Comedian Rishi Budhrani refers to PA banner calling for ‘litter-free’ Deepavali; joking, he then called for ‘air pollution-free’ Hungry Ghost Festival and ‘indiscriminate parking-free’ Hari Raya

SINGAPORE: A Deepavali banner in Mountbatten SMC calling for residents to  “keep our celebrations litter free” sparked much outrage online at its insensitivity and timing. Responding, local comedian Rishi Budhrani posted a video on social media wondering if there would be ‘indiscriminate parking-free’ Hari Raya and ‘air pollution-free’ Hungry Ghost Festival banners as well.

Since the banners were a Residents’ Network (RN) initiative, which is under the People’s Association, Mr Budhrani’s video mimicked an RN meeting where committee members looked at suggestions on how to wish fellow residents during their festivals “while still maintaining Singapore’s image as a clean-and-green and law-abiding nation”. Along with a ‘litter-free Deepavali’, he joked about an ‘indiscriminate parking-free Hari Raya’, an ‘air pollution-free Hungry Ghost Festival’, a ‘noise-free Christmas’, and an ‘illegal gambling-free Chinese New Year’.

On Nov 8, the two banners put up in Mountbatten were photographed and shared on Facebook by Susiilaa Shanmugam. She said that while the message appears to have a “positive intent”, it’s used at a “wrong time.” She also asked if the same message was used during other festivals.

Several other netizens who commented on her post also said that the message could be seen as insensitive. She took issue with the banner asking residents to clean up after celebrations. Ms Shanmugam wrote: “Though the message appears to have a positive intent, it is being used at a very wrong time, given festivals are a time when those who have endured a tumultuous time come together as one to unite with their family and friends”.

“I hope to see the same message for the coming Chinese New Year”, she added, asking in her post if such a message was issued during Chinese New Year or the Hungry Ghost Festival.

People’s Action Party (PAP) MP Lim Biow Chuan, representing Mountbatten SMC, who also appeared in one of the banners, gave instructions to take down a Deepavali-related banner that “gave rise to a misunderstanding”. Mr Lim said that the photo of the banners is genuine and not artificially manipulated or generated. He explained that the People’s Association (PA) put up the Deepavali festive greeting banners on his behalf. However, the contractor who put up the banners did not clear the location with the PA staff.

The banners were taken down on Nov 9.

He clarified: “There were several Deepavali festive greeting banners which were put up on my behalf by PA. But there is only one location where the festive banner and Deepavali were put up together one above the other. The contractor who put up the banners did not clear the location of the banner with the PA staff.”

He also explained the origin of the anti-littering banners and clarified that it is not an initiative of the Marine Parade Town Council (which oversees Mountbatten SMC). Instead, it is a Residents’ Network initiative under the PA.

“The anti-littering banners were an initiative by the Residents’ Network (RN), which had received many complaints about littering of sparklers and wrappings in the parks after Deepavali. They discussed the littering issue with NEA and came up with the idea to remind residents not to litter after the celebrations. The RNs often on their own initiative, take many other targeted initiatives based on Resident’s feedback e.g. undertaking patrols to deter cyclists from riding on a bridge, noise mitigation measures, traffic management measures. This is not an MPTC initiative”, Mr Lim said.

When asked by the media if the anti-littering message was previously included with greetings for other festive occasions, Mr Lim said this is the first year it has happened after receiving feedback from residents, as the other celebrations are usually not carried out at the public park. “I agree that the location of the banners side by side had given rise to misunderstanding. I have given instructions to the PA staff to remove the banner”, he said. Mr Lim added that he had conveyed the “negative feedback” to the NEA, and they will be removing “all the anti-littering banners”.

On Nov 8, Mr Lim also participated in a dance for Deepavali. He posted a video on social media and said: “My grassroots leader took this video for me. Thanks to the enthusiastic dancers for accompanying me for the dance. Dancing is also a good form of exercise. Start of Healthier SG exercise program”.

40-year-old Ubi flat resold for over $1M

0

SINGAPORE: A 39-year-old resale flat was sold for over a million dollars in a record transaction last month. According to information on the Housing and Development Board’s (HDB) website, the executive maisonette was sold last month for $1.06 million, despite its age and the fact that it has a remaining leasehold period of 61 years and seven months.

