IMDA geo-blocks new website linked to STR’s Alex Tan over 8 contentious articles

Anti-PAP website, the States Times Review, has announced that the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has geo-blocked a new website linked to its editor Alex Tan for refusing to take down 8 inflammatory articles.

Tan earlier said that he is shutting down STR after the authorities blocked his website for refusing to remove an article that linked Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to the 1MDB scandal.

Tan said that he helped an unnamed netizen set up the new website called The Singapore Herald after he shut STR down.

The Singapore Herald has now been geo-blocked in Singapore as well. STR reported today that the new website was blocked after its supposed editor refused to take down 8 articles that the IMDA had flagged:

The Singapore Herald Website also shared the notice that the IMDA sent to it:

In an article on the matter, the Singapore Herald echoed STR’s appeal for readers to download a VPN service so they could mask their IP address and continue to read the new website.

The article also made untrue allegations that the publisher of The Independent Singapore, Mr Kumaran Pillai, has been charged with defamation.

This is untrue. The Independent Singapore has neither received any summons Nor has it been charged with criminal defamation.

Poor fisherman loses his job after his body balloons to an enormous size after deep sea accident

A poor Peruvian fisherman has been left without a job and in constant pain after parts of his body ballooned to an abnormal size after a deep sea diving accident.

56-year-old Alejandro “Willy” Ramos from the southern fishing town of Pisco, Peru, had followed his father’s footsteps and turned to fishing to make a living 30 years ago. Willy told the local press that fisherman had to only dive 50ft into the waters in his father’s time to catch shellfish.

Today, however, fisherman have to dive to greater depths to catch shellfish, due to overfishing.

On the fateful day of his accident, Willy was 100ft deep underwater as he was being fed air from his son and a coworker who stayed on a boat in the surface. Suddenly, a passing ship severed the air pipe, cutting off oxygen to Willy.

Although ascending too quickly is dangerous as the nitrogen in the diver’s body can form bubbles and cause medical abnormalities, Willy was forced to quickly ascend to the survive since his only source of oxygen was cut off.

The nitrogen, however, caused permanent damage to his body due to the sudden and rapid change in pressure. Willy lamented: “I kept swelling and swelling. My arms swelled to an incredible size. It didn’t go down. It didn’t go down.”

Willy was left with severely swollen arms and chest that added nearly 30 extra kilograms to his frame and left him with a plethora of difficulties. Besides suffering from constant pain and trouble walking due to the extra weight, Willy also has pain in his arms and hears a hissing sound emanating from his chest when he breathes.

Willy also lost his job due to his injuries and has been left unable to pay for any medical treatment. Besides the blows to his health and finances, Willy also said that he felt embarrassed to leave his home for a long time after the accident.

The poor fisherman is now receiving help from the Naval Medical Centre in the Peruvian capital city, Lima. Doctors are reportedly considering the use of a high-tech oxygen chamber to possibly help repair some of the damaged tissue in Willy’s body.

Beyonce performs at the crazy, rich, $100 million, week-long wedding of daughter of Asia’s wealthiest man

0

The richest man in Asia, Mukesh Ambani threw a real-life ‘crazy rich’ week-long wedding for his daughter, Isha, who married Anand Piramal on Wednesday, December 12, in Mumbai. The celebrations were so extravagant that it is estimated to have cost a cool $100 million (S $137 million).

This figure puts the new couple in the same stratosphere as royalty, since Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s nuptials cost $110 million in today’s figures.

Superstar Beyoncé performed for the guests, not even at the wedding reception, but for a pre-wedding celebration last Saturday, December 8, in Udaipur’s City Palace. Beyoncé sang such crowd favorites as “Crazy in Love,” “Naughty Girl” and “Perfect,” along with dazzling costume changes.

The other guests at the private wedding concert were Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Karan Johar, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

The bride’s father, Mukesh Ambani, could well afford the extravaganza. According to Forbes, Ambani’s net worth is $43.4 billion (S $59.4 billion). Ambani helms oil and gas company Reliance Industries. His wife, Nita Ambani, is a well-known philanthropist who founded the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai and heads the Reliance Foundation.

