A poster on the NUSWhispers page got a serious reality check after whining about their pay getting docked $100 after they broke something in the company where they are doing an internship. 

To make a long story short, commenters bluntly told the poster, “U broke u pay.”

They wrote that after they broke the item—without specifying what it was—the boss told them he would deduct $100 from their salary, “which is already like 20% of it.”

They acknowledged that the actual value of the broken item is over $100, but complained that “he (the boss) didn’t even hesitate to say that the deduction will be $100, seems like a common tactic he used for previous interns that also broke stuffs”.

The poster then asked for advice, “and whether is it okay for companies to deduct our salary. 

Should i speak to my intern liaison officer about it ? 

It sucks to know that all the company cares is about $ and is already paying us slavery salary.”

They were promptly schooled by netizens who gave the intern a huge dose of real life.

Some asked them what they would do if the shoe were on the other foot.


Some commenters tried sarcasm to get their point across.

“You didn’t ask your parents to pay for you!!!!,” one wrote.

“Please take good care of the company’s items too. Company is not there to hand out free stuff,” said one.

One commenter asked the poster, “What gives you the idea that you ought to be paid more than you are worth?

This attitude is worrying.”

Others took exception to the fact that the poster referred to their internship as “slavery.”

“Who should pay? Your MP ah?”, asked another.

One corrected the poster by telling them what they receive is an allowance, not even a real salary.