The unit, located on the 10th to 12th floors of Block 326, Ubi Avenue 1, boasts an area of 146 square meters. The transaction represented a new high for HDB properties in Ubi. The eye-watering price for an almost 40-year-old flat has raised eyebrows as properties with shorter remaining leases typically have lower demand and prices, especially given the limited financing options for older flats.

The million-dollar sale of this flat showcases the enduring appeal of mature areas and their prime locations while highlighting the continued demand for housing and skyrocketing prices for resale flats despite cooling measures.

The sale is one of the most expensive transactions for resale flats this year, after the sale of the 50-year-old jumbo four-room unit in Moh Guan Terrace, which was sold for S$1.5 million in June. Both sales suggest that factors such as size, rarity, and location can outweigh concerns about lease decay, financing restrictions, and the property’s age.

The Moh Guan Terrace property has only over 48 years left on its lease, per HDB’s resale price portal.

Interestingly, Block 50 Moh Guan Terrace – where the unit is located – does not even have an elevator. The block was slated to undergo HDB’s Home Improvement Programme (HIP) and Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) after 2017, but it appears that these plans did not materialize.

The absence of a lift in the block, likely due to architectural constraints, adds another layer of intrigue to the sale, considering that the unit has fetched top dollar and is located on the highest floor.

99.co said that the size and rarity of the flat may justify its exorbitant price. Unlike a standard HDB public housing unit, this particular flat is categorized as an adjoined flat, boasting an expansive floor area of 176 sqm (1,894 sqft).

In comparison, a 4-room HDB Built-to-Order (BTO) flat typically spans 93 sqm (1,001 sqft). The price per square foot (psf) for this unique unit comes to approximately S$792, which falls below the average psf price of S$839 for HDB resale flats in Tiong Bahru this year.

The scarcity of such large units and their prime locations might explain the buyers’ willingness to pay record-breaking sums.

Amid mounting outrage, PAP MP removes Deepavali banners that warned against littering

SINGAPORE: Mountbatten SMC MP Lim Biow Chuan has ordered the removal of banners wishing his constituents a Happy Deepavali after part of the banner, which asked residents to avoid littering, sparked an online uproar.

The first banner said, “Mr Lim Biow Chuan, Advisor to Mountbatten Grassroots Organisations, wishes all Mountbatten residents Happy Deepavali.” A second banner below said, “Wishing our residents Happy Deepavali. Let’s keep our celebrations litter free.” The banner further stated: “Please be sure to bin your litter (used sparklers, packaging, plastics etc.) and leave our public spaces clean.”

The banners outraged Singaporeans of Indian descent, who decried the perceived double standard that banners wishing non-Indian Singaporeans for their respective holidays do not contain such loud anti-littering advice.

One of the voices who raised concerns was Facebook user Susiilaa Shanmugam. Ms Susiilaa wrote: “Thank u for the reminder Sir. Just curious if you have ever used this message during Chinese New Year or Hungry Ghost Festival?”

She added, “Though the message appears to have a positive intent, it is being used at a very wrong time given festivals are a time when those who have endured a tumultuous time come together as one to unite with their family and friends. I hope to see the same message for the coming Chinese New Year.”

Several Singaporeans said that the grassroots organisations (GROs) and the MP may as well have skipped wishing Singaporean Indians a Happy Deepavali, instead of putting up such messages.

Close to 500 Facebook users shared Ms Susiilaa’s post on their own pages. Many echoed her concerns that the banners appear to be targeting Singapore Indians.

A number of more prominent Singaporeans weighed in as well. Veteran journalist PN Balji commented: “Well, it is aimed at Indians. That is obvious.”

Popular television personality and Vasantham channel stalwart Kalai Selvan asked, “Dear Sir, have you ever seen Indians littering your area during Deepavali? You should apply the same rules for all races. Why always target at Indians?” Mr Kalai Selvan added that the MP must have approved the wording of the banner before it was put up.

Facebook user Viknesh Shanmugam left one of the most liked comments. He wrote: “A bit of care and effort to consider the sensitivities involved with the wordings go a long way. We speak much about the integrity of maintaining our multiracial fabric, need to do better than this to walk the talk.”

