” and “Now I have to set you free.”

Megan Fox has three children with her ex-husband, Brian Austin Green, with whom she was married from 2010 to 2019.

How environmental concerns will impact the 2024 race

0

environmental

The 2024 presidential election looms and environmental concerns are taking center stage. Climate change, pollution, and conservation become defining issues in American politics. How will these environmental concerns influence the 2024 elections?

Environmental Concerns and Platforms

The 2024 race is expected to feature candidates who will make environmental platforms an element of their campaigns.

Climate Change Mitigation – A focus on reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to renewable energy sources. At the forefront will be the support of clean energy jobs, electric vehicle infrastructure policies, and international climate agreements.

Conservation and Biodiversity – Protecting natural habitats and preserving biodiversity will resonate with voters. Policies to safeguard national parks, protect endangered species, and promote sustainable land use will be discussed.

Sustainable Practices – Voters are interested in policies that promote recycling, waste reduction, and sustainable agriculture. Candidates should propose initiatives that incentivize businesses to adopt environmentally friendly practices.

The Swing States

Environmental concerns are not uniform across the nation. Swing states with specific environmental challenges will play a crucial role in the 2024 presidential race outcomes.

Florida: Rising sea levels and increased hurricane activity threaten Florida’s coastal communities. Candidates must articulate plans to combat climate change effects, and invest in resilient infrastructure.

Rust Belt States: The transition to clean energy is a hot-button issue. Presidential hopefuls must offer solutions ensuring a just transition for workers while promoting sustainable energy.

Western States: California and Nevada are grappling with drought and wildfires. Voters are looking for candidates with comprehensive plans to manage water resources and combat the increasing frequency of wildfires.

Call for Serious Action

Candidates will need to offer policies to address these issues and secure the support of a nation facing the reality of a planet in peril. The 2024 election is a crucial moment with the potential to reshape the future of environmental policy in the United States.

M’sian MP Syed Saddiq vows to clear his name after corruption verdict

SINGAPORE: Malaysian Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, 30, who was found guilty by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on four charges of criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property and money laundering, said that he would clear his name after the verdict was announced on Thursday (Nov 9).

Syed Saddiq, a member of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) and an MP for Maur since 2018, was sentenced to seven years in jail, two strokes of the cane, and fined RM10 million (S$2.9 million). He is the first politician to face a caning sentence, reported the New Straits Times.

The MP, who had served as Malaysia’s Minister of Youth and Sports from 2018 to 2020 and had once been the head of the youth wing of the Bersatu party, left Bersatu in 2020 to form his own party, MUDA. In September, MUDA broke away from the coalition of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim because of concerns over graft.

He was charged with abetting an ex-Bersatu official with misappropriating 1 million ringgit (S$289,261.62) in funds for the youth wing in March 2020. At the time, Bersatu was still in power.

In a statement after the verdict was read, the former Minister said, “Members of the press, family, and friends, as a Malaysian, as Syed Saddiq, I respect the dicision of the High Court and the High Court judge, and with that respect, comes a sense of consistency in defending the institution of justice.”

He added that he was not making a statement “in order to lambast, condemn, or disrepute the institution of justice.

In the end, I am like any other Malaysian and should be judged like any other Malaysian. And on this matter, after discussion with my esteemed colleagues and lawyers, we firmly believe that there is a strong case to be found in the Court of Appeal to clear my name. And I still insist that the best place to clear my name will be the court of law, and we look forward to filing the appeal immediately.”

He added that to “make Malaysia a great country”, it’s necessary to build strong institutions that outlast personalities and partisanship. “But in order to be that group of leaders, you have to be whiter than white. And I know the position which I’m in today, and that’s why I have personally made up my mind on what I intend to do with regard to my position as the President of MUDA.”

Syed Saddiq will be allowed to continue in his role as an MP despite the charges filed against him, and the High Court has given him a stay of execution pending his appeal. /TISG

Marathoner Ashley Liew performs CPR on motorcyclist injured in ECP accident

SINGAPORE: An accident involving a minibus, lorry, and a motorcycle occurred along the East Coast Parkway (ECP) on Wednesday morning (Nov 8). The minibus braked suddenly after a man jumped out of it. This caused the lorry to abruptly brake as well, and the motorcyclist who had been following the lorry ended up hitting the lorry.

Other motorists later came to the aid of the motorcyclist. A nurse, Ms Lynn Long-Yam, along with marathoner Ashley Liew, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the motorcyclist, while Mr Liew’s wife, Ms Sandra Faustina, stayed on the phone with emergency services.

When an ambulance arrived, the motorcyclist was brought unconscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Unfortunately, the 27-year-old man later succumbed to his inquiries and died.

The 38-year-old man who jumped out of the minibus is in police custody and is assisting with investigations. The accident occurred before the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway exit on the ECP towards Marina Coastal Expressway at around 11:05 am. The Singapore Civil Defence Force received a call for assistance shortly afterwards.

Ms Long-Yam, who works at Active Global Respite Care, said the man was unresponsive when she got to him. “I called out to him, I tried to pat him on the shoulder because he was lying on his left side, almost face down,” she is quoted in CNA as saying.

Mr Liew and Ms Faustina arrived just a few minutes afterwards, and when they turned the motorcyclist over to perform CPR, they saw that his wrist was broken and that he was bleeding from a head injury.

They were later joined by a staff member from Tan Tock Seng Hospital, who also helped them check on the injured man. While waiting for an ambulance to arrive, Ms Long-Yam and Mr Liew continued to perform CPR on the motorcyclist.

CNA reports that the mini-bus driver said 15 to 20 minutes had passed before people on the ECP stopped to help out.

The nurse and the marathoner expressed concerns when they heard this, as the window of time immediately after an accident is crucial to a person’s life. “Those precious 15, 30 minutes could be better utilised,” Mr Liew said.

CNA further reported that Ms Long-Yam and the Liews had offered condolences to the motorcyclist’s family, whom they contacted after the accident. They learned that the man left behind a wife who was pregnant. /TISG
