Monitor Lizard spotted in LRT lift, netizens say it “Found out public transport price and decided to walk instead”

A monitor lizard was spotted in the lift of an LRT station, and netizens had a field day with the comments.

In a post to the popular Facebook page Singapore Wildlife Sightings on Monday (May 30), a netizen who went by the name of Toon Ong shared photos of the monitor lizard. The photos had a date and time stamped on them, May 3, around noon. According to the photos, the monitor lizard seemed to be in the lift at first, but nine minutes later had made its way outside into the forested area.

The lizard, seen in the lift of Layar LRT, prompted many jokes from netizens, such as how it was “Going to take Lizard Rapid Transit”.

Earlier this year, a glimpse of nature at work was caught on camera as a family of otters tried to steal a fish from a monitor lizard that had the fish securely held in its jaws. Despite being outnumbered, the reptile used its powerful tail to whack the competition away.

“Fight for the fish,” reported a Singapore Wildlife Sightings member on Tuesday (Jan 18). The netizen uploaded a video taken at the Botanical Gardens, featuring a lone monitor lizard facing off with a romp of otters. There seemed to be nine otters trying their luck to snatch the fish away.

Online hunt for Singaporean who didn’t pay for fuel in Johor

After a Singaporean driver fled a petrol station at Bukit Indah without paying, photos of their car with its number plate in full view have made rounds on social media as part of the station’s attempt to collect payment.

The car is a blue Kia Sorento Diesel with number plate SNA1951S.

The photos were published on the Facebook page of SGRV Admin on Thursday last week (May 26).

According to a report in carbuyer.com.sg, the photo of the vehicle was released by the fuel station that had this caption: “Notice to SNA1951S car owners. Please come back to the station to make payment of outstanding bills. TQ.”

The report added that a check on OneMotoring’s website had been run by the cashier at the petrol station using the car’s number plate.

The report added that the price of diesel in Malaysia (S$0.67) per litre is four and a half times cheaper than prices in Singapore (S$3.03 per litre as of May 25, 2022).

Some netizens were surprised that the Singaporean driver got away with not paying for fuel, as payment should have been made first.

Others clarified the matter, however.

One netizen insisted that “both were at fault.”

Others condemned the driver’s actions.

When one netizen suggested it might have been “an honest mistake,” others quickly disagreed.

A boat caught fire on Keppel Bay on Monday morning (May 30). The Singapore Civil Defence Force said in a Facebook post that it was alerted to a vessel fire at No. 2 Keppel Bay Vista at around 11:30 am on Monday.

“Upon arrival, the fire was seen raging from a vessel berthed at a pier,” SCDF wrote.

A video of the fire was also uploaded on the Trip and Travels YouTube channel on Monday.

It took firefighters from Marina Bay Fire Station, Alexandra Fire Station, Brani Marine Fire Station, and a vessel from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and on-ground staff to work together to extinguish the flames.

They used three water jets and three hose reels from the pier to surround the vessel to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other boats.

“The fire was extinguished in about one hour with two water jets, two foam jets, and a water monitor from the MPA vessel,” the SCDF wrote, adding that damping down operations were also carried out after the fire.

Fortunately, firefighters were able to put it out within an hour and no injuries were reported from the incident.

As borders and tourist destinations reopen, more and more Singaporeans are travelling abroad. A trendy way of letting the online community know of such travel plans is by posting a photo of a passport with the boarding pass.

However, even a split-second video of a Singapore passport with an unblurred boarding pass can enable hackers to change flight details and gain access to personal information, said performance coach Jason Ho in a TikTok video. “If you like to post your air ticket with your passport when you’re going overseas, this is damn dangerous for your privacy,” he said on Monday (May 30).

After a netizen shared over social media the bill for three drinks and two pieces of bread, he noted that the drinks were served in a “very small cup leh” and were “very expensive leh.”

The bill, including a service charge and GST, amounted to $20.60. Here is the breakdown of his $20.60 order: One cup of hot Milo for $4, 1 filter coffee for $4.50, 1 block (sic) coffee for $3.50, and 1 order of parota (2 ccs) $5.50, plus 10 per cent service charge and 7 per cent GST.

In a Facebook post on Saturday (May 28), Workers’ Party Member of Parliament Jamus Lim addressed the topic of adoption, which he said “should be a win-win-win process” that would help address the issue of Singaporeans “not having enough babies.”