As the outrage mounted, Mr Lim told Channel 8 news that the banners were put up by the People’s Association’s Residents’ Networks (RNs) in Mountbatten. He asserted that the banners were not an initiative by the Marine Parade Town Council.

He added that the RNs put up such banners because they received many complaints from the public that many sparkler sticks and wrappers were left in the park after previous Deepavali celebrations. After discussions with the National Environment Agency, the RNs proposed hanging banners to remind the public not to litter after the festive celebrations.

Noting that this was the first time such a banner had been hung, Mr Lim told Channel 8 that littering is relatively rare for other holiday celebrations as they are mostly held at home rather than in public parks.

Channel 8 news also reported that notices have also been posted in the ward to remind residents to be responsible when burning incense and paper, including not doing so in the corridors of HDB flats and using incinerators instead.

Mr Lim told the channel that he agreed that the placement of the banners could cause misunderstandings. He said that he had instructed People’s Association staff to remove the banners.

The governing party politician added that the contractor did not confirm the banner’s location with the People’s Association staff, and only one banner was placed together with the banner hung by the People’s Association on his behalf.

Mr Lim did not address this issue on his official Facebook page, but some Singaporeans raised their concerns in his recent posts’ comments section.

One Facebook user, Nandhini Rad, said: “Hi Sir, Thanks for your wonderful wish! It is truly unfortunate that the your banner seem to be placed above National Environment Agency (NEA)’s banner. It would have been nice if you had shared the feedback about this insensitive messaging back to NEA instead of pointing fingers at the contractor or NEA.”

She added, “IF NEA was truly trying to remind residents to keep the environment clean and clean litters – may we also request the same reminder to be put up during hungry ghost festivals and other celebrations? Afterall we are a fair and equal society and I am confident that all races can benefit from such a reminder from time to time – especially so during festive periods.”

In what has been perceived as a needlessly passive-aggressive response by some observers, the MP replied: “1st, the lower banner was not from me. Indeed, i have informed NEA and they have agreed that they will remove the banners on anti-littering. The banner was simply a reminder not to litter. I am sure that you agree that we should not litter.”

Ms Nandhini replied: “Hi Sir, of course I agree that we shouldn’t litter. How else will we maintain our clean and green city? My only grievance is the timing and lack of sensitivity around the messaging. Have there been other posters that say ” Happy Chinese New Year/Hungry Ghost Festival! Please keep our environment litter free?” This one off instance during Deepavali seems like a little insensitive. That’s my concern.

“If NEA wants to wish the community, please go ahead and wish. There is absolutely no need to wish and follow up with a reminder not to litter. The messaging could have been better. I’m also aware this wasn’t your poster but perhaps as a MP for the zone, you could convey this message to National Environment Agency (NEA). I’m sure you would agree that we that we should be fair in our approach to littering and not tie it to a supposed wish/greeting.”

The MP did not reply to her comment at the time.

He disclaimed responsibility for the issue when pressed about it in a separate Facebook comment. He said: “The banners are separate ones. My banner on top is just a festive greeting and does not contain any litter free messages.

“The bottom banner is from NEA/NParks and as a government agency, they are just trying to do their job to remind residents to keep the environment clean while celebrating the festival. The feedback that NEA had received from many other park users is that the park is badly littered after the Deepavali celebrations.

“It is unfortunate that the contractor who placed the 2 banners did not think about the messaging. The contractor did not inform me as to when or where to place the banners. But I had asked that my festive greeting banner be removed so that there is no misunderstanding of my intent – which is simply to wish all Hindus a Happy Deepavali.”

Salary Increments and Pay Raises in Singapore – How Much to Expect in 2024 and the Near Future

Valuechampion mailing list

Despite global economic uncertainties, job prospects in Singapore are looking up, but are your salary increment prospects looking just as promising in 2024 and beyond? Before we delve deeper into the topic, it is good to note that there is a difference between “salary increment” and “pay raise”, even though both are sometimes used interchangeably.

In general, both refer to an increase in the amount of money an employee in Singapore earns, but salary increment typically refers to an increase in an employee’s base average salary after annual performance reviews.

Pay raises, on the other hand, can be given for various reasons, such as increase in cost of living in Singapore, merit-based performance, promotions, increased responsibilities, or market-driven competitive salaries. They are usually more immediate and given when the employer deems appropriate.