Their daughter, Isha, is a Yale and Stanford graduate and New York business analyst. Her groom, Anand Piramal, is the executive director of business conglomerate Piramal Group. His father Ajay Piramal’s net worth is $4.2 billion (S $59.4 billion) and is the 24th wealthiest person in India. Anand graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard and founded Piramal Realty and health-care initiative Piramal Swasthya.

The bride and groom have known each other since childhood since the families are longtime friends.

Illustrious guests attended the sangeet, traditional celebrations that lead up to the wedding ceremony, including former US Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry, who took part in Indian dances during the festivities. Arianna Huffington, Bollywood and Hollywood stars such as Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, and James Murdoch, the CEO of 21st Century Fox, were also among those who graced the occasion.

But the Ambanis also gave back to the city of Udaipur, donating meals three times a day for more than 5000 people during the four days wedding feast, and setting up a Swadesh bazaar featuring the work of local artists and craftspeople, to show their thankfulness.

Wedding guests were given an opportunity to see and sample the crafts in the bazaar. They also enjoyed a carnival, extravagant meals, a fashion walk and much entertainment from Bollywood celebrities.

Big ‘ooops’ alert: Samsung employees keep using iPhones to promote the South Korean tech giant’s phones

Samsung is the number one the biggest smartphone company in the world, with phones that are popular around the globe. The release of its flagship phones every year is eagerly anticipated, with leaks dropped months in advance.

Oh, but. For all of Samsung’s popularity, the smartphone giant seems to be challenged in getting its employees to stop using the iPhone. Two recent incidents involving Samsung’s social media teams in two countries must have caused the company’s top execs to cringe in embarrassment.

The first incident involved Samsung Mobile in Nigeria. A few weeks ago, on November 25, @samsungmobileng promoted Samsung’s Galaxy Note9. “Enjoy stunning cinematic experience on the Galaxy Note9 SuperAMOLED, infinity display. #Galaxy Note9NG #TheGameChangerNG,” complete with a video of the phone’s display.

This would have been fine, save for the “via Twitter for iPhone” caption on the tweet, which meant that a $900 phone from Samsung was being advertised from a device from Samsung’s biggest competitor, Apple. The tweet has been deleted, but not before sharp-eyed netizens were able to see and, what’s worse, screenshot it.

Photo: screengrab/BGR

An isolated incident could have been swept under the rug, but another one occurred just this week. This time, Samsung Mobile India was the culprit. A tweet from @SamsungMobileIN on Wednesday, December 12, read, “#UltraWideWednesdays are all about capturing the complete story and shooting what your eyes see, just like @yourworldmylens did here with the #Worlds1stQuadCam. #GalaxyA9… Leh at its magical best, valley at its majestic best, #GalaxyA9 at its ultra wide best. #WithGalaxy”

Again, there was a telltale “via Twitter for iPhone” caption on the lower right-hand corner.

Again, the tweet was deleted pretty quickly, but netizens were quicker.

Photo: Twitter screengrab

This is not the only time that Samsung has been embarrassed by folks using iPhones in Samsung-related contexts. In 2012, supermodel Kate Upton graced the launch of the Galaxy Note 10 in New York. Let’s just say she should have left her iPhone at home.
Earlier this year, Ksenia Sobchak, a Russian socialite and brand ambassador for Samsung used an iPhone X in an interview on TV. After that incident, rumors abounded that the South Korean company would sue Sobchak for more than 1 million dollars since she had breached her contract, which included a provision that she would not use any other smartphone in public.

Here’s hoping that next year, when the Galaxy S10 comes out, it will be so spectacular that Samsung social media teams and spokespersons around the world forget about iPhones. Fingers crossed.

Why writing an Academy piece is like going back to school

0

Looking back at the past few months with e27 Academy, there are plenty of things to take note of

writing_academy_piece

“This reminds me very much of college.”

I told our editor Kevin when we began our journey with e27 Academy a few months ago.

By the time I was on the third day of working on an article for our project, and was drowning in a sea of books and online articles about setting up a business in Indonesia. I had an outline laid nearby, filled my notes with scribbles, and was just about to add in a quote from a source to the article. I had also just had my second helping of Indomie for lunch.