With the country’s fertility rate gone down over the past few decades, no wonder that fertility treatments are now subsidized, and adoption laws have been revised. Assoc Prof Lim wrote that he had recently spoken on the topic in Parliament concerning additional concerns on the adoption process, which he said had come about after “extensive discussions with adoptive parents, and those in the industry.”

It’s possible that many Singaporeans have a special interest in the Spanish football club Valencia CF, since, after all, it’s been owned by Singaporean business magnate Peter Lim since 2014.

And, until very recently, Valencia’s president was another Singaporean—former diplomat Anil Murthy, who was appointed to head the club in 2017. But then a leaked audio recording of less than flattering remarks got Mr Murthy into trouble, and on Monday (May 30) Valencia announced in an official statement that with immediate effect, Mr Murthy would cease to be president and employee of the club.

What did he say?

Earlier in May, Superdeporte, a sports newspaper based in Valencia, published audio recordings from a private dinner that Mr Murthy had attended in April.

In it, the former president described Liverpool and Newcastle as “s**t” cities.

He also threatened to “kill” Carlos Soler‘s reputation if the midfielder decides to leave Valencia CF next season on a free transfer.

The midfielder is one of Valencia’s club captains and has not yet signed a contract extension, though it ends in June of next year.

In Valencia’s statement, it said that Mr Murthy’s remarks had a negative effect on the club’s relationship with fans, but underlined that the former president’s statements were not shared by the club itself.

“The board hold the view that a change in leadership is required, in order to regain the trust of the fans and the community,” ESPN quotes the club as saying.

Netizens in Singapore had a lot to say about the issue.

Some commented that the former diplomat had been anything but diplomatic. 

One commenter suggested that club owner Peter Lim might consider hiring a certain CEO who went viral with his “umbrage” remark last year.

For others, the incident brought to mind another incident of leaked audio.

Ali Lee also said that she was disappointed in not being able to essay her role as a female ghost in the film opposite Owen Cheung. “It’s very cute. When I first read the script, I thought about how I never played a female ghost before. I have played a robot before so if there are interesting characters, I would like to try it out.”

“This is affecting my health, but it also affects filming and its schedule. It is difficult to constantly ask others to accommodate you, so I talked to the company. They were worried that I wouldn’t be able to handle it.

I have been seeing a traditional Chinese doctor to help me recuperate. They are telling me to stop staying up late. I am also doing acupuncture, but I still cannot undo the damage caused by the continuous filming. There are some dramas that require actors to film 24 hours round the clock for two or three months. During such taxing times, I was worried that my body would not be able to endure it. I want to find a good balance.”

She thanked TVB for understanding and accepting her decision.

Lee’s more recent roles include the romantic drama Beauty and the Boss in 2021 where she played a divorced secretary alongside Moses Chan. She won the Most Popular Female Character award at the 2021 TVB Anniversary Awards for her role as Amelia Wong.

The versatile actress has also been applauded for her role in AI Romantic where she played an android.

Female domestic helper in Singapore allegedly abused by her employer

A woman who pleaded guilty last month to physically abusing her helper from 2017 to 2018 was slapped on Monday (May 30) with a S$1,000 fine and a five-month jail sentence.

Thirty-five-year-old Zhao Lin, who was working as a nurse at the time when the helper was employed by her, would sometimes even hit the maid in the presence of Zhao’s young son, who was only four years old. Zhao would also at times take away between $100 to $200 a month from the helper’s salary of $500, and even hurled the helper’s phone to the ground, destroying it.

Serangoon Central fire aftermath: nearby HDB residents suffering from noise and air pollution, repair works stopped halfway

One person was taken to the hospital following a fire at a coffee shop at 261 Serangoon Central Drive on May 14. The fire involved the coffeeshop’s kitchen exhaust ducting on the first floor of the building. “It’s been two to three weeks (since the incident),” wrote Facebook page Complaint Singapore member on Monday (May 30).

“The repair materials for the vents are already here, but repair works were paused hallway. Even the machine is here. They built up the vent pipe halfway on May 17, and they completely just stopped doing so,” said Ms Zhining. “Why are the residents staying here suffering due to the aftermath of the fire?” asked the concerned individual, noting they had to endure unfinished repair works from the Serangoon Central Block fire.

Anita Sarawak breaks silence after almost 12 years to end rumours of her death; reassures she’s also neither sick nor divorced

She hasn’t been in the public eye since 2011, but pop diva Anita Sarawak is very much alive and kicking, in fact.