In this article, we will take a closer look at the prospects of the average salary increment in Singapore so you can manage your finances more efficiently in the near future.

Outlook for Salary Increment in Various Sectors in Singapore

Even as global economies are navigating through a myriad of challenges in the post-COVID era, the Singapore economy is starting to pick up pace with 0.7% year-on-year as of the third quarter of 2023, up 0.2% compared to previous quarter. This may be a far cry from 2022’s growth performance, but employers in Singapore are remaining optimistic about offering salary increments and pay raises on the whole.

According to a survey by Singapore Business Federation’s (SBF) on manpower and wages, 64% of the 282 businesses surveyed have planned an average salary increment of 6%. In fact, up to 88% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large companies surveyed have already delivered increments in the last 12 months and expect to increase salaries in the next 12 months.

However, varying performance in different industries does have an impact on salary increments amongst Singapore employees. On a more positive note, the Construction, Accommodation and Food Services are expecting higher growth than the previous quarter. Employees in these industries may expect more generous increments than those in Real Estate, Health and Education, and Information and Communications & Professional Services that are shouldering high business costs.

Industry Percentage (%)
Real Estate 100%
Health & Education 80%
Information and Communications and Professional Services 72%
Retail, Hotels and Food and Beverages 70%

Other Services 53%

Logistics and Transportation 41%
Others (such as Arts and Culture and Social Services) 40%

Reportedly, industries like the Finance and Insurance, and Wholesale and Retail Trade are also not delivering forecasted growth. The opportunity for wage hikes for employees in these sectors may be rather remote unless there are unexpected turnarounds in the last quarter of this year.

Tips for Negotiating for a Pay Raise and Salary Increment

If you feel that you have been working long hours and deserve more than what you are currently paid, perhaps it is time to negotiate for a pay raise or salary adjustment that is on par with your effort.

Here are some tips that may help you get remunerated more generously.

Pick the Right Time

Do not put your superior up for a negotiation at the end of a stressful work day, after a project has failed or when the company is going through a financial crisis. Even the most generous boss will not be able to justify a salary increment or pay raise under those circumstances.

A natural time for negotiation is during your annual performance review or after a launch of a successful project. Be sure to research salary trends and salary benchmarks for your role. Such information will help you present your case and demonstrate your value more succinctly.

Highlight Your Achievements and Outstanding Performances

Did you meet your Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) with flying colours? Did you overachieve sales quota by leaps and bounds? These are important highlights that can justify a pay raise.

It is also essential to present any additional value that you bring to the company and articulate your commitment to take on new projects that will help the organisation grow. Your dedication to your work not only puts you in a favourable light but also assures your superior that you are willing to grow with the company in the long run.

Understand The Company’s Constraints

Even if you have substantial merits to justify a wage adjustment, you must be prepared to get rejected due to no fault of yours. Some companies in Singapore do have corporate salary guidelines or constraints like temporary pay freeze, salary caps or strict budget allocations that prevent them from giving you a pay raise or salary increment.

When this happens, consider other alternatives that may improve your overall remuneration package. Performance-based bonus or profit-sharing arrangements are some common compensation methods used to reward sales roles.

SG housing market expected to slow down, finally!

0

SINGAPORE: Is the end in sight for the red-hot property market in Singapore? Morgan Stanley analysts seem to think so due to a current supply and demand imbalance, as well as higher stamp duties imposed earlier this year that may well discourage non-Singaporean home buyers, reported Bloomberg on Thursday (Nov 9).

The country has just seen a seven-year-long rally in private home prices, the longest stretch in the past four decades. And now, analysts from US-based financial services company Morgan Stanley are saying it’s about to finally slow down, even as housing prices went up in the third quarter of the year. But while more land than in the past ten years in Singapore is being put up for sale, the number of investors is not expected to increase but to decrease.

Morgan Stanley analysts expect a 3 per cent decrease in home prices next year, adding that they foresee this to last for the next two years.

On a related note, residential rental prices, which went up by 15 per cent this year, are also expected to decrease by as much as 10 per cent next year.  And in the event of a crisis, or should the macro-economy worsen, rental prices may go down even more, said Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Ken Foong earlier this week.