The last time I was in a similar situation was when I was doing a paper in university.

Ever since its launch in October, we have published at least four articles each week about topics ranging from developing a marketing plan to managing the relationship between startups and corporations.

We had even hosted the offline version of the Academy in Batam, Indonesia, on November 28-30 (which, unfortunately, I had to miss due to other commitments).

Looking back through this journey, I realised that there are many things that the team have learned –and still many things remained to learn.

This is why I decided to reveal to the world how and why we are doing things at the e27 Content team.

If there is anything that I have learned about learning, is that throughout the process, you need to share to the world what you have learned. By triggering a discussion about the topics that you have learned, you may also have the opportunity to receive feedback and gain additional knowledge.

Guess what? You may even help someone along the way.

So this is how we do it

When we are setting up the concept of Academy, we stressed on the importance for the articles to be thorough.

This is not a news article that we write daily in under an hour, filled with only the basic information that you need to know about who is raising funds, or who is being appointed as CTO.

This is supposed to be a reference that readers can bookmark for when they are in need of advice, or just when they feel like broadening their horizon. It has to feature the advice and experience of people who have done it, and done it well. Our writers also need to be able to pick up the right angle and ask the right questions.

We will have to read books and have an in-depth interview with at least three sources in order to produce the expected 1,000 words article.  Especially since we have big goals for the project: As written on our OKRs, we aim to have 30 articles published by end of Q4 2018.

In implementing this process, we learned something from our own contribution programme. Today we have Angelo, who is in charge of the programme, with some help from our writer Yon. They edit the incoming submissions, and even go all the way to invite people to write for our platform.

Before Angelo joined the company, the four writers at the Content team had to do all these tasks themselves.

It was crazy. I would rather not remember those days.

We dabbled in the idea of setting up a specialised team to work on Academy articles, but then we decided to work with what we have.

So we gave each of our writer something called Academy Week, a week when a writer got to focus on working their Academy article –and nothing else. By the time a new week comes, it is expected that the writer will come up with one Academy article, ready for publishing.

That way, each writer can really focus on planning and writing the article, without fear of being rushed or distracted by other tasks.

If you ever wondered why I have been declining invitation to startup events or interviews, this is the reason why.

So why is this ideal for us?

The system works well for us that for the time being we can forget about the need to hire new people and set up a whole different team.

First of all, we have a team of writers who have been dabbling in the Southeast Asian tech startup ecosystem for at least three years. Not only that we are well-connected enough in the industry to know whom to ask questions to, we also know the right questions to ask.

We have also been feeling humbled by the outpouring support coming in from the community for this project. Even before we reach out to them, sources are writing in to us, asking how they can contribute to Academy.

Doing Academy pieces also provides unexpected benefits for our writers.

I have mentioned previously about how writing an Academy piece reminds me much of college days, and I was not just being nostalgic.

Something in the process also enables me to dig into the other sides of the startup industry: The questions I do not usually get to ask our sources, the answers that help broaden my knowledge on how one runs a business.

Having a dedicated time to work on the article also enables us to plan things through and take our time to execute it. When working on a news article, we often get to juggle between fact-checking, editing, and getting it all done in 30 minutes.

But with Academy Week, we are able to take time out of the equation.

So what’s next?

As we are closing in to the end of 2018, we have begun to figure out our to-do list for the year 2019. Which is coming in less than three weeks. Gasp. Seriously?

Anyway, you may have read about our upcoming Echelon Asia Summit. The event is set to happen on May 23-24, so please mark your calendar. We would love to see you there.

In regards to Academy, we definitely see no reason to give up on it. If anything, we are even more eager to find out what we can come up with next year: New people to talk to, new topics to dig deeper. New ways to improve our writers’ knowledge and understanding in the field of business, technology, and everything in between.

Who knows what we all get to learn about next year?

More noise barriers needed at 16 locations along MRT lines, LTA calls for tender

0

Singapore – The Land Transportation Authority (LTA) has announced on Friday (Dec 24) that it will be calling for a tender to install more railway noise barriers at 16 new locations along the North-South and East-West MRT lines. The chosen tender will be announced and awarded in July 2019.