The singer also wanted to dispel rumours that she’s sick and that she’s got divorced from her husband, Mahathir Abdullah, who is also her manager.

Anita Sarawak, who was born Ithnaini binti Mohamed Taib on March 23, 1952, and her husband have been living in the United States since 2011 and are based in Las Vegas.

The diva became famous at the age of 17 and has performed all over the world—including a three-month US tour in 1979 and an 18-year stint at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.

Anita Sarawak met her husband, Briton Mohamad Mahathir Abdullah, who was born Martin Cox, in Las Vegas. In 2001, they got married.

But she has stayed quiet for the past 11 years.

However, she recently reached out to Roslen Fadzil, a former entertainment journalist, to dispel rumours about her “disappearance.”

“Our conversation was short, and I also didn’t ask too many questions because I wanted to respect Anita’s privacy. What I can tell you is that the story that people say about Anita like she’s sick, dead and divorced is not true,” Roslen told Malay Mail.

In an Instagram post on May 29, he shared that the singer and her husband had called to wish him a happy Hari Raya, adding that rumours surrounding the singer’s illness and divorce are not true at all. He also made an appeal for the couple’s privacy. “We let them both live quietly abroad, respect their privacy, and all move on cheerfully!”

Roslen told Malay Mail that the singer, actress and talk show host, now 70, still sounds as she did in days past, as cheerful as ever.

Alas, she no longer sings, which is something that her fans are likely to be very disappointed to hear.

Instead, she is now a full-time housewife who spends her days doing the things she loves, such as gardening.

Anita Sarawak was born to parents who were both in the entertainment industry. She is the only child of director S. Roomai Noor and actress Siput Sarawak. Her stepmother, Datin Umi Kalthum, was a veteran Malaysian actress. /TISG

Spotting a wild boar at Bukit Batok, netizens were quick to joke that the creatures should be housed at the Istana.

The wild boar, seen on Tuesday (May 31) morning along Hillview Avenue, was spotted probably looking for food. The lone animal was along the pedestrian path as cars and people went by.

Sharing a photo to the popular Facebook group Singapore Wildlife Sightings, a netizen who went by the name of Balogh Tamás wrote: “Good morning wild boar. Poor fella near road at Hillview Ave… Hope gets back to the forest safe”. 

The man’s post drew other comments as to the need for these animals to be rehomed. Much of their forested land has been cleared, driving them into the public domain.

Last week, sharing a photo of a rather muscly wild boar, a netizen joked that it was “on steroids”.

Uploading the photo of the burly-looking animal to the Facebook group Singapore Wildlife Sightings on Tuesday (May 24), a netizen who goes by the name of Ng Bee Ling wrote: “I must say the wild boars in my area likely on steroids…”

When asked where the photo was taken, Ms Ng responded that it was taken at Rifle Range Road in Bukit Timah.

The wild boar is a native animal of Singapore which can weigh up to 100kg and has a lifespan of over 20 years. They are omnivorous but feed mainly on seeds, tubers and young plants.

However, even a split-second video of a Singapore passport with an unblurred boarding pass can enable hackers to change flight details and gain access to personal information, said performance coach Jason Ho in a TikTok video. “If you like to post your air ticket with your passport when you’re going overseas, this is damn dangerous for your privacy,” he said on Monday (May 30).

Despite the video clip only lasting for half a second, Coach Jason said he was able to take a snapshot and got “everything.” He then explained that hackers could simply use the e-ticket number, log into the Singapore Airlines website and gain access to the flight details, receipts, personal information and the last four digits of the traveller’s credit card.

Coach Jason listed out the information being “given away” through such photos “without you even knowing:”

  • Change or cancel flight
  • Change food
  • Change seat
  • Upgrade seat
  • Full name
  • Passport number
  • Passport expiry date
  • Last four digits of credit card
  • Date of birth
  • Email
  • Mobile number

 

He used an example of an influencer posting a 0.5-second video of her boarding pass and passport on her way to the SEA (Southeast Asian) Games.

“This is a public service announcement for you to share with all your loved ones and friends. I’ve been telling my friends for the longest time, and I hope more people would be careful with the e-ticket number as it poses such a dangerous personal information hack,” said Coach Jason in a comment.

There are many ways to post the same photo, all the while protecting confidential details. The traveller can cover the e-ticket number with a thumb, blur out the details, add stickers on the photo, or slide the boarding pass further into the passport to cover crucial information. /TISG