With the end of the Covid-19 pandemic sounding a “back to business” note for the construction sector, more homes have been built this year, which is likely to cause lower rental rates.“Tenants are likely to push back on sky-high rents due to higher vacancy, with more units to choose from, macro uncertainties and the rising cost of living,” said Mr Foong. There are 34,341 vacant housing units for the third quarter of the year.

Data released by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) on October 27 showed that the 0.8 per cent in private residential property rentals came at a slower pace than the 2.8 per cent increase in the second quarter. It also noted a moderation in rental increases for the fourth consecutive quarter. It added that the third quarter increase is the smallest quarter-on-quarter gain since the fourth quarter of 2020.

Notably, around 9,000 private residential units, including executive condominiums, were finished last quarter, the most since the second quarter of 2016. The URA added that for this year, it expects that a total of 20,400 private residential units will be completed, the most since 2017.

Man says he’s usually the second choice for women

0

SINGAPORE: A man took to social media anonymously complaining that he was the second choice of men when it came to many women. In a post to NUSWhispers, he wrote: “You know what I noticed? I am on the second level of the attractiveness scale. It’s like I’m in limbo, not quite hot enough to be the hot girls’ first choice, but hot enough to be their rebound when they get dumped by their first choice. Now every time a hot girl is interested in me, I have to figure out what her problem is”.

He shared about two different women he encountered. A beautiful woman he hit it off with asked for his number and even paid for their dinner. “Unfortunately, it soon became apparent how such a perfect creature could even be single in the first place. When she got mad about something, oh boy were you in for a ride. Her outbursts were fiery and completely disproportional”, the man wrote, explaining why he had to move on from her.

A second woman he met was also beautiful and he said she was not at all demanding or entitled. He added that she was respectful and helpful as well. “But alas, I discovered that I was the rebound after her breakup of a long-term relationship. She was biding her time and eventually got back with the dude”, the man wrote.

Netizens commenting on his post said that it was because of his energy that he attracted such women. One wrote: “Your self confidence & mindset is blatantly questionable. You’ll get to nowhere with this mindset. You attract or make what you think you deserve. Another netizen added: “Just enjoy the process of getting free gifts and food loh. If a lady is going to stay she will. Be thankful you aren’t the one paying the bills while the person is on a rebound”.

Earlier this year, a man who had known a woman for only a few weeks yet ended up paying for everything wondered if it would be rude to start distancing himself from her. In an anonymous post to popular confessions page NUSWhispers, the man wrote that since he met the woman a few weeks earlier, they had been going out frequently and spending quite a bit of time together.

He wrote: “Each and every outing consists of me paying the bill for her shopping sprees, albeit inexpensive. (less than $1,000 in total). She never once offered to go dutch, and I never brought up the subject. Recently I had the chance for a sleepover at a budget hotel and nothing happened as she candidly expressed disinterest.”

He asked netizens for advice and wanted to know if it would be rude of him to stop paying for the woman’s expenses and distance himself from her. Netizens who commented said the man ignored all of the woman’s red flags. One wrote: “Congratz, being certified a simp for ignoring all the red flags, for she just using you as a placeholder with no commitment”. /TISG

Man about to be married worries he will not be able to cope with the new lifestyle

0

SINGAPORE: A man about to be married took to social media with worries that he would not be able to cope with the lifestyle change. In an anonymous post to popular confessions page SGWhispers, the man wrote that he was about to be married in a few months’ time and added that he had been with his fianceĂ© for about four years.

“The issue is that I’m scared if I couldn’t cope with marriage. Basically, I’m way too comfortable being alone. I’ve been doing things all alone since I was a boy. Cooking alone, watching movies alone, eating out at a restaurant alone, go to the park alone, celebrate religious holiday alone, playing games alone, birthday celebration alone, study alone, shopping alone, go to fun fair alone, and the list goes on”, the man wrote. He explained that while he had close friends with whom he went out with sometimes, he did not meet them often. He also added that his fianceĂ© would join him sometimes but “not occasionally as she also has things of her own, plus I’m not married to her yet. The reason why I do things alone cause I just want to have the freedom to do things on my own without waiting for someone to be free to do it with me. Nothing personal, really. If they’re free, then go ahead and join. If not, I’ll just do it all by myself”, he wrote.