This next phase marks the third part of the railway noise barriers programme. On the North-South line, some of the areas expecting this upgrade will be Jurong East, Gombak, Sembawang and Yishun. The East-West line installation includes areas such as Kembangan, Paya Lebar, Pasir Ris and Clementi. Once the design and off-site planning are finished, the noise barrier installation can begin, which is set for the third quarter of 2020.

Aside from noise barriers, the LTA will also be implementing alternative solutions such as installing noise-dampening wheels and concrete sleeper tracks to further minimize noise levels. The agency is working closely with train operators and manufacturers for this.

Photo: YouTube screengrab

Once the 5.5km stretch of new noise barriers is in place, Singapore will have a total of 27km of barriers. These barriers reduce noise levels that passing trains make by 5-10 decibels. The National Environment Agency’s noise limit is 67 decibels on average per hour. Areas that exceed this limit, usually along elevated railway tracks, must install noise reduction measures.

The third phase is expected to be completed in 2030 while the second phase which was started in September of this year is set to be finished by 2020.

In order to help speed up the project, the North-South and East-West lines will be opened later and closed earlier which gives engineers and workers extra time to spend on the project.

“This is basically what normalized xenophobia looks like,” Miss USA draws flak for her behavior toward Asian contestants

Ahhh, the delicious irony of a beauty pageant contestant seemingly making fun of her Asian rivals for not speaking English (Miss Cambodia) or not speaking it well (Miss Vietnam), while in an Asian country (Thailand), where not obviously it’s not the first language.

Miss USA, the world is a very big and diverse place. It would serve you well to learn that, wether or not you are crowned Miss Universe.

Miss USA, Sarah Rose Summers, posted a video on Instagram Live, where she jokingly remarked to Miss Australia and Miss Colombia, “What do you think about Miss Vietnam? She pretends to know so much English, and you ask her a question after having a whole conversation with her and she … [smiles and nods].”

The video has now expired, but it certainly got the attention of netizens.

In another video, Summers talked about Miss Cambodia, in a seemingly sympathetic manner. “Miss Cambodia is here and doesn’t speak any English, and not a single other person speaks her language. Can you imagine? Like Francesca (Hung, Miss Australia) said that would be so isolating and I said, yes, and that would be just confusing all the time.”

This was re-posted by Instagrammer @diet-prada, side by side with another video where Summers thanks her fans in Cambodia, and tells them, “I met your Miss Cambodia and she is beautiful.”

diet_prada writes, “Regina George, is that you? This is basically like the most dramatic reality show, but condensed into 1 minute lol.@sarahrosesummers hopefully will prove that ignorance will not win you a @missuniverse title…whatever that means these days. This is basically what normalized xenophobia looks like. If she’s trying to show empathy, the condescending, intolerant tone tells a different story. A reminder that you’re participating in a competition in a country/continent where English is NOT the primary language.
Cc: @francesca.hung @valeriamoralesd@rern_sinat (Miss Cambodia)”

Netizens did not hesitate to call Summers out for her comments and attitude.

letsgo.vin@sarahrosesummers how many languages do you speak? So embarrassing.

matthew_cavitt Racist! #MissUniverse2018 #missusa racist!!!

sheilamolek She not qualified for miss universe ignorance same as her leader. Shameful

trishmadiganHope she loses just for that ignorant rant alone! I’m sure she doesn’t speak any other language! I really hate mean girls like this.

miabannikovaClearly shows no empathy whatsoever. There is really no way to twist this. It is so incredibly mean spirited.

leedazunWhy does everyone have to speak English ? Try to learn some other languages ! Show some respect!

rgburologyMiss USA you are beautiful but unfortunately you bared your soul that is flawed with arrogance and superiority complex..You have realized that you’re chances of winning is jeopardized by your public display of empathy and compassion. At least you’ve taught a cautionary lesson for all the other candidates

To be fair, Summers has apologized for her remarks via Instagram, posting a photo of herself hugging other candidates.

She captioned it with,

@MissUniverse is an opportunity for women from around the world to learn about each other’s cultures, life experiences, and views. We all come from different backgrounds and can grow alongside one another.

In a moment where I intended to admire the courage of a few of my sisters, I said something that I now realize can be perceived as not respectful, and I apologize. My life, friendships, and career revolve around me being a compassionate and empathetic woman. I would never intend to hurt another. I am grateful for opportunities to speak with Nat, Miss Cambodia, and H’Hen, Miss Vietnam, directly about this experience. These are the moments that matter most to me.

Personal loan offers may seem like best friends in crisis, but watch out!

When times get tough and you need extra cash for an emergency or unplanned event, personal loan offers can suddenly become your best friend.

By: Hitesh Khan/

The great thing is if you’re in need of an immediate funds injection, there’s a wide array of personal loan offers to choose from in Singapore. Banks are often competing to lend to customers at lower interest rates.

Some banks have even reduced their interest rates to make their personal loan offers more attractive to customers.

The reason why banks make personal loan offers attractive to borrowers is because it is a great way to grow their portfolio. And with the tight regulation imposed on the offering of unsecured credit by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, banks are confident of increasing revenue with a better control on risk. Some banks are also varying their loan eligibility to meet different customer needs.

But before you rush to pick up one of the personal loan offers consider the following tips first.

1. Can you afford it?

With so many different arrays of personal loans, it becomes tempting to sign up to a loan package without thorough consideration. An important thing that a borrower should consider is whether they have the capacity to pay back their lender.

Take an honest look at your current financial situation before you sign on the dotted line. If you have outstanding debts to pay, it is not a good idea to proceed with the loan – otherwise, you will likely struggle with the repayments. An important question you should consider is, if you have sufficient income for your lifestyle after repaying your debts.

Best Personal Loans in Singapore (2018)

2. Compare prices

Before you take any personal loan offers you have to set aside some time to shop around and compare different packages, without simply replying on the advertised or published rates. This is because the interest rates can vary depending on a lot of factors.

A good rule of the thumb is to examine closely the total cost of the personal loan offers. Calculate the total amount repayable and add up all the upfront costs, such as processing fees. Also, don’t forget to ask the bank what other fees they collect. Think about transaction, late payment, disbursement, foreclosure or early settlement fees. These can all affect the overall cost of your borrowing.

3. Review the terms

And while you’re comparing prices, make sure you study the full terms and conditions, even before you commit to the loan, so you will know ahead what you’re getting yourself into. Read the fine print especially, because if you don’t, the tricky loan terms could cost you more than you had imagined.

4. Don’t borrow more to get less interest

Interest rates may also depend on the amount of money you’re borrowing. The higher your debt, the lesser the interest could be. With that in mind, some people opt to increase their loan amount to avail themselves of a good rate.

Chief mortgage consultant at iCompareLoan, Paul Ho, cautions against doing this. “Make sure you only borrow what you actually need,” he said. Adding: “While the interest rate may be lower, the capital amount will be higher, and so the monthly repayment is still going to be higher. Can you afford this? If not, please think again.”

5. Negotiate

To lower the cost of borrowing, try to convince your bank to give you a better rate. You should negotiate with your lender and they may be willing to cut the interest rate to secure your business, and so the loan will cost you less. If you are uncomfortable about negotiating, you should engage the services of a loan specialist.

Loan specialists will not only be able to negotiate a better rate for you, they will also be able to help you compare the best personal loan offers from among the different ones given by the many banks. It also makes sense to engage loan specialists because their services are usually free.

Mortgage Broker Singapore – Should I use one?

6. Watch out for insurance

When you take out a loan, your bank may sign you up to a credit or payment protection insurance. Check the terms of the insurance. In most cases, it is mainly to cover the loan repayments if the borrower dies, loses his job or gets permanently disabled. It does not extend any financial benefits to the borrower or his family in the event of death, redundancy or disability.

If that’s the case, you might consider taking out your own loan to protect yourself against any eventualities. But be mindful that it may not always be practical to take out an insurance if the loan amount is small and needs to be repaid within a short period.