“I’m excited and nervous about marrying my fiancĂ©. I love her and I want the best for us. It’s not really a huge issue, but, since I’m way too comfortable being alone, do you think I’ll slowly adapt to do things together with her all the time? Or is the reality of marriage different than what I imagined?” the man asked, requesting netizens to make suggestions.

One netizen who commented said: “Why should marriage & dating be different? It’s just a piece of paper. You can still do things alone & grow, as can she. I’m sure she also doesn’t want to spend 24/7 stuck to you. The only thing is perhaps religious celebrations need compromise to spend together with each other’s families”.

Another commented: “Some people don’t have to go through to realize that marriage is not for them. Unfortunately for many others, they have to go through it to understand what they actually want in their life. So go ahead… Discover whether it is something suitable for you. Instead of always second guessing to be or not to be. P. S. You may want to check with your senior colleagues to see how many of them are happily married and bears no regrets. But remember that’s just them, it may not turn out the same for you”. /TISG

Omegle shut down, X users say “good riddance” as platform was riddled with problematic individuals

0

omegle

Some are mourning for the closure of Omegle, a popular site that linked two strangers on video calls. However, most X users found the page to be rather problematic as children normally would go on there, and they could be talking to peculiar middle aged people. Other than that, YouTubers tend to create funny content from that site as well.

According to CNBCTV18, Omegle, the website known for random video and text chats, has closed down after 14 years. Founder Leif K-Brooks cited financial and psychological strains, acknowledging the challenges of maintaining a safe platform. Omegle rose to fame during the pandemic, attracting millions seeking connection.

However, it faced criticism for lacking moderation, leading to shocking content and safety concerns. A lawsuit and increased incidents of child exploitation further tarnished its reputation. Despite its initial aim for platonic connections, Omegle’s misuse contributed to its downfall. Brooks expressed a desire to avoid the stress and health implications of running the platform.

X users rejoicing the closure of Omegle

X users are showing their feelings towards Omegle’s closure. A user states that it is now “unfortunate” that streamers will no longer have content to shock or prank people by using the platform. However, this comment is clearly sarcastic as most X users tend to be conservative and may not tolerate this type of content.

Some users are showing their concerns towards how Omegle is able to help predators exploit children. Apparently there are several cases as stated by X users regarding this problem. Despite this, another user states that he met his friend on that platform who wanted to unalive himself, but because they met, he did not do it.

Others are mocking Doja Cat for allegedly making problematic statements about race on the platform. However, for that, it is somewhat unproven that she was even using the platform or had made problematic remarks about race. Users are doubting this claim, but some speculate that it could have been another site.

X users saying it’s okay to be White

0

white okay

The recent rise of ultra liberal ideologies, that are being pushed by woke White people, have been making most White Americans feel uncomfortable with themselves. However, one should never be ashamed of the race they were born as. The past is complicated and unfortunate, but we can build a better and more united future together.

Unfortunately, the phrase “it’s okay to be White” is seen as an ultra right wing agenda that is borderline White supremacy. In reality, it literally means that it’s okay to be born in the body you are born in. Furthermore, there is currently a lack of research for this, most research done today is made to suit the current liberal agendas.

According to organisations like the ADL, they claim that this rhetoric is a problematic one. They claim that the origins of this idea is from a group of 4chan users as a trolling campaign. However, just like how our society is in 2023, everything has taken a strong turn from the current narrative.

The entire point is that X users are saying that even White people should feel proud of who they are. This is how we truly have an equal society. Demonising an entire racial group of people will not help us progress anywhere.

X users: it’s okay to be White

Conservative X page, iamyesyouareno posted a video done by Jubilee, which is known to dissect controversial topics regarding to White people being able to be proud of themselves or not. Furthermore, users are criticising some of the participants on the show as they appear to dislike their own race very much.

Following that, some users state that individuals should not be proud of the race they’re born with, but rather proud of their achievements. However, other X users vehemently disagree with this standpoint stating that this talk is only directed to White people only. If someone were to say the same thing to a person of colour, they would be bashed on social media.

In addition to this, conservatives are stating that most White people are conditioned to dislike themselves. Today’s society is encouraging most people to be proud of who they are, which is a positive attribute. However, these positive attributes should be spread among everyone regardless of the colour of their skin.