Latest labour market report shows fewer retrenched workers are able to find jobs

The latest report released by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) yesterday shows that while fewer workers were retrenched in the third quarter of this year compared to the previous quarter, there have also been fewer retrenched workers who were able to find another job.

MOM reports that 2,860 workers were retrenched in the third quarter of 2018 compared to 3,030 retrenched workers in the second quarter of this year. Compared to 11,040 workers who were retrenched in the fist nine months of 2017, a lower number of 8,220 people were retrenched in the first nine months of 2018.

MOM pointed to business restructuring and reorganisation as the top reasons for retrenchments in the report.

The report, however, also shows that only 62 per cent of workers who were retrenched six months ago found another job in the last quarter. This is lower than the 64 per cent of workers who were able to find a new job in six months in the second quarter.

The report also suggested that the labour market is not as tight as some may expect it to be since an increase in the number of unemployed workers and a decline in vacancies has caused the job vacancies to unemployed persons ratio to drop to 1.05 in Sept from 1.10 in June.

Despite the drop in the job vacancies to unemployed persons ratio, MOM reports that there are still more job vacancies than job seekers and that half of the vacancies in September were for Professionals, Managers, Executives and Technicians (PMETs).

The MOM report also showed that the number of hours Singapore resident works has been declining since a peak in 2010.

The report said that each employee worked an average of 44.9 hours (comprising of standard work hours and paid overtime) weekly, this September. This translates to an average of 8.98 hours a day for a five-day work week. In Sept 2010, each employee worked an average of 46.3 hours or 9.26 hours a day for a five-day work week.

MOM claimed that unpaid overtime, hours spent checking work emails or carrying out other regular tasks at home, and all other forms of overtime also show a steady decline over time.

Netizens, however, have opined that the trends captured in the MOM report may not accurately capture the realities on the ground.

Blasting the Ministry and asking where they got their statistics, several netizens have expressed that their relatives and coworkers work far longer than the average hours MOM says Singapore residents work:

WP MPs prepare to send thank you messages to donors who generously gave and encouraged them during their fundraising appeal

The three Workers’ Party (WP) parliamentarians and town councillors who are embroiled in the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) lawsuit shared an update on their blog yesterday, along with a picture of them sorting out the contributions that poured in from the public to help them battle the lawsuit.

Thanking their kind donors for the generous contributions and sharing that many sent “wonderful messages along with their donations,” Mr Low Thia Khiang, Ms Sylvia Lim and Mr Pritam Singh wrote:

“Dear Friends

“We received thousands of electronic and mailed-in contributions, many with heartfelt messages of support. We are sorting the contributions, so that we can send our thanks to those who left their contact details. You can see us here sorting one batch while ever distracted by the wonderful messages.

“Many did not leave their means of contact. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. To Christians we wish you a blessed Christmas and to everyone we wish you happy holidays and a Happy New Year ahead!

“Sylvia, Pritam and Mr Low”

On 24 Oct, the MPs launched a fundraising appeal and revealed in their blog that they have “depleted our personal resources,” having already paid $600,000 from their own pockets to their legal team as the trial progresses.

Adding that they have not used any party funds, the trio asserted that they are committed to fighting vigorously against the unfounded claims that have been levelled against them.

Shortly after the parliamentarians made their appeal for financial support, many gave to the town councillors and flooded social media with words of encouragement for the three political leaders.

Within six hours of the appeal going live, the public donated $100,000 to the MPs. Within a day, the MPs raised nearly half a million dollars. Within two days, over $900,000 had been donated to the MPs by thousands.

On 27 Oct, just three days after the fundraising appeal was launched, the WP leaders closed their appeal for financial support, having raised over a million dollars from the public for their mounting legal costs.

Asking donors to hold their contributions if they had not transferred the funds, the MPs wrote: “We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. The financial support is crucial but the moral support you have given us is incalculable.”

The MPs shared a running tally of the contributions they received and updated their blog regularly to show accounts of where the funds that were raised went. The politicians published three such updates, on 30 Oct, 1 Nov, and 13 Nov.
